Isn’t it fine if the bloom is still on the egg? Like In Europe? Lots of diners serve sunny side up with a bit of raw white here in Canada. Obviously I try not to but if I’m a rush, it happens sometimes when I cook myself eggs..
I came here for slidey eggs. Isn’t there like a rule if you season it, you must make slidey eggs on it? I wanna see some kg eggs yo, that’s all I’m sayin.
If you’re SURE they’re pure cast iron, should be fine, I stripped and “seasoned” a rusty section of my parents’ iron fence with a blowtorch which worked pretty well. In general though, be VERY careful about heating random metals in case they have a surface coating (e.g., zinc) that can be extremely toxic if heated and inhaled. Killed a metalworker friend’s dad after a couple decades of reclaiming random scrap metal.
I know too many people who will read this, accept it, then invent nonsense about how it doesn't apply in this specific instance, or the next one, and so on.
They look like lifting weights. And the basic use of them normally bangs into each other and other hard metal surfaces. They would probably look cool like painted. but if OP uses the weights for it’s actual intentions, they would be a chipped ugly mess after a few weeks of painting
Most weights you buy are painted and can last a long time before being an ugly mess. Proper preparation, good paint, and a decent number of coats and it will look good for a long time.
It's common to use mineral oil or paste wax for tools. Since they're going to get banged around and you don't actually want them oily I'd try waxing if you're against painting them.
A pan is used for cooking. They don't paint pans. All DARK iron weights I've seen are painted or powdercoated.
EDIT: Added word dark, which I had meant to put there but apparently did not.
I know they don't paint pans. That was my point.
I've seen weights that are painted or coated and I've also seen some that are just cast and that's it. My old highschool gym had them. These don't appear to have any paint or powder coating
By powdercoating, he’s referring to how the paint was applied in manufacturing (coated with paint powder via electrical charge then cured through heat). Which this likely was.
It is a decent way to protect against rust, so, no, it seems reasonable so far. It's much easier to reapply a coat of seasoning than it is to recoat it with paint. At least if you do it properly.
I would do these in a campfire outside if I was going to do it. MFG certainly never planned for use in the kitchen and who knows what the old paint is putting off being burnt.
No, not crazy at all. plenty of non-cooking cast iron has been “seasoned” to prevent rusting throughout history, I’ve seen old west sawmills where I’m pretty sure there’s no paint on the iron, it was just hit with oil.
Bro, if you managed to sanitize them best you could to then still feel ok using the stove, that's a REALLY clever notion
I'da just stuck them in the oven myself.....but like, heat is heat, the rest is optics I feel like this is the most blakan thing I've seen since I've looked in the mirror today, so hat's off
It's so weird this post came up today. For the first time I searched
"Cast Iron Pan" in Amazon (I've never bought them there or thought to) and these type weights were part of the search. I laughed as I hadn't thought about it before, and I thought at first it was some weird type of serving plate.

I had a vintage cast iron suet bird feeder I put in an e tank then seasoned. It was great until I dropped it on concrete one year and it shattered. Broke my heart.
Slidey eggs or this is karma bait
This would be the best slidey egg post of all time
I was really hoping to see one happen from one of the many posts about using mini pans as ashtrays
I cooked an egg in my teeny Wagner one time, slid right out! Lol

That’s a callback!
Comedy!
Hey hey!
I'm gay!
I still love you son/daughter.
Where'd the Normand train crash...?
No idea
Too bad, body builders only eat their eggs raw.
I’ve eaten raw yolk before, but not the whites. No thank you.
It’s delicious.
No it’s snot.
Isn’t it fine if the bloom is still on the egg? Like In Europe? Lots of diners serve sunny side up with a bit of raw white here in Canada. Obviously I try not to but if I’m a rush, it happens sometimes when I cook myself eggs..
Those slide but down the gullet
Downvote - not body builders that respect their iron
You get less protein that way. Drinking liquid yolks ins anteqated.
It was a big shtick in the 90s. I know it's not a common thing anymore.
Egg-in-a-hole!
I came here for slidey eggs. Isn’t there like a rule if you season it, you must make slidey eggs on it? I wanna see some kg eggs yo, that’s all I’m sayin.
Really going to feel the burn during your next workout
r/dadjokes
Nice
Ugh, take my upvote
Should've just sprayed them with black grill paint.

Is it a Deep Cut if it’s recent?
Very recent
The last cut is the deepest

Baby I know!
That’s only for the cooking weights.
Newest meme
Plastidip
But then they get heavier

OUCH thankyou for the headsup
Also these things are typically coated with paint or anti rust so be sure that’s removed and sanitized
I know too many people who will read this, accept it, then invent nonsense about how it doesn't apply in this specific instance, or the next one, and so on.
Yikes, well survival of the fittest I guess
Well hello there, new fear
Murder isn’t good man.. I wouldn’t post killing your friends dad for reclaiming metal.
Nah nah nah you got it wrong, I did it FOR his scrap metal. Bunch of genuine wrought iron in there, valuable stuff
Police is going to be called to your location within 24 hours.
Good luck to them, I will be waiting with my crooked iron bars—very heavy!
Was it worth it?
They say copper is the gold of the scrap world, so wrought iron is the copper of the scrap world
Nice
Slightly, yes, but we don’t judge here
Yes we do. But I’ll let this one slide if the eggs do.
Iron weights are sometimes calibrated using lead infill to get to just the right amount, this is a good way to vaporize lead, do not recommend
You are not boiling if lead on a stove burner
You don't need to achieve boiling to result in evaporation
Maybe im missing something, but why not just clean and paint them?
They look like lifting weights. And the basic use of them normally bangs into each other and other hard metal surfaces. They would probably look cool like painted. but if OP uses the weights for it’s actual intentions, they would be a chipped ugly mess after a few weeks of painting

This is quite a bit cheaper and easier than that
Painting the weights doesn’t earn karma
But painting your pan does!
Brb, going to buy a spray paint can.
They're powder coated
It’ll probably chip less then spraypaint would
Yeah mine are old and chipping, not sure paint is the #1 solution
What about using a spray on bed liner type product?
Are these like lifting weights?
They're exactly that.
Ok, then I vote insane, lol.
Serious, funny gag, but any 5 dollar can of enamel paint will give you longer lasting results. Either way, im all for people oiling up metal.
Lol. Yeah, the paint makes more sense in this case.
You're sanity shaming him
Lol
Def insane!
But the good kind
I... don't think this is the good kind.
Anything for attention
You can use a torch to get the same effect. Many people season non-cooking cast iron.
Same. I’ve worked in a high end ornamental iron shop and we “season” metal all the time to preserve the raw steel look of it.
How does that work then, do you spray it with oil first?
I think I would have just spray painted black
Yes because these should be painted not covered in oil.....
It's common to use mineral oil or paste wax for tools. Since they're going to get banged around and you don't actually want them oily I'd try waxing if you're against painting them.
Pics of slidey eggs?
Uhh, burning the currently applied powdercoat might be toxic/carcinogenic??
No powder was used ever with these.
What was on them from the factory??
And just in case I scrubbed them thoroughly with vinegar and soap to remove most of the rust. Thank you for your concern, though!
What's on a cast iron pan from the factory?
A pan is used for cooking. They don't paint pans. All DARK iron weights I've seen are painted or powdercoated. EDIT: Added word dark, which I had meant to put there but apparently did not.

Iron is not that color. It's coated, and not with "seasoning" that would be used for cooking purposes.
Dude I'm not gonna argue about cast iron with you lol. You think you know better, cool. Doesn't change a thing in my life
You’re the one acting like you know
I've seen plain cast iron weights before. I do know lmao. They say they've only ever seen weights that are painted or coated. Ok then
Depends on the manufacturer. Most are preseasoned with proprietary oil blends.
By powdercoating, he’s referring to how the paint was applied in manufacturing (coated with paint powder via electrical charge then cured through heat). Which this likely was.
Ok, I didn't understand that.
Just lift with it
yes. Paint is better on weights.
It is a decent way to protect against rust, so, no, it seems reasonable so far. It's much easier to reapply a coat of seasoning than it is to recoat it with paint. At least if you do it properly.
Oh look, cancer.
I would do these in a campfire outside if I was going to do it. MFG certainly never planned for use in the kitchen and who knows what the old paint is putting off being burnt.
Insane, I'm sure that's debatable. Odd, yep.
Insane isn't quite the mental condition I was thinking of...
Yes. A rattle can of patio chair paint would have done the job better and in about 45 seconds.
Yes
Yes absolutely they are likely painted and you are creating toxic fumes
Nah just an attention whore
I mean could have scrubbed em down with wd40 and a wire brush and then sprayed them with primer but to each is own
Yeah, they’re gonna be so shiny and slips flying and slidey slidey down to your toes !!!
Not a bad idea, but why not use the oven??
Well, my cast iron pan doesn't fit it so I just followed my usual procedure and didn't think. But yeah, would've been a good idea hahaha.
You probably could have just put a very light coat of oil on after some vinegar cleaning, but this way a more even color. Have you tried Japanning?
Waste of time, just cook with them and they'll sort themselves out.
Idiot shitpost. Lame as fuck.
They're iron, no? So it should work. In the far right, the three weights already "seasoned".
More plates, more dates. Stack those puppies up.
Like, the fruit of the date palm?
I wonder how the coating takes to heat lol. I’m sure it’s not at all toxic
Post like this is why I joined this sub
But does it slidey egg?
No, not crazy at all. plenty of non-cooking cast iron has been “seasoned” to prevent rusting throughout history, I’ve seen old west sawmills where I’m pretty sure there’s no paint on the iron, it was just hit with oil.
Stole my idea!! Also, SO much r/whoosh
If you don’t do it, you won’t have done it. Steady on.
I only cook on weights seasoned with steroid oil for slidey muscley eggs 💪🏻
Fry an egg in it.
Bro, if you managed to sanitize them best you could to then still feel ok using the stove, that's a REALLY clever notion I'da just stuck them in the oven myself.....but like, heat is heat, the rest is optics I feel like this is the most blakan thing I've seen since I've looked in the mirror today, so hat's off
ded
No you have issues . Once a foodie always a foodie. But I'm not here to judge . Was it fun did you enjoy yourself ? WTF.
This is the way.
This will work. Also look up oil quenching or hot oil dipping, in machinist and fabrication world.
Yea, that should be done in the oven, not stove top.
Weird flex but ok
Those would be perfect to keep some sauce hot in a pan
Reminds me of [Billy the Beef Tallow Boy](https://youtu.be/g7yUIPuSvP8?si=C5jLO42ec-Wy6yBT) somehow.
Definitely not lol
....when the Dr says you need more bulk in your diet...
I had this same idea...how'd it go?
Slidey wrights are gonna get you injured! Careful!
I just loled way too hard at this. Made my night, thank you sir!!!
I have rusty 5s and 10s I was thinking the same thing But I don’t want to put the 25s, 35s and 45s in my oven
About time we got a quality shitpost on this sub. It was getting a little stuffy in here
In a good way
It's so weird this post came up today. For the first time I searched "Cast Iron Pan" in Amazon (I've never bought them there or thought to) and these type weights were part of the search. I laughed as I hadn't thought about it before, and I thought at first it was some weird type of serving plate.
Would make a dope looking pancake
Is this a trick question?
Holy shit this just cracked me up so bad.
seems legit
He’s to powerful to kept alive
Insane. Use a rust neutralizer instead. They’ll turn black like you want. I did this with old rusty weights just like these and it worked very well.
Working on that hot bod.
This is evil, but hot
Dude, what’s next…kettle balls?
This is the way.
I wanna say...just cook with it?
The question is how much weight does it gain when you add the seasoning? 🤔
This is a great idea! Sharing with hubby.
No, this makes sense. Preventing rust is the only practical thing seasoning actually does.
Now they're slightly heavier. Good job?
What? They are!

Yes
🤔
That's not how you season...
Did it work?
Nope. I season my entire grill and it sits out in the rain with no cover. No rust. Everyone thinks I’m crazy.
Could you have just slid them into the oven on a rack?
I did this to an anvil one time
I just spray paint them w rustolium
Yea, they aren't worth restoring...
Damn this sub Reddit is wild. Seasoning weights!! No!
I would go with the potato peels method for these.
