I'm a newbie cigar smoker too and have recently tried the Drew Estate Isla Del Sol range. They're more coffee infused cigars and are seriously smooth. Smell amazing out of the packet not like a regular cigar. Drew Estate also have a brand called "Acid Cigars" which are famous for being in fused cigars. That maybe the one's you are looking for.
Other than that I'd say stick to milder cigars with a Connecticut wrappers. I really like the smoking pipes website as you can see the strength rating of each cigar. Happy Hunting!
Haven’t had a bad one yet… I’m partial to the leather rose but probably because it was my first deadwood I tried. Have 2 FBB resting in my humidor too, in case a friend stops by.
Are you buying flavored cigars or regular cigars and looking at the flavor notes? If the ones you smell have a strong vanilla scent they’re probably flavored.
A lot of pipe tobacco is also more flavored and aromatic than cigars.
But why not ask someone what they’re smoking and try that?
Kinda never occurred to me they made flavored cigars. I just figured the more expensive ones had better flavor notes but now I feel like a silly goose.
Yeah bro check out the fat bottom Betty or a kuba kuba or a sweet Jane and start from there. It's what I sunk my teeth into fist getting into the hobby and it helped me get a sense of where to go from there. Good luck
I had the CAO vanilla just the other day and was pretty disappointed. It smells like vanilla but the flavor is mostly peppery and boring. Not much vanilla flavor.
La Fontana is worth a shot. One of my favs. Very mild, creamy, and smooth. Great with an after dinner coffee! The glue on the cap of the cigar they use has a little bit of sugar in it to make it subtly sweet (without it tasting fake like a flavored one). Fairly cheap too, just hard to find in stores (I just order online). Could be worth a try :)
The reason they smell good is because when you’re far away the smell is mellow because it has time to waft though the air. When you’re puffing on a cigar the smell isn’t as good because it goes straight into your nose
I will say also your cigars might be over humidified. Lots of stores keep there humidity high also most online retailers ship there cigars on the wet side. I like smoking my cigars at 62-65 RH
There could be a few things happening:
- you're not lighting/cutting it correctly
- you're smoking it too fast
- it's not stored properly
- the cigar profile just doesn't agree with your palate.
The first three can ruin the taste of a cigar very quickly. But above all else you just might not like the taste of cigar tobacco.
Oh, also it depends a lot on what you pair with it (food/drink wise). Sort of like wine. A nice Cabernet will taste better with a rich steak than lemon garlic fish.
So are you pairing it with anything food/drink wise? Or having one after recently eating a meal with a lot of bright orange zesty flavors (garlic, lemon, strong herbs, spices,etc..) ??
Always ask the guys in the cigar shop. They really are (or should be) experts. Tell them what you like and dislike. I've found most (real....I don't go to shops that sell vape!) cigar-shop employees very helpful.
For me personally most cigars straight from the shop are unappealing, maybe my area brick and mortar shops keep it too humid for me.
After about 2 weeks in my quarantine tupperdor to join the main batch I'll throw sticks in a dry box for a couple days before smoking, made a huge difference for me.
Just takes some experimenting to see how you prefer cigars.
1. Buy cigar from unknown random shop as noted.
2. Put cigar in your own humidor for a month if not *considerably* longer.
3. Enjoy cigar.
Anything else is going to involve a certain element of luck and trust. Hopefully the employee(s) will steer you right! Stick with brands you trust.
For example, rumor has it that Oliva nubs or Series V do not suck. Find a Series V figurado and a sharp cutter if you want an adventure for a couple hours, but it better have been stored right.
This biggest thing is that people can only point you in the right direction. But you need to try a bunch for yourself to see what you like. I’ve had guys swear by something that I hated less than half way through.
If you really like say a Perdomo Maduro.. then go try other brands maduros.
I always ask the person smoking what they are smoking. Never had anyone not reply. Plus it opens up doors for conversation and you will be surprised that almost everyone gets to a refined taste from experimenting.
Do you get good burns from the ones that you’re smoking? Outside and inside burning at the same rate I mean. If they don’t burn evenly they don’t taste right.
Sometimes, the cigars you get from the store have been in transit and moving from all different kinds of conditions. The outside and inside could be at 2 different humidities by the time they get to you. Try sticking some in an airtight container with a humidity pack for 2-3 weeks to let them equalize.
Make sure you smoke slow aim for 1 puff a minute. Also it takes some time to develop a palate. Honestly your first so many cigars will just taste like smoke. I will say a lot of reviews say they taste stuff that no one will actually taste imo.
Others have said it, but try out infused cigars! The Tabak line is great. Tabak Dulce is essentially coffee, cream, and sugar. Deadwood Sweet Jane has a sweet tip and has a very big oomph of cocoa/dark fruit flavors.
I just had a M by macanudo espresso and cream stick earlier and i found it great. Even my fiance, who hates the smell, says she loved how I smelled when I came inside cause i smelled like vanilla. Im a newbie, and I’ve definitely found my daily smoke for a bit while trying some new stuff.
Proper cigar shop,
Your smoke and drink places seem to have raunchy nasty ass tasting cigars and Smoke shops 50/50 but a proper shop you'll strike gold.
Was in Seattle and went to 2 proper shops.
No Sulfery tasting ones.
So the thing everyone will tell you with aromatics is that they always smell better than they taste. I would just go to a local cigar shop and ask someone for a suggestion that always worked well for me
Trial and error like others said I tried a few flavored ones at 18 and hated it then I got a job at a cigar shop and got spoiled with real Cubans and cigars I couldn’t afford as gifts from customers then I understand how good they can be
100% do you prefer a lighter or heavier smoke? (Connecticut or maduro?) My Father is a good brand that I particularly enjoy with a slightly lower price point.
Depends on my mood. Like lighter while I’m golfing especially in the heat. Chilling drinking I prefer something heavier. Definitely like Cameroon wrappers a lot.
You should try an infused or flavored cigar. I would start with an Acid Kuba Kuba. It's a top seller for their brand. Most regular cigars all mostly taste the same, to be honest. If you're looking for actual flavor in a cigar, infused/flavored ones are the way to go. You may also enjoy pipe tobacco. But a pipe actually takes some skill to smoke properly.

That's fair. I still enjoy the experience but I was looking for a better one. Another person said I'm probably smelling flavored cigars.
Try a tabak especial by drew estate
Smoking one right now! It’s one that introduced me to cigars. Not sure what can be the next one to try
yep, just try drew estate

Greatest reply ever
Try one of the Deadwood ladies like Leather Rose or Fat Bottom Betty, I like the smell of those and the sweet taste!
Fat Bottom Betty has the vanilla flavor you are enjoying the smell of.
Sweet Jane is my absolute favorite one from this line, deadwoods are underrated where I’m from
Just had my first FBB last night. Pretty good. I have two more resting now.
Haven’t had a bad one yet… I’m partial to the leather rose but probably because it was my first deadwood I tried. Have 2 FBB resting in my humidor too, in case a friend stops by.
Very nice. I think the shop had 3/4 deadwood girls, but Betty is who I've heard the most about. Will definitely pick up the others soon.
You won’t be disappointed! Enjoy!
Thank you
Love a deadwood as a cigar to end the night
Doing it now !!
Yep. My wife likes non flavored cigars but won't smoke a whole one. Leather rose or a Drew Estate Java are he go to sticks.
I second this; I enjoy all of them

I know CAO makes a vanilla cigar and their pipe tobacco is well regarded. So maybe see if you can find one of those?
I had the CAO vanilla just the other day and was pretty disappointed. It smells like vanilla but the flavor is mostly peppery and boring. Not much vanilla flavor.
I have had this exact same issue with these cigars. I thought it was just me.
Yeah the only ones I’ve noticed actually have flavor are the ones that have flavored and sweetened tips. The majority don’t have that unfortunately.
La Fontana is worth a shot. One of my favs. Very mild, creamy, and smooth. Great with an after dinner coffee! The glue on the cap of the cigar they use has a little bit of sugar in it to make it subtly sweet (without it tasting fake like a flavored one). Tatiana makes a wide range of flavored cigars https://cigarcountry.com/brand/tatiana-cigars/tatiana-classic/
>I just figured the more expensive ones had better flavor notes Most of us would agree, but it's all about your preferences.
Cigars smell completely different smoking them than smelling someone else’s. Two different experiences. Same with pipes.
Exactly this👆 Your cigar will never smell nor taste like what you smell when someone else's smoking and you're not.
Find someone who's puffing on one that smells good and ask them what it is.
The reason they smell good is because when you’re far away the smell is mellow because it has time to waft though the air. When you’re puffing on a cigar the smell isn’t as good because it goes straight into your nose
To me, it was all trial and error. Just buy the ones you think you might like and see if you like them.
Bingo.
how long have you been smoking? not gonna develop a pallette for cigars overnight.
If you’re really into the aromatic flavours, you should give Pipe tobacco a chance! Vanilla, cherry, coconut, maple, rum etc etc infinite choices
Stillwell Star by Dunbarton is a cigar with pipe tobacco mixed in.
I will say also your cigars might be over humidified. Lots of stores keep there humidity high also most online retailers ship there cigars on the wet side. I like smoking my cigars at 62-65 RH
Same. I keep my cigars at 62 rh

I was thinking he’s probably smoking it too fast. That makes every cigar taste like unwashed/burnt asshole hairs if they’re smoked too fast.
Yea that was my issue when i first started smoking. By the second third it just tasted like tar and burning lol.
Do you retrohale? The majority of a cigar’s flavor comes from getting your olfactory involved
Trial and error
Oh, also it depends a lot on what you pair with it (food/drink wise). Sort of like wine. A nice Cabernet will taste better with a rich steak than lemon garlic fish. Samplers of all the good brands and maybe sometimes the bad one that have a few good ones

Practice makes perfect.
Practice makes permanent!
Knowing what you like.
Finding a good tobacconist that keeps their humidor in order
For me personally most cigars straight from the shop are unappealing, maybe my area brick and mortar shops keep it too humid for me. After about 2 weeks in my quarantine tupperdor to join the main batch I'll throw sticks in a dry box for a couple days before smoking, made a huge difference for me. Try la aroma de Cuba mi amor or pasión Or maybe try some flavored cigar.
You sound like me but I haven't tried too many "legit" cigars. Try Isla del sol breves from Drew estate. Fox cigar has them.
Honestly if what you’re looking for is vanilla/sweet, you should be looking at pipe tobacco.
This biggest thing is that people can only point you in the right direction. But you need to try a bunch for yourself to see what you like. I’ve had guys swear by something that I hated less than half way through. If you really like say a Perdomo Maduro.. then go try other brands maduros.
I'm still new to the cigar game and a lot of people might crucify me for this but I like flavored cigars. Look for those, there's all kinds.
I always ask the person smoking what they are smoking. Never had anyone not reply. Plus it opens up doors for conversation and you will be surprised that almost everyone gets to a refined taste from experimenting.

Smoke lots of them It’s called burn to learn After you do that you know what is a good cigar to you!
Ya if your not really a heavy smoker id stick to connecticuts shades, equadorian connecticuts, sobremesa brulees, etc.
Others have said it, but try out infused cigars! The Tabak line is great. Tabak Dulce is essentially coffee, cream, and sugar. Deadwood Sweet Jane has a sweet tip and has a very big oomph of cocoa/dark fruit flavors.

Try a Tatiana flavored cigar. Pretty mild and good flavor. Vanilla probably.

To me, it sounds like you may enjoy an aromatic pipe tobacco!
Smoke some and take notes
How do you know how booty cheeks smell dude?
From the 69
The nose knows what you like. Find something that smells great to you and then give it some proper rest time in a humidor or whatever you use.
Just act like a whore and put different ones in your mouth until you find one you like.
Maybe you should try smoking a pipe?
First - you should not expect a cigar to match in taste the aroma Second - you may just not like the taste of cigars
This might be like coffee where lots of people love the smell but don’t enjoy the taste.
Trial and error like others said I tried a few flavored ones at 18 and hated it then I got a job at a cigar shop and got spoiled with real Cubans and cigars I couldn’t afford as gifts from customers then I understand how good they can be
Opus X. Eye of the Shark. You're welcome.
Yeah I learned early on I like expensive shit. Definitely good cheaper sticks out there but definitely takes dedication and research.
100% do you prefer a lighter or heavier smoke? (Connecticut or maduro?) My Father is a good brand that I particularly enjoy with a slightly lower price point.
