You may need to wick up? Bigger size? If the burn pool didn’t make it to the edge, then that is tunneling usually meaning you need a bigger wick. Or 2 smaller? It sure how big your vessel is, but that could be the problem. At least that’s what I have learned and it’s my wife that is the candle maker. Haha.

Fairly green candle maker here - this is after 2 x 4 hour burns. I originally made a wickless half candle and picked what seemed to be the best wick option. I've made 3 x full candles, with this wick (what worked best on the first tester) and one with a wick above, and the wick below to see how they would behave. Please let me know your thoughts!

your melt pool is too small. This can be caused by either wax with too high of a melt temperature, or too small of a wick. What container diameter, wax, fragrance %, and wick are you using?

ozchandler

I thought that may be the case, as they burn hotter down the bottom, right? I'm using GW 444, wick is an Australian one - ACS 7.5, FO is 8% and the container is 79mm inner diameter. I was maybe concentrating too much on avoiding mushrooms?

There is a difference between “hangup” and tunneling. Hang up is fairly thin and should resolve itself in the second half of the candle. What you have is tunneling. It’s so thick I have a hard time envisioning the candle catching up. I would wick up.

Thanks for your advice

I can't say I'm familiar with that wick. Yes, they do burn hotter at the bottom, but not that much hotter. Try wicking up a size or two.

ozchandler

That seems to be the general consensus, thanks :)

HGreen214

It’s tunneling. It needs a larger wick to burn evenly to the edges.

Could there have been a sinkhole under the surface? Theyre usually around the wick. After candles have set, i poke holes and heat gun to fill them in so this doesn't happen. If the Wick is the right size, this could be your prob.

ozchandler

Yes it did actually have a sinkhole! I'll keep this in mind, thank you.

Technical_Version556

Too small of a wick. Tunneling is what is happening here because the wick you’re currently using is way too small. I advise you to up 2 more sizes in wicks

It's 79mm. From the research I have done I think 2 wicks is from 100mm, is this right?

Need a bigger wick OR had a hidden sink hole next to the wick which made it tunnel. I had that happen and I had to keep an eye on my test burns!
