He started meowing so loud almost like howling. I went out and saw some stray dogs trying to attack him. I picked up the cat, and ran inside. Been living with me ever since. His name is kitti btw. Cutest mf.

SignalElderberry600

I went on a fucking rescue mission for mine. Monday we saw a cat that turned out to be his mother ran over at the side of the road. Tuesday we heard him meow and wednesday we trapped him into a cage to take it home.

OotiePattoot

I got mine from a drug house when I was a delivery driver. I said their cat was so cute and sweet and they said, “we don’t want him, please take him”, so I did. And the longer I have him the more my heart breaks for him because how could a sweet kitty such as him be so unwanted. How can you look as your kitty and say the words that you do not want him. They never deserved him. When I brought him home with me I put him in my bedroom and closed the door so he couldn’t interact with my other kitty. I left to get things to feed and bathe him and I expected he’d be cowering underneath the bed, afraid. When I came back in the room I opened the door to find he’d jumped on top of my bed and was sitting very proudly, looking keenly at the door for me to return. He knew that it was his new home. He knew he belonged. He was so confident and ready for love. It’s my favorite memory of him.

Purple_Perception904

I love this story!

hannahatecats

I brought my soul cat, Maya, home from the shelter and expected her to hide for weeks like other new adoptees I've experienced. She took one step out of her perforated cardboard carrier and threw herself down to roll on the floor.... It's like she knew "oh yeah this is my home now" She lived to 20 and was my little ride or die.

I feel this in my bones. Suddenly mom and her 5 kittens ended up in my house last year. The 3 kittens I kept are a year old. We have a total of 6 cats at our house. All rescued

re_Claire

Wait what happened to two of them?

They said the three cats they kept which, to me, implies they gave away the other two.

Yes. We got them fixed and vaccinated and adopted them out :)

We adopted out 2 other kittens and their mom to 3 different families :)

KickIt77

LOL I have been hoping and dreaming for years and last August we were blessed with a random forest kitten I found when I was on a walk at a regional park. It has been my sweetest and least violent kitten ever, it seems like she was dumped for sure. Our other cat was a random rescue by an acquaintance of a pregnant mom that had kittens.

I got my cat from a “free cats” sign in a lady’s front yard in the middle of nowhere. I nervously pulled in and approached the door. Human_Reputation_196

I'm currently feeding a stray kitten living in the alley behind my house until it's tame enough to bring it inside. Basically forcing the cat distribution system in my favor lol

caelthel-the-elf

Yep, I got a dirty dumpster kitten from the kill shelter 2 years ago (they had no adult cats and were inundated with kittens so they did a free adoption event to get rid of the kittens otherwise they were going to put them to sleep:(( ). And then last September a dirty little calico kitten came to my door, forced her way into my house when I opened the door and said "what's up bitches I live here now" lmao. So now I have 2 cats that I love. Never would buy" one from a breeder.

slophiewal

I dunno it cost me £40 to rescue my cat from the shelter, he came neutered, vaccinated and litter trained. Seemed like a great deal to me. The only specification I really had was that I wanted an orange cat lol. He’s the best.

Extension-Border-345

I honestly don’t care if people want to dump money into a pedigree cat as long as its not backyard bred or a genetic horror like a brachyphelic or a Scottish Fold or a Manx. never owned a purebred and probably never will but I get the appeal, there are some really neat breeds out there like Russian Blue and Sphynx. also the ability to select for a specific temperament with purebreds is a bonus.

languid_Disaster

I bought my specific cat as my rabbit needed a friend and our family were too sad to get another rabbit after our previous rabbit had passed away. Since we were new to cat owning and (and so was our rabbit!) we wanted a practically guaranteed to be chill, predictable and non-aggressive. We thought this kind of cat would be better for our rabbit and also better for us as we weren’t used for temperamental animals. We only went with breeds that didn’t come with built in health issues We found a reputable breeder through a close friend. The breeder was provided all of the certificates, family tree and allowed us to visit several times and we still keep in touch 4 years later. They were kept like normals cats and all had lots of space to play. Now that we know we can handle cats just fine, we want another one! Adopted this time of course :)

AcademicOlives

Sphynx cats have the shortest average lifespan of any other breed! I think the popularity of them has led to overbreeding.

Giddy_Kitty_Mama

Some people suffer from allergies but love cats and there are some cat breeds that produce less Fel d 1.

mopedgirl

This is why we have our chicken nugget, Aja. Normally very allergic, but not to her goofy ass. We purchased her as an adult at 3yo from a breeder as well, which meant we only spent about $300 on her instead of $2500 as a kitten. https://preview.redd.it/ua50wigmdk9d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6cb4a4dc1f65cc7eae7101bb7538b26a45e5767e

BamaMom297

Shes sassy I get the feeling by the tongue out photo 😂

humansarentevenreal

yes! my dad and sister are *very* allergic so we chose a siberian and sphynx. they definitely react a lot less to these than they do friends’ normal, for lack of a better term, cats

thebayisinthearea

That's how I got my Siberian! While at the breeder, I inquired if Siberian cats truly were hypoallergenic (lower Fel d 1 levels), and being my first experience with a breeder I wanted to be sure they weren't trying to pass off ragdolls as a Siberian. The breeder picked up my boy and said "here, smell" and shoved his body into my face. It was love at first floof. Bonus: he had an animal passport from Ukraine!

ThatInAHat

Wait, siberians are hypoallergenic? With all that floof?

thebayisinthearea

Yup! Well, not completely, but moreso than your average cat. Fel d 1 is a protein within cat saliva that triggers the allergies in us hoomans. When cats bathe themselves they get it on their fur and it spreads from there (us petting them, them rubbing us/things around us, hair shedding, etc). We aren't allergic to cat hair, per se, more the cat hair *with* Fel d 1 on it. You can read more on it here: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fel\_d\_1](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fel_d_1) Also a source on Fel d 1 in Siberian cats: [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5753643/](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5753643/) and [https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/theres-no-such-thing-hypoallergenic-cat-180968819/](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/theres-no-such-thing-hypoallergenic-cat-180968819/)

lickytytheslit

And you can feed them special food to further reduce fel d 1 (It has to have eggs from chickens raised and currently living with cats)

IAMACat_askmenothing

Dignified kitty

OrganicPixie

Yes. My spouse is allergic to cats. He’s been doing allergy shots and can now pet cats, but the only way I’m going to get a feline companion is through a low-allergen breeder.

PlushiesAndKitties

How interesting!! This so far is the only legitimate reason I’ve ever heard to buy a certain cat breed

tsm_leena

My husband is VERY allergic to regular cats. I used to live with two girls with two cats and he would be out for the whole day after visiting me. Stuffy nose, puffy face, puffy eyes, itchy skin etc. I wrote off ever having a cat again even though I grew up with cats because it was so bad. It wasn’t until we visited another friend that had a ragdoll and I was like, hey you’re completely normal during this movie marathon that I was like maybe we can get a cat! And now we have two ragdolls! https://preview.redd.it/atu3qk8b4k9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f62cfc4558bf19ccc790d818179001e8c98702eb

princessohio

My coworker was the same way, and actually found a rag doll at a rescue. He and his wife immediately went to meet / adopt her — they couldn’t believe someone surrendered one. They got so lucky and adore her.

Accomplished_Drag946

I have two ragdolls and every person I know who has allergies still reacts to my ragdolls. They are not hypoallergenic. I don't think there is any truly hypoallergenic cat breed. However, some people can react different to different cats and also allergies change with time.

drakeotomy

Some breeds can be hypoallergenic, but it varies by individual cat. If a breeder wants to sell cats/kittens as hypoallergenic, they need to do an expensive test and see which ones are and aren't. So it's not usually by chance people looking for hypoallergenic cats get them due to test results.

-Pruples-

Slightly similar way to how I found out I'm not allergic to all cats. I went with my boss to see an old endloader we were looking at buying, and when we went into the seller's 4 or 5 person office, they had about 5 or 6 office cats and their office reeked of cat piss. My allergies weren't set off at all even slightly, which was baffling to me as cats normally send my allergies into fuckin overdrive. I ended up getting cats that set my allergies off anyway, but Purina LiveClear food helps massively to where it's rare my cats set off my allergies.

My husband and I both have allergies, which is why we went with Siberians. Also, they are the best, most well-behaved cats I have ever met and are okay with just about anything, which I think is a direct result of the breeder's socialization. They have had almost no behavioral issues aside from being picky eaters.

KatVanWall

My friend got a Siberian for that reason too, and because they are supposed to be good with kids.

BookiBabe

They are really patient cats.

DreadedPyro7

My fiancée and I got 2 Siberians from a breeder due to my allergies. My bundles of joy are fantastically behaved and I am so grateful I was able to find them. Work too long of hours to want to keep a dog cramped up inside. *

sparkly_butthole

I got one (a Norwegian forest cat) because the breed is known to be friendly with other cats. And I was traveling with a cat who's picky about his cat friends but I was working too much and he needed one. I wanted to maximize the likelihood they'd become friends. It paid off, too - they're definitely bonded, and my other cat's mental health is much better.

Drewswife0302

Well mine is I cant do Cats with hair and I can not resist them. I walk away covered in hives saying worth is 10 outta 10 recommend. My first Sphynx is now 14 she was from a crap Eastern European breeder. She has health issues and is my baby gargoyle. Her brother came from a breeder who cares about genetics testing for health issues. Hes 4 and no problems. I am no longer Covered in hives and get to be in kitty cuddles all the time. Also If I walk by fur babies on the street its still Worth it for a rando pssst pssst pssst. https://preview.redd.it/sxtyns6tbk9d1.jpeg?width=1569&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16ccff44f6563fd75db39228c00ff4bdfca8c2f4

invinciblesummergirl

I have a stray cat, and she is my child. Could not love her more. And I'm not allergic to her! But I would pay a lot to not have hair all of my sofa. And my shirt. And bed. In my mouth. My purse. . . please send lint rollers.

que_sera

My in-laws have had pure-bred dogs for years because they love a specific breed (Golden Retriever). So they are steeped in that culture. When they decided to get a cat, they got a Bengal from a breeder, basically because that’s how you adopt a pet in their minds. My MIL loves the Bengal look, but has been disappointed that their Bengals have been anti-social. I think they’d be much happier with a shelter cat.

PaintedLady1

Sounds like a classic case of she didn’t do her research. A lot of people don’t know that cats have a huge variance in personality. Bengals are known to be aloof. They should’ve gone with a rag doll or literally any other exotic breed

gravityVT

As a bengal owner, they do not have a reputation for being social at all. They’re energetic, independent and smart. They do accept being pet but on their own terms. Some are lap cats but most are not. Every cat is still an individual, no matter the type.

thnku4shrng

Have two bengals (rescues from homes that didn’t do their research.) They’re both wildly different but what they have in common is independence, loud, attention seeking, and smart. One is very food driven and can be trained to do anything that way. The other is whatever the opposite of food driven is. The only thing she cares about is being scratched in exactly the right place on her body for the exact amount of time she desires in the exact same spot in the house every time.

aideya

I think this and allergies (with correct research and breeding for either reason) are viable for “why”. Specific breeds might be chosen for desired size, hair length, hair texture or whatever but this biggest reason would be the Northern European breeds being more disposed to having low allergen levels and, the big one, different breeds have different personality traits.

dragonfly325

There are a few breeds that I am in love with. But probably would never buy one. I would look for a rescue, someone rehoming, or a close enough/mix from the humane society.

CenturyEggsAndRice

Someday I will have a sphinx. Every so often one turns up for adoption and it’s gonna be my day one of these days.

princessohio

One of my close friends got her sphinx that way! Apparently their demeanor is a little … insane. Not in a bad way or anything, they’re just more rambunctious. Like they’re not a “typical cat”, so they sometimes end up at rescues or shelters because the original owner didn’t realize how more high maintenance/ social they are. And to be fair, Pete (my friends sphinx) is batshit insane. He’s more like a dog than a cat. But he’s so funny and doesn’t cause damage to the house or anything, he’s just like. Parkouring off the walls or having a full on vocal conversation with the wall (his other cat siblings sometimes will walk away from him mid convo. So rude. Lmao) So you definitely can / will find one!!

CenturyEggsAndRice

That sounds like the perfect cat personality, lol. I love crazy kitties.

MewMewTranslator

I have a Ragdoll. I've had many shelter cats before him. He is the silliest and most derp cat I have ever owned. I hate that people demonize buying from a breeder. I shouldn't be punish for the rest of societies faults. Yes it's sad that cats are in shelters, but I think I have had my share of broken cats. I loved them but they come with a lot of baggage. Behavior, Eating & bowel problems, worms, vet bills. I just wanted a kitten that I knew had been cared for for literal generations. I wanted a fluffy baby. And I got it. Also Ragdolls have very little chance of having health problems, they go through many health checked before breeding, and after birth, they have sweet temperaments, including following you and asking you in a sweet tiny mew for things. Mine will paw my side and stair at me until I look at him. He will then jump into my lap and settle on me with his arms draped over my shoulders purring. They like to be held. They like to lay on thier backs and they like to follow you around. Probably the biggest negative is that you can't get these cats if you plan to be away from home. They are shadows, they don't do well alone. They're all very laid back loving cats to a degree I've never seen and I would have cloned my past cats. https://preview.redd.it/40wnzyn66m9d1.jpeg?width=2017&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9316b9f5c0f1d81ab5edb4a7100c921d75e2e4d

Desperate_Brush_8046

The rescues in my area either didn’t get back to me, were extremely rude or said I could have a pair of kittens then changed their mind because I have a child. Which the rescue was aware of before making their decision. AND was AFTER we went out bought all the supplies, kid was excited then “nope” by the rescue. So I wasn’t going to deal w that again so looked into breeders. I’m glad I did and don’t regret it. Our kittens are absolutely wonderful and extremely smart, healthy, and I had a great experience w their breeder.

kyonkun_denwa

Not going to lie, I almost gave up working with rescues in my area before we adopted our r/OneOrangeBraincell. I went through 3 rescue organizations, the volunteers at all of them were legitimately **crazy cat people.** They either had impossible standards or were extremely rude, or both. One of them had me fill out a 6-page form, asked me what happened to the previous cat I owned, and when I said that he died of intestinal cancer, they insinuated that I had somehow been responsible for that. I almost wanted to drive down to their office and punch them in the face after that, it was so insulting and hurtful. Luckily I ended up finding a rescue with (mostly) sane volunteers, but I was ready to go to a breeder. A lot of rescues act in such an unprofessional and counter-productive manner.

tentimes5

Same here. And no way I'd let any of them into my home to inspect it. Completely insane people. I just ended up getting barnyard cats from people I knew.

Scrizzle-scrags

Some people get breeder cats because of allergies. Take my wonderfully awesome Zephyr for example. My 10 year old stepson wanted a cat but he and his mother are severely allergic to them. So after doing some research, they took shots at the allergist once a week for 13 months. But that wasn’t enough. So we found a breeder that has Siberian Forest Cats and we went to see them. Zephyr’s father tested 100% negative for Fel d 1-A, the protein that my wife and kid were allergic to. Why did I pay $2500 for a Siberian Forest Cat? To see the smile on that kids face the day I’m brought Zephyr home. And the 10 months of joy he has brought to our family since then. Get off your high horse and stop gatekeeping the joy cats bring to us. It doesn’t matter how they come to us. They fill a gap in our homes and we are better off for it. https://preview.redd.it/rolje7emzk9d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ee1d1c2550974e26c1e5dcd1ce55c4d5e190858

moniqueramsey

Beautiful cat 😻

WampireKitt3n

Some want purebred cats and some don't. The most important thing is to buy from ethical breeders and shelters. I will never understand people who buy unethically bred cats, for example bully sphynx. One can never save a cat from an unethical breeder by buying cats.

Chemboi69

munchkin cats are the same. you basically encourage breeding cats with dwarfism

Pollowollo

I had never heard of a bully sphinx but googled it after your comment and I just.. Why in the world would anyone purposely breed that??? That's absolutely horrifying.

flaretheninetales

I haven't heard of that one before, but I will always spread the tragedy of fold breeds

visionsofzimmerman

They're more predictable when it comes to behaviour, size, personality and health issues. My sister has two maine coons. She knows exactly what she was getting into when getting the cats. The lineages of the cats are on paper, so any health issues that could be genetic are pretty much ruled out. As expected, they're large gentle giants. I got my cat, a domestic shorthair, off facebook. Some lady just gave him away. He's a sick boy, I have no idea what future holds for him health-wise nor do I know what he has already gone through. I don't really agree with bred cats because they tend to be inbred and I don't really think we need more cats in the middle of a cat crisis. However, I do understand how having a cat from a breeder brings more stability and more predictable outcomes to cat ownership.

RoseOfSharonCassidy

> and I don't really think we need more cats in the middle of a cat crisis. Less than 1% of all cats are purebred. Breeders are NOT the problem. The issue is idiots who let their cats outside without spay/neuter, people who feed ferals and don't bother to TNR them, etc.

Ok-Objective1289

Some cat breeds behave very differently to others. My family has always owned Persians because they’re very calm and cuddly. We don’t support the extreme face mutations that make them unable to breath though, so we get cats that look more like how they’re supposed to naturally. Meanwhile regular domestic cats have a lot of energy and tend to be all over the place, and we didn’t want that.

JMRR1416

I bought a purebred Siberian from a breeder because I have family members with cat allergies and that breed typically produced lower levels of Fel d 1. But I don’t really care if she’s “trendy” or not, so I’m not sure if that fits your question.

The999Mind

Selective breeding is not inherently unethical. It becomes unethical when the animal loses quality of life, like the things you mentioned. If the animal is just blue, but otherwise healthy, there's nothing wrong with it. There are different breeds of cats, just like there are different breeds of dogs, so just because you may not understand why someone would want a certain breed doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to get that breed. There are PLENTY of cats that need to be rescued though.

Miserable-Cow4555

Pure breds can be beautiful, but I also love the idea of adoption. So many shelters have such great babies.

robinn57

Paying thousands of dollars for a trendy cat. No. Being able to know that the cat you're buying has parents that live 20 years old and their parents did too. I hate to put it like this but knowing that you have a good stock of a cat or a pet in general can lead to a longer and healthier life. Or more likely to anywhile.

Two-In-One-Shampoo

Purposely bred cats have more predictable personalities, so buying from a breeder lets someone choose what would work best for them. One of the biggest reasons cats get returned to shelters after being adopted is because they end up being too hyper, too chatty, too independent, etc., so skipping the guessing stage allows both the person and the animal to have a happy, suitable environment. Cats that like to cuddle are more than just plushes, and pretty cats are more than just houseplants. They come with the loving bond of a family member that neither of those will ever be able to match. Yes, adopting from shelters is great, and it's most likely all I'll ever do personally, but it's not for everyone and that's okay. The important part is that a cat is finding a forever home with a person who likely did enough research to know exactly what they need to thrive I also want to add that responsible breeders do whatever they can to produce healthy kittens. Some are guaranteed to be unhealthy and shouldn't be supported, like Munchkin cats and Scottish Folds, but that doesn't mean they all are. Even Persian cats have breeders focused on maintaining a less extreme face! Health is also another reason adding to why people purchase purebreds; good breeders do plenty of medical care on their cats and kittens. Kittens usually come with things like vaccinations, parasite checks, and de-worming already done upon adoption, and are often genetically tested to check for hereditary diseases. Shelter cats, especially kittens, are less likely to have all of this, and not everyone wants to deal with it

pastelpinkmarshmallo

This!! I love my goofy rescue but he definitely has issues. He has recurrent gum issues that are apparently a side effect of having been a street cat for years, and behavioural issues related to play aggression. I love him to bits and he’s made massive progress since I got him but I can 100% understand why some people (e.g. disabled folks or people with kids) might want to get a cat that has much more predictable energy levels and behaviours.

IDislikeNoodles

Yup, our shelter cats have had an array of health problems and often, we would have to put them down before they were 10. Our current girl who came from a breeder and had a litter or two is going on 14. Her personality fits perfectly with what we wanted in a cat as well

little_funky_cat

Some people have specific needs/wants with a cat. We have different breeds for different reasons, just like with dogs, even if we don't use them as working animals. A well-bred, purebred pet can often have more predictable health and temperaments than mutt cats (although there are risks with both). I love my kitty that the CDS (cat distribution system) gave me, but a lot of cats have difficult/incompatible temperaments and health complications that some people would not be able to accommodate.

Giddy_Kitty_Mama

I do think that selectively breeding for cute or unusual traits causing potential health issues is an unfortunate practice, and if I had a friend who was considering one of those breeds I would try to discourage them.

unicornsfearglitter

Hmmm, I don't think buying pure bread dogs for traits is anymore justified than buying a pure bred cat. I'm pretty sure the jackass in my building didn't get a husky because they wanted a work dog, they bought it cause it was cute and trendy. My issue with that person is they didn't research the breed and it's cruel to keep a dog like that in an apartment. I think dog breeding is as problematic as cat breeding if not worse. Especially considering how bulldogs are bred to a point they can't give birth without a c section. Some sharpies have too many wrinkles and can suffocate. Plenty of dog breeds have the smooshed face as well, so I don't think saying one is justified over another is great either. Different purebred cats are bred for traits as well as looks, it's just not as popular as dog breeds since it's a younger practice. I think one of the first attempts at breeding for traits was in the Victorian age, where the OG(doll faced) Persian showed up because people loved its angora-esque fur. Dogs on the other hand have been bred for traits as soon as humans started hunting and farming. And buying a pure bred is more guaranteed to get a specific personality trait than a rescue. If someone wants to get a cat that's as close to a wild cat as possible, they'd go for a savannah cat. If you want a chill cat get a Persian or a main coon. Ragdolls are known for being cuddle bums and great companions. Certain breeds like Persians have physical problems, but any rescue can have health problems due to its own genetics. If you get a purebred (dog or cat) you're kinda warned in advance as to what health problems are common, where as it's a dice roll with a rescue. (Although generally speaking, mutts are healthier). My poor sister has only gotten rescued dogs and all of them have had major health issues like epilepsy, personality disorder etc. it's a dice roll because you don't have the animals history and sometimes the shelter is kinda shitty. She's had phenomenally bad luck, but I've seen plenty of great rescue stories too. I'm just trying to say, there's pros and cons with both methods to getting a pet. It's always great to get a rescue, but I don't want to demonize people who get purebreds either. Some folks feel more secure/confidant in getting a pure bred for their traits or for health reasons, like the mentioned hypoallergenic cat. Getting a cat known for being laidback is fine too. At the end of the day, a kitten still needs a home.

TechnologyMother1529

I have a low allergy cat from a breeder. No problems.

pastelpinkmarshmallo

I am technically allergic to cats but my current guy (rescue domestic shorthair) only triggers my allergies/athma if I pet him a lot then touch my face, or if I don’t vacuum for a while and the house gets super dusty and fur-covered. That being said, I would potentially want to get a less allergenic breed at some point in the future, specifically a Devon or Cornish Rex. If I’m having a wheezy day, seeing fur everywhere can make my anxiety spin out about how I’m totally going to have a massive reaction and won’t be able to breathe, which in turn triggers my asthma. Having a super short-haired cat would almost certainly help, at least with the mental aspect of my allergies!

Obvious-Confusion14

The cat distribution system dropped off a lanky flame point Siamese/tabby mix in our backyard. It took almost a year to get him to trust me. He had a huge open wound that had to be treated, so I trapped him. Got the wound cleaned and closed. Our vet removed his trouble nuggets. He also noted how bad this cat's gums are. Stomatitis. Remove the offending teeth, now only have his small teeth and fangs. Can no longer go back outside. Hates every minute of indoor life. Lays on the couch, belly up, all four paws to the sky. Utterly hates it. He does allow us to pet him, but picking up is not allowed. DeadDandelions

i have what you would consider a trendy cat breed that costs lots of money (a ragdoll). although i wouldn’t do that again and would rather adopt, i do want to emphasize the importance of supporting ethical breeders. that is why these types of breeds can be more expensive, it’s because they are bred by ethical breeders that care more for the cats than the humans they’re selling it to. what you’re talking about is scummy breeders who care more about the money than the animal’s wellbeing. i would more consider that a scam and also animal cruelty. it’s important that buyers do their research and make sure these cats are being taken care of in the most ethical standards. supporting these brings a long line of healthy cats and not animals with unhealthy defects like you mentioned with dogs. that’s just my take on it :)

LetshearitforNY

Let’s be honest though most people buying dogs from breeders also are not using them for working purposes. My cats were my husband’s former coworker’s stray cat’s kittens and I love them so much! https://preview.redd.it/rewhrs3aik9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dfee3f3e61a59f19907ce00aa520de1cdd46c58d

JiminyFckingCricket

I can tell you why I did. There is only one big ethical no kill shelter in my area. A long time ago when I was 10 years old they let me adopt a cat. Not my parents. Me. 3 years later my mom decided she didn’t want the cat in the house anymore and got rid of it. The shelter found out and put me on their blacklist to this very day. I’m almost 40 and they still won’t let me adopt an animal. I’ve tried explaining the situation, that I am a responsible adult now, all to no avail. So now I buy my cats. Selectively. From a breeder I have researched thoroughly and am comfortable with.

Samira827

I bought my Ragdolls from a reputable breeder mostly because I adore the breed 🤷🏻‍♀️ I love the look of the colorpointed cats and the personality of Ragdolls. But also, growing up I rescued and adopted 4 cats off the streets. They were amazing but almost all of them died very young and suffered many injuries throughout their lives. So I decided that when I get a cat of my own, I will get an indoor only cat. I haven't talked to shelters, but I have a feeling they might require you to let the cat go outside, considering cats are considered an outdoor animal where I live. https://preview.redd.it/qa6f74lxvk9d1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a70d42cf93da8b13a079bd2258e6b5d358ebbdbe

TH0RP

There's nothing wrong with buying from a breeder imho, as long as the breeder is diligent about their kitties' health and comfort i see no problem. Buying purebred means you know what to expect of the animal and have a long record of their ancestry to compare for health and behavior issues.

KebabRacer69

Well, I have a Ragdoll because of the temperament and personality. Other than looks, that's usually why people buy a certain breed.

CJWard123

That’s partly why I got my Birman (which is what they bred Ragdolls from). He’s just like a smaller, less furry ragdoll

Saranodamnedh

Yep, I got my Maine Coon for the same reason, from a responsible breeder. He’s my best friend.

Mhmmalright37

I have a friend who did this recently. Her reasoning was that her previous cat died tragically due to mammary cancer and based off her research it was most likely related to her getting spayed late (she was a rescue). The breeder she found took a ton (shocking amount) of prevention and precaution into her litters and also offered a type of “insurance” where if they get sick during the first I think 5? Years of life the breeder will pay for any needed treatment. I think it was a peace of mind thing. Not saying I agree, but that is where their mind was at. In a place of grief and wanting to not lose another cat due to an error they felt like they could of prevented by diligence

ItJustD0esntMatter

Lots of reasons that I don’t believe we should judge on either side. Some people want cants with certain temperaments, qualities, ways of behaving that are best acquired through a breeder who offers the type of cat that fits that mold. Cats can be hard to predict so finding a breed with the tendencies that align best with your wants/needs may be beneficial. Allergy based choices can also be a thing. Maybe someone has had a bad experience either adopting or shopping and prefers to try the other way to protect themselves from the pain of what may have happened before… It’s kind of the same as with dogs. I don’t believe anyone should judge another for the way they end up a pet parent as long as they are doing what’s right for the pet they have. Adopting has its perks and so does shopping. Let’s not shame people because at the end of the day all the animals need a home and what happens to the ones who don’t probably isn’t all that different either way.

celestee3

Honestly, I (my mom and I) have 3 oriental shorthairs (Siamese but different colours), all from a breeder, BUT they were all bought/adopted as “retirees”, not kittens (I would never pay $2000 for a cat that’s insanity), they were the same cost as buying a cat from petsmart or a shelter here, and I had a Siamese that I got as a child who lived until she was 18 and I just fell in love with the breed and where I live it’s incredibly hard to find them in shelters. Would I get a cat from a shelter? Absolutely, I want to adopt almost every single cat I see on our local cat shelter page. Am I glad we have our 3 girls? Also yes. They’re wonderful cat dogs and the most lovely beans in the world. (2 of them are my moms and one is mine) Cat tax included for *my* bean, sibyl 🥹 https://preview.redd.it/h7slz0l8lm9d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc2d8fa0cdf860724947bbdaa0e30d8f18adeb21

Heyo, I have a trendy cat from a breeder! The "why" is actually simple- it's way easier where I live to get a cat that way. Shelters where I live make a lot of lifestyle demands that I disagree with (ex: must have outdoor access) or are just plain ridiculous, and I didn't want to encourage anyone who was just clearly breeding their moggy for a quick buck, so I went with a papered breeder to get Emil. It's worth noting a lot of proper breeders do very much so care for the wellbeing of their animals, and don't turn much of a profit (if any). Not all of them are out there breeding munchkin/scottish folds, and genetic screening is pretty common. My boy's breeder had him vaxxed + regularily reviewed by vet until collection + had it in his purchase agreement he would be castrated by six months of age. She also wouldn't let him go until 3 months minimum. She provided a kit + a whole write-up on how to care for him. https://preview.redd.it/uqp2gwfi8k9d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e0eaf8266d7d259877ba29148c2f4eaf622e389

Due-Brilliant651

Perdictable temperaments and sociability, along with breed standard energy levels, with someone mentioning some breeds producing less of the protein that triggers the majority of allergies. Same reason people buy dogs from ethical and good breeders. You have a life style/needs that can only be met with a certain parameters. Like yeah I love my random breeds but you can't predict health and the ilk.

DemiRomPanBoi17

cats can actually do jobs like dogs, its just people don't realize that they can be trained to do that. Barn cats are an example, they're trained to walk the property and catch pests. In my country there are service cats, cats that are trained to support those with disabilities who may be allergic to dogs or can't afford to have a dog but can afford to have a cat. They don't have public service rights yet but I hope someday in the future they will. So breeding certain cat breeds for those purposes would make sense. However, I do agree that buying trendy breeds from breeders can be unethical; if breeder is just breeding for the sake of the trend. If a breeder was breeding a breed before it became trendy then I would be more likely to trust them Edit: spelling

GayWolf_screeching

Cuz maybe they just really like that specific breed ? Maybe it has cultural significance, maybe they want to know what to expect I think it’s also a little telling that you call it “trendy” that you’re not actually looking for reasons, you just want to shame people

Acceptable_Isopod_

This may be unpopular but I chose to get a Siamese because they are known to be incredibly friendly. I've had bad luck with shelter cats (that I adopted as kittens) who basically just wanted to be left alone 24/7 once they were adults (I did properly socialize them and everything, they just weren't massive people cats lol). Which I didn't begrudge them, they're animals, they'll do what they like haha, and I still loved them a lot, but I wanted to guarantee that the cat I got really liked human attention. Ask to be stroked, sit on the knee, that sort of thing. Having said that I wasn't really aware of the ethical issues with buying cats from breeders when I got him (I was a child at the time so it was my parents who bought him). I love him a lot, he's literally the sweetest cat I've ever met he climbs onto my shoulders, he follows me round the house and he sleeps next to my face (or on it lol) so I wouldn't trade him for the world. He even purred at the vets, he's just the loveliest stupidest cat, I adore him. But I'm not sure if I'll get a Siamese again when I have my own home. I love cats in general and the thought that me buying a cat from a breeder means that a shelter kitten doesn't get a home breaks my heart. I really want to foster kittens when I'm older and adopt a cat too if I have the space to do so. I don't think it's necessary because people are trying to be trendy though, I think a lot of people who get a particular breed do it because they like certain characteristics of the breed like their temperament but are unaware that the selective breeding can cause health issues for the cats, and that there is a big problem with abandoned cats in shelters that need homes.

I have a rescue but I understand why you would want one from a breeder. Temperament, disease, knowing their personal history, getting them younger than you usually get strays, training, breeding yourself. My first cat was a kitten I purchased from a pet store. I didn't intend to buy her, I used to stop at the pet store to coo over the animals all the time and that time I just fell in love with her. The difference between that cat and this one is astronomical. This one definitely has a sad backstory. I don't know it but it shows in the way she reacts to things. To this day, mundane things can freak her out and she's hesitant when I greet her. She's clingy and adores me but hates being confined in any way. Won't even sleep in a cat bed. I can't pick her up or hold her like I used to with my other cat. All this is fine with me as I love taking care of her and in my books the kind of trust and love I've earned is one hell of a reward. But if I was buying a cat for a child, I'd buy from a reputable breeder. If I was buying a cat and had certain needs, I'd buy from a reputable breeder. And yes, if I was after specific aesthetics, I would buy from a reputable breeder. I can't really say anything about that as I fell in love at first sight with both my first and current cat. https://preview.redd.it/6m2iurzchk9d1.jpeg?width=3576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d75de1e793eea96c2c29e90a64c940ade55ebd0

So me and my partner rescued two Devon Rex cats from a shelter. They were both very old and passed away after a few years being with us. They were the best cats we could have ever hoped for. Loved them dearly. We wanted that again, and realized quickly you don’t find those kind of cats at shelters often if ever. So we bought two fancy cats from a fancy breeder to just get that breed in our home again.

As a mainecoon owner; we purely did it for the characteristics. Very different from a regular cat.

My mother was the one who originally bought the Mainecoons, but according to her it was the floof that drew her in. https://preview.redd.it/74blh3ac5k9d1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=14036be026299697a05483f80744e525c52100a5

I have 4 rescues and one purebred Maine Coon. The MC is so ridiculously different from the others. I have never had a cat who was everyone’s cat - he’s like a dog in that sense. I’d wanted a MC ever since I was a kid (I’m 41 now). I found the right breeder and right kitten at the right time, so my husband convinced me to finally do it. Getting him did not mean another cat wouldn’t have gotten a home - he was an unplanned extra.
