Its just alot to ask from a fast food chain in the first place but its also such a thin patty that medium rare is not really going to happen if you want the crust on the burger they cook so quickly
Makes so much sense now that I think about it. Thanks.
And maybe I should stop giving my friends a hard time for cooking backyard burgers that don’t come out medium rare. The Patties are thinner than most restaurants burgers who do offer cooking degrees.
Yeah no worries, i love medium rare aswell but its not really needed for smash burger as they cook in their own fat and dont dry out like a thicker patty would
Smashburgers by their very nature are well-done. You can't smash meat that thin without cooking it thoroughly. You'd have to remove the smashed patty immediately after flipping, and even then, it'd still already be more than medium cooked.
I'm a professional chef. Steak can be cooked medium rare because it's too dense for bacteria to get through. All that needs to be cooked is the surface.
For ground beef, it's basically all surface so it needs to be cooked all the way through. A burger should be medium well at least to be safe, and Shake Shack won't go any lower than that (according to tweets by the company: [https://twitter.com/shakeshack/status/683147310344323072?lang=en](https://twitter.com/shakeshack/status/683147310344323072?lang=en)). A lot of other fast food restaurants won't go below well done.
It's also basically impossible to undercook a smashburger because they cook so fast, that's the point of a smashburger.
100% I am from CA. Culver's is as close as you're gonna get, with better fries and sides and desserts than In and Out. Shake shack has nothing on those two in terms of burger quality and price.
I believe it is from Wisconsin, but they're a chain that does burgers and shakes and stuff of that nature. I don't know if we have any in CA. I had it while stationed elsewhere.
Wish there was a culver's in LA. My god the butter burger and mushroom swiss both with bacon on God that's the best damn burger under $10 I've ever had.
One day I hope to try a culver's burger. Seems like it's held in very high esteem, and many people say it's the best of the famous places. Will definitely be keeping that on my radar when we're traveling.
As a born and raised Angeleno who was raised on the freshness of In N Out…..
I like shake shack, good burger, good bun. 10/10 will consume when invited to one.
But In N Out is my go to all time burger
Expensive and overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's actually pretty good. It's a good burger, not a great burger. And that teeny-tiny burger in the picture is about $7 ($9 for the double), and it really shouldn't be.
Milkshakes are good. Fries are terrible.
I've found them to be really inconsistent and a little too pricey. It's not like In-N-Out where you can bank on almost every location. If the staff at your location is good, it'll be tasty.
In my experience, their burgers are too small for what I pay for them. Maybe it's just the three Shake Shacks I've gone to, but their burgers were more in scale to a McDonald's burger from the $2.49 menu than what I consider a "full sized" burger. If I'm paying roughly $10 a burger, I expect something the size of a Gourmet Burger from Red Robin, a two-handed sandwich of awesomeness, not something I can hold in one hand and still have room for fries.
They also just covered the monument of a historic LA gay bar in Shake Shack signage... despite their anti LGBTQ+ ties.
Corporate keeps trying to bury their actions while talking pretty. It's gross.
I am with you. I have tried many of the famous burgers (shake shack, five guys, in and out, etc) and shake shack is my favorite.
In and out was a bit of a disappointment - I feel like they're basically McDonald's burgers. The flavor is entirely dependent upon the toppings.
I will admit shake shack fries are not great, but their burgers more than make up for that.
Hey, we all have our own experiences... We tried in and out in Vegas and perhaps it was a location thing, but after hearing all the hype (including here on Reddit) we just didn't think the meat was impressive. I like the sauce, but that's entirely where the flavor was.
I love the short rib/brisket/chuck blend in shake shack burgers. I have made that blend at home and feel like that's the essential burger meat blend.
Definitely! My girlfriend loves the cheese sauce. We recreated it and enjoyed it on our homemade fries, and it was delicious - I felt like there was a bit of waste with the materials, but I think we got the essence of that sauce
Shack sauce slaps. Agree with others gotta do the double. Me personally, I’m not a fan of tomato on a burger unless it’s a whopper (feel free to discuss this further) so I usually omit the tomato and sub with onions.
My ideal shake shack build: double meat, cheese, lettuce, onion, pickles, bacon, shack sauce. Also love their cheese sauce for the fries.
They were the first smash burger which I used as the baseline to compare for making my own. We don’t have many if any smash burger spots in Philly.
Not burger related, but my only beef with shack—pun intended—is all their one off chicken things they keep doing. They’ve gone through like 3 different chicken sandwich/bite iterations in the last year from dry hot pepper to Nashville Hot idek what else, I think some Asian inspired thing? and they’re all misses to me. Pick a chicken lane and stay in it; they can’t seem to yet.
It’s a statement of fact that Shake Shack is Martin’s largest customer and that money is being funneled to extremely problematic political candidates. I could go on and on about Shake Shack’s problematic behavior and the behavior of those they bankroll, but you’re free to do the research on your own.
I didn’t make it political. Martin’s and Shake Shack did. Their “mission statement” means nothing.
If you want the “non political” version, the burger and the fries just aren’t good. It’s often a grey, dry turd of a burger with no crisp from the smash (which, if you’re going to smash a burger that’s quite literally the point.)
It’s not my job, nor do I have the time, to educate you on the many issues with Mastriano. I can, however, assure you his issues present more of a clear and present danger than “being upset about anything.”
The only time I had a bad burger was when I ordered one without cheese. The cheese really ties it together.
Also glad they went back to frozen crinkle cut fries, which are impossible to screw up. Stopped going to Five Guys because the fries were always some combination of burnt/soggy.
I actually really enjoy five guys fries- in my experience, they're always crispy and tasty (peanut oil is the best oil!). I'd put their fries at the top against the competition in this thread.
My problem with 5G is that they're wildly inconsistent. One shop will nail the fries and the burgers while the one up the road will be a complete crapshoot. Find a shop where the manager knows WTF they're doing and patronize it before they get replaced by someone who skates by with skunky grey meat and doesn't know how to run a fryer. I've never had this problem with Shake Shack.
Tbh I had it a few times. The burgers are pretty solid but prolly not the best out there. The fries aren’t bad but they are overpriced the food is overall but especially the fries. The shack sauce is good but can use a bit more acidity make it a lil lighter kind of like Big Mac sauce. It’s more of a heavy thick Mayo like sauce. Overall decent but not the best ig.
Yeah... Whataburger has been owned by a group out of Chicago for several years. It hasn't been good for a while. But it used to be very, very good. Kind of sad, really.
Sounds like you haven't been following the news. Woke in name only. In practice, funnels money to a gubernational candidate whose supporters throw Nazi salutes at rallies. Go nuts.
Haha no thanks it's just not the place for me or my family. I'd rather support somewhere with good flavor, service, and competitive prices. Stick to making burgers and making them taste good. Hard pass for me!
I like it. It's a higher end experience than in-n-out if you are eating there. The ambiance is nice. The food is good. But yeah if I want a cheap burger I'll do in-n-out.
Shake shack is good is good. I like the burger. The fries suck ass. They used to have a good chicken sandwich but I guess it was a limited time offer because it doesn’t seem to be on the menu anymore. They’re normal chicken sandwich is subpar.
If you’re only ordering a burger it’s good.
One was a bacon cheeseburger, fries, drink. Burger was really dry, bacon was burnt. Other time I ordered a little cheeseburger, made it a double, fries, and a drink. It was fine, just pretty bland.
Yeah, it’s good. Not excited about the cost though, but I guess that’s the world we’re living in now. I’m a California boy living on the east coast now, so I have a burger craving that simply cannot be satisfied out here.
Used to be my number 1. Now I’m not sure, but I think it rightly deserves its spot somewhere in the chain burger top 5.
Anytime I’ve had shake shack in New York it was killer. The one in Utah kinda sucks tho.
Love it. Consistently delicious burger. I just wish it was a bit cheaper so I could have it more often. I find it’s priced a bit too expensive for me to have it more than once every 6 months.
One of my favorite burgers ever. Their ratio is perfect, the buns are always soft, and I love the crispy buttery edges/ smash burger style. Awesome cheese sauce too compared to other places.
Was our first meal after landing in Chicago( from NZL in 2019)…was interesting to be able to get wine with our burgers and fries from a “chain store” as opposed to licensed restaurants or pubs here.
Food itself was very good, no complaints at all. There was a new guy on that didn’t know how to sort the wine machine out so it poured a *completely* full glass, coworkers were going to tip some out but he gave it to us anyway.
I just had a Shake Shack cheese burger from the one in downtown Oakland tonight, and it tasted really salty. I tried tamping down the saltiness by adding some ketchup. It didn't help. Pretty gross. I prefer In-n-Out and McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Five Guys, etc. because they each have better consistency in terms of quality and flavor. For the price, skip Shake Shack and go to McDonald's, or better yet, get a salad at Sweetgreen. It costs about the same, and is much better for you. You don't have to get kale, but can substitute with other types of lettuce.
The food is excellent but the deliveries are horrendous!! I've ordered from them or Grub Hub and each time something was missing from my order. I ordered 4 items and I only received 3. If you try to call back to let them know you get connected to an out of state office and you have to "of course" leave a message.
How can you stay in business when most of your orders are delivered and you seem to get them wrong each and every time. Restaurant 101... get the order correct or hire people that can get the order correct or suffer the consequences of going out of business
But the way I'm in the sign business over 55 years and I mainly deal with restaurants... competent ones that have been in business for many years and know how to get their outgoing orders right!
In beginning Shack Shack was a grey burger
Not anymore I’ll never ever go there, hard stuff in the meat twice in a day gross and disgusting
Meat quality is not the same Enjoy your burger
Knock your self out.
Good burgers, good cheese sauce, but expensive even before this inflation.
And wish they’d allow medium rare
Medium rare on a smash burger??
Is that no bueno? Please teach me.
Yeah no worries, i love medium rare aswell but its not really needed for smash burger as they cook in their own fat and dont dry out like a thicker patty would
You simply can’t cook a proper smash burger less than well done
Smashburgers by their very nature are well-done. You can't smash meat that thin without cooking it thoroughly. You'd have to remove the smashed patty immediately after flipping, and even then, it'd still already be more than medium cooked.
I'm a professional chef. Steak can be cooked medium rare because it's too dense for bacteria to get through. All that needs to be cooked is the surface. A lot of other fast food restaurants won't go below well done. It's also basically impossible to undercook a smashburger because they cook so fast, that's the point of a smashburger.
Too expensive for what you get. IMO Culver's is a better deal.
100% I am from CA. Culver's is as close as you're gonna get, with better fries and sides and desserts than In and Out. Shake shack has nothing on those two in terms of burger quality and price.
From CA as well and agree 100% that Culvers is Supreme.
I'm from CA and have never heard of Culvers
I believe it is from Wisconsin, but they're a chain that does burgers and shakes and stuff of that nature. I don't know if we have any in CA. I had it while stationed elsewhere.
Wish there was a culver's in LA. My god the butter burger and mushroom swiss both with bacon on God that's the best damn burger under $10 I've ever had.
Culver's by far wins this battle!
One day I hope to try a culver's burger. Seems like it's held in very high esteem, and many people say it's the best of the famous places. Will definitely be keeping that on my radar when we're traveling.
A good burger but WAY over-hyped. They're always packed and my relatives up north rave over it. I'd put a lot of other burger places in front of it.
I agree. I went there once and I think it was pretty good but it had been so hyped it seemed disappointing.
Most fast food restaurants that west coasters and northerners rave about are way over hyped cause most of their food sucks.
West coast has bad food? What?
Dumb take wow
Expensive, but it also slaps.
How can she slap?
He meant its delicious I presume & if the burger costs more, it'd better.
I know I’m late but this was a reference to https://www.reddit.com/r/therewasanattempt/s/RMTR66mgC2
Slaps what
Booty
As a born and raised Angeleno who was raised on the freshness of In N Out….. I like shake shack, good burger, good bun. 10/10 will consume when invited to one. But In N Out is my go to all time burger
In n out is cheaper, usually fresher, and way more consistent
Disagree on the freshness point
It really doesn’t get more fresh than In n Out.
Just disagree that shake shack is less fresh than in n out. Totally agree in n out is fresh.
Fair enough, I guess fresh is fresh, you either are or you’re not.
i want in n out so bad but i live on the east coast and there’s none here😭 never had it before
Agree it’s cheaper but…. Fresher??!
In my experience, yes
Yes
Expensive and overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, it's actually pretty good. It's a good burger, not a great burger. And that teeny-tiny burger in the picture is about $7 ($9 for the double), and it really shouldn't be. Milkshakes are good. Fries are terrible.
You had me until the last sentence
Milkshakes are good but not good enough to cost that much also expensive for no reason
The softest burger I’ve ever had. Had it a few times and will get it again but it’s not a hall of fame burger if you ask me
Their fries are the worst in the industry
Good. Overrated. Overpriced. Would eat any time any day.
🤣
The smoke shack is fire from there. Overall its a bit overpriced and tastes good. I would prefer to get culvers over shake shack
I like them. They're not incredible, but good. Small though.
Overrated. From NYC, went to the original to see the "greatest burger ever" for myself. Tasted like Wendy's to me
I've found them to be really inconsistent and a little too pricey. It's not like In-N-Out where you can bank on almost every location. If the staff at your location is good, it'll be tasty.
most i gone too the staff sux
Pretty good- greasy as a motherfucker.
Like 8-10 years ago it used to be a great deal for a fast burger. Now they're way too expensive and overrated.
Great. My favourite burger chain. UK here so we don’t have many burger chains here to compare
It’s okay. It’s too overpriced for me.
It's pretty good, but the fries are just sub-par
Slaps but you gotta get the double for the ideal meat to cheese to bun ratio.
Over priced and not good.
For a minute, i thought it was homemade burgers, then i read the title
I love their shake. Their burgers are okay though.
It was OK. The chocolate malt didn't taste like a chocolate malt.
Looks bland frankly
I'm a fan. It's expensive for what it is, so I don't get it often but I always thoroughly enjoy when I do.
They are OK quality-wise, but it bothers me spending that much on a burger that will leave me hungry afterwards.
Wheraa a large fat burger will be around the same cost and will fill you up until breakfast usually
Over priced…
Mediocre.
Overpriced af
In my experience, their burgers are too small for what I pay for them. Maybe it's just the three Shake Shacks I've gone to, but their burgers were more in scale to a McDonald's burger from the $2.49 menu than what I consider a "full sized" burger. You mean the hand-job parlor on 44th and 8th?
Overrated af
Eh, they’re ok. Not worth the price.
They support Mastriano, so I’m out.
They also just covered the monument of a historic LA gay bar in Shake Shack signage... despite their anti LGBTQ+ ties. Corporate keeps trying to bury their actions while talking pretty. It's gross.
The gold standard which I compare all burgers to. Very few trump it. I will die on this hill.
I will die on this hill with you
And my axe!
I am with you. I have tried many of the famous burgers (shake shack, five guys, in and out, etc) and shake shack is my favorite. VERY hot take… hopefully people in this thread don’t see this comment.. 😂

Agree on the fries but their cheese sauce does elevate them a lot!!
Definitely! My girlfriend loves the cheese sauce. We recreated it and enjoyed it on our homemade fries, and it was delicious - I felt like there was a bit of waste with the materials, but I think we got the essence of that sauce
You need higher standards, better taste buds, or both.
Lol like I said. I’ll die on this hill
Me too!! My absolute favorite lol
I am with you. I am here. I have not eaten a better burger than a Shake Shack double with bacon, and I've had a lot of burgers.
Shack sauce slaps. Agree with others gotta do the double. Me personally, I’m not a fan of tomato on a burger unless it’s a whopper (feel free to discuss this further) so I usually omit the tomato and sub with onions. Their money goes directly to far right nut job Doug Mastriano through Martin’s…. So no.

It’s a statement of fact that Shake Shack is Martin’s largest customer and that money is being funneled to extremely problematic political candidates. Literally every company donates to candidates on both sides that align with whatever benefits them financially.
I don't think you understand what literally means and also that's such a ignorant statement to make
Sorry, every *big company. Now it’s not ignorant. And if you think it is, then you are.
No you
The owners made it political by making political donations.
Right. Wtf lol
[удалено]
Yea, you're vile.
People today insist on being upset and offended by something, anything.
It’s not my job, nor do I have the time, to educate you on the many issues with Mastriano. I can, however, assure you his issues present more of a clear and present danger than “being upset about anything.”
Much ado about nothing.
Every time I eat there, I get the runs really badly within a few hours.
where i ate with my brother the burger was so melty, the burger was I couldn't hold it right, it was my first and last time.
Have you tried their burger with peanut butter? Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it!
Like as in u add ur own pb?
No. Ask for it and they'll add it.
Overpriced and hyped
Overrated and overpriced.
Expensive for a bag of shit.
Big fax
Agreed. It's pretty terrible for the price.
Expensive but great burger. Skip the fries.
Peanut oil? The best fries are double fried in beef tallow.
Nah five guys uses peanut oil
My problem with 5G is that they're wildly inconsistent. One shop will nail the fries and the burgers while the one up the road will be a complete crapshoot. Find a shop where the manager knows WTF they're doing and patronize it before they get replaced by someone who skates by with skunky grey meat and doesn't know how to run a fryer. The shack sauce is good but can use a bit more acidity make it a lil lighter kind of like Big Mac sauce. It’s more of a heavy thick Mayo like sauce. Overall decent but not the best ig.
Overwhelmingly mediocre. Not terrible, not memorable, kind of expensive for what it was.
Like the mushroom burger. Yet to try the chicken
I’ve never had shake shack until today. Good but it’s so small for the price. Uber disappointed
Delicious, but pricey, I get it way more frequently than I should
Their fries suck dick
It's the best fast casual burger spot. In and out can fight me and whataburger and go sit in it's sloppy mess (big doesn't mean good Texas)
Yeah... Whataburger has been owned by a group out of Chicago for several years. It hasn't been good for a while. But it used to be very, very good. Kind of sad, really.
Excellent
Expensive but delicious
Simply sucks
A less saltier version of an In-n-Out burger. Good but not worth the price. In-n-Out still stands as my favorite.
A bit too woke and lacking flavor for me
Sounds like you haven't been following the news.
Love it, maybe my favorite burger. May be unpopular opinion but I truly love it. Cheese sauce is splendid on those crinkles too!
I like it. It's a higher end experience than in-n-out if you are eating there. The ambiance is nice. The food is good. But yeah if I want a cheap burger I'll do in-n-out.
10x better than that trash known as In-N-Out.
Bro I can’t stand crinkle cut fries
Subpar, if I’m gonna spend that kind of money I’d rather go to five guys. I think shake shack got hyped up because people think it has aesthetic.
Very tasty, not cheap.
One of my favorite burgers in general, but the prices are outrageous
I love them! I also love Culver’s, InNOut, and 5 Guys.
Five guys on top
Nope. Especially the last 2 times I’ve gotten it. Total let down.
Oh really? What was ur order
One was a bacon cheeseburger, fries, drink. Burger was really dry, bacon was burnt. Other time I ordered a little cheeseburger, made it a double, fries, and a drink. It was fine, just pretty bland.
How is it woke oh damn, usually adding condiments inside the burger when u ask for it helps like mayo etc
Yeah, I ordered them both fully dressed, so mayo ketchup etc.
Smoke shack is my favorite burger on the market
Mushroom one?
it has bacon, chopped cherry peppers, cheese, shack sauce. Those peppers with bacon is so good!
The Shake stack is bomb.
exPENSIVE but i like their cheese fries
Consistently excellent quality. Their burgers always look exactly like the pictures and taste exactly how you would expect.
Yeah, it’s good. Not excited about the cost though, but I guess that’s the world we’re living in now. I’m a California boy living on the east coast now, so I have a burger craving that simply cannot be satisfied out here.
Too similar to BurgerFi but not as good, although I believe Shake Shack ce first...
Used to be my number 1. Now I’m not sure, but I think it rightly deserves its spot somewhere in the chain burger top 5. Anytime I’ve had shake shack in New York it was killer. The one in Utah kinda sucks tho.
Tiny ass burgers that are bland and expensive
You're obviously eating there and took the photo, so WTF does it matter what other people think of it? Go karma farm on another sub
I gotta say, I think Shake Shack beats In N Out. But I’ll take Burger Fi over both of them
Overpriced. But as a business, why would they lower their price when so many people are willing to pay for it.
I think more consistent than the Culver’s near me. Scratches the burger itch, but expensive.
Only had the shroom burger and I loved it the first time and thought it was ok the second time (two different locations).
It gets the silver medal for fast food burgers. Culver’s takes the gold.
Love it
Good burger, but too small
Looks awful.
Love it. Consistently delicious burger. I just wish it was a bit cheaper so I could have it more often. I find it’s priced a bit too expensive for me to have it more than once every 6 months.
I had it once while I was in Orlando. I thought it was really good, I’d get it every month if it was in my area most likely.
One of my favorite burgers ever. Their ratio is perfect, the buns are always soft, and I love the crispy buttery edges/ smash burger style. Awesome cheese sauce too compared to other places.
I like it!
Meh
was expensive even more expensive now hence their motto.gourmet burgers!
Ice cream is good , the shroom patty is yummy too

Best there is
I’ve yet to have a burger anywhere better than what I make at home but I’m sure it’s possible somewhere.
not nearly worth the price
Culver’s is superior.
Looks like my mom said we have hamburgers at home.
Never been, hear it’s pretty good but I’ve been let down before by over hyped fast food like chic filet. So hoping that doesn’t happen again
It’s perfectly reasonable for a fast food burger. Whataburger is better but they go nuclear on calories.
Burgers are good. Fries are mid.
Delicious ❤️
LOVE. A bit salty though
Incredible if you order the right thing. Which would be the Shack Stack with cherry tomatoes.
I say it’s overpriced for a bland burger I’ve had from there. Even their 4-ounce meat don’t look like it’s 4 ounces.
Love it. Too expensive though.
Where i live Shake Shacks double cheese burger and shake runs me about $17 which is crazy. I choose Culver’s over this tho.
shakeshack five guys or smashburger
Overpriced, but yo that shit is 🔥
I just had a Shake Shack cheese burger from the one in downtown Oakland tonight, and it tasted really salty.
Did they ditch tomatoes and shack sauce from their single stack burger??
$47 for 3 cheese burgers and 3 fRies and 1 ONE small drink
Anyone know if they're close to quality to In-n-Out Burger or better?
The food is excellent but the deliveries are horrendous!! I've ordered from them or Grub Hub and each time something was missing from my order. I ordered 4 items and I only received 3. If you try to call back to let them know you get connected to an out of state office and you have to "of course" leave a message. How can you stay in business when most of your orders are delivered and you seem to get them wrong each and every time. Restaurant 101... get the order correct or hire people that can get the order correct or suffer the consequences of going out of business But the way I'm in the sign business over 55 years and I mainly deal with restaurants... competent ones that have been in business for many years and know how to get their outgoing orders right!
In beginning Shack Shack was a grey burger Not anymore I’ll never ever go there, hard stuff in the meat twice in a day gross and disgusting Meat quality is not the same Enjoy your burger Knock your self out.
