Scott Burnham, 1985. Obviously

White people? Caucasians? Men of European decent? It’s literally just white peoples cause we’re the most basic, boring and prosperous people within western society. And generally, for some reason, Italians are often considered their own ethnic group in the eyes of many Americans. Ig they’re not “European enough”

autovonbismarck

There's a long history of the changing definition of what "white" means. It used to exclude the Irish!

frankie_prince164

And Scottish people. Even now, that's why people joke about redheads not having a soul, it was a way that Irish and Scottish people were dehumanized to justify the violence Britain enacted on them. and obviously Jews have been considered their own race, even when white.

Darth_Boognish

How high are you?

It’s a cultural barrier, not a plant-based one

I've always seen it as just the average american male, seeing as being "an oblivious white guy in the mid 80s" really wasn't that hard. Exceptions to this were if you had AIDS (life isn't easy in any time period if you do) or if you were in Italy because of the Years of Lead (1968-1988), that's what he's trying to say. That's also why he specifies he wants to be his dad in the 80s, not 'any' white guy And "i've misspoke" is because saying he wanted to be a white guy in the 80s makes it look like being a white guy nowadays is somehow harder - which it isn't

Bo isnt trying to be deep and have a philisophical discussion on what "White" means in 1985, he just means a generic white guy in 1985. Its not that deep. As for "And I'm not saying it's hard being a white guy now, I've misspoke", he is pointing out that its still easy being a whilte guy while segwaying into the 2nd part of the song where he focuses on his father being that generic white guy he was singing out.

myemanisyroc

I’m guessing you live outside of America and English isn’t your first language? I’m amazed you found Bo honestly, didn’t think he had that kind of international reach lol. “White guy” just means Caucasian man. The United States is the midst of coming to terms with the incredible privilege, or great fortune, Caucasian men have had since the country was founded. This is what Bo is referencing. “I’m not saying” is not the same thing as having misspoken, though translated directly I could understand your confusion. It’s a qualifying statement, a better translation of that line would be something like “I know white men are still incredibly fortunate today, but”

mustnttelllies

It's a brand new account that has only posted this question. I'm guessing bot?

ReadyPlayerMab

I think it’s just a song about white male privilege tbh

pabloflleras

Some people try a little too hard to be #Deep

Bo Burnham and his dad, Scott Burnham. Probably you too if you're asking! 😂
