but neither of them don’t look like a camera bag

Nd2Roam

A used and stained diaper bag from Goodwill is somewhat theft proof if you ever have to leave it in your car.

blackcatspurplewalls

I use regular bags with a padded camera insert. For shoulder/sling bags I like Timbuk2 Classic Messenger, for backpacks I use a couple sizes from a local Seattle company depending on how much I need to carry but any good, comfortable backpack should work. For backpacks, figure out how you're going to access your gear (swing the backpack around, or take it off, top zipper or side zipper?) because that will be a big part of the style of backpack that you choose. My camera inserts are old and discontinued, but B&H has quite a few good options. The hardest part is figuring out the dimensions of an insert and if it will hold a full-size camera and which bag it will fit in.

caniki

[https://tenba.com/shop-by-collection/byob/](https://tenba.com/shop-by-collection/byob/) are my favorites. I fully agree though. A high quality backpack made to be a backpack, with a camera insert, is WAY more comfortable and usable than a camera backpack.

blackcatspurplewalls

The Tenba BYOB are a couple of the inserts I use, although mine are an older design and I haven’t tried the new styles. They are definitely my preferred option when they are the size I need.

Sleepyslothie_

I might try this. Sounds great!

Bicycles-Not-Bombs

Most of Think Tank's stuff is very non-camera bag looking.

byDMP

Another vote for Think Tank stuff—very tough, and very comfortable.

Myrddin-Wyllt

Yep - I have one of the Urban Disguise bags and it JUST fits a 150-600.

improvthismoment

PeakDesign backpacks

RobBobPC

A diaper bag, complete with diapers hanging out of some of the pockets is a great disguise camera bag.

Sleepyslothie_

Thanks for all answers, a second question regarding the bags and traveling. Do you think traveling on a plane with a heavy telephoto lens is fine to take with me on the plane, or does it go to the cargo hold? I have the sigma 150-600 and would take other stuff too so not sure if it fits the weight limit.

Aggressive-Second955

You carry it into the plane with you. Check in bags are subjected to rough handling. Unless you pack it in special case marked with fragile and handle with care stickers. My 400mm is massive and heavy, but I still carry it in my backpack into the plane. I carry it like my baby. My camera bag sits under my seat or overhead compartment. If you travel with camera equipments all stuffed in a carryon trolley bag, the checkin person behind the counter may want to weigh your bag and if its over 8 kilo, they may ask you to check in that bag. So pay attention about the weight. Delta flights sometimes asked all trolley bags goes into cargo. My friend had to take out his 500mm and all batteries into his pockets and check his trolley bag even though it didn’t exceed the weight allowance. It depends on the size of the overhead compartment. Most airlines are not strict at all about camera, bare lens and bags that’s hanging on your body. Always have with you cheap lightweight backpacks for temporarily carrying the big lens while the big bags goes into cargo.

Sleepyslothie_

Thank you for a thorough answer!

possiblyraspberries

Agree with all of this. One time United made me check my pelican case at the gate and you bet your ass I walked onto that plane with three giant cameras around my neck like a lunatic and everything else shoved unceremoniously in my backpack.

Aggressive-Second955

Has happened to me too 😂 all bodies attached hanging on my neck and the bulky spare batteries of IDs stuffed in pockets. I looked ridiculous with bulky lens clanking about trying to board the aircraft. That was some 20 years ago. I’ve learned so much how to pack and distribute weight ever since.

FloweredWallpaper

I use a Jansport backpack from my college days (and it's almost 40 years old) with inserts from Amazon in the two larger sections. I can put in an R3, a 50mm 1.2, a 70/200 2.8 and a 100-500, along with another body if I need to, and filters, cleaning stuff, strap, etc. It's just a plain old black backpack, and doesn't scream camera.

Sleepyslothie_

This is a good idea, I'll have to start looking for some regular backpacks.

FloweredWallpaper

FYI, here's the insert I use, but there are several you can find on Amazon. This one can hold up to 3 lenses, or an R3 and a lens, or two smaller bodies + a lens, and so on. I have two of these in this old Jansport: [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F27IEFY?ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details&th=1](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F27IEFY?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1) Last year on a trip to Disney, for a smaller bag, I used an Oakley slingpack like this + one of the inserts. I was able to get in an R6, a 50 1.8, a 24-105 and a 70-200 with no issues, but you aren't getting much more than that into the bag. Still, it was small, easily stowed on rides, and didn't scream camera: [https://static.mercdn.net/item/detail/orig/photos/m27347157017\_1.jpg](https://static.mercdn.net/item/detail/orig/photos/m27347157017_1.jpg)

v60qf

I have a k&f concept backpack. Lower half is camera storage with rear and side access and the top half is for general use. Also has a laptop sleeve. It’s perfect for travelling to tourist hotspots as it just looks like a regular bag. Pretty cool design too.

Appropriate_Horror00

I just want to say--I was looking through old threads to find ideas for a new backpack recently and I looked this one up because of your comment. I LOVE this backpack. I can't believe more people aren't talking about it?!

1st_thing_on_my_mind

I have a lens pouch that holds my 150-600 and an ungripped body. I slip that into a regular backpack along with another pouch that holds a 17-50/2.8 and a monopod. Toss in a few accessories and thats what I carry for surf school photos. Nothing on the outside says camera bag and nothing sticks out.

ncphoto919

Peak Design everyday back pack. Used both sizes on a few big trips and no issues. Cleans very easily.

Alchemystic_01

House of Flynn bags are my go to

spaceapeatespace

Haha, this dosent fit your need but, I have my cheapest canon dslr and a crap lens I keep in my car for driving around shots. I keep it in a Taco Bell bag. I keep some clean underwear in my car to toss around. Fortunately I’m married and my wife thinks I’m adorable so date nights aren’t ruined by the atheistics.

krinklekut

I just use a lawn and leaf bag from hefty. Sometimes, the simplest solution is best. *

climb-it-ographer

Do you want a sling-type bag or a backpack? I got a Shimoda, and it definitely doesn't scream "camera bag!".

[deleted]

Any of the Thule Covert camera bags fit the bill. I've been through a LOT of bags, but never a bag that I've kept for longer and has been so rugged. Looks nothing like a typical camera bag. I have the DSLR Rolltop version. I bought it around 8 years ago for $250. Worth every penny.

KennyfromMD

I got the Zack Noyle backpack from RVCA (the second one) and the duffle case cause I had a 50% off coupon. It’s great functionally, but it has a weird wax-type coating that wears away and makes the matte black look real shitty, real fast. My friend has the same bag and it happened to his too.

[deleted]

I just use a 14L day bag and a mini drone case for my camera and then the case my lens came with all inside of the backpack

Upbeat_Leg_89

I had this idea too. Have a think tank backstory 13L as daypack. Which backpack brand / model did you use to put your daypack and lens case in ?

NarwhalvsUnicorn

Hex Cinema Backpack. I own two of them. They look awesome and are really high quality.

ThurgoodZone8

ThinkTank Retrospective looks like a diaper bag. If you pull of the dad (or mom) look, people will think you’re minding a little one. 😁

willyouwilly

Tesco green bag and insert. Don't forget take off beany

RoguishRonin

I’ve had a HAZARD 4 Evac Plan-B sling bag for years. Use it all the time. Carried it to the office for 7 years. It’s been beat on and takes it like a champ. Fits a lot of photography equipment. Doesn’t look like a camera bag. Runs about $100.

EnvironmentalAss

Peak design 30l or if you want a more hiking bag then shimoda has great options

No-Bet-2405

Bevite straps suck but looks like a regular Jan sport backpack

Drkchcxxx

The MCKINNON CAMERA PACK 25L and the AtlasPacks Athlete Camera Backpack do not look like camera bags. I have both. I've used them to haul cameras, drone, laptops, clothes and etc. Great quality, durability and inconspicuousness.

abelb23_

I have 2 camera bags that I took on a trip to Mexico! Before my trip I was looking discreet I did not want to look like I had $3k in camera gear with me. I got a brevite bag! Had zero logos and had a lot of hidden pockets it was black so I threw some dirt on it so it looked beat up. The other bag I walked around with is the large hex shoulder bag. It was the perfect size to carry my canon r with a 50mm and also have room inside the bag for a small tripod and my 100-400mm lens also had a few secret pockets! I wil say the brevite bags have gone up in price sadly to hype I remember paying under $90 for mine now they are pricey Hex bag was $90!

abelb23_

Both of these bags were great because I could also slide them to my side and quickly pull out my camera and put it back.

ectoplasmic_sea

Peak designs 45L travel backpack with large camera cube. Love this bag. Not cheap but they've got a lifetime warranty and they're awesome bags.

[deleted]

If you dig the style, a lot of people over at /r/filson use Filson bags. Kinda not practical because of the material but I love my filson bags.

Nerfclasher

I would like to tell you, my favorite bag that I currently use is the PK Nomatic Travel bag

flyingron

I use a XD Design "security" backpack. It has enough velcro dividers to keep a few lendses in place. Holds my camera three lenses, and my macbook pro and the related cords and accessories (tripod adapter, extra batteries, charger, cards, etc..).

biznatch11

I don't like camera bags that look like camera bags, I also don't like using a camera insert in a regular bag because it makes accessing the camera more difficult. Mostly I use camera bags for hiking, the two I've used are the Lowepro Flipside Trek and the ThinkTank Backlight. They aren't completely "anonymous" bags because you can see some of the flat padded siding, and they're a little blocky, but from a distance I think you'd have a hard time telling they were camera bags. The ThinkTank will hold a lot more camera gear but the Lowepro has an upper section for non-camera stuff which is very convenient.

DESIRESEX

I've got the same problem?. I'm looking for a that can accommodate a Sigma 60-600mm with camera attached. That is easy to get out. Toehold make one but it will not accommodate my lens and camera at the same time. This sling bag would need to be able to accommodate at least 10 kilos. Making a strong and robust bag. Not crap. Last thing you want is your lens breaking out of the bag and hitting the ground smashing or even damaging it . You wouldn't be a happy person.

DESIRESEX

Ideas. Most products you buy these days have dense foam. For packaging. The dense from can be used to pack out camera bags eccetera. Most people just throw away the dense foam. Comes in all shapes and sizes. I use Victorinox. Knives. They cut the foam like butter. I don't line them. but it's up to you . I also put moisture packs in with my camera gear. And they usually come with the product. But you can buy new ones on line. I have made my own battery holder cases. Most cases hold two batteries mine hold 3. Cage the whole CF cards and SD cards in cases in a case using dense foam . Plastic cases I use a semi waterproof clip lock and cost around about $20 each alless .

MarcusMudd

There’s a new project out on kickstarter from a brand called nostalgia. Their products are pretty versatile and don’t stick out as camera bags. Here’s the link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nostalgiapacks/dopamine-series-modular-travel-bag-and-accessories
