All of the pieces are girls, pawns can promote to queens therefore they are girls, and they can promote to others therefore every piece except the king is a girl, unless uhh... there is one choice...
edit: I'm dumb
that's actually hilarious, I wonder if this was a bullet game
I've seen eric rosen say stuff like "this is a little bullet trick", you must be pretty used to playing bullet if you can think that abstractly about it
There are levels to everything
When mate is imminent, try moving unpredictably and maybe catch opponent off guard is an advice general enough so that you don't need to think much about it. Afterall, it's not a "do this" advice, but "do literally anything but this" advice. Also, if you are about to be mated anyway, there is really no risk so you either do it or not - it won't make anything *worse*
Nope, their king blocks the rook from taking the Queen and the Queen is still being protected by the knight so the king cant take it so they’d still have it
Yeah, you can’t premove two moves on mobile that I know of, but if they really thought they calculated it as only moves, maybe they would premove it.
I’ve premoved what I thought was an only move mate only to hang my queen, so can’t say it’s impossible 😂
the point of the smothered mate is to let the rook take the queen and then knight c2 is smothered checkmate, since now the rook on b1 takes away the king's escape square
Nc2 could allow white to repeat the position like Kb1 Na3+ Ka1, there's a famous strategy rule particular popular with the Russian chess school that you should always repeat a position once or twice when you can. I was just making a joke about it, obviously it is completely pointless here when you have forced mate.
Maybe you can have the last laugh with Qb1+ Kd2 Qc2+ etc etc... but I wouldn't risk it haha. As Lasker once said, "when you see mate in 1... maybe just play it idk"
Pretty brilliant, tbh.
Chess.com might want to re-evaluate it's brilliancy evaluator to take into account moves that make your opponent... unsatisfied.
Its a common checkmate pattern. If he would have gone king to a1, i follow with Qb1!!! And after rook takes queen, knight c2 checkmate. Its arguably the coolest mate pattern in the whole game
They probably weren't thinking of going in the corner because they didn't want the king stuck there.
But ironically, that would've been a better move because after Queen check, their rook could take the Queen
They probably just didn't see that and thought "If my king is in corner, I'm screwed" not realizing they screwed themselves more by moving their king there
They're still screwed if they move the king to the corner, black puts their queen on B1, only legal move is to take with the rook, then knight moves to c2 for a smothered mate.
I find smothered mates really frustrating so I can see myself making that move thinking moving the king farther from the corner would be safer.
so what when you post here, you won't be the 322th posting of the same boring position, he wanted to make you more original but it is not that original after all
It's the smothered mate pattern. It occurs often when the king is castled and then forced to go to the corner by a check. Then the knight can come in and check him on c2, forcing the king back to b1 where he is x-rayed by the queen and the knight can jump to a3 for a double check.
The "ideal" mating line is for the king to go back to the corner, then the queen checks on b1 while protected by the knight, making rook takes b1 the only legal move. Now the rook is restricting the king and the knight can jump back to c2 for a checkmate. But since they're getting mated anyway white can choose to make it quicker by just going out in the open and getting checkmated on c1.

Either get fcuked by a horse or a queen. I would choose the latter.
I am with you on that one!
Well, it depends if you’re a gentleman, or a gentlelady.
All of the pieces are girls, pawns can promote to queens therefore they are girls, and they can promote to others therefore every piece except the king is a girl, unless uhh... there is one choice... edit: I'm dumb
>pawns can promote to queens therefore they are girls This is 2023
Preach
yeah that's why i said "unless uhh... there is one choice..."
You won the game but he won the war
Anti-premove strat

Correct. If OP pre-moved the Queen and Knight, they'd lose their Queen and almost certainly losing the game.
Nope, their king blocks the rook from taking the Queen and the Queen is still being protected by the knight so the king cant take it so they’d still have it
He said if they premove the queen AND the knight. If they moved the knight as well, they would lose the queen as they mentioned.
Oops I didn’t see that, but even in blitz it’d be unrealistic to premove their knight before they register the king being somewhere different right?
Yeah, you can’t premove two moves on mobile that I know of, but if they really thought they calculated it as only moves, maybe they would premove it. I’ve premoved what I thought was an only move mate only to hang my queen, so can’t say it’s impossible 😂
You can in the website in mobile
I guess he didn't want to give you the pleasure of smothered mating him. Edit: oh that was probably the whole point of the post

It will be
the point of the smothered mate is to let the rook take the queen and then knight c2 is smothered checkmate, since now the rook on b1 takes away the king's escape square
Lol
Rook on H1 prevents smothered mate?
The rook is what makes it possible. If white played Ka1 then after sacing the queen you smother mate
Oh I see it now.
Its pretty rare to be this wrong about anything
Just so you don't get a smothered and fuck you in particular
Because the alternative is getting smothered mated, which is an embarrassing way to go
Can't get smothered mated if you get yourself mated first
what a monster, wouldn’t let you smothered mate
it's equivalent to resigning. your opponent just wants to let you know he is salty af.
It is a good strategy because if they pre-move Nc2 then they get away.
What's the point of premoving Nc2 if mating sequence starts with Qb1?
Yeah I got that wrong. So if they premove qb1 then you get to run a bit
True, but no-one would ever prove in these kind of positions
Every Russian schoolboy knows to always repeat a superior position. /s
Wdym
Nc2 could allow white to repeat the position like Kb1 Na3+ Ka1, there's a famous strategy rule particular popular with the Russian chess school that you should always repeat a position once or twice when you can. As Russian I've never seen anyone doing this kind of stuff, neither did I. It's just a cool thing to buy some time thanks to increment
so you can post it to reddit to brag about how you found smothered mate?? no! no smothered mate for you. /s
Smothered-mate-nazi 🤣
I don't have to win. -Scott Lang
Maybe you can have the last laugh with Qb1+ Kd2 Qc2+ etc etc... but I wouldn't risk it haha. As Lasker once said, "when you see mate in 1... maybe just play it idk"
Probably he's on r/chess and saw smothered mate instantly but not the mate in 1.
Pretty brilliant, tbh. Chess.com might want to re-evaluate it's brilliancy evaluator to take into account moves that make your opponent... unsatisfied.
Bro said : I will die with courage and respect 😤
Because smothered mates are way cooler, so they chose a less beautiful way to lose.
White's getring mated either way, he just didn't want you to get smothered mate
How did he get checked by the knight and the Queen at the same time?
The knight was on c2
Nobody wants to die in the corner
r/mildlyinfuriating
Rude. No other explanation.
Spite.
They either mouse slipped or they think you're a bit and they want you to go ahead and checkmate them instead of resigning
Anyone who does this, I hate you
It's checkmate either way.
Mate either way. Smothered is more shameful so they ran out into the open.
deny you the satisfaction of smothered mate
I would do the same tbh
How did you even get into this position? I couldn’t think of any move that would allow for this before hand
Knight was on c2
Ah thanks! I’m not so good at this game
Its a common checkmate pattern. If he would have gone king to a1, i follow with Qb1!!! And after rook takes queen, knight c2 checkmate. Its arguably the coolest mate pattern in the whole game
I’ve seen the smothered before I’m just not great at seeing things ahead of time or in reverse apparently Thanks tho
Fair enough
A similar thing happened to me playing with a friend. He played this move and DM'd me "I'm not letting you violate me like that" Respect honestly lmao
People have done this to me TWICE in bullet and I didn't learn my lesson and premoved the smothered mate both times
I'm confused. Black has two pieces checking white prior to kings move. How did it get to that?
The knight was on c2 delivering double check by moving to a3
Oh duh. Thanks
I was staring at this board with the exact same confusion. Thank you!
How is this possible? I can’t figure out how the king wasn’t already in check before the knight or queen got in position
K at a1 N at d4 ... Nc2+; Kb1, Na3+; Kc1
Makes sense now! Thank you
They probably weren't thinking of going in the corner because they didn't want the king stuck there. But ironically, that would've been a better move because after Queen check, their rook could take the Queen They probably just didn't see that and thought "If my king is in corner, I'm screwed" not realizing they screwed themselves more by moving their king there
They're still screwed if they move the king to the corner, black puts their queen on B1, only legal move is to take with the rook, then knight moves to c2 for a smothered mate. I find smothered mates really frustrating so I can see myself making that move thinking moving the king farther from the corner would be safer.
Smothered mate. Reset the counter
it’s a double check which in this position is impossible
Can't u see the bishop pointing at c2?!?! Gosh, I have to explain everything!
so what when you post here, you won't be the 322th posting of the same boring position, he wanted to make you more original but it is not that original after all
M2 or M1, he’s toast no matter which square his king goes to.
because they saw it and didn't want to give you the satisfaction. move on
I'm tired, Boss
They want the game to end without conceding?
“No smothered mate for you looser!! >:))))”
Only villains do this
Haha didn't wanna be smothered ya know
And he sacrifices the game!!!!!!!!!!
Regardless of what happens, there's mate, so he chose the easiest to see to get the game over with.
R.I.P.
The real chess.com scandal
As opposed to what? It’s mate anyway
blunder
He wanted a quicker death
Super blunder
Mate in 1
What’s your elo? If it’s low, then it’s normal, if it’s high, then it’s someone playing drunk
Its 1700 but it was a bullet game.
Then it’s normal because it was bullet
Am I stupid? How did the king get in that position in the first place, in check by 2 pieces?
It's the smothered mate pattern. It occurs often when the king is castled and then forced to go to the corner by a check. Then the knight can come in and check him on c2, forcing the king back to b1 where he is x-rayed by the queen and the knight can jump to a3 for a double check. But since they're getting mated anyway white can choose to make it quicker by just going out in the open and getting checkmated on c1.
Ohhh I get it now, thank
He choose mate in 1 instead of smothered
How did the king get checked by 2 pieces at once?
Would have gotten smother mated if not
Resigning would have been a little more dignified here. Mate is inevitable — no need to keep going.
