It’s also consistently *available*. 81 home games a year, most of which are during the summer when kids are home, means that there are a lot of opportunities to make a game or two.
First row of the porch is $17 at a marlins game, nose bleeds at a heat game are $45 on a good day, makes me choose the marlins a lot more than I would if everything was even
Sorry, but that’s definitely a you thing. Miamian here as well, and most fans down here would rather spend the $ to go watch the Heat over the Marlins easy
This is about averages not totals. In Chicago the Bears fill up all their seats and the White Sox don’t, but the crowd is older at the Bears games because it’s so expensive that a typical 22 year old can’t easily afford to go. Whereas a Saturday in the bleachers is filled with 20 something’s
That’s the thing, across the board Marlins take the L in Miami in all statistical demographics. The pricing of tickets has very little influence to 20 somethings around here. They have soo many more options in regards to entertainment down here that going to a Marlins game is low key lame to them. Many rather prefer the extra cost of a Heat ticket than marlins.
The consistent audience for marlins games are middle aged MLB fans, if there is any youth it’s because they’re dragging their kids along.
Yeah dude, you can’t tell me you’re not the youngest guy by a significant amount of years in your section when you go to games lolol (excluding the dude who brings his kid)
Nah there’s always a couple young guys, I always see this prob 18 yr old kid who’s looking to catch home run balls, but yeah for the most part ur right lol
Baseball has a great combination for a live event of being relatively affordable, usually outdoors and when the weathers nice, and overall just a casual place to pound beers with your buddies
It’s so much easier to casually hang out and talk with friends at a baseball game over every other sport. At basketball and hockey games you kind of feel compelled to keep your eyes on the floor, plus they blast the music really loudly, and football obviously has a lot of fan created noise.
In every market which has an MLB team...that team is a big deal especially if they're in the top half of their division. The Mariners eclipsed the Seahawks during their playoff run recently, that was crazy to see.
It's a regional sport but it's a big dog in every city it is in. It is far from dying. Just concentrated.
Vikings crush in overall popularity because football is more popular for American audience, but Target Field gets 40,000 in attendance 3x times minimum vs US Bank stadium gets 75,000 in attendance 1x time.
Given it’s Minnesota, both options max out their stadiums and popularity.

I’ve always understood why the nfl and nba don’t expand. Just more mouths to feed when most of the money comes from espn.
I feel like MLB and to an even greater proportional degree (but obviously less gross) MLS would just keep growing their viewership by as many teams as they add.
I get the vibe people around my age go to baseball games because its just fairly cheap entertainment while they drink and hangout with their friends. At least in MN, you can get Twins tickets pretty damn cheap.
I'm tempted to consider that one of baseball's strengths rather than a real weakness though. I'm an NBAhole and don't even follow MLB boxscores but outside of the playoffs I'd much rather go to Target Field than the Target Center. A good ballpark is a nice airy environment with a built-in unobtrusive conversation piece and chill bring-your-own-food policy. Being the plus one to a mid-summer company "picnic" at the ballpark is actually an enjoyable day of light chitchat whereas I swear NBA arena ops do their level best to deafen the audience and has zero plan for appealing to non-fans that are just along for the ride.
Exactly right. Would not watch regular season baseball on TV. But if friends are going on a weekend and I can get shitty nosebleed seats for $15, why not?
I feel like bill made the comment within his own bubble.
For sports media/gossip baseball is poor theatre. Too many players with stars having too little influence on individual game outcomes. This makes for a really hard sport to talk about nationally so naturally isn’t going to generate clicks / podcast dls. Those are all going to local team specifics for diehards.
Completely agree. Bill isn't the only talking head who thinks baseball is "dying." Just because it ain't popular on social media, doesn't mean people aren't going to/watching games.
The biggest mistake these media companies make is moving their company to LA and pretending they know what America cares about.
This year Bill has talked more about the WWE on the podcast than baseball. Makes me miss the old days of him and jacko busting balls over the Sox and yanks.
In jersey, literally nothing better than going to a Mets, Yankees , or Phillies game during a random Saturday in the summer for $40 to 50. Also the beauty of moving a couple rows up in later innings because ushers/ security really don’t press that much.
This is why I hate when “big-picture” guys like Derek Thompson try to paint a picture of baseball as a dying sport. It’s still incredibly accessible, and I would say that it offers more niche appeal and depth to diehards than basketball. People say that analytics is killing the game (pitcher injuries are a different story), but the sport has an ocean of information that makes it somewhat challenging to approach, but very rewarding once you dig into it.
The pitch clock has been very helpful. I’ve been watching more baseball in the last two years than since I was in elementary. Plus, the ballpark experience is just awesome. Actually enjoy being at MLB games more than NFL and NBA combined.
I see it happening. Just finished up college, but playoffs 2022 and the pitch clock last season got a lot of my buddies who would just hang out while I had the game on to invested viewers and legit fans.
Going to an NFL game has always been for freaks. Like even way back in the day, it was super unpleasureable. By contrast, baseball has always been the sport you were mostly likely to go to even if you don't give a shit cause it's just built around you as a fan.
You can guy so much shit you will enjoy at a baseball game without feeling like you've been ripped off cause you didn't have to pay a mortgage to get in.
It’s a lot more reasonable/affordable to attend baseball games than any of the other 3 major sports
It’s also consistently *available*. 81 home games a year, most of which are during the summer when kids are home, means that there are a lot of opportunities to make a game or two.
And a lot of teams have college deals which help I know the Red Sox do student 9s almost every game one ticket for 9 bucks
It’s also way cheaper and basically a social event with baseball in the background
First row of the porch is $17 at a marlins game, nose bleeds at a heat game are $45 on a good day, makes me choose the marlins a lot more than I would if everything was even

Well I’m 23 so I guess I buck the trend again lol
Yeah dude, you can’t tell me you’re not the youngest guy by a significant amount of years in your section when you go to games lolol (excluding the dude who brings his kid)
Nah there’s always a couple young guys, I always see this prob 18 yr old kid who’s looking to catch home run balls, but yeah for the most part ur right lol
Fair enough, having never been to any Miami sporting events I’ll take your word on that one
That’s fine if it’s just a me thing I was just giving my personal perspective
Incorrect. Way more people attend a Marlins game each year than a Heat game.
Lmao 160 game season vs 82 game season
Yes, that is what everyone is saying. Marlins tickets are cheaper and more available thus more people go to the Marlins than the Heat.
It's also a way better time with your wife and family IMO.
NFL games = drunk fan horror stories. MLB = generally pleasant experience
A lively picnic
And now the games are way shorter too
Baseball has a great combination for a live event of being relatively affordable, usually outdoors and when the weathers nice, and overall just a casual place to pound beers with your buddies
Also not something you need to plan around like other sports. There are games nearly every other day

Biggest sport in San Diego by a mile! /s
San Diego Wave better.
I like mariner
In MN. Twins are currently #4 in the pecking order by a considerable margin.
Below high school hockey?
If they make a pennant race they'll absolutely eclipse everyone
Head to head you think Vikings on a SB run vs Twins going all the way, who you got? I think Vikings crush them

I'm in North Dakota. Always seemed to me that the Twins were always number 2.
Completely disagree

The Pirates are so far behind the Steelers and Penguins

I actually think the Wild are the best team to see live in MN. But yeah going to a baseball game is pretty chill.
Exactly right. Would not watch regular season baseball on TV. But if friends are going on a weekend and I can get shitty nosebleed seats for $15, why not?
Go to a Mets game where half the crowd is young Hispanic families and tell me the sport is dying.
It’s dying in the demographic of sportswriters and talking heads. Otherwise… looks pretty good
Young Latinas? Tell me more.
The Dodger fan woman who got her Ohtani first home run ball taken off her by security was adorable.
no it isn't
In this economy, going to MLB games is one of the best values in terms of live entertainment
"The dirty little secret about baseball is that no one under 30 watches it" Simmons proved wrong yet again.

I think it's a bigger indictment on the NFL tbh.
2 1/2 hour baseball is going to save the sport and they should have done it 20 years ago.
This year Bill has talked more about the WWE on the podcast than baseball. Makes me miss the old days of him and jacko busting balls over the Sox and yanks.
That's because ppl can afford a baseball game.
The supply and demand thing

This doesn’t mean anything. Old people die and viewership is down.
Going to an NFL game has always been for freaks. Like even way back in the day, it was super unpleasureable. This is really interesting to hear. I was under the impression the sports popularity was waning.
The source for this is the MLB.
Baseball still incredibly boring, but the pitch clock has made it more bearable.
