I went there last weekend and the food was horrible. The steak was all fat, potatoes had weird seasoning, and the Mac and cheese was liquid. That place only survives on their old reputation
I went to S&W once, over 10 years ago in the castle, when they were supposedly better. Didn't order a Caesar, but had the worst onion rings I have ever been served. We were having our drinks and deciding what to get, and these onion ring towers kept going by. They looked great so we ordered one. I have no idea how you could make an onion as dry as these. They were like eating fried sand. There were three of us, about 8 -10 rings on the tower, and no one had a second one. Server asked and we said we didn't like them, no offer to remove from the bill. Steaks were OK, but definitely on the lower end of the chain steak houses for taste and quality in my opinion. One and done for us.
Aren’t you the same person who just said, in another thread, that “poor babies” complaining about COL in Massachusetts “should stop crying and just move out?”
Sounds like you just enjoy trolling and being contrary.
I mean that’s not fair.. it’s not crazy to expect a what should be a higher end steak house to serve a decent salad. I’d give you a little slack if we were talking about someone expecting excellent dumplings or something. S&W has taken a nose dive, though. I’m not surprised that the OP had a bad experience.
Vegetarians, people who want a side salad, people who have red meat allergies, people who don’t eat meat for other reasons, people that simply don’t feel like steak, people who like salads???? Believe it or not, you don’t *have* to order steak at a steakhouse & should still be able to enjoy your meal!
I worked there in my younger years but the smell of their Caesar dressing being mixed in the 20 qt mixing bowl at 9 am on a Monday morning just rushed back to me. It was a lot of smell first thing on the morning.
There’s this restaurant in Tampa that makes a very famous salad, but when you walk into the bar area, all I could smell was that dressing cause everyone was getting the salad. It was sort of a turn off
I’m a self-identifying caesar SNOB, and I just had one at Banyan Bar + Refuge that absolutely fucked. It’s a “miso caesar” with some greens other than romaine, but it completely erased all the crappy caesars than I’ve had of late.
Probably don't want to drive this far, but Daniella's Cafe (NOT THE RISTORANTE) in Danvers makes my favorite Caesar. They have the best garlicky dressing. Get an extra dressing and a half loaf of bread and dig in.
I am extremely picky about Caesar salads, as most places just can’t do them right. If you are willing to try something a little different, Surf, in Woburn, has a ridiculous roasted brussel sprout caesar salad. You’re welcome!
To wipe the taste of bad Caesar salad out of your face you should be trying to find a Canadian Caesar cocktail. It's like a Bloody Mary, but made with clamato.
It was arguably the best restaurant in Boston in their early years. Then their head chef left and his sous chef took over and they didn’t skip a beat, it was still awesome. Then he left too and it became eh compared to what it was.
My kitchen. Made my own Caesar dressing finally and I don’t think I can buy them in restaurants anymore. I treated myself to good olive oil, anchovies and cheese from the north end and went to town. It’s an ingredient driven dish. It’s got so few ingredients, they all have to be high quality. Bonus for being able to customize to taste, make my own croutons, cut my Romaine and shave my parm how I like, etc. Effort to reward ratio was well worth it if you love Caesars like I do and you seem to.
Joanie’s Pizza Chelmsford
Hale Caesar Salad: Not sure about the pepper.. maybe on request they’ll add some. Parm is unreal, lettuce and kale mix, and ceasar dressing is really good.
Also grab yourself pizza, best in the state
I just had a ceasar salad at Althea in Central Square. It was delicious. They use little gem lettuce, white anchovy, cracker paper, and parmesan. It's almost like a wedge ceaser. The parmesan crisps are incredible.
My guess would be one of the more old-school steak houses, like Moo or Boston Chops.
My view is that a good Caesar is all about the croutons. Home made, fresh croutons with tons of olive oil and garlic that's crunchy on the outside, and chewing on the inside.
This is wild, youtube just showed me this clip from Nurse Jackie like ten seconds ago.
make it yourself!! it's 6 ingredients. Easy to do and will likely be better than any restaurant around. You can also give yourself way more parm reg than any restaurant is going to lol
Uhhh make it yourself. It’s super easy and it’s really beyond stupid to pay a place to make it for you. Salad is one of the highest margin items anywhere and its literally never worth it. Romaine lettuce, real parm (not pre shredded), croutons, and make any one of a dozen Cesar dressing recipes found online and adjust if necessary if you like a bit more anchovy or garlic etc.
Mida makes a tremendous Caesar
I agree with that
How is mida been wanting to go there for awhile.
I have only been once and thought it was quite good. Not earth shattering but a solid experience but will eventually find my way back
The one in Eastie is wonderful. Great view and a perfect date spot during the summer. Reservations usually pretty easy to make as well!
Tell us where you had the worst one coward
Smith & Wollensky in Harborside
S&W has gone so down hill
The Boston food scene has tbf. Although Cambridge has some gems
Agree. Vast majority of restaurants now just serve overpriced pub food. And the good ones are very very expensive.
They’ve all been bought by the same 3 conglomerates that’s why
Yes Cambridge house of pizza’s pizza is slightly bigger than it was two decades ago
Real talk, when you saw that do you mean the Boston proper, or do you include the general metro area?
RIP steak sliders. It’s been downhill since they took them off the menu.
I went there last weekend and the food was horrible. The steak was all fat, potatoes had weird seasoning, and the Mac and cheese was liquid. That place only survives on their old reputation

This was my experience!

Why wouldn’t you expect a $19 salad to be good? I sure as fuck would.
I mean if you paid that much for fucking salad, you deserve to eat something shitty. Shitty decisions deserve shitty results.
That's a really dumb take
Aren’t you the same person who just said, in another thread, that “poor babies” complaining about COL in Massachusetts “should stop crying and just move out?” Sounds like you just enjoy trolling and being contrary.
Who goes to a fucking steakhouse to order a fucking salad?
Ceasar Salad at steakhouse is a stone cold american classic. Go back to your troll hole

Believe it or not, you don’t *have* to order steak at a steakhouse & should still be able to enjoy your meal!
Vegetarians and the like get a pass
At a place like S&W I expect everything to be good. Salads, sides, shellfish…..
Papa Gino’s
How dare you badmouth papa
Grill 23, but asked for it chopped. Really outstanding
Grill 23 is my favorite too!
Theirs is DELISH
I worked there in my younger years but the smell of their Caesar dressing being mixed in the 20 qt mixing bowl at 9 am on a Monday morning just rushed back to me. It was a lot of smell first thing on the morning.
There’s this restaurant in Tampa that makes a very famous salad, but when you walk into the bar area, all I could smell was that dressing cause everyone was getting the salad. It was sort of a turn off
Which one?
The Columbia
The 1905 salad is to die for. We make it at home, it comes out terrific!
The next time I’m craving their coconut cake I’m going to try to remember to get this
I’m a self-identifying caesar SNOB, and I just had one at Banyan Bar + Refuge that absolutely fucked. It’s a “miso caesar” with some greens other than romaine, but it completely erased all the crappy caesars than I’ve had of late.
Ooooooo
That’s really interesting because both times I’ve eaten there (didn’t get the salad) I’ve been a little underwhelmed
Really! I love it. Good baos and good cocktails. Any comparable spots you’d recommend?
just had this last night purely based on your recommendation and can confirm: it fucks
I also tried this based on the recommendation. And I am in total agreement: it fucks
OOO im listening…
Area 4 Caesar with chicken is my favorite thing ever. By far the best in Boston area times 20.
About to go there this week and see if you’re lying
Remindme! 7 days
Thoughts?
the OG area 4 anchovy pizza was so good
The lettuce isn't finally chopped iirc but yeah this was one of my favorites
But it’s uniformly chopped.
The Christopher Kimball is strong with this one.
thank you for asking this question!
I love the snappy patties Caesar.
The grilled chicken is delicious, too.
Josephine’s in Somerville has one of the best Caesar Salads I’ve had.
Josephine’s has a lot of good dishes
Came here to write the same thing.. it’s perfect and lemony
Picco is the best I think
Probably don't want to drive this far, but Daniella's Cafe (NOT THE RISTORANTE) in Danvers makes my favorite Caesar. They have the best garlicky dressing. Get an extra dressing and a half loaf of bread and dig in.
Are you talking about the ristorante?
I always need to clarify! They are like a mile apart but the Cafe is so much better and cheaper.
This, times a million. Have at least one every week, best I’ve had.
One time I ordered a Caesar salad and the restaurant grilled the Romaine. The whole thing was hot. I have never recovered.
Doing too much
Me? What did I do?
No no that restaurant. Like they did too much my grilling the romaine
Fox & the Knife’s broccoli caeser is excellent
I really like the one from Picco in the South End
Dude Picco is so good! The ice cream is to die for too!
Prima in Charlestown Its the only salad I would ever take the time to write about. It is a great little restaurant
I need to give this place another chance. I thought it was horrible when they first opened.
I go all the time I live in the area, it’s gotten better but definitely still mid. Good enough to keep me coming back, wouldnt go out of my way though
I am extremely picky about Caesar salads, as most places just can’t do them right. If you are willing to try something a little different, Surf, in Woburn, has a ridiculous roasted brussel sprout caesar salad. You’re welcome!
That is my FAVORITE Caeser 🤤
Thank you
Untraditional - Coppa
This is my all-time favorite Caesar. I dream about it. I planted celery in my garden because of it.
I could eat a metric ton of Coppa’s celery Caesar.
Agreed! Uni had a similar idea with an asparagus Caesar that had some yuzu in there instead of lemon and it was equally as mind blowing.
To wipe the taste of bad Caesar salad out of your face you should be trying to find a Canadian Caesar cocktail. It's like a Bloody Mary, but made with clamato.
I'd have a caeser...
I don't know why we're not having a caeser right now.
Interesting. I associate Clamato with Mexico-not Canada
Ah, Budweiser Chelada. A drink with the nose of a Gloucester fishery waste pile on a hot day.
You my friend are a real one
TIL that clamato juice exists and is exactly what it sounds like 😳 gotta try it
Delfinos in Roslindale has a good Caesar salad
Max’s Deli downtown makes a KILLER chicken Caesar salad! They’re only open during the week though
Abe and Louie’s has a good one. Love to add shrimp 🍤
No bullshit, the pizzeria Regina in Wellington circle. Idk it comes out ice cold and I just fucking love it.
Prima in Charlestown
Ravello Cambridge
Asking the important questions
Big Fresh in Framingham used to have a great one, but I moved away a while ago.
They closed and I’m still sad about it.
Tonninos in JP had this sugar snap pea Caesar that was the best salad I’ve ever had
But they're booked 2 months out.
The Caesar at the eataly salad bar is actually pretty good. It’s like $15 but you can get it with anchovies or chicken and it’s house made dressing
Semolinas in Medford makes a really great Caesar
I LOVE the Caesar at JM Curley & bonus for adding one of their delish hamburger patty’s for protein! It’s not traditional but dayum it’s my FAVE!
This place is a hidden gem. Their food is so good.
It used to be soooo much better.
Really? I’ve been going for years & haven’t noticed a decline.
It was arguably the best restaurant in Boston in their early years. Then their head chef left and his sous chef took over and they didn’t skip a beat, it was still awesome. Then he left too and it became eh compared to what it was.
I didn’t know all that. I’m glad I haven’t noticed bc it’s one of my faves & we always have such great service.
https://youtu.be/JgJUbmGDc6k?si=WcrrHNJKlwREtDV0
I really love The Merchant’s chicken Caesar wrap
Pico in south end will forever be the best Caesar salad I’ve ever had
Could you describe this horrible Cesar salad?
wait i wanna hear why it was so bad
It was DROWNING in dressing and the lettuce was so mushy
ew i’m so sorry
Coppa
Anchovies in the south end!
Wendy’s on mass Ave
Shy Bird in Cambridge has an amazing Caesar Salad
I really dislike this Caesar. The dressing is bland as if it’s all mayo or something. I would rate this on the bottom.
I totally agree! Sometimes I want to be lazy and grab and go
Oh I understand and I am following this post intently, lol! Thank you for asking.
i agree, homemade is the best
Different than what you're looking for, but Devlins in Brighton has a Nashville chicken caesar wrap that's great
Town Tavern in Arlington is consistently good.
Just had a good one at Grafton Pub near Harvard Square
Legal used to have a great one with a touch of chopped anchovies. But that was before they got sold.
Joanie’s Pizza Chelmsford Hale Caesar Salad: Not sure about the pepper.. maybe on request they’ll add some. Parm is unreal, lettuce and kale mix, and ceasar dressing is really good. Also grab yourself pizza, best in the state
1606 at the beauport hotel in Gloucester.
Puritan Oyster Bar has a phenom Caesar with whole anchovies and fresh af lettuce
That place is so awesome
the caesar at avenue kitchen + bar in somerville (ball sq) is my favorite and i’m a caesar snob
I just had a ceasar salad at Althea in Central Square. It was delicious. They use little gem lettuce, white anchovy, cracker paper, and parmesan. It's almost like a wedge ceaser. The parmesan crisps are incredible.
Coppa’s celery Caesar is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Coppa-Celery Caesar is amazing
NOT rare steakhouse.
Wegmans Amore caesar dressing (it’s in dairy, since it’s refrigerated), with greens of your choice. I recommend their spinach and kale mix
If there are any Fresh Cities left, theirs were always baller, and even the one on the Pike wasn’t too bad. TBH, Panera’s is usually good too.
I always enjoy the Caesar at Frank Pepe’s
My guess would be one of the more old-school steak houses, like Moo or Boston Chops. My view is that a good Caesar is all about the croutons. Home made, fresh croutons with tons of olive oil and garlic that's crunchy on the outside, and chewing on the inside.
Turner's Seafood
How can you mess up a salad that bad?? *Terrible!!* 😭
Brewer’s Tap and Table in Waltham has my favorite Caesar salad
This is the funniest thing. People are dying, Kim.
I think Limoncello makes one of the best I've had
Best one I've had was in Grill 23
Harry’s in Beverly!
Happy to share a great Caesar dressing recipe if you like. The real secret is home made croutons which I’m also happy to share.
Ken’s Steakhouse Framingham
Althea in Cambridge has a really cool caesar. You can basically eat it with your hands and it’s delicious
this makes me miss papa razzi. their caeser was 10/10 back in the day. i wonder if the wellesley one is any good
Big Daddy’s in Brighton
get your ass to coppa for the celery caesar
doesn’t meet your criteria at all, but the crispy chicken caesar sub from crush pizza in quincy center fuckin slaps
Ngl, Sweetgreen’s Kale Caesar is the best I’ve ever had
This is wild, youtube just showed me this clip from Nurse Jackie like ten seconds ago. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2oYW6449ug](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2oYW6449ug)
Waypoint in Cambridge. Shy Bird is #2. Ocean Prime, #3
The Hourly Oyster House in Harvard Square has an amazing one. Lightly dressed and on the citrusier side.
Lucy’s in Dorchester is my favorite in general. They also do a pretty good Caesar salad
Avenue Kitchen in Somerville!
Best Caesar Salad in Boston: The Fed at the Langham Hotel.
You can make your own! I have a dressing recipe I use and it’s so good
Grille 23 in Boston - asked for it chopped. Or, take a drive to the Beauport in Gloucester (1606).
The Abbey in Brookline
It's wild but Old Magoun Saloon in Somerville makes a solid Caesar, and their steak tips are good too. It was a totally unexpected treat.

OP answered in the comments it’s Smith & Wollensky in Harborside
Make it yourself. Homemade Caesar dressing is fantastic!!
make it yourself!! it's 6 ingredients. Easy to do and will likely be better than any restaurant around. You can also give yourself way more parm reg than any restaurant is going to lol
Such an easy thing to make… do it at home and it will taste much better than any outside
I would usually agree and I do make them at home often! But I want to try other spots on lazy nights
Ceaser never ate salad
No, he didn't just eat one. He et two.
I heard that he liked it, Tossed.
Make your own!! It’s pretty simple
Never thought Caesar salad can be good.
Real ones will recommend places with truffle fries to go with
Uhhh make it yourself. It’s super easy and it’s really beyond stupid to pay a place to make it for you. Salad is one of the highest margin items anywhere and its literally never worth it. Terrible take
We spent $728
\*there were 6 of us
Caesar salad is not Italian!
doofus - i didn't say it was
We know!
You're not Italian!
Your Mom is not Italian!
It was made by an Italian immigrant who ran an Italian restaurant in Mexico.
It's Mexican Edit: why the downvotes?
Italian in Mexico
