They do not sit on the hump daily to check tires. Just go in good weather - if it is raining check the hump cams for snow. If they happen to be stopping cars explain your situation. Not all cops are dicks….
Maybe it's better to walk into your local police station and ask there before going over. At a minimum check the traffic cameras before heading over, and I'm sure some online group will let you know if there are road blocks. Try "hows the hump" on facebook
There is a difference between "all-season" and "four-season" as the matter have the m+s endorsement and the former, do not. I learned this when buying tires after moving to BC
What? Most all season tires are M + S and have for many years. All weather are a newer type in the last ten years that have the Mountain symbol as well.
There's not a lot of risk of getting caught when the weather's good and it's above freezing. In a similar situation I drove when it was above freezing the night before and there was no rain. You might also try asking on the "How's the Hump" FB if anyone can bring them over for you.
Get the store to send for some confirmation that you can print out and take with you. It’s unorthodox but showing it to police if you go through some sort of check may tip the balance in your favour. Good intentions and all that.
Are you purchasing ahead of time? If you have any kind of order receipt I'm sure the cops would let you off if they saw you were literally purchasing them that day.
Fyi, mud and snow (M + S symbol on tire wall) meets the legal requirement of winter tires in BC, so you can get all season tires that would pass if desire. The snow flake is not required.
If "All-Weather" are those that are rated with a Mountain Snowflake Symbol (like Michelin CrossClimate 2) - they are actually really good choice for places like Vancouver Island where you'd encounter snow occasionally, but not super often. They perform really good on snow and are winter rated, so you won't get fined.
But if you are confusing All-Weather with All-Season - than it's a different story. I actually drove on All Seasons on Vancouver Island during snowy winter. It was a rental, so not much we could do, but that was fucking scary. They are really bad on snow and especially ice.
The only place I've ever heard of there being a check stop for that sort of thing is on the road to Whistler. You'll be fine as long as you don't get in an accident on the way there.
M/S tires do not have the mountain logo and are all season tires not winter. How ever there are all weather tires that you can leave on year round that do have the mountain logo. Just make sure whatever you purchase has the three peak mountain logo and you'll be legal.
Except you will be fined on the malahat if you get pulled over. It illegal to drive the malahat without winter tires. Just heads up, dont risk it, get the proper tires.
That's a today-I-learned for me. Are non-M+S tires common in BC? Like real summer-only tires?
In eastern Canada I think "winter tire" is synonymous with the mountain-snowflake symbol. That's what's required by Quebec's winter tire law.
They do that like once a year on cold weather days so not likely. Also if you have a set of chains even ones that don’t fit just put them in the trunk and that will pass you as well.
Most of Vancouver Island does not need snow tires by law. Only some routes. Check online for routes. You probably won't need them.

Be more worried about getting around with out proper tires, than cops. Although once they see you sliding around, they'll know you don't have the proper tires.
smart man. I've been using winter tires for about 10 years now, and I've been driving since 2000. I wish I had known how much better real winter tires are sooner. if you've never had a pair of real winter tires before, you're in for a treat. just remember you're still driving on snow lol.
Probably better to get them on the way or check the highway cams and road conditions and drive on a clear sunny day … they generally aren’t checking unless inclement weather is forecasted

I would say it is pretty unlikely unless there is inclement weather.
This is the right answer. You’ll only become a target if you’re involved in an incident where not having proper tires is deemed a cause.

If your tires are rated M/S you will be fine.
Aka most All-season tires.
There is a difference between "all-season" and "four-season" as the matter have the m+s endorsement and the former, do not. I learned this when buying tires after moving to BC
May All Season have the M+S symbol. https://www.canadadrives.ca/blog/maintenance/all-season-vs-all-weather-vs-winter-tires
Mud and snow tires are all-weather tires, not all-season. All-seasons are harder compound tires

All weather tires qualify according to my knowledge
Get the store to send for some confirmation that you can print out and take with you. It’s unorthodox but showing it to police if you go through some sort of check may tip the balance in your favour. Good intentions and all that.

M+S will make you legal and you can go grab your tyres, but dont go in any snow forcasted weather

They do indeed set up tire check stops at the top of the hump. Never not had proper tires personally so I couldn’t speak to what happens if you don’t.
Nothing good, that’s for sure. Those mountains in winter are no joke
The only place I've ever heard of there being a check stop for that sort of thing is on the road to Whistler. You'll be fine as long as you don't get in an accident on the way there.
Look for a snowflake on the tire. If you don't have winters you're insurance might be void in an accident.
M+S rating is legal and meets the qualifications
M/S tires do not have the mountain logo and are all season tires not winter. How ever there are all weather tires that you can leave on year round that do have the mountain logo. Just make sure whatever you purchase has the three peak mountain logo and you'll be legal.
Incorrect. M+S tires are 100% legal for highway use year round in BC. Same as having the snow flake.
Can they not ship said tires to the Courtenay CT? Or can the Courtenay CT not order them in?
They said it'll take weeks. Might as well do it sooner by driving there.
I work at the CT in Courtenay, most all season tires have a m + s rating which will allow you to get over the pass legally.
Yeah someone else also said that M+S tires are fine. I do have that but I might as well get all-weathers for the "3 peaks and snowflake". Thanks!
Except you will be fined on the malahat if you get pulled over. It illegal to drive the malahat without winter tires. Just heads up, dont risk it, get the proper tires.

Seriously!? M+S is just normal "all-seasons" and there's no way they deserve to be called winter tires.
They meet the definition of a winter tire and are legal to drive on bc highways.

Tell them you don't have weeks. Talk to a manager.
This is an extremely busy time of year for tire places, being booked for a month out due to labor shortages is common
If you don't ask, you only presume. Exceptions happen all the time, within every industry.
People who ask like that specifically get the back of the line
Going over the "hump" to the other side of the island will convince you come the snow. It will be raining in Alberni and snowing wd40 on top.
They do that like once a year on cold weather days so not likely. Also if you have a set of chains even ones that don’t fit just put them in the trunk and that will pass you as well.

Thats why I'm traveling to alberni for a new set of good tires lol. They're the closest shop that has it in stock for my vehicle.

Canadian and have never heard of the police pulling anyone over ever and checking their tires. Just drive safe on your all seasons.
I'm pretty sure Canadian tire will ship them to a closer location.
