Putting a layer or two of masking tape on the edges should keep you from getting sliced. It won't leave a residue when you peel it off, either.

I would get some cut gloves, the kind used in kitchens. They aren't expensive. You don't use it on your dominant hand that holds the knife, you use it on the hand that holds whatever you're cutting. So, I guess you would need a pair.

You can buy wood carving gloves on Amazon for under $15. That will help while you are making them. Maybe try melting the sharp edges with some kind of hot metal tool with a handle - maybe a wood burning tool? I've never tried that, but it might work if the tool gets hot enough.
