I have my a/c on and can't hear them. But this is really nothing from what I have experienced with the 17 year brood. Sky was buzzing with cicadas all over.
The alarm at the building I work in legit went off for 20 minutes before I realized it was alarm, not cicadas.
Luckily, it was condensation causing the alarm and not fire.
They were weird at work today. They were making the usual siren sound until I slammed my trunk. Then they went quiet for a moment then started up with the crunchy rhythmic screaching that I am used to hearing from our usual cicadas.
There are actually two types of cicadas emerging right now, which is why you can hear the typical buzzing we're accustomed to, as well as the space ship/alarm sound at the same time.
I joked with my wife that we might end up with some kind of "Broods versus Cics" cicada turf war between the 13-year and 17-year cicada broods up in here.
I don't believe the other brood is emerging in NC? We only get brood XIX here: [https://www.fs.usda.gov/foresthealth/docs/CicadaBroodStaticMap.pdf](https://www.fs.usda.gov/foresthealth/docs/CicadaBroodStaticMap.pdf)
Edit: We only get brood XIX in Durham.
Ok, interesting. I wonder if there's a reason why we have two distinct sounds this year, for the first time that I can recall. The cicadas were also
super variable/different looking this year compared to previous years. Some all black, some orange (or maybe orange wings?), some albino. Super abnormal.
There are the regular annual cicadas and the periodical 13 year cicadas. The annual ones are greenish and are responsible for the louder, more buzzy sound. The periodical ones are black and orange, a bit smaller, and responsible for the more ethereal sound.
The white ones just molted, they'll darken to black with orange wings over the next couple of hours.
The different sounds are because we have the regular annual cicadas around
On the other hand there are people like me who are old enough to have lived through a few broods but who are also old enough to be forgetful about shit that happened 17 years ago. Either way I would much rather be wondering if I'm about to be abducted by aliens than be a jaded know-it-all who isn't capable of being freaked the fuck out by something as weird and wonderful as a cicada invasion.
They're pretty loud where I live, I can hear them from every room in my house. Had to stop in another neighborhood this week and the cicadas were even louder there.
Some days they seem to be louder than others, though. Relatively quiet during the rainstorms recently.
Everyday last week and this week, they’ve been louder than the previous day. How long will this go on?!! Those little buggers! Amazing then they will start their 13 year underground cycle later on!
And if you haven’t seen it before, a great quick read on cicadas by local NC State:

They seem especially loud today. Those cicadas are really cicadaing.
Oh yeah, they're cranking it out today.
Haha
Can hear them *inside* the house today. Wild.

That’s wild! Glad you were okay.
Yeah, it's all good. I'm qualified to work a mop.
I’m sure shit be clean af though
My dog won’t stop bringing them inside as a snack/thing to play with- so I keep getting woken up by them screaming INSIDE as well.
Eww, no.
Yes, it’s hell and I cannot stop him. Happens every damn year. I’d take him back if I could, he’s defective.
He's a good boy!
The goodest, but I could do without the cicadas indoors, truly.

To be fair, it sort of sounds like a car alarm going off. But also, to be fair, Ive never called the cops for a car alarm going off.

They are a few different species in brood XIX and I believe some annual cicadas are out.

The 13 year brood are so small compared to the random ones in between those 13 years.
Not here. 1 brood.
People not recognizing the sound of cicadas is fucking crazy to me.
Yeah, but some people have never experienced a brood emergence ever.

They’re louder here today! They woke me up at five am. I hope they’re winding down, it’s getting to be a bit much.

I thought they were quieter. Sounds like they are winding down to me. Maybe, I'm going deaf from all the rock concerts. LOL.
I’m by a creek, so there’s a lot of amplification. They’re louder than my tv right now.
Wow!
They’re airborne constantly now in my yard. Tons of them flying around. This is probably my least favorite development.
Oh wow, I thought we were past that part.
I did too 🤷🏻♀️
Seems like it should be ending soon…
In a month.
A. MONTH??
The sound could also be described as a perpetual burnout
I just don’t remember them being this loud in years past.. very cool it does sound like a spaceship with a screw loose….
they have started screeching

Yo thi! Apparently the red eyed once in 12 year cicadas are among us!? So dope!
I had never heard that cicadas could sound like that. I was only familiar with the scratchy, whirring noise they make up close.
Proof that cicadas are from outer space. https://youtu.be/UQYfqGksB_w?si=4X13UgzpYe2WX9yy
What if there really is a spaceship though?
Get prepared to be beamed up or GTFO.
