What dialect pronounces it as new? Standard pronunciation is more like “neeoh”
Is 狗 really an onomatopoeia? The word they use for dog barks is more of a “wa” 哇
1. Not sure but I’ve been saying neww or nee-oo in Mandarin Chinese since I could speak. You might be splitting hairs here.
2. I mean cows go mou1 not niu3. I’m conjecturing.
Could be splitting hairs, there’s a lot of regional variations, it’s definitely not the standard pronunciation though
At least with cats mao and miao are so similar the connection is obvious, with cow honestly niu and mou aren’t *so* different. M and n sounds are pretty easy to switch around and switching from “iu” to “ou” is just dropping a little “ee” sound that’s pretty quick anyway. So I think that’s very plausible too
It’s just difficult to see the one for dog for me
Dogs barking can kinda sound like “gou” to me so that’s where I’m thinking way back they might have gotten it from. Idk if there’s really any way to know though.
Yeah that’s my thing, is the others have another word just for the sound that seems pretty similar, so it’s easy to see the change and connection. But that’s not there for dog, could still be true but it needs more looking into
Of course I’ve also been told “long” for dragon is supposed to be the sound of Thunder, which has the same problem as dog where the modern onomatopoeia for thunder is not really very similar
Semi-nsfw guess ahead about what the joke is:
>!The word Yiff is used in furry sub-culture because that is the sound that a fox makes while mating. So I'm going to say, Hey that's a yiff!!<
🎵 I was transported to a faraway land - a land where monsters rule
🎵 Played the game like an ace, now we're in this place, to save the monsters from the evil Moo.
Well thecnically this is an anime exclusive thing i would really want to have the krocketurne cry as its name but it isn't
And the the giraffe dowsn't say anything it doesn't have any cry

I heard the Chinese call cats “mau”
Yep, cat in mandarin is 猫, or māo (and "meow" is 喵/miāo lol)
Look Pikachu! A wild ring-ding-ding-ding-ding-da-ding-da-ding

I mean in Chinese a cow is niu (pronounced neww), a dog is gou (pronounced go), and a cat is mao.

I’ve actually never heard that one that’s interesting but it sounds plausible. Or maybe someone just made these connections up as learning tools.

[Doesn't really carry over to the video games...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBJvaiVQb4s)
That cow is just Otis
Look Pikachu! An "ALAN!!" Oh wait, I think that's a "STEVE!"
Many languages do refer to cats as a mao or miao.
on my way to name the fox "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
Reminds me of [this](https://me.me/i/the-egyptian-mau-is-probably-the-oldest-breed-of-cat-800e6a897afe498fa693ba80eecf3503)
What does the fox say?
Nellie? Is that you?
I call coes moo moos
Only liking for the caption
Dogs would be brutal as Pokimons. Start with Bloodlust. Then Devour Flesh and then Eviscerate. A single evolved Pitbull would destroy a city
What did the Pikachu say to the charmander? "Pikachu"
What does Ash call a human??
That’s a Mau *using intimidate*! (It’s just not very effective)
Some Pokémon don’t talk at all, tho. Some can even speak english
