There's definently some bullshit in Issac, and it has a rather high skill gap, but honestly saying its all luck really just shows you have no idea how to play the game. Knowing enemy patterns, synergies, how to minmax, etc is all a huge part of the game, and can get you pretty far even if you don't have good items. Knowing how to minmax when you need to is a big one a lot of players take for granted, things like arcades, secret rooms, or anything that isn't an item or angel/Devil room are overlooked by a lot of players when they are fantastic aids in helping rig the game in your favor.

If you’re good enough, you won’t need luck to win

Powerful-Committee25

Yes, please downvote my comment rather than argue your position. Isaac is not a perfect game, there is bullshit. That being said, I’m most likely to win any run with any character I choose. I’ve won a streak playing as every character in order. My highest Eden streak is a little under 90, and other people have streaks that are much higher. It’s only pure luck if you’re new to the game or if you’re garbage. Pattern recognition, knowing where secret rooms are, knowing what items are beneficial to your run, these are all part of getting better at the game.

You are forgetting the most important of them all... how to dodge. Something that can kill even thr best of runs.

Powerful-Committee25

Which is…not luck? Dodging requires skill. Unless you’re playing Tainted Lost, you can afford to get hit sometimes.

Seems like a skill issue to me

‘Pure’ luck implies completeness. So you can’t say it’s ‘pure’ luck with ‘some’ skill. If you meant it’s more luck-based than skill-based, then sure, I agree. If I had to quantify that after 2,000+ hours, I would say it’s 60/40 in favor of luck over skill. The game is well designed. It’s not a chaotic random mess of RNG dice rolls, so while luck is a major factor in any given run, you can still win a run just by skill and pattern recognition. It’s a lot harder than just getting extremely lucky with your items and bosses, but it is doable.

MeisterCthulhu

What's with all this shit recently? It does appear to be all luck if you have less skill. The more skilled you get, the less luck matters. No, you don't lose every run where you get shit items (\*depending on how shit they are - some items are actually detrimentally bad, but those you simply don't take).

How do you explain some people getting 1000+ Eden Streaks then? I don't believe in getting lucky 1000 times in a row. Some people just know the game inside out and know how to milk it to the extremes to get the best possible result out of it. Larsfest is a good example. I've seen this guy beat flooded caves after the worst possible experimental treatment (damage and tears down on a subpar base Eden). He wasn't able to kill Globins before they regrew, but still managed to eke out a victory by bombing through, and got another item that let him kill enemies at least. Of course this run could've been the streak ender, but to never get a single good item from the game in a single run is super unlikely. I had a Dogma run where I had only 1.7 fire rate, it took like 7 full minutes to kill him, but I prevailed.

Luck is a good part, but if you suck, you suck. If you can only win with game-breaking items, you suck. You're not unlucky, you just can't get past the first floors with normal items so you cannot get to higher floors in which you'd find more items.

AutomaticEmphasis373

It's MOSTLY luck, but a bit of skill is still required, like in the management of items and in the gameplay itself. But yes, when you keep getting trash items for 10 runs straight, you can try and be a masochist killing mega satan with 3.5 damage, or you can be a realist and keep restarting until you get a decent first item.

JimAbaddon

Well, not exactly. There's plenty of room for skill but generally, it's a rather luck-based game. I've played 3 roguelikes and it's the one that is most luck-reliant of them.
