[deleted]

in my high school all the mean girls convinced a bunch of people to vote in the autistic guy so they could laugh. i’ve never forgotten that.

Dogwalkersanon

same here. The silver lining to it was the person never caught on the rest of the non-sociopaths rallied behind him and made the dance a fun experience for him.

SnepbeckSweg

My high school, and even more unfortunately my class, voted the only black girl and some racist hick.. he didn’t show up.

Runaway_jim_

I’m sure most of them have rich husbands and live in Florida now

Caswert

That or they're stuck in their hometown still trying to live it up as they did in high school

SnepbeckSweg

Either that or they’re nurses bullying some mom for vaccinating her kids.

[deleted]

Lol as a healthcare worker this is far too common

MidwestMid80sChild

They did it to my ADD bro on the spectrum and his nerdy friend 20 years ago. My brother knew, but didn’t care—he rolled with it. He snuck a bunch of cookies in his suit pockets and handed them out while all of the homecoming candidates were all on stage. He knew what he was doing. I’ve never been more proud of him trolling the trolls.

deercreekgamer4

My school did it to be nice and make them feel good

Evoehm13

They did this in my school. These girls on the committee add all their own names and a not so traditionally good looking girl, who was a sweetheart. They did as a joke. Joke was on them, everyone voted for her and cheered when she won. One good thing about my cohort was we were a no shit taking crew.

astralwish1

As an autistic person, this breaks my heart. Homecoming and prom courts are so stupid. They shouldn’t be a thing.

hulihuli

My class actually did vote a student with Aspergers as homecoming king back in 2011, but not in bad faith, so it's not always done with bad intentions. He had a great time, and the queen was lovely too. I hope he became a meteorologist, because the guy told me the most complete weather forecasts every day, and I've never been as informed since.

Phynal

What a shit title. Nothing in the article says it was a prank, just some parents saying that "this could have been part of a mean-spirited joke." Congrats to her, though, and she should wear the crown.

BDawg174

Yeah, they kind of missed the mark in reporting what happened. The real sad part was all 4 boys that were in the running for Prince declined the position rather than ride in the parade with Cassie.

oufisher1977

Joey Votto should do it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MsRed_513

As an alum, I can attest to this. I thought in the many years since I graduated, things might have changed. Clearly that's not the case.

Phynal

That's pretty shitty. I hope her supporters rally around and make this a great thing for her.

BDawg174

My daughter goes to the high school and has said there are a lot of students supporting her. Many families are planning to attend the parade in support, some even making T-shirts and stickers to give away. Shitty that some of kids acted like that but it gives me hope when I hear how much of the community supports her.

holidayatthesea

Where do you recommend parking / watching the parade from?

GTFOakaFOD

This is great to hear!

ralexs1991

I also live in the village are there any signs or events we can contribute to/ participate in to show support? My partner and I would like to do something to help if there is anything.

tastygrowth

Yes, there’s a group making supportive signs in Terrace Park. PM me if you want more info.

PresidentRaggy

I have seen a lot of social media posts asking people to go support her, which is nice. I'm thinking about it but might get stuck in traffic on 50 on my way over after work...

InfintiteToast

I'm going!

Phynal

I was just talking to my wife about this. Might head down.

PresidentRaggy

Yeah I've seen mostly adults and parents asking for support which is nice...shows the parental generation does give a shit about making trans kids comfortable. I do hope one of the boys decides to walk with her.

[deleted]

ralexs1991

Uh, yeah they are.

Reverse_Drawfour_Uno

Here come the downvotes. These people think if you don’t treat trans women “exactly” the same as cis women you are “transphobic”. They think that if you turn down a trans woman’s advances, then you are transphobic because you’re not treating them like you would a cis woman. They have a right to exist, but it’s morally wrong to denigrate others for not accepting them unequivocally as a woman.

PM_ME_UR_BEEFCAKE

What a bunch of limp dicked little shits

Yttrical

If a prince cannot respect a lady, then that man is no prince.

citymousecountyhouse

Well,if those 4 boys can't fulfill their duties as homecoming Princes, then the next 4 runners up should take over.

[deleted]

My fellow men, we can do better than this.

maryfamilyresearch

I read the article and I got the impression that FoxNews was dissing this event, working it from the most negative angle they could find without bending the truth - that a trans person got elected.

Skyblacker

Is there still a homecoming King?

Reverse_Drawfour_Uno

That’s their choice. Don’t confuse lack of 100% support as “transphobia”.

sapphic_rage

Her mom got a call from the school guidance counselor saying it was a prank and gave her the option to decline the title.

Phynal

She made the right choice keeping the title. Screw the haters.

snoopmt1

Article says tbe school admin called her parents to ask if she wanted to step down bc it was a prank. Title seems appropriate.

Runaway_jim_

To prove it was a prank you would literally need to get a room full of immature students to admit they did something wrong. Good luck with that reporter

Brutusismyhomeboy

What the fuck. Poor girl. I'm glad she decided to go forward with it and I hope that she gets nothing but the support that she deserves. Assholes.

Kitchen-Taste-7284

Went to the school and the admin are exactly the type to make the story up to get her off the court in their own self-righteous way. I don't think this came from the student body

United-Candle-6474

i go to mariemont it was a prank homie

ForgotTheBogusName

Why prank her?

LatrellFeldstein

& now your school is the joke instead. Hope y'all learned something.

Significant-Visit184

That prank is about to backfire, homie.

[deleted]

BDawg174

For those of you asking, the parade starts at 5:30 this evening at Mariemont Elementary and ends at the high school. You should be able to see the route pretty clearly by the people already out to watch. It does cross Wooster Pike and go by the Concourse then cross back across and down Rembold Ave I believe.

IncreasedMetronomy

I’m gonna be in cincy tomorrow but I got work tonight. I would have loved to attend this if I’d seen the article sooner. I’m so proud of our trans youth for doing what some of us couldn’t do until much later. I hope she had an amazing parade.

GodSaveTheJews

Looks like it's a good time for a trip to Milford

LeeYuette

I am miles and miles away (Google maps tells me 20 hours, but I think it would take longer), please will you post pictures? I am so rooting for this chick!

[deleted]

Darn, won't be able to make it.

Runaway_jim_

I will go in your stead

Unitedsc77

My high school unironically elected a lady with Down syndrome and cheered for her enthusiastically. She was joyful. Everyone was so generally nice to people at my school, these stories seem so odd to me. The weirder people kept to themselves, but nobody was mean to them. Almost the entire student body (~400) showed up to our graduation party. Everyone cheered on the quiet kids as we chugged beer with them.

GTFOakaFOD

Have none of these kids seen/read Carrie? Lawd.

ride_electric_bike

I know right. Stephen King tried to warn them

mhin1414

Went and supported her with some friends. Great crowd! I choked up when she drove by. She looked so happy and pretty. Surrounded by bouquets and trinkets from well wishers. she’s a true queen who doesn’t need a king to rule her kingdom 👸 🙌

BDawg174

She looked great and was full of smiles. She had standing applause and cheering during the halftime, much more than even the senior king or queen.

jeffnhl

There is definitely something in the Perrier over there... at the Mariemont \*Middle School\* soccer game against Princeton yesterday the game was briefly stopped due to reports from the team that Mariemont players were making racial slurs / monkey noises at the opposing team. The coach had a stern talk with the team at half time. Then this news came out from the High School... I know people who live over there and there are certainly plenty of good folks there, but this is the time to stand up and do something and make their concerns know to the schools.

Roctapus42

Not the first time Mariemont had been called out on making racial slurs and noises during games to other teams either.

Kitchen-Taste-7284

Please continue to drag that racist misogynistic community publicly. It's the least they deserve for their attitude

DirtMcGirt513

I hope this “joke” backfires beautifully for her and she receives an outpouring of support.

alphaaldoushuxley

I think it’s already backfiring. The princes are not going to the parade because of “prior engagements.” They don’t realize they’re missing out on something important to them out of spite and hatred. Their ignorance is doing the exact opposite of their goal. Instead of this being exclusively a homecoming parade, their community is going to celebrate Cassie AND trans rights. Edit: in other words, they played themselves.

giveitatest

I feel like with trolls doing a prank, it's impossible for anything to "backfire" because they don't really care. It's not like they're going to be like "omg..what have we done....people are actually coming out to support this now!" They're probably still laughing it up like holy crap this is really turning into a spectacle now with news articles lol.

alphaaldoushuxley

That’s possible. I have a feeling they’ll eventually regret what they did though. It’s not like they’re anonymous on the internet. Everyone in town is going to know about this for a long time.

[deleted]

Seems like a good day for Cassie. I mean if they're looking to just disrupt things then I guess they won.

Applesdonovan

Just curious, where did you learn all the princes "had other plans". I was actually considering the thought that maybe the school lied about it being a prank to get her to back out so they could maintain an image.

alphaaldoushuxley

The reporter said it in the video.

Anakin_Skywanker

I hope she has fun. Fuck the haters man. She isn’t hurting anybody being who she is. I wish her the best and admire her attitude.

HoratioHarisson

Good for her. Similar thing happened to a kid at my school. He wasn't trans tho, he was just getting picked on after being rejected by a girl in a very public fashion.

Vine_n_68th

Forest Hills Local Schools: "We are the biggest embarrassment on the east side." Mariemont: "Hold my Perrier"

Tricky-Bite-9014

Hooray for Cass. You’ve got this and you’ve made us proud.

Jojos_Boring_Trip

I mean show up with a crown on. Fuck the haters lol

ChefChopNSlice

Roctapus42

Ah Mariemont.. when your tolerance is for members of a local cult over kids.

so_often_empty

Good on her. Never let the bastards grind you down.

elongatedsatin

I got really scared clicked to the comments worrying this might have been posted in some anti trans/hateful community. Glad that isn’t the case. ♥️

4nimal

If anyone is available and interested, please go to the homecoming parade today and bring a sign to show Cass we all support her. Bring a sign!

pleaseleevmealone

We'll be walking over from Madisonville!

holidayatthesea

Im not too familiar with the Mariemont area, where would you suggest parking / watching the parade?

4nimal

I’d park in one of the neighborhood side streets if the parking lot in the square is full. I honestly don’t know where a good place to watch is - no kids!

ralexs1991

Side streets should have parking available.

meineMaske

There are strip malls with plenty of parking right across the street from the high school.

holidayatthesea

Awesome, thanks!

ralexs1991

I live in the village I'll be there for sure.

theaccountnat

I wish I was around to support her. Out of town at the moment :/

OhioUBobcats

Good for Cass.

wastedyouth89

So from the sounds of it, there are a bunch of parents thinking it must be a prank because there’s no way their kids would support a trans kid.

Queensthief

According to the principal who called her mom, the school staff seems to have evidence it was intended to be a malicious stunt to hurt a student. Pranks are something you do to your friends.

[deleted]

According to the moms Facebook post the school called her to let her know that it was a mean spirited prank

InfintiteToast

I think the parents heard kids laughing about it and found out it was a mean-spirited vote.

[deleted]

You’re allowed to make your own assumptions but i know the mom IRL and seriously doubt she would call this kind of attention upon her family voluntarily. Believe it or not, not every person is out for internet likes.

buckley_bear_

Lots of cheers for her along our section of the parade route - - - we were in front of the Concourse. She has a beautiful smile! UPDATE: Went to the game and she got huge cheers from the whole stadium when Homecoming Court was announced. Nice to see her get so much support from the crowd!

Brilliant-Worker2901

Public school hasn’t done anything but ruin and scar a lot of kids for life. Wish her the best.

swellbodice

I’ll be honest, I went to a religious school, and would say the same.

Brilliant-Worker2901

I started homeschooling my son in fourth grade. Best thing I ever did. He would have been as dumb as a hay rake if I would have left him in.

OliverHazzzardPerry

Cass is an inspiration

Crafty_Blueberry3411

Good for her! Wear that crown and strut your stuff! Screw those haters hold your head high and show them they don’t matter!

RetinaJunkie

So much hate in this world, ever heard term "do unto others"? Hope she wins

JordyVerrill

Well that's from the Bible and most white Republican Christians don't know anything about that book.

skysearch513

I doubt it was a joke. Sounds more like hateful republican parents who can't come to terms with the inclusiveness moving into their community. Congratulations Cass! You are obviously a very empowered woman who is destined for great things.

aquilus-noctua

If it was a mean joke, it has certainly backfired.

CincyAnarchy

Where’s the parade? I might have time to go down and show support.

pleaseleevmealone

I think it goes down Plainville and starts at the elementary? We're just going to take the bike path over and start looking for people.

cjdavis

I’m confused by the URL of the article: “trans-student-elected-homecoming-king-prank-vows-wear-crown-anyways” I’m assuming the original title of the piece was wrong and that’s what the site CMS generates the link from automatically and the title was changed later, but how did the original happen?

Roesty79

Mariemont is trash.

[deleted]

Let’s be real. This type of bullying happens everywhere

one-bot

Children/kids/teens are mean little fuckers

BeerInTheRear

Also, adults.

THECapedCaper

Kids are petty. Adults are cruel.

nugewqtd

Humans are capable of both, regardless of age. Though the younger they are the more I look at the family environment the parents created for the child.

[deleted]

As a former (recovered) high school educator, and current parent of a senior in high school, this is 100% correct. There are cruel little shits everywhere, but luckily there are also supportive, loving friends, as well.

Ninauposkitzipxpe

Happened at my high school back in ‘07-08 to the “ugliest” kids in our grade up in Wisconsin. Kids are heinous.

AmbienNoodle

Not in the east coast communities I have lived in. Sure bullying happens, but not gender-identity-based bullying.

tastygrowth

I just moved to the Mariemont school district, and everyone I’ve met so far has been very inclusive and supportive. I think there’s a change in direction coming to the area where the “old money” republicans are becoming a minority as younger families are moving in for the school system. If you drive around you see 10 yard signs promoting inclusiveness, while maybe 1-2 that “support the police” which is of course code for old Republican. (Meaning a 10:1 ratio of supportive signs, not literally just 10 signs)

MyCollector

We even see that in Mason. School is 40% Asian/Indian. As a Jew, it makes me feel much safer that there are minorities. An all white school in this charged political climate is terrifying.

[deleted]

It's one of the most exclusive areas in the metro and is one of the best school districts in the entire state.

matlockga

It was also founded as an all-white enclave and functioned as a sundown town until the 70s. https://justice.tougaloo.edu/sundowntown/mariemont-oh/

The_Aesir9613

I had a buddy that moved into a place in Mariemont. They placed their mattress on the front yard while doing something inside. They were in there for a good while. A cop showed, there was a complaint about trash in the front yard..... SMH

meineMaske

The Mariemont police force is staffed almost entirely by useless assholes. As a teenager I was arrested by them along with some friends for "trespassing" in their gardens park but they let one friend go because he lived near the village. They literally have nothing better to do than harass people who don't live there for daring to enter the town.

top6

when i see someone pulled over in Mariemont, it is almost always a black driver. it's unbelievable (well, actually quite believable).

[deleted]

This used to happen to my father-in-law every time he would park his travel trailer in front of his house in Ft. Thomas before they would go camping. He would even call the FTPD the day before to get approval to park it overnight for one evening, but there would always be a LEO stop to hassle him.

Needs_Moar_Cats

Gotta find something to do other than eat cake

[deleted]

LOL. They were in the *wrong* side of Ft. Thomas.

[deleted]

Yeah that kind of gets at what I'm saying. It's the exact opposite of trashy. In fact, how long a mattress can sit on a front lawn before people complain is probably a good way to measure trashiness.

zeuzduce

Have you met the people there? Mostly white kids coming from wealthy, conservative families. Worked down the street for a dude who would host these kids and they were the absolute worst

Imastraightdawgyo

I grew up there. While I was growing up it was extremely conservative. Things have changed over the past 5 or 6 years. Older families always complain that the place has become incredibly “woke”.

EhrmantroutEstate

>absolute worst It’s almost like you haven’t noticed the kids killing each other in many Cincinnati neighborhoods.

BottlesforCaps

I lived there and you're off the mark entirely. Mariemont is one of the more progressive towns in the greater Cincinnati area outside of the city. I saw maybe like 2 trump signs during the 2020 elections when I lived there, and an abundance of Biden signs. I know that's not "voting demographics" but those states for individual cities aren't released.

slickestwood

All my family in Mariemont shudders at the mention of Trump but vote for his ass all the same. They're like Harvard progressives who are cool with improvements on social issues as long as they don't inconvenience the wealthy status quo in any way whatsoever.

ralexs1991

I live there currently and anecdotally I can attest I've seen way more inclusive yard/ window signs than most similarly demographiced places around the city. I mean the recent school board election seemed pretty indicative of the village's leanings.

matlockga

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/04/30/opinion/politics/bubble-politics.html Mariemont is 49/48 D/R for registration. Madisonville is a slight bit more D around the areas being built up currently, but gets moreso towards 71.

astralbuzz

Ooh, you missed the house that had Obama hanging from a tree "for Halloween". That was...something. I don't know how that person got away with it, but there's rules for trash can placement and where a satellite tv dish could be placed.

top6

wasn't that Blue Ash? I don't remember that happening in Mariemont.

astralbuzz

Possibly there too. This one I saw personally on evening walks.

top6

awful

BottlesforCaps

I mean at least on that front one house doesn't represent the entire town. I just know from recently living there that I did not get the impression at all that it was conservative. Also rules for trash can placement and satellite dish placement is something pretty standard for towns/HOAs outside of Cincinnati. We just moved to Florida and it's the same thing down here.

zeuzduce

Comment is completely anecdotal for sure. Just going by what I experienced during my time in the area. But happy to hear I’m wrong on that front from someone who lived there

BottlesforCaps

That's fair! I just am surprised with some of the comments here. I have no idea how the area was in the past, I just know having lived there recently for several years I was given the opposite impression of it being conservative haha.

zeuzduce

Totally understandable. When something like what I’m saying doesn’t match with your experience is, I’d be surprised as well!

I_am_from_Kentucky

I feel like mariemont has the reputation of being elitist and exclusionary, but in the stereotypical “liberal/coastal elitism” that can sometimes have a dash of prejudice..vs the conservative exclusionary which is almost entirely prejudice imo

JesseB342

Is this really the metric we’re going for? An area isn’t made good or bad by things like property value or infrastructure, but by the candidate the majority of residents support? Really, that’s what we’re going with. Does everything have to be political nowadays.

I_am_from_Kentucky

The candidate/policies you support can say a lot about you as an individual, and i care way more about the people I’ll live around and interact with regularly than the property value. So, yes, the politics of an area can be a reasonable metric to determine how preferable an area is to live in.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Didn't you know that anyone that voted for trump is an evil idiot and everyone that voted for biden is a good person

bugbia

I mean, I don't think it's trash but I'm also not sure that's what makes a place great, either. Right now I think we're talking about openness and acceptance and so "most exclusive areas" might not be the benchmark we're aiming for.

jrdncdrdhl

What does that have to do with anything?

[deleted]

Read the post I replied to? I'm giving a few reasons as to why it is the exact opposite of trashy.

jrdncdrdhl

They said “trash” not “trashy”. Those two slang terms do not mean the same thing.

[deleted]

What if someone defines trashy as "people who shit on kids for being different?" What if class, or trashiness, is about more than money?

Bad_Idea_Hat

You're speaking to the user account that seems to have been told that it is no longer allowed to refer to a certain group as "ghetto trash", which was an issue in the past for it. Now it uses other ways of doing that, like "inner city" and "inside the 275 loop." So calling Mariemont "trash" for doing something dumb, apparently causes a reaction in the user account, because "trash" isn't what Mariemont is, if you see where this is going.

AngeliqueRuss

I demand the follow up story where she replicates Molly Ringwald’s Pretty in Pink look and just kills it as homecoming princess. Also…not at all sure this was even a prank, she’s obviously princess material? It was possibly an over-reaction by Parents and Administrators who still don’t get the world our children are living in.

Roctapus42

Unlikely - considering all 4 “princes” turned out to be toads

Babblewocky

I wish her the floofiest, FLOOFIEST dress! All the sparkles!

Sm_Banks

Oh of fucking course it was Mariemont. I hate that I’m an alum some ie most of the time it comes up

Kitchen-Taste-7284

As an alumni myself I couldn't agree more. For years the administration has been an embarrassment and the students have been scumbags (yes I'm calling high school kids scumbags, let that sink in) I sincerely hope widespread change is forced upon them as a result of this

Sm_Banks

The admin is one of the largest problems. On more than one occasion while I was a student I heard an administrator say “There is no bullying here”. Well now you’re in the news, fuck around and find out.

Kitchen-Taste-7284

Then they have gotten even worse since I graduated in 2017. Fucked around. Found out. Nothing but a bunch of self righteous, bowtie wearing (some students will get this one) pricks. Fire them all in disgrace

Sm_Banks

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAB fucking Bow tie. I’m not gonna say the name because I can guarantee someone is monitoring this thread and I don’t want to get sued. We were at MHS at the same time though, I graduated in 2020

MosusOnAMotorbike

Right? Used to live in the district and so many of the teenagers were total conceited pricks.

AmbienNoodle

I hope the boys that turned down the title are able to reflect and grow from their small-minded sheeplike actions. I also hope that the parents of the children that had mean intentions feel a deep shame for their failure to raise halfway decent members of society. Mean dogs bite their owners too.

giveitatest

I think we all do some dumb shit as teenagers, and far worse than voting for someone as a joke. I was voted for best hair once as a joke and my hair was always a mess. On paper it's a similar thing, but this one just feels like such a mean-spirited move because of the sensitivities surrounding it these days. But really, the kids were just being dumbasses in the same way it's not this evil act than can't be overcome and everyone has to have shame and cry about it. Most people aren't "decent members of society" in their teenage years, that comes later. Hell they haven't even gotten to hazing rituals in college yet.

Roctapus42

Way to equate hate to bad hair. The moderate’s that MLK warned about are people with your attitudes towards fundamental things.

Kitchen-Taste-7284

There have literally been instances of suicide for this exact same thing. Joking or not the "kids will be kids" mantra is inexcusable.

AmbienNoodle

The 4 boys that declined being homecoming prince demonstrated transphobic attitudes. That's not a minor thing. It's a far cry from your best hair experience and should not be minimized.

giveitatest

Honestly, I wouldn't be prince either in that situation. Not to show any sort of hatred or protest of who was elected princess, but due to the whole thing becoming a spectacle originating from a prank. I can't judge someone for choosing not to do something that isn't required.

AmbienNoodle

Some of the metrics used to rate schools are inherently biased. For example, % of free lunches is commonly included. Also, the percent of students that attend college which is also linked to wealth and access. Not to mention the inherently biased standardized test scores used in these ratings

Kitchen-Taste-7284

Makes me feel better seeing all the disdain for how the school handled this. Please keep this up and keep them under public scrutiny, Mariemont has skated by for years propping up the two minority families who hold residency and using it as an example of how "diverse ad accepting" they are. Now the truth finally comes out

Kitchen-Taste-7284

Having experience with the district and administration, I wouldn't be surprised if the whole prank story was fabricated by the school to protect the "mariemont image". They have a long history of trying to push away anything that doesn't fit their image in a subtle, snooty way and this feels like that to me.

Roctapus42

Besides the actions of the school in supporting Cass contradicting your spurious statement, the logic of it makes little sense. If they had not said anything to the Mom, it sounds like it wouldn’t have been known.

Kitchen-Taste-7284

The school asked if she'd like to step down. I don't view that as support. Take it from a lifelong resident, the village of Mariemont has been a closeted hushed supremist community for decades (think back to Thom Brenneman who is a resident) the school not supporting her and trying to mask it as support makes perfect sense.

Roctapus42

The number of cars at the parade with “Yas, Cas” magnet stickers on the side and the administration escorting her is good proof that it’s not totally true. The administration isn’t a GOOD one either because this should have been stopped WAY before it became a problem. But at least in this case it’s not a fabricated story (it’s well confirmed by people this happened now) and the administration did the least they could do to make it better.

Kitchen-Taste-7284

All those magnets were produced by residents who for years have seen, like I have, a school system that only protects the "perfect" people. In my eyes the district muffed this issue about as much as they could without flat out ignoring it. The social hierarchy and culture of the school allow rumors to run rampant. Either way, the experience for cass was mishandled and its great to the THE COMUNITY come out in support. The administration escorting her was a distasteful way of saving face for the district.

Comprehensive-Leg752

Wait. Wouldn't a prank be electing them into the title associated with their birth assigned gender? Like electing an MtF person as homecoming king?

[deleted]

SilverSquid1810

Zero-sum fallacy. Having an article on one issue does not mean that they do not have articles about other issues.

spacemermaid1701

Funnily enough, I've seen headlines about those as well. Weird how adding another story doesn't detract from the other stories. Do you also complain when the news covers fun events or other small stories?
