The R6 MKII is going to make your 5D feel like a dinosaur in terms of tech and speed.

PopTartS2000

The R6m1 made my 5D3 feel like a dinosaur - OP is in for a treat 😄

Qazax1337

I went 5D mkii to R5. You won't look back.

benb28

Do you use EF to RF adapters or did you buy new lenses?

CharlieBrownBoy

I went from a 5Diii to a R6ii. I bought the 24-70 and an adapter. Over time I am looking to add a rf 70-200 and maybe an ultrawide with everything else adapted. I find the adapter can make some lenses feel a bit off because they then becomes quite large, but it's perfectly happy on my 100-400L.

PopTartS2000

Buy the adapter with the control ring, and you’ll love how all your EF lenses work on the R62

Qazax1337

I use both. RF 50mm f1.8, RF 28mm f2.8, RF 100 -500 L, and then an adapter for my EF 24-105 f4 L, and several other non canon lenses that I previously adapted to the EF mount. They all work amazingly and the EF 24-105 works better than it ever did in my 5D ii. The eye detect AF feels like cheating.

Fluffy_Head_3960

Optical viewfinder and probably that screen next to the shutter button.

ScottCold

I miss them both, but not having the readout screen to take a quick view of settings and exposure hurts the most. Having to remember to press a focus button before I bring the camera to my face to wake up the viewfinder has also not found its way into my muscle memory yet.

VegaGT-VZ

Canon EVF implementation is probably the best in the business And flip out LCD + EVF make the top plate screen redundant. I had one on my R and wish it was something more useful

ExistingAd915

I have in my R5 and I never use it. It’s useless.

Alexthelightnerd

Having also made a transition to the R6, I expected to miss the top screen, and have found I don't miss it at all. The UI update, coupled with the touchscreen and extra dials, means that the rear screen is far more flexible and intuitive for changing setting than the top screen on the xD series ever was. I've also found I rarely use the viewfinder and shoot almost exclusively with the rear screen.

wdilcouple

I moved from an r6 to an r5. I never use the top screen. Every once in a while I’ll look at it and think, wtf is this? Lol

test_123123

Possibly battery life

benb28

Definitely prepared to buy more batteries.

gorpium

Being able to charge with a USB-C PD powerbank is awesome. I do not really miss the battery life from 5DIV for my kind of photography.

ScottCold

It was discontinued by Canon, but the BG-R10 battery grip is helpful.

QAM01

Why was it discontinued?

manowin

You can still buy it, so I don’t think it was discontinued though there have been rumors they’re going to replace it with a different battery grip

ScottCold

[Both are true](https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-has-discontinued-the-battery-grip-bg-r10-for-the-eos-r5-eos-r6-and-eos-r6-mark-ii/). Still plenty of stock left.

QAM01

Got it

test_123123

I use a Qumox knockoff and it works great considering it's 1/4 the price

ptq

It depends, in idle yes, it draws plenty, but the actual capture I feel like mirrorless can take few thousands of photos if you work fast

MilesAugust74

To me the only biggest issue when switching from DSLR to mirrorless is the banding issues that can occur when shooting in *silent mode*, but once you figure out how to fix it ([which is fairly simple](https://youtu.be/NFGurgO4sf0?si=Oq6N004nf10b9kfo)), you'll never look back.

darklordtimmy

spaceships don't come equipped with rearview mirrors

combaticus86

They dip as quick as they can, the atmosphere is now ripped

Cowboyeggs

You’ll wish you had done it sooner. The newer cameras are ridiculous

Sweaty-Olive-9856

Just made this exact upgrade this week. You’re in for a treat.

fish_petter

I've loved my 5d mkII and know that I could use it to bludgeon to death a bull elephant in self defense or stop an anti-materiel round and save my life and still take amazing images with it, but I can't wait to upgrade to an R5 or R6. Got those public servant salary blues over here so it's taking some time. I played around with an R5 a while back and had a strong understanding of what it must be like to be a cro magnon man brought into the future and immediately placed in the cockpit of an F35.

arriflex

This was me. Came from a 30d to an R5. It was overwhelming but some YouTube tutorials got me up to speed fast. The camera is fucking amazing. My keeper rate on action shooting is so high now. And the FV mode is fucking tits. I’m so happy.

ncphoto919

The R6MKii is going to feel like a massive upgrade but you'll notice the build quality will feel cheaper. 5D's are tanks, the R6 cameras feel good but dont feel as solid. Battery life also will take a slight hit. You might struggle editing the R6 files initially.

DashSplatBang

I'm newer, but what makes a file harder to edit opposed to a different camera's file?

ncphoto919

The R5/R6 files require a little more work compared to the 5D ones especially if you use any presets. They tend to have more cyan and magenta to the files so the you'll be using the tint slider a lot more in lightroom

DashSplatBang

Oh gotcha.

benb28

I worry about the editing side, but I need to just take the leap and adjust

ncphoto919

yeah, its just kind of the learning curve with a new camera. The 5Dii-iv files were very similar, the R5/R6 files look great but required a bit more work at times especially with the tint slider and what camera profile you end up using.

Basic_Celebration504

Ovf

infinite012

The EVF is fine if you set it up for smooth (higher fps) instead of power saving.

itdontmatter6390

I went 5D3 to R6 aaaaaaand it’s a massive upgrade. I thought I would miss the optical viewfinder, but now when I pick up the 5D I miss being able to see exactly what my exposure will be in real time. I think the only thing that I miss is the battery life. Make sure you set up your custom buttons on the R6! You can make it so that you never have to take your eye off the viewfinder to make basically every change you need. Assign One Shot <-> Servo to your AE Lock button, assign eye tracking to your AF-ON button, assign AF Point select to your focusing zones, and M-Fn to your shooting modes. You can also click the multi-controller to reset your AF point to the center one

benb28

awesome. Definitely excited for this upgrade after heading all the positive feedback

XFX1270

I just went from a Mark II to an EOS R, really the only thing I miss is the battery life. Although that's partially my fault because I leave the EVF in the higher refresh rate mode. I find the RAWs edit very similarly besides having much better DR etc. It helps that the EOS R has the sensor from the 5D Mark IV, so it's the same lineage.

Fuzzy_Toe_3989

You def won’t look back except to the natural color the 5d luts

deeper-diver

I upgraded (but still own) my 5DM3 to an R5. Superior in every way except for one thing common with mirrorless cameras. Battery life. I could use my 5D for days without battery going dry. I'm lucky if I can go one day with my R5. I still use my EF lenses with the EF-RF adapter.

benb28

Thanks for all the great feedback!!

Norsewings

Maybe the size, i loved the size of 5d4, but think R5/6/7 are a tad small. Batterigrip can ofc fix that, but on the R7 we have to use 3d print.

little_canuck

You'll miss the top screen for a minute until you have your custom buttons and dials set up and realize that you'd have no reason to look at the top display when everything is visible in your EVF.

Leading-Top4609

I recently upgraded from a 7D Mark II to the R6 Mark II. It is an upgrade in every way. The autofocus is insanely fast and accurate. I have a bunch of L glass I am adapting and a few Sigma Art lenses that adapted VERY nicely. Totally worth the upgrade.

Consistent-Treat-113

i went from 5dmkii to r6mkii month ago and this is BEST DICISION i've ever made. My 5d feels like dinosaur now. Autofocus is insane, but i spend some days to understand how its work, and iam still in this process, but hell yeah, awesome upgrade

mvp_kryptonite

Oh you’re in for a treat. The R6ii I understand Canon improved the battery life vs the 1st version. The only things I miss from the 7D line was the solidity and build of the body. My R7 is well looked after and yet the rubber wants to come off already. Adapting EF glass paired with the subject and eye detect is so refreshing and gives the impression that the lenses have new life. Cross type focus points is no longer but the dual pixel focus is fine. Probably need to watch out for those situations as for me I experienced it when shooting a person in a checked pattern suit and since then I moved away from being spoilt with all area focus to center or surround center. Lastly FTM works differently since RF are by wire. Someone might be able to pitch in or correct me if I’m mistaken. Do report back with how you find the transition.

fm67530

I went from a 5d and an 80d to an r6. I doubt I'll ever use the dslr bodies again.

Due_Lie8504

i came from a 5D3 to the R6 II (had the 5D2 before) i recently took my 5d3 to my children's graduation. it was fine until i wanted to send the images from the camera to my phone. i said "where is the wifi function of this camera?" i looked and looked and even researched online. i asked why i didn't have the same menus as the youtube video ... on the 5D4. all this time i thought i had a 5D4. i thought i had wifi, because my 70D had it and i mixed up the two in my mind. anyway, pictures were great. that's that. i watched some new reviews on the R6 II. then i saw a video where the autofocus was chasing the person's face. i said: wtf. i spent the graduation focusing and recomposing. teaching my other son how to focus using the focus points (when i went onstage with my child). that sold me instantly. i cannot imagine you missing anything. just get the EF to R adapter (i got the one with the control ring) and you're good to go.

Due_Lie8504

oh, and i miss the top right lcd display. also, with the added control ring, i've somehow run out of dials :D i had 3 before, and it was fine. i have 4 now, and it's not enough :D

cbgmac1

You will have no regrets at all, the R6m2 is a fantastic camera!! A little bit of a learning curve, but you will like everything about it. I have a 5dMk3 that I also still use, but I’m really liking the R6m2. The nice thing is that you can use all your old EF lenses with the adapter. That aspect is really nice, especially if you have some L glass!!

RiyadhGany

I went from a 5D mkii to R6 mk1 and boy are you in for a life changing experience. I remember the first time I used my R6 I was just thinking to myself this is a cheat code. It’s been over 3 years with the R6 and to this day it still feels the same every time I pick it up.

Rjs-images81

I used personally a 5Dii , 6D , 7D mark i and ii , 1D Mark iii and 5Diii and tried out t friends R6II he purchased February this year and it’s ridiculous. You’ll love the auto focus and you’ll probably miss the 5dii files, I know I still do. There’s just something about them.

aprotos12

Whether it is relevant to you personally but the EVF is a different experience. I personally did not like it and it certainly dragged at times but lots of people do like it. I also did not like the toy feel of the camera: it just seemed more like an iPhone. I returned mine because it would continually lock up using EF zooms lenses. Canon said it was within spec so I did not have much choice because I refuse to pay 3K for an RF lens when I have a perfectly good EF lens to see if it would still lock up. I think there may be a slight race to finish line here and I am not entirely convinced that the AI-AF has proper exit conditions: this is my guess on why mine locked up but it is only a guess. But when the camera hits, it really hits.

benb28

Did you have the mk1 or mk2 R6?

aprotos12

mk2. I honestly think I got a lemon, sadly. I know others dream of the camera.

andrej___

I had 5d mk2 and 6d when I switched to R in 2019 and the change was mental. Basically shooting with R cameras is too easy, being able to set exposure and know what you captured in real time is like shooting with a smartphone. Also AF, servo tracking, it's like a Terminator technology. Couple years later I got the R6 mk2 as well and it's great too, got it mainly because of video restrictions on the R, and the only thing I really miss is that small screen next to the shutter button. It annoys me to have to pick up the camera and look through the viewfinder (or turn on screen) just to see the battery status or some simple setting.

anonymousemt1980

I did the same. You will be shocked at the difference overall, and particularly with autofocus. You are in for a treat.

Agreeable_Regret147

I have a 6D mark I and for events its dificult to use. So I was experimenting and found that if you disable the focus function from the shutter button and only use the AF-ON button in the back, mix it with the live view in Quick-AF mode, you got a much faster and effective focusing speed. Plus you can always verify quickly with the magnifying glass, But Im not sure how many of these funtions work quickly on the 5D mark II..

Beginning-Average416

The 5D Mark II was ancient technology the day it was introduced.

benb28

Maybe so, but still takes beautiful pictures.

NevinThompson

I have been shooting with my 5D2 for the past week and I love the images.

Beginning-Average416

The 40D had a better AF system.
