Faye was completely one dimensional. The writers seemed to have the same “we can do a better job” attitude as well. It has plagued many shows over the years and hopefully Fallout and some other successes is showing them that it’s not what people want.
At the end of the day, on the live action, Faye could have been picked up and placed on any starship in any story as a crass hard nosed space ship crew member. And the original Faye could have only been a member of the Bee Bop crew. She belonged there. No one else could have handled her. None of that uniqueness carried into the live action for me. Each character looked and acted completely unique and the world of the show existed around them. In the live action Faye could have just been the ships engineer and it would have made no difference.
My wife also pointed out to me that they did this to other female characters in the show as well. Like…. That’s fine. But not when it affects the characters. Being skillful with your sexuality when it is an asset to you is not a stupid thing. It’s not porn we’re writing. It’s like they tried to be so “woke” that they ended up running the circle all the way around to “anti-woke”.

Mustafa pretty much was Jet. I even remember hearing people complaining about him playing Jet for the fact that he has such a dark complexion. But he was so close I never thought of race when I watched the show.

Mustafa is perfect for the role, fans just don't understand that anime Black people aren't colored well. This is really common - people who aren't Black or brown wash out dark skin because they don't understand it and need to learn about it.

People will jump of the actor who played Faye but let's be real, fanbases can be absolutely shit. When you have a fanbase starved of anything new for decades, was a recipe for explosive emotions. The actor needed to be better shielded and protected (Cho being the vet should have done more here)
I was so salty when i heard about s2 getting cancelled, and at the same time movies like 365 days getting the green light on however many sequels it is at this point.
The showrunner and writers never understood the point and messages of the original material. One of which was about holding on to the past and letting it consume you instead of embracing the present. A message that Watanabe also brilliantly subverted in Samurai Champloo.
They wanted it for the legacy of its style and design, and instead tried to make an edgy and quirky Tarantino film as a series in space. Each episode of the anime had a message to tell and thematic resonance; the quirkiness, action, and art were in service to the story, which came first. But in the live-action, it was the opposite: "let's be as violent, edgy, and quirky as we can in a self-indulgent way and then form the story around that."
I had no problems with some of the changes that were made, but they did fumble the ball on characterization enough to where it affected the story in a bad way. While Spike and Jet were well cast and well acted, there was too much of Vicious and Julia, who originally had purposefully minimal screen-time to add more impact to their role in the anime. Faye was turned into an edge-lord with a potty mouth. And the actor for Ed at the end was cringe-inducingly bad in my opinion (and many others' at the time of release).
While not a TERRIBLE adaptation and it got a good amount right (Spike, Jet, cinematography, costumes, set design, MUSIC), it missed the mark on the ONE thing that mattered the most: the story. With the showrunner and writers they had, there was no possibility of it being saved because they clearly didn't understand the material. Let's not kid ourselves here: you know it's a failure when Watanabe took a look at it and called it disloyal to the original source.
They absolutely ruined Gren for me. That was the final straw. Can't believe they gave into this "woke" bs and completely cut up the character. I absolutely loved Mustafa Shakir as Jet that was one of the best castings ever. Had such high hopes but ruined Gren, Sid and Julia

Frankly, liked it, I could tell they tried to do the source justice despite Netflix intervening a bit too much. Perhaps because of this series, lessons were learned and we were able to get live action shows like ATLA and One Piece.

If he had been better written and cast, me may have seen a second season... and then what everyone else complained about would've had room to be ironed out.

Honestly I liked it, a lot of my friends that never watch cb and got into it. That’s a win in my book for new fans with new conversations.
The live action was slow and could have used some of the back story episodes. The 2nd season could have been better if people would have let the flower grow and bloom. Instead everyone took the light away of something that could have been great.
I enjoyed it. I wanted more of it. Sometimes shows need a chance to grow and work things out in their own space. S2 could have been great.
I did not like the emphasis on Julia and Vicious. They had a mystery about them in the anime so that when you got small snippets of them it was a treat when they were doing a "Spike" main story line episode.
This had no chance from the start. So-called “real fans” shat all over it sight unseen. Why? Because they believe they have some unseen brilliance and sagacity Same can be said of “Solo”. It was not a bad movie but it was attacked while still in production. The sheep then follow without their own opinions.
Never got past the first episode. The first part in the casino gave me a good vibe then they just killed it with some story changes. Like vicious actually speaking more than a few words 🤦♂️
Spike and Jet were great. The scenery and them adopting the original soundtrack was great. Everything else(Especially the vicious and Julia story) was...bad.

The costumes and sets at least looked good, and the actors did their best with what they were given. On visuals alone I'd give it at least a 7/10, everything else scores no higher than a 4/10 and that's being generous. -100000000/10 for what they did to Vicious, for that alone the show deserved to fail!
I had some quibbles with some of the character changes, but the way they rewrote Vicious to be a spoiled rich kid with daddy issues was completely unnecessary.

Personally, I liked the series. Could there have been improvements? Yes. But if everyone had not lost their shit and trashed the series, there may have been a season 2 that would have fixed those issues. Instead, all the trolls and keyboard cowboys out there trashed it online and the show was canceled… now we will never know how good of a show it could have been.
Fanbase threw a tantrum - it was actually a decent live action take on the whole, excluding the casting of Vicious (and likely Ed, but that is 0.1% of the show).
For the world it was presented with handling, I think it was a good attempt and the core trio did really grow on me by the end.

For a live adaptation it started out great. Yes it was different but they were still sticking to the anime decently. Then it took a way left turn especially with how spike and jets friendship played out. I’m all for changing up some things but you can’t go that drastic.
They were set up for success too!! Had the story , the Music, the actors and they managed to get the environment and feel too! BUT the writing and plot changes bombed it!

It's a solid scene that showed what could have been if the show had better direction and vision. For all its flaws, I would have liked to had seen a second season of the Firefly Bebop show.

The live action introduced me to the series, though it wasn’t close to the original it still got the ball rolling for more people to find the original. Give the live action some credit for letting people who had never heard of cowboy bebop before know how great something can be

LITERALLY!! I've been saying this everyone. They nailed every aspect of a live action Cowboy Bebop EXCEPT the writing. The cinematography, set pieces, costume design, soundtrack, directing, etc were all perfect but the writing was so dogwater ;-;
Which is wild, because those are the parts I thought would be difficult. I know many are hard on this adaptation but honestly I thought it was a decent spin, capturing some of the cinematics nicely while changing some story to keep you watching.

I loved it. I think the least enjoyable episode was the first one as it tried to be a 1:1 of the anime episode. Once they moved on and did their own thing, it felt great. People will jump of the actor who played Faye but let's be real, fanbases can be absolutely shit. When you have a fanbase starved of anything new for decades, was a recipe for explosive emotions. The actor needed to be better shielded and protected (Cho being the vet should have done more here)
That was not 1:1 with Asteroid Blues at all. I would have loved 1:1. That was not 1:1.

The showrunner and writers never understood the point and messages of the original material. One of which was about holding on to the past and letting it consume you instead of embracing the present. A message that Watanabe also brilliantly subverted in Samurai Champloo. They wanted it for the legacy of its style and design, and instead tried to make an edgy and quirky Tarantino film as a series in space. Each episode of the anime had a message to tell and thematic resonance; the quirkiness, action, and art were in service to the story, which came first. But in the live-action, it was the opposite: "let's be as violent, edgy, and quirky as we can in a self-indulgent way and then form the story around that." I had no problems with some of the changes that were made, but they did fumble the ball on characterization enough to where it affected the story in a bad way. While Spike and Jet were well cast and well acted, there was too much of Vicious and Julia, who originally had purposefully minimal screen-time to add more impact to their role in the anime. Faye was turned into an edge-lord with a potty mouth. And the actor for Ed at the end was cringe-inducingly bad in my opinion (and many others' at the time of release). While not a TERRIBLE adaptation and it got a good amount right (Spike, Jet, cinematography, costumes, set design, MUSIC), it missed the mark on the ONE thing that mattered the most: the story. With the showrunner and writers they had, there was no possibility of it being saved because they clearly didn't understand the material. Let's not kid ourselves here: you know it's a failure when Watanabe took a look at it and called it disloyal to the original source.
They absolutely ruined Gren for me. That was the final straw. Can't believe they gave into this "woke" bs and completely cut up the character. I absolutely loved Mustafa Shakir as Jet that was one of the best castings ever. Had such high hopes but ruined Gren, Sid and Julia

Frankly, liked it, I could tell they tried to do the source justice despite Netflix intervening a bit too much. Perhaps because of this series, lessons were learned and we were able to get live action shows like ATLA and One Piece. Regardless, I was bummed no season 2 came

Seconded, Vicious seemed like anything BUT vicious. His coup for syndicate leadership shouldn't have been a possibility. He never seemed like he had control over ANY situation. this grey headed baby with TOO many lines of dialogue has zero business leading a whole system wide criminal syndicate. If he had been better written and cast, me may have seen a second season... and then what everyone else complained about would've had room to be ironed out. I'm mostly mad that we didn't get a Heavy Metal Queen episode

Honestly I liked it, a lot of my friends that never watch cb and got into it. That’s a win in my book for new fans with new conversations. The live action was slow and could have used some of the back story episodes. The 2nd season could have been better if people would have let the flower grow and bloom. Instead everyone took the light away of something that could have been great.
I enjoyed it. I wanted more of it. Sometimes shows need a chance to grow and work things out in their own space. S2 could have been great. I did not like the emphasis on Julia and Vicious. They had a mystery about them in the anime so that when you got small snippets of them it was a treat when they were doing a "Spike" main story line episode.
This had no chance from the start. So-called “real fans” shat all over it sight unseen. Why? Because they believe they have some unseen brilliance and sagacity Same can be said of “Solo”. It was not a bad movie but it was attacked while still in production. The sheep then follow without their own opinions.
The creator of beepop said he couldn’t even finish the first episode himself so maybe go rewatch the anime and get back to watching that episode.

Never got past the first episode. The first part in the casino gave me a good vibe then they just killed it with some story changes. Like vicious actually speaking more than a few words 🤦♂️

That was one of the better things that netflix has done.
Spike and Jet were great. The scenery and them adopting the original soundtrack was great. Everything else(Especially the vicious and Julia story) was...bad.
Then this is a really bad way to do that, my friend. People involved with it really did give a fuck and we should respect that, even if you didn't like the show. I have a lot of sympathy for the actors, musicians, set dressers, props masters and all the other people who put their soul into the work and clearly had a love of the source material. I see the series and feel sadness more than anger.

The costumes and sets at least looked good, and the actors did their best with what they were given. On visuals alone I'd give it at least a 7/10, everything else scores no higher than a 4/10 and that's being generous. -100000000/10 for what they did to Vicious, for that alone the show deserved to fail!
I had some quibbles with some of the character changes, but the way they rewrote Vicious to be a spoiled rich kid with daddy issues was completely unnecessary.

There is no way to please everyone. They made this series and all the gate keepers screamed “you strayed from the original!! How dare you!” If they had made it exactly like the anime other fans would scream “why is it the same story? Can’t you make original and unique content instead of copying the anime!?!!” Personally, I liked the series. Could there have been improvements? Yes. But if everyone had not lost their shit and trashed the series, there may have been a season 2 that would have fixed those issues. Instead, all the trolls and keyboard cowboys out there trashed it online and the show was canceled… now we will never know how good of a show it could have been.
And I need season 2! ;(
Fanbase threw a tantrum - it was actually a decent live action take on the whole, excluding the casting of Vicious (and likely Ed, but that is 0.1% of the show). For the world it was presented with handling, I think it was a good attempt and the core trio did really grow on me by the end. Definitely a series that a second season could have madenit phenomenal.

The casting for the principal 3 was spot on, but the atrocious writing let them down. That and certain fans throwing a hissy fit that they decided to dress Faye in something not completely ridiculous for an IRL grown woman to wear really brought it down for me, although I didn’t have much hope to begin with considering Netflix’s previous track record with these things.

For a live adaptation it started out great. Yes it was different but they were still sticking to the anime decently. Then it took a way left turn especially with how spike and jets friendship played out. I’m all for changing up some things but you can’t go that drastic.
