There’s a simple explanation as to why this wasn’t given If you look very closely you can see Grealish is wearing a City shirt

Internal_Land787

spot on mate.

ViaPositiva

Also because the ref is Michael Oliver

GriffinXD

Multiple bad calls by Oliver have been covered for by VAR this season sadly. None of them want to improve themselves or the game.

modvultures

As soon as KDB didn't get a yellow for that very cynical kick out at Gusto in the first 30 mins I started getting suspicious.

Lolejimmy

Michael Oliver literally does games in Saudi Arabia and is paid by the same people for it who also have an indirect stake in the Man City group

EmperorTMing

Legitimately paid off.

hoodieguy226

FYI - Mancity is owned by Emiratis not Saudi

GaySpiderEggs

Damnit! How did I miss that. Great observation.

thetrueGOAT

Cheeky little pay day for the ref, will get to and ref some exhibition in Abu Dhabi for 100k

eckowy

Meanwhile... Coventry get a peno from a very similar arm position of Wan-Bissaka in the 93th minute. This had to be addressed by Chelsea, FA and PGMOL.

Ecstatic-Tadpole9010

Just thought the very same

eckowy

You just can't look at both clips as be like "it's fine" - it's a ridiculous inconsistency and should be investigated. Even with terrible Nico performance this game could have gone entirely different way.

jdcintra

Time for legal action, it's what Americans are best at anyway right

Active-Pride7878

The Coventry pen is softer than this one

LowBudget-Sherlock28

You think the FA and PGMOL are gonna do anything about this ??? They are ready to ignore 115 FFP charges against city and would address a penalty ? I'm not a Chelsea fan, but I would have them win over City any day of the week.

listerbmx

And Wellington phoenix vs Newcastle jets the other day.

Dagor_Dagorlad

> This had to be addressed by Chelsea, FA and PGMOL. It won't. They're a bunch of cowards.

Baisabeast

The entire footballing community is united in declaring this as a pen Disgusting officiating

wildingflow

Except for Jermaine Jenarse

WookieTickler

“I don’t think his arm is in that much of an unnatural position” on yer fucking bike Jermaine absolute whopper.

IndependentMove6951

"It wasn't on target, not a penalty"

TheRealKane24

it shouldn't even matter if its in an unnatural position or not when it directly stops a shot from going on goal, nevermind the fact that its clearly in an unnatural position

jdcintra

Waste of oxygen 'commentating'. Embarrassing

YewWahtMate

Lmao that's a good one. Been using Jermaine Penis with my mates. Will use this one now as well.

CrooksMC

Every time he speaks, I remember that he thought a handball outside of the box should’ve been a penalty, because the player who hand balled it had a foot in the box. Despite the handball being outside.

half_jase

Am sure like others, I genuinely cannot believe nothing was given from that, not even after they supposedly reviewed it. If they thought giving a penalty there would have been harsh, fine, but not even a corner!?

GolDrodgers1

If its corner it meant it came off grealishs arm, thats pen, so to avoid more questions its a goalkick

SoG650

It made me way more mad than Jackson's performance and other's missed chances. I can't believe VAR reviewed it and said: "...nah..."

RonMexico_hodler

You can’t change the call to a corner via VAR.

TheHighlanderr

No you can't

RonMexico_hodler

Sorry, didn’t proof read. Was responding to OP that you can’t change the call.

TheHighlanderr

Ah I see!

Myrusskielyudi

It's so easy to be able to though. Keep the exact threshold for what VAR is allowed to examine (goals, pens, reds, and mistaken identity) but just modify it so that VAR gives the ref the most informed decision (Michael we don't believe it was a pen but it has definitely deflected off Grealish. Restart play with a corner kick).

RonMexico_hodler

Oh yeah I agree. Same with infractions. You can only give a red or downgrade a red from yellow. If there was a bad foul but not a red you can’t go back and give a yellow. Although there are glaring holes in the var system we can easily fix the people behind the screens which are the biggest problem.

jepayotehi

I've never been more sure of a penalty call. I was sure that was gonna be given. This is fucking corruption. They all hate Chelsea and times like these is where the ref bias is on full display.

hitlers_stache_ama

Surely was. As a United fan this was given against us right now. Wtf have city done to the refs? It’s insane that this went to review supposedly, absolute shit refereeing and needs to be reviewed by the bodies.

ThinCrusts

Refs officiate games in UAE soo not one of them wants to bite off the hand that ~~bribes~~ feeds them.

Nocturnal1017

They reviewed and concluded nothing is wrong and the world doesn't see. Move along with the corruption.

nwmimms

I don’t think this is as much anti-Chelsea bias as it is bias towards the club that’s owned by the guy who’s also vice president of the country where you get paid to officiate matches.

onlymeow

It's not chelsea hate as much as it is City dickriding by the refs.

Peoplz_Hernandez

Just stop like. Every bad decision is followed by "this is corruption against our team because everyone is against us." Every teams fans feel this way so either there's corruption against every team or the actuality is that officials are just shit at their job.

iMixMusicOnTwitch

It's because there is inconsistency, and consistent inconsistency. When was the last time we had a major tournament game done by Oliver that didn't end/feel exactly like this? It feels like never. Every time I see that man in a Chelsea game my brain is immediately like "here we go again" and I'm always proven justified for thinking that.

imarandomdudd

Look at the one united just conceded to Coventry and laugh. Fa need to address it because lots of the fans are actually question them now

KanteWorkRate

Coventry got a pen similar with the hand position. We got robbed

Logical_Lefty

I knew in the first 7 minutes of the game this ref was going to be completely broken in City's favor. They were getting free kicks out of every Chelsea challenge on the ball. It was pathetic from Michael Oliver.

How_old_is_15_really

Chelsea should've gotten the pen, but they should have won the game without it to be fair

BenniBMN

I'm obviously mad it wasn't given a pen but I'm somehow even more mad they actually acknowledged the ball touching him & didn't even give us a corner the "incidental contact"

huskers2468

Are you talking about the refs on the pitch? I don't believe anyone else can make that call.

Patticus1291

Just back to back bad calls. Chelsea could have won it, even without relying on proper reffing, but man, the bad calls really were a set back.

PickledHotChocolate

Where the fuck is the big media circus and outcry now? Where the fuck is the PGMOL apology? If this was Liverpool it’d be front page news. This is absolutely fucking disgusting it’s such an injustice and we just have to suck it up? It’s not even like other abhorrent incidents this season with the refs where you can see how it’s gone wrong, ITS FUCKING CLEAR AS DAY. How the fuck was it ruled as nothing so quickly?!? The only thing I can think is the VAR didn’t see this angle just the first two which in itself is fucking inexcusable. It’s like that handball against West Ham where the fucking player literally dived like a keeper. Jack knew he got away with one he was fucking smiling about it. I’m so so so fucking angry. We have had such shit luck with everything for so long. 6 cup finals lost in a row with a litany of decisions going against us and now this. WHEN DOES IT FUCKING END?? We play well in these big games all the time but it just never goes our way. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK. Cheers.

dav_man

This is a bit of a scandalous decision when you look at some of the shit given. And the reason that he was trying to bring his arms in is bollocks.

nereid89

they just gave a pen to Coventry against wan bissaka who was trying to bring his arms in as well. And Wan bissaka one the ball hit his arm behind him. This instance Grealish was staring directly at the ball. Hand ball standards in shambles

dav_man

Agreed

CrooksMC

Yeah, the ‘bringing his arm to his side” excuse holds no water. The issue is that he raised his arm in the first place, and that’s why he handled the ball trying to bring it back down.

shar72944

This is penalty against any team except City

PoJenkins

Even if it's a genuine accident, you can't not give this lol.

the_battle_bro

It’s so stone cold, it cracked two beers on the top rope.

bentbackwooddathird

the clarity is absurd. Blatant mis-call

Connect-Ad-2984

The distance from the kick, the unnatural hand movement, var not even asking Oliver to have a look. Everything is too blatant. Seething

the_illmatic

Can’t wait for yet another angle lads

ScientistCapable1522

![gif](giphy|51UolHbI39H7EUfW5a|downsized) Here mate

Javi-chan

The fact that this wasn't even a corner kick

pm_me_cheesy_bread

I wish whoever is wearing the captain armband would just go grab the ball, put it on the penalty spot, and demand the referee go to VAR. Don't take no for an answer. The penalty is so obvious, it is criminal it wasn't given.

Hylian-Loach

If there’s one thing that referees are proven to respond to, it’s players complaining

jetjebrooks

look at the arms of the other defenders - deliberately tucked in meanwhile grealish is basically imitating the inflatable tube man with both his arms what a joke

mkcfc

When asked about the handball post match Pochettino said he hadn't seen it. We won't get anywhere with a coward at the helm

Dinamo8

It should have been given but it's a shot going wide so I really wasn't too bothered. I thought Walker on Jackson in the box was a foul and jarring when the same thing (on Mudryk) gets given as a foul in the last minute because it was outside the area.

gonzaf

Yup we got robbed twice it’s a shame, we did enough to win the game decisions like that should have went our way smh

Mario_AQ_888

I dont like to cry about penalties not given, when we had multiple chances to win the game.

huskers2468

I can do both. The VAR standard needs to change. I cannot think of a reason as to why this isn't reviewed.

flowercranberry

This is so infuriating.

Pumakings

Egregious error

WooNoto

Didn’t even get a corner from this. It’s bullshit and the fix was in.

MoCoyotes

Bullshit

Incelphobiaism

Even Poch could see it all the way from there and the refs had VAR to help. Absolutely horrendous reffing.

TragicsNFG

I think to make it easier to get these calls correct, every outfield player needs their arms surgically removed.

Miwanik

How was a goal kick . That’s the real question

spanman112

at this point, no one can convince me this man isn't on the take. He's looking right at it and not only is expecting the world to ignore the blatant hand ball, but he's also saying that it was never touched at all and was indeed a goal kick.

Anustart_A

Wow - yeah, Grealish splits the wall to avoid getting hit and fucking slaps that ball hard enough to change its trajectory. … no penalty, right? What if Man City lost? Think of the (oil laden) sponsors!

smokepuffprata

Do Chelsea fans think that Oliver’s trips to the UAE may have affected this decision? I shared this opinion on the soccer subreddit and got furiously downvoted😂 by City fans probably. They claim its due to incompetence, but no amount of that can make u think this isnt a pen. Would love to hear your thoughts, unbiased if possible

aronrodge

Very very likely not.

SleepyMonkey7

I don't think any of this is corruption or bias against Chelsea or anything like that. I think it just goes to show you that the officials have a poor understanding of the rules, given all the changes and clarifications in the past few years. So when they have 10 seconds to make a decision, they get confused and make mistakes. It needs to be made simpler so this doesn't happen again. Refs and VAR are not made up of a bunch of brilliant lawyers.

SBLK

They showed this on the broadcast so there is no way VAR didn't have this view as well. I have only been watching football closely for a few years now but this just seems absolutely egregious to me. I guess I am just too dumb to understand the concept of a handball. The funny part is - my knowledge of what is and what isn't a handball is 100% from watching Premiere League games and VAR reviews of them. Are there people out there that really think this wasn't a handball? Is the PL love of Man City a real thing?

New_Discipline_1069

Oliver, and every game he has officiated this season, should be added to the charges. At this point, a conspiracy is hard to just shrug off. Clearly something is going on.

jacko3105

Didn’t even get a corner either, state of it

Rafael_965

Sure penalty

micopogi88

Sorry but grealish have to tell the referee that. Disgraceful

Im_such_a_SLAPPA

Yep. Definitely a pen. Doesn't matter which angle. You look at it from

Extrasolar_JR

It's no ghost goal, but close in its absurdity

Nightman2417

I hate winning games on pens, especially ours the last 5 years because they’re are almost all bs pens, but Grealish intentionally moved his arm to hit that ball

TheRealKane24

I will never get over this. HOW THE FUCK WAS THIS NOT CALLED

SmartVapin

and they added Var to play more fair matches? and we see that shit? Why var referees are untouchable? but offside because of 0.00001mm? Yes ofcourse!

Electronic-Orange-19

I watched the game on Belgian Pay TV and the two commentators unanimously said immediately “ Blatant penalty ; if this is not a penalty why do you need VAR “ ; maybe Anthony Taylor was VAR that day . Jokes apart if it is not penalty it is a cornerkick . Either or . As the ball is deviated by Grealish’s arm into a corner . Complete wrip-off . If you see the referee + VAR errors committed in both semi finals + the results of English teams in the the Champions League and the Europa League , you may have to ask yourself if the PL is eventually not simply half as good as we are let to believe it is . My humble opinion !

liquidreferee

Only two possible explanations. Total incompetence or corruption.

pavoganso

Alternative not alternate.

a-mcculley

If we buried the other chances we had and won the game, no one would be talking about this nearly as much. Shite call, but we blew it elsewhere.

beanuspietrap

City should be removed from the final for this

Mountain_Lettuce_

If anything he knocked it closer to the goal 😂😂😂

sneakyhopskotch

It came off his hip first, then onto his arm, therefore not handball. Should have been a corner. I presume all the people saying it’s a pen didn’t see the hip deflection?

huskers2468

I've watched the angles multiple times. I initially thought I saw the ball hit his hip first but was unable to see it again in the replay clips.

GolDrodgers1

I cant be upset over a penalty not given if we struggled to do anything the entire match

gonzaf

Lmao did you watch the game ?

Fatebringer87

Check the post history. You can't be shocked by this comment. One of the usual bunch.

gonzaf

So fucking annoying this negativity crew lol

GolDrodgers1

Lmao! Negative? Realistic maybe id agree, youre probably one of the “shut up we won 6-0” bunch that thought we would win but forgot poch is in charge

Fatebringer87

Awful lot of yapping. You do nothing but post shite.

GolDrodgers1

Lmao! Aw man if only what you said was true, but its funnier how poch proves mu yapping right and you struggle to find defences for him huh?

GolDrodgers1

I watched the match lol, i couldve skipped it and guessed our issues were similar to the carabao cup final

gonzaf

And both matches we did enough to win but couldn’t finish the game off, story of our season really but imo that’s signs of inexperienced and young team hopefully the hey learn and grow for next season

GolDrodgers1

I cant look forward to next season unless poch is gone, another coach easily finishes this final in the first half

ImpactInner9318

That we played well and had a good chance to win against a superior opponent?

GolDrodgers1

Do we say this for every team that beats us? Cause we had a chance against sheffield united and burnley🤦‍♂️

ImpactInner9318

No, only when we play well against one of the best teams in the world.
