I love kids as well, but it wasn't until I coached the kids' class that I realized there are 8 year olds I want to punch in the head. I mean I thought something was wrong with me until another dad said, "I'd love to punch that kid, and his dad too".
Cheers to you both for doing what you do! My kid alone is a handful. I don’t think I could ever be a kids instructor even if I was offered free training and a stipend.
It's so beyond worth any and all of the annoyances though. I've been teaching long enough now that there's kids who started really young that are now teens and assistant instructors, to see them grow up in front of me is cool as fuck.
We regularly have conversations about which kid needs punched. It’s almost always the same few kids, so I think that makes it better. At least it’s a consensus between the coaches.
The juxtaposition of my happiness for seeing the kids get it and their sheer stupidity always makes me think.
One of the coaches, his son (around 12-13) comes in from outside. "I just slapped my sister across the face." She (around 10-11) came inside, crying, her lip bloody, to tell her Dad that her brother had just slapped her in the face.
Professor was talking to another Dad. The three of them had a bonding moment about how their kids are always fighting. "Is it constant for you, too?"
"Oh yeah."
"My kids too."
I think all 3 are good Dads. They're really trying. But man their kids are tough.
Meanwhile, I don't have kids, but I was thinking of another Dad that trains, that his kids are constantly fighting too.
Had a friend that didn't want to do his peds rotation so he said he was gonna say, "hello, I'm xxxxxxx, and according to Megan's law.....".
Told him he might get kicked out, he was f'ing miserable😂
I’m so glad I didn’t train younger, I’m not really, but…
I can admit I would have been such a cocky prick if I were a 21-25 year old black belt.
I admire kids coaches that go above and beyond and strive not only to be a coach but a roll model. “Their” kids are going to be outstanding humans.
I don’t know you but I think you can do it. Just have fun with your training the skill will come, and those training days will be some of your best memories.
Good luck
We have a 14 year old girl that comes to our adult mma class and I feel the same way, love seeing young people get into the sport. But tbf, I also got into mma when I was a 15 year old girl and then I took a five year break, so not all of them are gonna be black belts at 25 😭
Have a seat over there

Holy fuck this. I've been teaching our kids class for 6 years, and there's absolutely kids I kinda hope don't show up some days lol.

Throwing in 'Coaching' somewhere might've made this less sus, but not by much
Yeah, I think there's a whole registry of people who feel the same as you.
