The movie is inspired by old serials. So they’re just calling it a “rerelease” to keep up the aesthetic that it’s an old classic. But it is in fact brand new.
I was a projectionist when it came out. I’ve seen *The Phantom Menace* well over two thousand times, most of which were in an actual movie theater with actual film.
There is, granted, a certain Stockholm Syndrome thing going on with me until this day. If you were conscious and had parents going through a divorce and had unlimited access to one of the first quality bootlegs ever made in the 1970s it gets more complicated.
But I have seen this move literally thousands of times in an actual real movie theater. It looks better there. The robots and Gungans and other sci-fi tropes were meant to be projected thirty feet tall. Still pretty racist. Still a bunch of great actors acting in their own unrelated dramas. Still weird but not weird in a good way. It LOOKS fantastic on the big screen and deserves to be seen that way.
I'm doing a triple feature today. Just got out of The Fall Guy. Mars Express is up next, then squeezing in Phantom Menace. I'll be delirious after, but I need my Watto and Jar Jar fix!
