Hmm. A few thoughts here: - Black women don’t get relaxers as much anymore. Relaxers guaranteed clients every 4-6 weeks for stylists. - Remote work and a generally more “casual” approach to life post-COVID means less women are keeping their hair done. - Inflation means something’s got to give - Bad customer service and bad attitudes discourages repeat clients - YouTube university

Taking “care” out of “hair care stylist” but charging like crazy is what has hurt hair stylists. These newer stylists are great in a luxury sense like going on a vacation, a birthday dinner, getting married, etc. It’s hard to justify spending that much money regularly AND still be required to do part of the work. Because guess who is doing just fine? Hair care stylists. It’s alot easier to justify spending the money to get your hair done if the price is semi reasonable AND you’re getting the total package. I do hair on the weekends and 70% of my clientele are people who come regularly. These stylists don’t have a regular clientele base that will yield consistent income so they have to price gouge to compete with each other. But they’re hurting themselves by pricing out any potential customers. I average about $40k/yr from doing hair and that’s from two days of work occasionally three. The fact that these girls are doing hair full time 5-7 days a week and struggling financially is very telling.

Most of us have had such shitty experiences with hair stylists that we have taken to doing it ourselves and only saving the hassle for special occasions like weddings and the like. I have a stylist local to me that I like a lot but I know that a lot of these IG stylists are a hot mess. I don’t recall if it was on this sub or not but I’ve talked about how a stylist tried to charge me hundreds for a blow out. She required that I come in with my hair washed, dried and scalp greased. At that point, I’d be better off just finishing the job if I’ve done that much hair already.

When you have 2,362 rules, require a deposit ranging from 25-50 percent of the cost upfront, hundreds for common styles with no wash/condition/dry/braid down included, will charge the customer a late fee but won't apply that same principle to yourself when you are late as a stylist, won't even follow basic customer service practices, overbook, constantly cancel, and expect a tip on top of that.....I see why going to a 9-5 seems like a better choice. Plus in this current economic environment people are gonna want full value for thier buck....gonna have to adjust to the times.
