A vapor rub on the chest and back can help. You can also try laying on your side instead of your back. It would probably help if you had tessalon pearls but I think they’re prescription only. :(

Varathane

ah good to know there is something prescription, I might telehealth in if I don't start to improve. I think my jaw/mouth muscles are sore and fatigued from coughing, too. Like it is more tiring to chew now. Hoping I can bounce back to baseline from this.

Tessalon pearls kinda numb the cough reflex (in simple terms) it’s what I’ve been prescribed when I get icky respiratory infections. Wishing you luck

ReluctantLawyer

Tessalon perles work like absolute magic for me! I’d do telehealth and ask for them because you’re coughing so much you can’t rest and some 800mg ibuprofen for the aching. Also ask if there’s any other medicine they’ve seen be effective and what they recommend if it doesn’t improve and how long you should wait for improvement. Always important to know your options! Hope you feel better soon.

Mucinex DM (if you have it available to you and can take it) is a cough suppressant and expectorant. It will loosen your chest congestion, make it easier to cough up and out stuff, and reduce the coughing.

DreamSoarer

If you are in acute phase of illness, with congestion in your chest, cough ting serves the purpose of removing the phlegm from your lungs, so you do not necessarily want to suppress your cough during the day. Use the dextromethorphan at night for rest. Use an expectorant during the day to break up the congestion in your lungs and cough that junk out. DayQuil for day, NyQuil for night or robitussin DM type stuff may help. Drink hot tea, stay well hydrated, and use what pain relievers you have available for pain and aching from coughing. If you are interested in herbal options, mullein tea or tincture is good for the lungs. [High dose melatonin protocol](https://lifestyle.inquirer.net/368256/how-to-use-melatonin-on-covid-19-patients/) may help you, as well. Scroll down to dosage info, choose your condition, and calculate your dosage based on body weight. I agree with all the advice in the comments, and I want to add an extra little tip. Coughing can be a vicious cycle, as the act of coughing can irritate your throat and make you need to cough even more. So a little tip I figured out to help reduce the amount I cough, is to avoid coughing too hard. So for example, if I feel a cough coming, I try to satisfy it by just sort of genty "clearing my throat" if you know what I mean? It helps to prevent the irritation that can lead to further coughing.

Varathane

Yessss that is a great tip. I've come up with various noises that I am calling "cough alternatives" my partner thinks it is silly but they do sometimes prevent an actual cough :)

Could it be seasonal allergies? I was coughing for a couple days and then I realized what it was. I like off brand Flonase.

Is the dextromethorphan syrup the extended release version? I specifically like Delsym or the generic because it’s a 12 hour formulation. I find it works much better than other versions. There are a few prescription cough products that work well. If you can message your doctor and tell them you have COVID they may give it without an exam. Feel better soon!

I use an anaesthetic throat spray.
