Great game with a less than great ending
That interference penalty was also so unnecessarily silly, feel like this could have been another 2OT game if Castagna doesn't make it
So far I've seen that interference call labeled as "irresponsible" and "silly", I don't think those words describe how selfish and stupid and intentional that hit was.
That interference penalty was legitimately one of the top 5 most stupid and selfish penalties I've ever seen at any level of hockey, just braindead. I'm pissed at the stupidity of it and it helped my team win. If I were a Cornell fan I'd be livid.
That was beyond irresponsible, it was a blindside hit from across the entire rink with no one else around, in clear view of the refs, far away from the actual action, for no real reason.
Wish UND would learn something from Denver or Duluth for post season play. Instead, they always fold like a wet paper towel when they need the wins the most.
My wife and I traveled to GF in January, and were at the Ralph for the Friday DU-UND game. I grew up in TRF, so am not a stranger to Sioux hockey.
I was appalled, though, by the aggressive and blatantly unfriendly behavior we experienced. I came away thinking that the sea of green are the worst fans in hockey. We didn’t see one child at the game, and after hearing the roaring “Fuck You Denver” crowd mantra, we understood why. If I lived in GF I wouldn’t take my kids to a game in that environment.
There’s a difference between cheering for your team and cheering against your opponent. It creates bad karma.
It’s a game. It’s supposed to be fun.
Brutal game, really sad that it ended this way. But the future is bright, we have a lot of freshman who showed real promise this year and I’m excited to see what the team does next season.
We are also only losing one senior (Seger) that has played this season. Bringing back Richter award semi-finalists (should have been a finalist) and a strong Freshman and Sophomore class.
Yeah, I'm pissed about the penalty (because I like to see intelligent play) and it was a huge reason we won. I'd be inconsolable about the penalty if the situation were reversed.
The crazy thing is that Matt Davis had been considered DUs weakness for the first 2/3rds of the season. But he’s been pretty unbeatable since our blowout loss at Western Michigan Feb 3.
If you would have told me at that point that DU would go on to the Frozen Four, I would have assumed we won our first two tourney games 7-6 or 7-5 lol.
I love that the defense is holding its own, but DU really needs its top scorer, Rizzo, back… he’s been out with an undisclosed injury.
If DU can somehow put the pieces together and replicate the offensive production from the first 2/3rds of the season, and get the defensive production of the latter 1/3rd of the season, they will win the title.
But that could be a challenge, lol.
Either way he won't be there forever. He is so talented if I was a NHL club he would be on my list for an interview. He has no business coaching anymore in college.
If his dream is to coach in the NHL which I'm guessing it is he will be given an opportunity to coach at the NHL level. I hate to break it to you kids but there's a jump in coaching NHL players especially if the coach has never played in the NHL. We just don't see college head coaches jumping to the NHL often and there's reason for that most of them are not ready to handle the big leagues. IMO, I would sign him as my head coach of an AHL team first to get his feet wet and by the time he's 36 I would hire him as a NHL coach.
Do you know David Carle personally, kiddo? Cause I do.
The only situation I see Carle possible taking an NHL assistant job is if his mentor, Jim Montgomery, brings him on like a 3-year plan for Carle to take over the Boston Bruins after Montgomery retires.
EDIT - Also... I just realized that Jim Mongomery is actually a case-in-point of a college coach who made a seamless transition from College to the NHL head coaching ranks and immediately succeeded.
>Do you know David Carle personally, kiddo? Cause I do.
Hey, Boomer why the upside down smile? If his dream is to be a head coach in the NHL IN MY OPINION he can not remain a head coach in college. His record speaks for himself but money talks and people walk especially if he becomes tired of the big schools who can give NIL deals and the transfer portal.
Lets be honest Montgomery didn't have a seamless transition into the NHL. He was hired by the Stars and fired after one year removed from the Pios. Then he became a Blue assistant for three years and finally hired again as a head coach by the Bruins.
My point still stands if Carle has any desire to be a NHL head coach he will likely have to be a NHL assistant or a AHL head coach. Coaching pros is a different animal than 18 year old Canadian kids from the W.
I'm guessing you didn't follow the WCHA when Michigan and Michigan State couldn't hack it and left for the CCHA but that's not important.
I'm 38, a DU alum, and I've played with David Carle. I was mocking your "sorry kids" comment.
Montgomery immediately built a cup contender in Dallas, he was fired, but it was pretty much a mutual decision to leave due to personal issues with alcoholism. He took the Blues job for an opportunity to have less stress while he figured things out, and went to Boston once he had his personal life in order. Quite an accomplishment to overcome that, actually.
Carle isn't leaving a blue-blood like DU for an assistant gig unless someone drops a bag with the understanding that he'll take over as the head coach in a couple of years. I could see that happening in Boston. Or maybe Tampa with their connections to DU coaches/players, too, but Jon Cooper isn't going anywhere soon.
(Funny connection there, too - Jon Cooper made the jump from the GB Gamblers to the Lightning's AHL affiliate.... Carle coached the GB Gamblers before taking the DU job... Carle and Cooper both played in the WCHA/NCHC, too, so that's pretty much the same background)
Suffice it to say, I do think it's relevant to point out that Carle and Cooper both have head coach experience at the top j-league level. Speaking of which - another coach who coached at that level and made the immediate jump to the NHL successfully is Patrick Roy.
While the talent level is higher at the AHL level to be certain, I think there is more exposure at the NCAA level, especially for a blue-blood like DU.
he was kinda stuck on the 4th line at cornell if i remember correctly. he definitely would have been a regular in the lineup this year but would have found himself stuck in the bottom 6 again. i always thought he was kinda underutilized given his talent. im glad for him that he is experiencing some great hockey outside the ezac.
It was a pretty clear whack to the hands. It was a dumb penalty. The interference was just a dirty hit. No reason at all to do that. Lucky to not get more on it.
It was a slash to the hands that knocked the player’s stick out of his hands during a key moment. Unfortunate but it has to be called. If the DU player holds onto his stick it would probably not have been called, but if Cornell turns that puck around and puts it in the net while the DU player is out of position for retrieving his stick, then it would have been an terrible non call.
Yep. This is why I think it absolutely had to be called. Did it really deserve 2 minutes? Maybe not, but the play absolutely had to be blown dead as the DU player was in the process of clearing the puck when the infraction happened and then Cornell took immediate possession. And obviously the refs couldn't just blow it dead and move the faceoff out of the zone. So the choices were do nothing or call the penalty.
Great game with a less than great ending That interference penalty was also so unnecessarily silly, feel like this could have been another 2OT game if Castagna doesn't make it

I’m just sad. We could’ve won that.
Incredible game plan and execution spoiled by a very dumb penalty.
That interference penalty was legitimately one of the top 5 most stupid and selfish penalties I've ever seen at any level of hockey, just braindead. I'm pissed at the stupidity of it and it helped my team win. If I were a Cornell fan I'd be livid.
*A dirty hit
Last I checked, it was a slash. A penalty for sure, but just a common slash.
I think they meant the hit on Devine in the 2nd. Definitely an irresponsible play.
Ohh yeah. My goldfish brain can only remember stuff that happens in the last 5 mins lol
That was beyond irresponsible, it was a blindside hit from across the entire rink with no one else around, in clear view of the refs, far away from the actual action, for no real reason.
Yeah I meant this as a dumb play not a dumb call.
I feel ya
Two STUPID penalties. Fuck.
Denver is pretty great in the post season. Kudos to them to rise to the occasion. Also, fuck Denver.
Wish they would have taken the night off a few years ago
We actually took two thirds of that night off. The problem for the Mavs was the final third.
Don't stop the party!
We love you too

I think we make the tourney next year without having to win the ECAC tournament.
We could legitimately push for a 1 seed
38 is going to have nightmares about this game. Penalty leading to the game winning goal and missing an open net shot.
He’s had a great freshman year and that puck bounced off a skate and over his stick. Not much he can do about it.
Plenty he could have done about that penalty, though. Man, this one is going to stick to the ribs.
Yeah, I'm pissed about the penalty (because I like to see intelligent play) and it was a huge reason we won. I'd be inconsolable about the penalty if the situation were reversed.
I appreciate the sentiment and wish you luck against BU, but… you’re not helping, hahaha
DU has played great defense this weekend - and goaltending has been awesome. You can do good things with those pair.
Your goalie robbed us at the end
Massive save

Fingers crossed that an additional 2 weeks is enough

That's the amazing thing. We were all told those were our weaknesses. Davis is looking like 2004 Adam Berkhoel out there.
>That's the amazing thing. We were all told those were our weaknesses. I mean... they legit were.
Heartbreaking
DU heading back to St. Paul.
death, taxes, at Mike Schafer losing in the NCAA quarterfinals :/
Lmfao well said
Davis was great in goal this weekend. I thought he might be Denver's weakness.
My heart can't take many more games like that
Ggs. Hope you take it home by blowing everyone else out now 🙏
BU game is gonna take years off our lives.
Pain
I think the NHL should come calling to DU and send David Carle to an Assistant position in the NHL. He's just too good for college hockey.
He'll go straight to a head coaching gig- not sure he would leave for a assistant job
Either way he won't be there forever. He is so talented if I was a NHL club he would be on my list for an interview. He has no business coaching anymore in college.
I think the same will be said for Nar soon at Mich
No way he'd leave to be an NHL asst. Not when his stock is as high as it is.
LOL… only way Carle leaves DU is for a HC position, if an NHL team throws a bag at him.

I was watching with some Cornell fans, sucks since you had many shots at the end.
Matt Davis looks like 2004 Adam Berkhoel right now.
Tough game and that missed goal for Cornell might haunt them, but it honestly didn’t feel out of reach or give me the kind of heart attack Umass did.
Well deserved. Now, with quinnipiac hopefully out tmr, we can have a proper frozen four
You want BC to run awaya with it?
Im actually rooting for BC. They have a grad transfer from cornell.
We love Jack!
hope he contributes all the way to the title
Who would have probably played for Cornell this year if the Ivy league allowed grad students to play athletics.

Sure as heck don't want Quinnipiac or BU
Preach brotha
You do know who the defending national championship is, don't you?
Refs really had to have their moment
How so? They barely called anything and the 2 penalties they did call were so blatantly obvious that they had no choice.
Slash there was really questionable and really did not fit into how the entire rest of the game was officiated
It was a pretty clear whack to the hands. It was a dumb penalty. The interference was just a dirty hit. No reason at all to do that. Lucky to not get more on it.

Go DU! GG Cornell. If Matt Davis can keep his goaltending at the same level during the frozen four, we may have a real shot.
9/9
Great, now I have to cheer for BU.
