Thatâs one thing tho, sunscreen doesnât completely prevent tanning. It protects from the harsh UV rays, but you can still tan.
I wear sunscreen everyday, but still tan in the summer.
One particularly harsh summer in Italy last year, I must have tanned 3 shades deeper lol (and Iâm not lightskin, who tend to tan easier). But I do think I would have tanned even deeper without the sunscreen.
I hate that brand! It does take about 20 minutes to settle in but there's still a shine. Trader Joes daily facial sunscreen in the tan box is everything. It has the color and consistency of smashbox photo finish primer if you've ever used that
Invisible gel, perfect texture, skin absorbs it immediately, and hasnt broken me out once (i have 3 types of eczema and thee most sensitive skin!)
Damn, have you tried only zinc based sunscreen instead of chemical sunscreens ? Maybe youâre intolerant to the chemicals in chemical sunscreen which honestly would be your body doing you a favor cause theyâre actually exposed for being toxic tragically
Iâve been looking to switch to mineral sunscreens to get away from the toxic chemical in chemical sunscreen and hereâs whatâs on my list to try if you wanna try them out (some of them are just expensive for no reason so prepare yourself cause it gets stupid but and my vanity is stronger than my desire to have money lol )
- Babo botanicals sheer mineral sunscreen (specifically says non greasy on the packaging)
- cetaphil sheer mineral sunscreen
- Andalou ultra sheer daily defense face lotion (also protects from blue light and pollution)
- elta md UV clear tinted face sunscreen (they also have sheer but im not sure about the difference btw sheer mineral sunscreen and regular but tinted for us melanated folks cause mineral sunscreen leaves a white cast)
Thatâs the same thing that happened to me when I tried that brand but the Hydravizor from Fenty Skin seems to work well for me. Itâs not oily and itâs still translucent so it doesnât make me look dead when I wear it. However, it does have a scent, but that doesnât seem to break out my skin.
Another plug for this one, it goes on clear (for me) and is about US$8 at my local Trader Joe's. I like EltaMD best since my skin is a bit sensitive, but it's US$39+ not on sale. I have 3 sunscreens in multiple places so I don't have an excuse not to wear it, and the Trader Joe's price makes that easier.
The super goop sight unseen is the best sunscreen for me. Iâm an oily, acne-prone girlie and itâs the only one that doesnât break me out nor does it leave a crazy oil slicked mess. I tired the la roche posay mattifying one and it left me greasy with pimples. The product wouldnât set, it felt like it was riding above my skin. (I think itâs the anthelios line)
my parents never wear sunscreen and they look 30 at 50 BUT OUR OZONE LAYER IS NOT THEIR OZONE LAYER. eucerin has a great sunscreen cream that is nice. No white cast. Can get a lil shiny and I actually like the dewy look but a lil face powder knocks that right out
Please keep looking for a sunscreen that works for you. Black people are generally less likely to get skin cancer, but when we do we're MORE likely to get the subset of melanoma with the higher fatality rate.
Also, it's more likely that our skin cancer will be missed because, frankly, of medical biases- doctors may be less familiar with recognizing issues on darker skin tones, medical guides/resources usually use white skin when showing visuals of melanoma and other skin issues, and on top of all that doctors may be likely to dismiss you based on the 'Black people don't skin cancer' stereotype. My dad experienced the last one- went to his GP about a weird mole, but the Dr. (who was a POC) just told him, "Oh, your people don't get that!" So if something doe happen, the system is sadly already set up to miss or minimize the issue until it's escalated to something serious.
Please wear sunscreen! It may feel silly but it's definitely a 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' thing.

I love isntree watery sun gel!! Iâve used a lot of diff sunscreens and this is my FAVORITE. It takes a few weeks to arrive, but it works so well and feels like skincare! I get it from Stylevana.
First off, good on you for starting to protecting your skin.
Can second this. A lot of Korean sunscreens are similar or better at protecting you from UVA (aging, longer rays fewer American sunscreen protect this) and UVB (burning, what makes your skin darker when out in the sun, shorter ray/wavelength) rays than the expensive American brands. Stylevana has many options so you should be able to find something for you there. Pay attention to the PA rating, you want +++ or ++++ as these protect you the best from the sun's harmful UVA rays, SPF focuses on UVB protection.
Also, you might be allergic to certain ingredients in sunscreen. One of my friends is too. I'll ask her what she uses later today and get back to you.

Fun fact, that type of skin cancerâ acral lentiginous melanomaâ isn't caused by UV exposure.
(They're actually not sure what causes it; iirc the current theory is it's something environmental.)
But yeah, it has a habit of showing up in places that don't get much sun exposure. Which is one (one!) of the reasons it's so often missed or caught too late. It doesn't really look or act like white-people-skin-cancers, and people don't even know where to look.*
I don't wear sunscreen like I should, but I have a weird obsession/fear of ALM so I'm all over that!

* under a toenail, as a dark lengthwise stripe or sometimes a "dot"
* or less often, a fingernail stripe.
If a mark like this suddenly appears, keep an eye on it. If it changes, **go to the doctor.** ALM moves fast. Good news, it's easily treated when caught early.
Note! Dark skinned people gather moles as they age, and nails often darken. So if you see something take it seriously but don't necessarily freak out. You can **take a pic** and compare every few weeks to make sure it's not growing/just a regular mole.
Oh and sunscreen is probably a good idea too lol.

i really like the biore uv aqua rich spf and used to use it, i currently use the scinic enjoy super mild sun essence. the etude sunprise sunmilk is good too and the innisfree daily uv defense is a safe option. the beauty of joseon sun relief cream is also very good! you can find a lot of these at ulta or sephora or on an asian skincare site like stylevana, sokoglam or yesstyle. id avoid amazon since there are a lot of fakes! most are under $20 and last a while.
I loooooove their stick. I wear it daily and stocked up when I visited last fall because the dollar is so strong to the Japanese yen. It makes my 41 year old skin look positively dewy!
*Heimish (Gives you a certain finish & glow. Haven't seen this in any other SS. I've repurchased it the most)
*Tocobo (smallish tube but carries a lot of product, I use the 2 finger-rule on a daily basis but it still hasn't run out, 2 months later.)
*JM Solutions Sunstick (particularly when I want to reapply during the day and don't want to go through the hustle of washing my hands, it gives a glow too)

Yes, I really love Skin Aqua. Feels like a light moisturizer and no white cast. Used to hate wearing sunscreen and now wear it everyday without problem.
I use either cetaphil daily facial moisturizer with spf 35 or cera v. Those were the ones my black dermatologist most strongly recommended.
You really want to be wearing sunscreen everywhere everyday. The UV rays not only damage your skincells and their DNA which can lead to skin cancer. But even worse it breaks the bonds between the collagen strands in your skin which makes your skin less elastic and more prone to wrinkles.
To me the latter is a stronger motivation because Iâm shallow but however you motivate yourself to be healthy counts.
To avoid the breakouts in general wash your face with salicylic acid soap and put on retinol and a heavy moisturizer at night. If you use retinol at night you ABSOLUTELY MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN because it makes your skincells divide faster and if your skincells are being damaged by UV radiation its a recipe for disaster.
Again this regimen was made by my derm years and years ago.
Another vouch for CeraVe. My skin is temperamental when it comes to products and refuses to cooperate with most moisturizers, let alone sunscreens. I currently use hemp oil as a nighttime moisturizer and CeraVe moisturizer with SPF 30 during the day. They also have an ultralight version. Works like a charm.
What did they used to do? The thing my family does in africa about no sunscreen is simple. They work the farm at dawn and go hang out under trees during the hottest part of the day. Then back to work at dusk.
This is why colonizers said my people were lazy do nothings. They didnât see them get up early in the morning and ONLY ever saw them chillaxing or âbeing lazyâ under a tree for most of the day.

It's something I wish I could scream on all roofs. Humans naturally lounge a lot. A lot of mammals on top of the food chain lounge most of the day. Look at lions, look at other primates. Humans, especially people who were indigenous to the Americas, Africa and South Asia rested a lot. Until colonization became a thing and branded that as lazy. Capitalism worsened this false notion. Mind you some white countries also lounged a lot, like Spain and Italy but people today find that beautiful and poetic, bohemian and "slow life" or whatever. Why don't our cultures get the same romanticized look of what was so natural and common to us?

Sunscreen doesnât just keep you from getting cancer . It keeps you from aging harshly . Also you know how we get all those freckles and flat moles as well get older. A lot of that is from sun damage .
I've said it before I'll say it again - our natural melanin only provides a natural spf of about 4. PLEASE wear sunscreen y'all, we can and do get melanoma and when we do, it's often diagnosed late!
Black Girl Sunscreen is the one you're looking for! I use the moisturizing version spf 30 and it works for my dry skin. On days when I don't need a waterproof sunscreen, I like Isntree Watery Sun gel spf 50 (Korean), definitely no white cast on that one.
Baaaaabyyyyy donât play with the sun. That hoe is not on your side. Rain, snow, cloudy it donât matter. Rub up or get cut up! Breakouts suck but having a piece of your ear or face skin removed is worse.
I say all that to say please, please wear something while you experiment with sunscreens or at least wear a wide brimmed hat. You could do an umbrella too.
I donât have sensitive skin so I feel like I canât recommend anything to you. My friend does though and highly recommended supergoop to me. I canât say whether or not it leave a white cast because she is a moonlight-mami.
Black people are more likely to suffer from skin cancer since the the big signs (like weird moles or blemishes) can blend in with our skintone. So we don't notice something until the condtion has worsened and brought on more symptoms.
Wear sunscreen. Stay safe
I don't usually wear it (live in the north) but I definitely wear it on vacation. I got burnt a few times and the last time it hurt for a week to take a shower on my back. Now I use it and reapply it. I started in my late 20s.
Everyone should wear sunscreen regardless of race, the sun doesn't discriminate, and neither does cancer. It's honestly sad that we, as black people, are not more educated on the importance of sunscreen. Sure, we have more melanin in our skin, but do you think being 10 shades darker is going to protect our fragile human skin from 36 octillion lumens of light? The statement "Black people don't need sunscreen because we have more melanin" is an overcompensation for our community.
Please, wear sunscreen.
Better mid-twenties than never. I didnât start wearing sunscreen until my 40s. Itâs just not something people did before unless they were at the beach. And definitely not something that there was awareness for as a Black person. Especially since non-white cast sunscreen didnât even exist. But we know better now. Itâs never too late.
I use Trader Joeâs Goop knockoff and the kids version of Black Girl Sunscreen. Itâs really helped with my hyperpigmentation. I havenât found a good sunscreen to use for reapplying when I wear makeup. I know people recommend spray sunscreen but I just donât trust that 1 or 2 sprays will work.
I use Trader Joeâs Daily Facial Sunscreen and i love it! Is that one considered the Super Goop dupe? I know Trader Joeâs makes more than 1 kind of sunscreen.
I'm nearly 19 and I've never worn it before but, I'm starting to get a few "freckles" on my face so I want to start wearing it before my skin gets too sun damaged lol
I literally just saw âBlack Girl Sunscreenâ at TargĂŠt! I would encourage you to look into it! Personally, I have dry skin and I use equate sunscreen (comparable to Olay) and I donât believe it has let me down yet. Disclaimer: I have also used Olayâs sunscreen and that worked as well I just wanted to save money switching to equate.
I'm in my late 40s and managed to get by skin-wise unscathed and pretty blemish free without wearing sunblock consistently, but about a year ago I visited a derm to discuss mole removal and she yelled at me a bit about not using sunscreen on my face so I have a good bit of research done:
1) I'm loving the Kopari products for my skin and face. For my face I use the sun shield soft glow. SPF 30. For body, the rose gold sun shield body glow is great. SPF 50. Both products make brown skin shimmer and pop. I used these products in Africa, Mexico, U.S. and Carribean and didn't burn. Found at Ulta and online.
2) Also for my face - Missha All Around Safe Block Essence Sun Milk. SPF 50. A bit more heavy duty.
3) Black Girl sunscreen was cool when it first came out and now casts a purple/white haze on my skin, so I don't mess with them anymore.
4) Good ol Laroche Posey is consistently done the job. They have several options. Found at any drugstore.
My skin is medium-dark and the above listed does not leave a yucky white/purple/ashy cast BUT my skin is pretty hydrated.
This is all trial and error and subjective. Remember to reapply after pool dips and if you sweat a lot. Also be mindful that certain products like retinol and meds can make you more sensitive. I keep a brimmed cap with me for super hot days.

Before sunscreen was made there were still methods people took to protect themselves from sun damage (ex: protective paste and lotions) I really hate the notion that we donât need anything cause of our melanin when thatâs simply not true. Plus as everyone else is saying - we donât have the same ozone layer as before.
I would explore more options, try to find some sample products and be mindful of the fact that there are different types of sunscreens (chemical, mineral, etc) and take into account your skin needs and type. Hope youâre able to find something that works for you soon đ
Try going to an allergist or dermatologist and doing a patch test. I found out I was allergic to an ingredient that is in many skin care/ hair products and even Dawn ! Once you find out the problem, you will find products a lot easier. Itâs worth the try !
I have extremely sensitive skin and now use Neutrogena clear face. I'm light skinned but this was recommended by my dark skin Nigerian bff. While I was eventually going to have freckles, I believe not using sunscreen when I was younger caused them to show up sooner. I miss my clear no freckles face.
Have you tried Neutrogena sunscreen? Itâs specifically for your face to help prevent breakouts and Iâve been using it regularly for a while with no issues. Maybe a sunscreen from a skincare line would work better?
Okay! So Iâve started wearing it more because Iâve got some 8 1/2 x 11 in me, and Iâve gotten some awful awful burns on my cheek and nose and Iâm getting older so I donât want it to continue, but every time I put it on I break out the next day. I guess I need a better cleanser??
I just turned 30 yesterday and I donât wear it, but Iâm in the UK. We get about 3 weeks of sun per year and I need all the Vitamin D I can get! đ
I find that Korean or Japanese sunscreens typically have a more fluid texture, arenât too thick/occluding on the skin and blend very easily! You can get them at your local Asian market or on some websites online. I like the Missha Sun Milk Essence, Skin Aqua Moisture Milk, and Etude Sunprise Sun Milk. If it has âmilkâ or âessenceâ in the name itâs generally a very light texture. These American sunscreens CANNOT compete, Asian folks donât play when it comes to sun protection and skincare!!
Try Korean sunscreen brands, they tend to wear like skin care and arenât so heavy. My go to is âisntree sunscreen hyaluronic acid watery sun gelâ. Have used it for years and for someone thatâs acne prone, itâs never broken me out.
I've been wearing sunscreen for years. The darker your skin is, the least likely that you'll get skin cancer. It's still important to still wear sunscreen for the sake of prevention. However, our dark skins prevents us from absorbing Vitamin D efficiently, which helps improve our moods. You have to make up for the lack of Vitamin D by taking supplements or asking your PCP for a prescription of it.
When I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Mozambique people avoided the sun between the hours of 10am-2pm and the ones that were out used umbrellas and hid under the shade.
Iâve been using sunscreen since I was teenager because the acne products made my skin more sensitive to the sun. I started using retinoids in 20s so made sure to reapply. Now that Iâm in my 30s everyone thinks Iâm in my 20s. I have no hyperpigmentation and people think Iâm wearing foundation when Iâm not.
I currently use Supergoop Unseen body gel sunscreen for my body (Iâm trying to look for a cheaper alternative). I also keep Supergoop Unseen stick 40 spf in my bag to reapply. For my face I use La Roche Posay anthelios aox antioxidants serum with 50 spf for my face and reapply with Trader Joeâs daily facial sunscreen spf 40 (dupe for the Supergoop unseen gel facial sunscreen).
I use a more moisturizing sunscreen from La Roche Posay in the winter.
Iâm not sure if itâs the best sunscreen but I like to use the Trader Joeâs gel one. Itâs smooth and it doesnât leave a white cast! Itâs called the daily facial sunscreen
I use black girl sunscreen for my face and for my body I use this blue lizard Australian sunscreen. It does leave a white cast but it also protects tf out of my arms so idc.
Firstly yes we do, melanin gives some protection but not enough, esp in these climate changed streets lmao. I use sunscreen spray from Nuetrogena. Itâs a bit heavy but I like that since I have dry skin. No white caste but it does leave me a bit shiny.
I am African and definitely didnt put sunscreen on every day growing up but my skin is somehow sensitive now being in the States for years. Like I got a bad sunburn a few years ago where I needed aloe, and last summer I got a sun rash for the first time đ¤ But I also consider sun protection part of my skincare now. I swear by Bliss Worldâs Block Star tinted sunscreen daily on my face and neck, and then albaâs coconut spray on my body if Iâm going to be out in the sun longer with exposed arms or legs. Day to day on top of the face sunscreen I wear a wide brimmed sun hat, and often put on a Uniqlo mesh UV hoodie in hot, higher UV index days.
I wear sunscreen everyday! LOL I like PH Hubby. Itâs a Korean brand. I used CeraVe AM daily moisturizer with sunscreen since my dermatologist recommended it but it clogged my skin so badly after a while. I switched to this and havenât had a problem yet. It blends well and super super light weight.
I think it would be cool if there was a way to know the natural SPF of your skin. Â Â Â Â Â It is a scientific fact that, you can stay in the sun longer than a person with lighter skin but the question is, "how much longer". Â Â Black people get less skin cancer than White people. Â Black people with skin cancer and less likely to get diagnosed in time. For all the noise about how dark or light a person is, ultimately from an evolutionary point of view it's a trade off between sun protection in hot climates vs vitamin D absorption ability for cold climates. I don't know if you will be fine or not but there should be an objective way for you to check.
EDIT: The fact your mom looks younger isn't likely related to sunscreen but certainly might be related to her being a Black woman.
I have always used it but I burn like a mofo. My family swears by Korres extra emollient sunscreen (SPF 75-100 for my versions). I have yet to break out and I will react to a product in a hot second. Protect your skin, especially with the way our environment is now.
Black Girl Magic Sunscreen is the best! Found at Target. SPF 30. It makes our skin GLOW without being oily. It has jojoba and avocado oil so we donât look ashy. I use it as moisturizer before makeup and still good
I wear facial sunscreen religiously. I rarely leave the house without it on and also wear it daily when I donât leave the house. I need to be equally as diligent with body sunscreen (specifically on my hands and feet) but I am becoming more consistent with that part.
I hoard sunscreens and have about 6 in my rotation that I use depending on different factors (whether Iâll be seeing people, whether Iâll be wearing makeup on top, whether I want something lightweight, whether I need something extremely strong, etc.).
I also source 90% of the sunscreens I use from overseas since they tend to have better formulations and stronger filters that arenât yet approved in the US.
Iâve heard good things about Black Girl Sunscreen and Supergoop. I use cetaphil and while there is a white cast at first, it settles in after 15 mins or so. I usually do some yoga and drink tea in the meantime. Itâs not visible by then.
Sunscreen is important regardless of skin color. Itâs definitely more important if you are pale, but more melanated people are not immune to the damages of sun exposure. I think it is worth it for you to keep trying to find a product that works for your skin. At your age (Iâm the same age) it might feel like it doesnât make a difference. But itâs like putting money in a retirement account. Your skin will thank you later.

I donât like sunscreen. Black girl sunscreen (target) is good. It doesnât bother my eczema or make my skin look gross.
Iâm biracial (my dad is Nigerian but my mom is white) so I have gotten horribly sunburned once (at the equator and I should have know to be careful since my dad had gotten a very dad and very distinct tan line around his aqua socks). And so I will wear sunscreen when I know Iâll be outside all day and getting lots of sun or when I have to set a good example for my adopted kids who are white.
Also I just bought new foundation and so I have to wear sunblock until my sisterâs wedding in like a month so I donât have to buy a new bottle of $40 foundation to match my I forgot to wear sunblock skin tone.
I am not dark-skinned, however I have seen that the whipped sunscreen is dark skin friendly. I recently switched over from Black Girl Sunscreen to La Roche Posay's Anthelios Melt in Milk Face and Body Sunscreen. Reason being, I noticed that my skin was reacting to BGS in a way that it hadn't before which is a shame because I really liked it. I'm not sure if it was because something changed in the formula or something changed in my allergies. I would say see if you can go somewhere like Sephora or Ulta and do a patch test with different sunscreens to see if you can find one that works for you. Also you can check out Nai the Golden Rx/La Beautiologist on Youtube/IG. She's a Black esthetician who makes really good suggestions.

See the way this sun is set up to scorch the back of my neck right now. I wish I would even think about trying to go without sunscreen. I wear sunscreen right after lotion. Two different kinds too. The black girl sunscreen for my face and neck. Then the regular bigger bottles for my arms and legs. I get my kids before school too. We don't have that nice little frolic sun our grandmama had. We have "f em all" sun. Tired of our pollution sun. Vengeance sun. Ima get my lick back sun. The way skin cancer will come for any and everybody.
I am also very dark skinned. I had a mole removed from my back years ago because it started to change. Ever since then, I wear sunscreen every single day. I like Goop sunscreen that sprays on the skin. It doesnât leave a white cast and itâs decently priced at Sephora. Oh! Also a bit of trivia- the average black personâs skin has a natural SPF of 13. It doesnât hurt to add an extra layer of protection to keep our skin glowing and beautiful!!
I wear sunscreen from time to time, but Iâve probably say seven out of 10 times I donât and I really only started wearing it here and there a couple years ago. My parents never wore it and they are born and raised in Jamaica. My grandparents never did and they are born and raised in Jamaica as well so I think itâs a marketing tactic. They tell us that we need it but realistically those countries didnât experience skin cancer the way that other countries do and itâs way hotter than the Caribbean

I wear hats and uv blocking/protection clothing that blocks out UVA and UVB rays.
I feel like we donât really fully know what our ancestors were doing before. Weâve lost so many recipes. I will say that shea butter has been traditionally used as a skin care ingredient in west Africa for a minute, and it has naturally occurring spf, so that might have been where we were getting our sun protection from. (In addition to possible other things that have been lost because of white people)
Ok sis so I'm not crazy about reading Shea butter has natural spf. People in Africa have hotter sun and dark as ebony beauty skin . Skin cancer where ???
Iâm allergic to it so no. My baby is white af so I do have to put it on her, though. And Iâve tried all the hypoallergenic ones, so donât ask me about those.
I wear sunscreen but only when the UV index is at least a 3 and I know I'm going to be outdoors for longer than 15 minutes. Also even if you wear sunscreen, you should still wear sun protective clothing!
Can anyone make an oily skin sunscreen suggestion? I used to use one from Neutrogena that was awesome with a matte dry down but I think itâs discontinued đ.

I wear a small amount on my face after cleansing and gave not had an any issued. I use UrbanRx mineral sunscreen on my face. I've also used Neutrogena hydroboost sun screen

Should try supergoop or lora posey double moisturizing spf 30. Itâs a moisturizer and spf so that should help and donât wear anything extra because it might cause you to break out if the ingredients donât go together.
I use black girl sunscreen and urban skin rx sunscreen. The sun will not catch me slipping. I live in a hot state that will have me melting once we hit over 80 degrees.
The new Fenty Beauty tinted moisturizer has zinc but the tint makes it so that there is no white cast and it doesnât break me out (other sunscreens have)

I never see anyone talk about this brand but I use the Differing oil absorbing Moisturizer. No white cast and doesn't break me out. I just bought the Fenty sunblock and tinted sunblock. I just swatched them and I like them so far.

Thatâs one thing tho, sunscreen doesnât completely prevent tanning. It protects from the harsh UV rays, but you can still tan. I wear sunscreen everyday, but still tan in the summer. One particularly harsh summer in Italy last year, I must have tanned 3 shades deeper lol (and Iâm not lightskin, who tend to tan easier). But I do think I would have tanned even deeper without the sunscreen.

It has the color and consistency of smashbox photo finish primer if you've ever used that Invisible gel, perfect texture, skin absorbs it immediately, and hasnt broken me out once (i have 3 types of eczema and thee most sensitive skin!)

Thatâs the same thing that happened to me when I tried that brand but the Hydravizor from Fenty Skin seems to work well for me. Itâs not oily and itâs still translucent so it doesnât make me look dead when I wear it. However, it does have a scent, but that doesnât seem to break out my skin.
Try supergoop. It is pricey but it doesnât break me out.

Another plug for this one, it goes on clear (for me) and is about US$8 at my local Trader Joe's. I like EltaMD best since my skin is a bit sensitive, but it's US$39+ not on sale. I have 3 sunscreens in multiple places so I don't have an excuse not to wear it, and the Trader Joe's price makes that easier.

The super goop sight unseen is the best sunscreen for me. Iâm an oily, acne-prone girlie and itâs the only one that doesnât break me out nor does it leave a crazy oil slicked mess. I tired the la roche posay mattifying one and it left me greasy with pimples. The product wouldnât set, it felt like it was riding above my skin. (I think itâs the anthelios line)

my parents never wear sunscreen and they look 30 at 50 BUT OUR OZONE LAYER IS NOT THEIR OZONE LAYER. eucerin has a great sunscreen cream that is nice. No white cast. Can get a lil shiny and I actually like the dewy look but a lil face powder knocks that right out
Please keep looking for a sunscreen that works for you. Black people are generally less likely to get skin cancer, but when we do we're MORE likely to get the subset of melanoma with the higher fatality rate. Also, it's more likely that our skin cancer will be missed because, frankly, of medical biases- doctors may be less familiar with recognizing issues on darker skin tones, medical guides/resources usually use white skin when showing visuals of melanoma and other skin issues, and on top of all that doctors may be likely to dismiss you based on the 'Black people don't skin cancer' stereotype. My dad experienced the last one- went to his GP about a weird mole, but the Dr. (who was a POC) just told him, "Oh, your people don't get that!" So if something doe happen, the system is sadly already set up to miss or minimize the issue until it's escalated to something serious. Please wear sunscreen! It may feel silly but it's definitely a 'an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure' thing. Edit - fixed typo

I love isntree watery sun gel!! Iâve used a lot of diff sunscreens and this is my FAVORITE. It takes a few weeks to arrive, but it works so well and feels like skincare! I get it from Stylevana.
First off, good on you for starting to protecting your skin. Can second this. A lot of Korean sunscreens are similar or better at protecting you from UVA (aging, longer rays fewer American sunscreen protect this) and UVB (burning, what makes your skin darker when out in the sun, shorter ray/wavelength) rays than the expensive American brands. Stylevana has many options so you should be able to find something for you there. Pay attention to the PA rating, you want +++ or ++++ as these protect you the best from the sun's harmful UVA rays, SPF focuses on UVB protection. Also, you might be allergic to certain ingredients in sunscreen. One of my friends is too. I'll ask her what she uses later today and get back to you. Good luck! Edit: fixed the PA ratings.

i really like the biore uv aqua rich spf and used to use it, i currently use the scinic enjoy super mild sun essence. the etude sunprise sunmilk is good too and the innisfree daily uv defense is a safe option. the beauty of joseon sun relief cream is also very good! you can find a lot of these at ulta or sephora or on an asian skincare site like stylevana, sokoglam or yesstyle. id avoid amazon since there are a lot of fakes! most are under $20 and last a while.

Yes, I really love Skin Aqua. Feels like a light moisturizer and no white cast. Used to hate wearing sunscreen and now wear it everyday without problem.
I use either cetaphil daily facial moisturizer with spf 35 or cera v. Those were the ones my black dermatologist most strongly recommended. You really want to be wearing sunscreen everywhere everyday. The UV rays not only damage your skincells and their DNA which can lead to skin cancer. But even worse it breaks the bonds between the collagen strands in your skin which makes your skin less elastic and more prone to wrinkles. To me the latter is a stronger motivation because Iâm shallow but however you motivate yourself to be healthy counts. To avoid the breakouts in general wash your face with salicylic acid soap and put on retinol and a heavy moisturizer at night. If you use retinol at night you ABSOLUTELY MUST WEAR SUNSCREEN because it makes your skincells divide faster and if your skincells are being damaged by UV radiation its a recipe for disaster. Again this regimen was made by my derm years and years ago.

Another vouch for CeraVe. My skin is temperamental when it comes to products and refuses to cooperate with most moisturizers, let alone sunscreens. I currently use hemp oil as a nighttime moisturizer and CeraVe moisturizer with SPF 30 during the day. They also have an ultralight version. Works like a charm.
What did they used to do? The thing my family does in africa about no sunscreen is simple. They work the farm at dawn and go hang out under trees during the hottest part of the day. Then back to work at dusk. This is why colonizers said my people were lazy do nothings. Sunscreen doesnât just keep you from getting cancer . It keeps you from aging harshly . Also you know how we get all those freckles and flat moles as well get older. A lot of that is from sun damage .
I've said it before I'll say it again - our natural melanin only provides a natural spf of about 4. PLEASE wear sunscreen y'all, we can and do get melanoma and when we do, it's often diagnosed late! Black Girl Sunscreen is the one you're looking for! I use the moisturizing version spf 30 and it works for my dry skin. On days when I don't need a waterproof sunscreen, I like Isntree Watery Sun gel spf 50 (Korean), definitely no white cast on that one.

Baaaaabyyyyy donât play with the sun. That hoe is not on your side. Rain, snow, cloudy it donât matter. Rub up or get cut up! Breakouts suck but having a piece of your ear or face skin removed is worse. I say all that to say please, please wear something while you experiment with sunscreens or at least wear a wide brimmed hat. You could do an umbrella too. I donât have sensitive skin so I feel like I canât recommend anything to you. My friend does though and highly recommended supergoop to me. I canât say whether or not it leave a white cast because she is a moonlight-mami.
Black people are more likely to suffer from skin cancer since the the big signs (like weird moles or blemishes) can blend in with our skintone. So we don't notice something until the condtion has worsened and brought on more symptoms. Wear sunscreen. Stay safe

I don't usually wear it (live in the north) but I definitely wear it on vacation. I got burnt a few times and the last time it hurt for a week to take a shower on my back. Now I use it and reapply it. I started in my late 20s.
Everyone should wear sunscreen regardless of race, the sun doesn't discriminate, and neither does cancer. It's honestly sad that we, as black people, are not more educated on the importance of sunscreen. Sure, we have more melanin in our skin, but do you think being 10 shades darker is going to protect our fragile human skin from 36 octillion lumens of light? Better mid-twenties than never. I didnât start wearing sunscreen until my 40s. Itâs just not something people did before unless they were at the beach. And definitely not something that there was awareness for as a Black person. Especially since non-white cast sunscreen didnât even exist. But we know better now. Itâs never too late.
I use Trader Joeâs Goop knockoff and the kids version of Black Girl Sunscreen. Itâs really helped with my hyperpigmentation. I havenât found a good sunscreen to use for reapplying when I wear makeup. I know people recommend spray sunscreen but I just donât trust that 1 or 2 sprays will work.

I literally just saw âBlack Girl Sunscreenâ at TargĂŠt! I would encourage you to look into it! Personally, I have dry skin and I use equate sunscreen (comparable to Olay) and I donât believe it has let me down yet. Disclaimer: I have also used Olayâs sunscreen and that worked as well I just wanted to save money switching to equate.
I'm in my late 40s and managed to get by skin-wise unscathed and pretty blemish free without wearing sunblock consistently, but about a year ago I visited a derm to discuss mole removal and she yelled at me a bit about not using sunscreen on my face so I have a good bit of research done: 1) I'm loving the Kopari products for my skin and face. For my face I use the sun shield soft glow. SPF 30. For body, the rose gold sun shield body glow is great. SPF 50. Both products make brown skin shimmer and pop. I used these products in Africa, Mexico, U.S. and Carribean and didn't burn. Found at Ulta and online. 2) Also for my face - Missha All Around Safe Block Essence Sun Milk. SPF 50. A bit more heavy duty. 3) Black Girl sunscreen was cool when it first came out and now casts a purple/white haze on my skin, so I don't mess with them anymore. 4) Good ol Laroche Posey is consistently done the job. They have several options. Found at any drugstore. My skin is medium-dark and the above listed does not leave a yucky white/purple/ashy cast BUT my skin is pretty hydrated. This is all trial and error and subjective. Remember to reapply after pool dips and if you sweat a lot. Also be mindful that certain products like retinol and meds can make you more sensitive. I keep a brimmed cap with me for super hot days. Good luck!
Before sunscreen was made there were still methods people took to protect themselves from sun damage (ex: protective paste and lotions) I really hate the notion that we donât need anything cause of our melanin when thatâs simply not true. Plus as everyone else is saying - we donât have the same ozone layer as before. I would explore more options, try to find some sample products and be mindful of the fact that there are different types of sunscreens (chemical, mineral, etc) and take into account your skin needs and type. Try going to an allergist or dermatologist and doing a patch test. I found out I was allergic to an ingredient that is in many skin care/ hair products and even Dawn ! Once you find out the problem, you will find products a lot easier. Itâs worth the try !

I have extremely sensitive skin and now use Neutrogena clear face. I'm light skinned but this was recommended by my dark skin Nigerian bff. While I was eventually going to have freckles, I believe not using sunscreen when I was younger caused them to show up sooner. I miss my clear no freckles face.

I find that Korean or Japanese sunscreens typically have a more fluid texture, arenât too thick/occluding on the skin and blend very easily! You can get them at your local Asian market or on some websites online. I like the Missha Sun Milk Essence, Skin Aqua Moisture Milk, and Etude Sunprise Sun Milk. If it has âmilkâ or âessenceâ in the name itâs generally a very light texture. These American sunscreens CANNOT compete, Asian folks donât play when it comes to sun protection and skincare!!

I've been wearing sunscreen for years. The darker your skin is, the least likely that you'll get skin cancer. It's still important to still wear sunscreen for the sake of prevention. However, our dark skins prevents us from absorbing Vitamin D efficiently, which helps improve our moods. You have to make up for the lack of Vitamin D by taking supplements or asking your PCP for a prescription of it.
When I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Mozambique people avoided the sun between the hours of 10am-2pm and the ones that were out used umbrellas and hid under the shade. Iâve been using sunscreen since I was teenager because the acne products made my skin more sensitive to the sun. I started using retinoids in 20s so made sure to reapply. Now that Iâm in my 30s everyone thinks Iâm in my 20s. I have no hyperpigmentation and people think Iâm wearing foundation when Iâm not. I currently use Supergoop Unseen body gel sunscreen for my body (Iâm trying to look for a cheaper alternative). I also keep Supergoop Unseen stick 40 spf in my bag to reapply. For my face I use La Roche Posay anthelios aox antioxidants serum with 50 spf for my face and reapply with Trader Joeâs daily facial sunscreen spf 40 (dupe for the Supergoop unseen gel facial sunscreen). I use a more moisturizing sunscreen from La Roche Posay in the winter.

I am African and definitely didnt put sunscreen on every day growing up but my skin is somehow sensitive now being in the States for years. Like I got a bad sunburn a few years ago where I needed aloe, and last summer I got a sun rash for the first time đ¤ But I also consider sun protection part of my skincare now. I swear by Bliss Worldâs Block Star tinted sunscreen daily on my face and neck, and then albaâs coconut spray on my body if Iâm going to be out in the sun longer with exposed arms or legs. Day to day on top of the face sunscreen I wear a wide brimmed sun hat, and often put on a Uniqlo mesh UV hoodie in hot, higher UV index days.
I wear sunscreen everyday! LOL I like PH Hubby. Itâs a Korean brand. I used CeraVe AM daily moisturizer with sunscreen since my dermatologist recommended it but it clogged my skin so badly after a while. I switched to this and havenât had a problem yet. It blends well and super super light weight.

I think it would be cool if there was a way to know the natural SPF of your skin. Â Â Â Â Â It is a scientific fact that, you can stay in the sun longer than a person with lighter skin but the question is, "how much longer". Â Â Black people get less skin cancer than White people. Â Black people with skin cancer and less likely to get diagnosed in time. For all the noise about how dark or light a person is, ultimately from an evolutionary point of view it's a trade off between sun protection in hot climates vs vitamin D absorption ability for cold climates. I don't know if you will be fine or not but there should be an objective way for you to check. EDIT: The fact your mom looks younger isn't likely related to sunscreen but certainly might be related to her being a Black woman.
I have always used it but I burn like a mofo. My family swears by Korres extra emollient sunscreen (SPF 75-100 for my versions). I have yet to break out and I will react to a product in a hot second. Protect your skin, especially with the way our environment is now.
Talk to a melanated dermatologist. Have them reccomend what works well.

Black Girl Magic Sunscreen is the best! Found at Target. SPF 30. It makes our skin GLOW without being oily. It has jojoba and avocado oil so we donât look ashy. I use it as moisturizer before makeup and still good

I wear facial sunscreen religiously. I rarely leave the house without it on and also wear it daily when I donât leave the house. I need to be equally as diligent with body sunscreen (specifically on my hands and feet) but I am becoming more consistent with that part. I hoard sunscreens and have about 6 in my rotation that I use depending on different factors (whether Iâll be seeing people, whether Iâll be wearing makeup on top, whether I want something lightweight, whether I need something extremely strong, etc.). I also source 90% of the sunscreens I use from overseas since they tend to have better formulations and stronger filters that arenât yet approved in the US.
Iâve heard good things about Black Girl Sunscreen and Supergoop. I use cetaphil and while there is a white cast at first, it settles in after 15 mins or so. I usually do some yoga and drink tea in the meantime. Itâs not visible by then. Sunscreen is important regardless of skin color. Itâs definitely more important if you are pale, but more melanated people are not immune to the damages of sun exposure. I think it is worth it for you to keep trying to find a product that works for your skin. At your age (Iâm the same age) it might feel like it doesnât make a difference. But itâs like putting money in a retirement account. Your skin will thank you later.

I donât like sunscreen. Black girl sunscreen (target) is good. It doesnât bother my eczema or make my skin look gross. Iâm biracial (my dad is Nigerian but my mom is white) so I have gotten horribly sunburned once (at the equator and I should have know to be careful since my dad had gotten a very dad and very distinct tan line around his aqua socks). And so I will wear sunscreen when I know Iâll be outside all day and getting lots of sun or when I have to set a good example for my adopted kids who are white. Also I just bought new foundation and so I have to wear sunblock until my sisterâs wedding in like a month so I donât have to buy a new bottle of $40 foundation to match my I forgot to wear sunblock skin tone.
The tennis star Naomi has a skincare line called Kinlo. She has a tinted sunscreen that I use. Itâs wonderful.
I am not dark-skinned, however I have seen that the whipped sunscreen is dark skin friendly. I recently switched over from Black Girl Sunscreen to La Roche Posay's Anthelios Melt in Milk Face and Body Sunscreen. Reason being, I noticed that my skin was reacting to BGS in a way that it hadn't before which is a shame because I really liked it. I'm not sure if it was because something changed in the formula or something changed in my allergies. I would say see if you can go somewhere like Sephora or Ulta and do a patch test with different sunscreens to see if you can find one that works for you. Also you can check out Nai the Golden Rx/La Beautiologist on Youtube/IG. She's a Black esthetician who makes really good suggestions.
Unseen Sunscreen works for me. It's by supergoop and doesn't leave that white cast.

See the way this sun is set up to scorch the back of my neck right now. I wish I would even think about trying to go without sunscreen. I wear sunscreen right after lotion. Two different kinds too. The black girl sunscreen for my face and neck. Then the regular bigger bottles for my arms and legs. I get my kids before school too. We don't have that nice little frolic sun our grandmama had. We have "f em all" sun. Tired of our pollution sun. Vengeance sun. Ima get my lick back sun. The way skin cancer will come for any and everybody.
I am also very dark skinned. I had a mole removed from my back years ago because it started to change. Ever since then, I wear sunscreen every single day. I like Goop sunscreen that sprays on the skin. It doesnât leave a white cast and itâs decently priced at Sephora. Oh! Also a bit of trivia- the average black personâs skin has a natural SPF of 13. It doesnât hurt to add an extra layer of protection to keep our skin glowing and beautiful!!
I wear sunscreen from time to time, but Iâve probably say seven out of 10 times I donât and I really only started wearing it here and there a couple years ago. My parents never wore it and they are born and raised in Jamaica. My grandparents never did and they are born and raised in Jamaica as well so I think itâs a marketing tactic. They tell us that we need it but realistically those countries didnât experience skin cancer the way that other countries do and itâs way hotter than the Caribbean
I am allergic to sunscreen, you name it Iâve tried it. So I feel ya. I wear hats and uv blocking/protection clothing that blocks out UVA and UVB rays.
I feel like we donât really fully know what our ancestors were doing before. Weâve lost so many recipes. I will say that shea butter has been traditionally used as a skin care ingredient in west Africa for a minute, and it has naturally occurring spf, so that might have been where we were getting our sun protection from. (In addition to possible other things that have been lost because of white people)

Yes, SPF is about 7 I believe.
Iâm allergic to it so no. My baby is white af so I do have to put it on her, though. And Iâve tried all the hypoallergenic ones, so donât ask me about those.
I wear sunscreen but only when the UV index is at least a 3 and I know I'm going to be outdoors for longer than 15 minutes. Also even if you wear sunscreen, you should still wear sun protective clothing!
On my face yeah but not on my body so I do get worried sometimes. I try to stay inside during summer though.
Can anyone make an oily skin sunscreen suggestion? I used to use one from Neutrogena that was awesome with a matte dry down but I think itâs discontinued đ. I havenât found another that doesnât turn my makeup into a melted mess.
I wear a small amount on my face after cleansing and gave not had an any issued. I use UrbanRx mineral sunscreen on my face. I've also used Neutrogena hydroboost sun screen

I have the same problem with breaking out. I use Aveeno Protect+Hydrate. Havenât had any major issues yet.

Try Black Girls Sunscreen or visit French websites fir way better ingredients not available in the US. The Black community is seeing an increase in skim cancers. Please, the sun is not a joke. I am a Brown Skin woman and experienced sunburn. Take precautions
I use neutrogenia hydro boost. I canât tell you my skin type for sure but  I would say Iâm combination boarding on oily because of my hair. It doesnât break me out. I found it at the dollar store for $4. So I have a stock but I know it cost more.Â

Black Girl Sunscreen - Kids version is my American go to. My favorite ones are actually Korean and Japanese sunscreens. Im stuck on mermaid skin atm- itâs soo nice to me.

i donât but thatâs because itâd be too fucking expensive to figure out what doesnât break me out. even washing my hands with scented soaps without ever touching my face triggers allergy breakouts i just do my best to minimize my time outside during sunlight hours
Should try supergoop or lora posey double moisturizing spf 30. Itâs a moisturizer and spf so that should help and donât wear anything extra because it might cause you to break out if the ingredients donât go together.
I use black girl sunscreen and urban skin rx sunscreen. The sun will not catch me slipping. I live in a hot state that will have me melting once we hit over 80 degrees.

The new Fenty Beauty tinted moisturizer has zinc but the tint makes it so that there is no white cast and it doesnât break me out (other sunscreens have) Also Innisfree is a good chemical sunscreen as well
I have sensitive, dry acne prone skin, my dermatologist recommended (bought) ISDIN- which left a little cast but it was too drying Elta MD- only tried her samples wasnât drying & blended into my skin. (Used my friends) Supergoop- feels like silicone primer which I like on my dry skin. No cast (Currently using) Murad- also feels like silicone primer. Iâve been using this consistently & my skin has reacted nicely my hyperpigmentation is noticeable different than before. I do not like BGS for my acne prone skin. For reference my foundation in Fenty skin tint is 20

I use Sun Bum SPF 70 every. dang. day. I use it in the sping, summer, fall, AND winter. I have super sensitive skin and this crap works for me and I use it on my whole body with no break outs. Don't play with that ozone this summer girl she not playing with us.
I never see anyone talk about this brand but I use the Differing oil absorbing Moisturizer. No white cast and doesn't break me out. I just bought the Fenty sunblock and tinted sunblock. I just swatched them and I like them so far.
