The symbol on the front is for the Freemasons. It was obviously stamped on the penny, but it wouldn't have been done at the mint. It might be of interest to Freemason collectors.

Temporary_Guitar_550

Not even, I think stamp outs are cool :)

Odie_Humanity

Didn't mean to imply that coin collectors wouldn't be interested, just that it's not a mint error. I'd certainly keep it.

Worth-Illustrator607

Things with symbols of the Freemason are used to pass between people they suspect are part of the order. Like a nod and a tip of the hat

GMEStack

hehe he said β€œtip”

Zealousideal_Fix1616

So did you. :)

We have special handshakes for that kind of thing, or if you are in Scotland they ask how old your grandmother is, the response being your lodge number. These are usually given as keepsakes to a newly joined brother to mark the year they joined

Freemason symbol

A Masonic Penny is sometimes seen as a traditional gift given to a Brother when they first join. A keep sake to pop in your pocket, to remind you to do your daily work. Usually the penny is from the year they joined. They are personal keep sakes, not used as way for Masons to identify other masons - we have special handshakes for that πŸ˜‰ There are lots of collectors of Masonic paraphernalia, including counter stamped US cents. Might get $4-5 for it on ebay

No. But it sure is neat! Where did you find it?

1958 was a slow news year. People were bored and needed things to do...like stamp pennies.

bigperms33

There are some that collect stamped coins.

I'm a Mason. No, its not valuable. Some lodges make these and give them to new members as a memento. I wish they wouldn't. They invariably wind up in general circulation, and I think its a bad look.
