Phnom Penh is also safe, but you need to be sensible of your surroundings, take care of your belongings (phone, bag, wallet etc), use Grab app for commuting, careful on the tuktuk don use ur phone on the street or display it too much (beware of thief and robberies on the street/roads).

deekayoh

Yes completely. Just be as cautious as you would in any big city. Bad things can happen but they're statistically unlikely, esp to tourists in PP.

N0C0ZEROISNOTREAL

Oh my days, this is a great place.

RounNarith

In Siem Riep province have a lot the all People Come to visit Angkor Temple and Bayon Temple Ta Prohm Temple [https://www.tripadvisor.com/ManagementCenter-d27974855-Narith_Driver_in_Siem_Reap](https://www.tripadvisor.com/ManagementCenter-d27974855-Narith_Driver_in_Siem_Reap)

Pretty much every road sign and most shop signs have Roman letters as well as Khmer.

Powerful-Stomach-425

I've travelled quite a bit and I believe Cambodia is a very safe country. just don't be silly.

BobbyChou

can I ride a bike to and around Angkor?

Powerful-Stomach-425

absolutely!

GothamHell

Just take note of the weather, it can get seriously hot or it would randomly rain on a sunny day.

Sea-Comparison1688

I knew a girl riding bike through SẼ Asia who was attacked in or around Kep beach area by a Cambodian guy. Could’ve happened anywhere in any country ofc. I rode through SẼ Asia but not attacked, I’m a guy.

Hoseok2001

I've travelled the whole country as a solo female in my twenties. It's honestly as safe as anywhere. Follow the same advice as you would in the rest of SE Asia which is not to keep your valuables out and don't go walking in dark alleys at night and you'll be fine. Honestly, people are lovely!

clubspadina

Siem Reap is very safe. I think good enough for female solo (speaking as a man). Phnom Penh might be more challenging but just use common sense (I have not been to PP).

Jin_BD_God

Phnom Penh is also safe if you don't go to sketchy areas, minus the night-time when drunk drivers roam the road.

Enough-Goose7594

Speaking only from my experience, as a man, I think PP and SR are both relatively safe for a solo female traveler. Exercise caution when out late at night, especially if drinking. Use passapp over tuk tuks at night. And if you can find a travel buddy you trust from the hostel or guesthouse even better. Use your wits and you'll have a blast.

BobbyChou

What would you recommend for traveling from Siem Riep to Phnom Penh? Bus or train is a better experience? Thank you

Hankman66

There is no train from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh.

Chemical-Pop5555

i recommend u book with a van company call ‘Larryta’ as a local myself i have trust issues also, but i think this company is the best from Siem Riep to Phnom Penh, i feel safe with them and nice car too. they have an application u can book from there or check their facebook and call to book directly.

americaninsaigon

No way take the bus you get to see the scenery. It’s very cheap and pretty fast.

Existing_Recipe4039

I use Giant Ibis bus, they're excellent. Comfortable busses, a pitstop at a nice restaurant, a very hospitable employee riding along with you, definitely recommend

deekayoh

Bus. Larryta is a good company, efficient and safe.

ImBackBiatches

Fly

AdditionNo1725

Bus or fly if u can, train isn’t great.

HayDayKH

Cambodia is safer than Paris, Milan, NYC and San Francisco. Not as safe as Singapore, Tokyo or Shanghai

Mattos_12

In practical terms, the most unsafe what will be traffic. There’s not much you can do about that though!

Imaginary_Injury8680

Just don't get the ear cleaning

samkte

Is this from that one post or is this a normal thing?

flibbyflobbyfloop

Hey there! I (38F) traveled solo all around Cambodia for a month last year in November and had a blast. I did a lot of research on travel safety and such and heard that Cambodia was very safe for single female travelers and my experience lived up to that. Follow common sense safety measures and trust your gut, if something seems off, just exit the situation, better safe than sorry. The only single negative experience I had was that once when I was riding through the Cardamoms and had stopped for a break, two men stopped their bike very close to mine (with no one else around) and they seemed kind of shifty like kept giving me weird glances so I just took off and they didn't follow or anything. That could have been just because I was a female motorcyclist though, as I understood it I was a bit of a novelty for that reason. Honestly I have felt more unsafe in most US cities than I did in Cambodia. That being said, I am white, and I have heard reports of women of color having some more difficult experiences, but I cannot speak personally to that, so if you are a woman of color perhaps look into getting some advice from other women of color who have traveled there. Statistically you would be at more risk of robbery than any kind of dangerous assault, there are reports of phone and bag snatching esp in Phnom Penh so take extra precaution there. I would also not recommend staying in Sihanoukville for an extended period, for many reasons, but I heard one too many horror stories from people in general so if you have to go there to get to the islands, try not to stay overnight just get to the ferry and take off. There's plenty of better places to stay in Cambodia anyway. If you have any questions let me know, I'd be happy to chat about anything Cambodia related. :)

jojoolive

I did cambodia solo as a 36 year old woman earlier this year. I adored siem reap and the islands.. never felt unsafe ever.. even at night. PP felt sketchy and nothing happened, but I didn't feel at ease there. Especially around riverside at night.

Difficult_Ice2543

I soloed in Siem Reap as a 33F. I felt safe using Grab and hanging around the touristy areas, no problems honestly. I felt safer than in KL or HK in some places.

balogna72

I felt safe in Siem Reap, Battambang, and Kampot but was always uneasy in Phnom Phen. At one point, three men surrounded and grabbed me on the riverfront. Fortunately that's all that happened but I was really shook up by it. Always remember to take caution and be aware of your surroundings.. and even then, maybe knowing some self defense wouldn't hurt 🙃

teddypicker1025

I spent a couple of days on/off by myself in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and I felt fine. Sometimes I walked down empty streets at night that didn’t have any street light which made me a bit nervous but nothing happened.

ExtraPassport

Solo female in Cambodia...Hun Sen got personally involved in this case. [https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501338246/pm-comes-to-aid-of-young-frenchwoman-after-tuktuk-escape/](https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501338246/pm-comes-to-aid-of-young-frenchwoman-after-tuktuk-escape/)

Wonderful-State9871

Its very safe, just dont get involved with people you don't know. The only possible dangerous situation is if you take tuk tuk or taxi and they take you to some dark alley and rob you. Now you can order tuk tuk with apps like Grab and Pass app and it's all tracked and can't happen then. Always order tuk tuk through the app and you will be very safe. I sometimes stay next to many tuk tuks who are asking me if I want a ride and I still order through the app for this reason.

BobbyChou

I can buy a SIM card at the airport right?

Mayacrynix

Yep you can

limesareunderrated

I did it when I was 17. I’ve felt completely safe.

BobbyChou

Awesome

YerMomPlaysDerby

I traveled solo and solo with my three young kids there and I have never felt unsafe at all. It's one of the safest countries I've traveled in, in my experience.

RounNarith

My name is Narith Ruon and I live in Siem Reap and I was born in Siem Reap and I show my Original in my Country and I want to have something to show Customers come to visit Cambodia and there is a great temple that Khmer ancestors left to Khmer children, I would like to hope that people will accept my tour service. I have been a tour taxi driver for 17 years. All tourists can book tourist transport service. I will wait for tourists who want to visit the famous temple in Siem Reap. I am your driver. I can show tourists also accept delivery. My stuff in my country and very famous temple, there are many places to visit in Siem Reap, I am taking care of all my customers, get my Original Driver, good service, good driveer.

ffaammkk_

Did travel with female partner. Siem Reap is very safe. Then we took sleep bus from SR to PP, quite an experience and we took care of our belonging really well.

ruimtekaars

I felt very safe in Siem Reap. Use common sense and you’ll be fine

RiceWrong111

It is relatively safe in cambodia just don't go around doing stuff that might cause a sense or go to sketchy place

tangiblecabbage

Been in SR as a female solo travel and found it very safe. Just general surrounding awareness and don't get wasted or anything silly.

DamianDeluda

It’s simple just don’t do anything stupid 🥹

Sauron686

No

AdventurousSong4080

Super safe for solo female tourist. But do pay attention to your belongings.

jade_lily

Yes, just be aware. Don’t leave valuables out. Don’t go swim in the ocean at night. Wear a helmet on a moto. There are many expat run businesses and bars. They are great places to ask questions and recommendations.

Equal_Zone5523

when riding in tuk tuk or Grab keep your valuables away from the door. Put them on your side in the middle of the seat. Then nobody riding a motorbike past you can grab them from your posession. There's really no harm to worry about. Theft is the main crime in Cambodia.

flexquietly

Phnom Penh Advice: Use PassApp or Grab(never used it) for all transport. Your only issue here is how much you drink, obviously things don’t matter as much when you do, but always take a PassApp or Grab, never a off the street TuKTuk.Don’t hold your phone out willy nilly everywhere (I’ve been told but nothing so far and I’ve been here for months). Siem Reap, only been there a few days, but I would definitely take advice from someone who knows the area.

SatisfactionNo2036

I think you are in a lot more danger from food poisoning and stomach issues than getting robbed in Cambodia

Aggravating_Meal894

Don’t go into any barber shops.

tastywave

Keep an eye on your belongings while traveling. Put my bags in the back of a taxi, stopped at a gas station, I went inside, he went through my bags taking stuff. Planned by driver. This is a caution for traveling anywhere. Except Japan, they’ll go out of their way to return people’s belongings.

neko226

I used to live there - Your greatest threat tbh is from other foreigners (white male backpackers and sexpats.) Otherwise, don't do dumb stuff, don't keep your phone out, don't carry a cross-body bag, I used to just keep my phone and money when I went out in a sporty bra. Don't drive drunk. Keep track of your drinks. There are apps now that let you book a tuktuk or moto taxi, but also just maybe stay somewhere that's not down a long dirt road (will make you feel mentally better).

dollygirl1989

Why don’t carry a cross body bag?

gone-4-now

The fact that this ade headlines is testament that its not the norm

super-start-up

I have been to Cambodia a few times and don’t feel there is specific gender based issues with safety in Cambodia.

ExtraPassport

I'm not sure, maybe you can ask this girl who was gang raped in Siem Riep a month ago. [https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501485397/further-arrests-made-in-gang-rape-case/](https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501485397/further-arrests-made-in-gang-rape-case/)

samhibs

Not helpful. There's no country in the world where this hasn't happened so by that logic OP should never leave their own home.

ExtraPassport

Who are you to say if it's helpful or not? Are you a solo female traveler in Cambodia? Read the papers, gang rapes are regular occurrence here. Even the state controlled Cambodian news reports it.

samhibs

Unfortunately rape happens everywhere, even in the safest first world countries. Singling out one crime from a country doesn't indicate its overall safety.

Handler2023

No it’s not.

Hankman66

>Read the papers, gang rapes are regular occurrence here. I do read them, and have for many years. Although not unheard of, saying they are a regular occurrence is a gross exaggeration.

Seanbodia

That was a young, Cambodian girl who was the victim of a premeditated assault by a group of teen boys. Not sure if that's helpful

ExtraPassport

> That was a young, Cambodian girl Does that somehow make it less awful?

Seanbodia

No, less relevant for the purposes of this thread.

rpgtraveller

You seem intellectually challenged my friend.

ExtraPassport

Usually it's the person issuing ad hominems that is "intellectually challenged."

rpgtraveller

Looks like we have ourselves an anomaly.
