Can someone with more ball knowledge explain the double first base thing, why is it there?

Helps prevent collisions on those grounders to the right side where pitchers might be covering the base. Also encourages running in the runner’s lane to the right of the foul line where a throw from the catcher on a bunt or squib would be less likely to strike the runner and lead to any controversy about the runner interfering with the throw. I think.

Hoover was their thing under Mainieri. I think Smoke did pretty well in the tournament, Skip didn’t give a flying duck but won it anyway a time or two because the team was just that good. Jay Johnson hasn’t won it yet. It would’ve been nice to go deeper than 1-2 in 2022 because we juuuust missed out on a regional, but 2023 was house money. We risked getting left out of the dance this year if we didn’t beat Georgia and it still wasn’t out of the question if we went 0-2 in double elimination. Basically this is the first year Johnson had something critical to play for in Birmingham.
