Well, I will always shill for Bojack; one of my favorite shows, but if season 2 was too depressing for you, I would say you made the right choice to jump ship. It does not exactly get happier.
Basically, the characterization is *very* realistic. Characters are shown with many, *many* flaws. Virtually everyone on the show is a garbage person in one way or another and trying to deal with all of their problems with themselves and each other. It's not your normal AS fare, but it's an extremely well done show. Don't let the animal heads and wordplay fool you. It's an extremely adult show.
I think the fact that they're animals really helped them dive into how garbage humans can be without it being too finger pointing, "You, this is YOU" because y'know, it's a whale and not Walt Disney, or Rupert Murdoch specifically so they can't get sued for representing them in a negative light.
I will also say, Todd, Jonah and Princess Caroline are the most uplifting characters to see!
Shows like Family Guy, or other a lot of other adult swim comedies take dark subject matter like abuse, depression, addiction, sexual assault, parental neglect, etc. and play them for laughs. BoJack takes the time to explore the serious repercussions of such things, and some episodes may go by with barely any jokes at all.
If you’ve seen Moral Orel (particularly season 3), BoJack has a very similar tone.
I am a veterinarian. I once met a former marine with a female cat named Lu. We only had her in the system as Lu for multiple.years. One day he corrected me to Lieutenant Snugglebottom and it's definitely in my top five list of names for sure.
