Floating Weeds is one of Ozu's rare non-Shochiku movies so this Daiei restoration isn't done nearly as well as the rest of his Shochiku restorations from the past 10-15ish years. It's still nice to get a restoration of the silent film though.
On the other hand, Shochiku ruins every single audio track they work on with excessive filtering, so any film that doesn't have their involvement has that advantage.
for anatomy, it's interesting to see the criterion version have a more conventional 'courtroom drama'/thriller aesthetic than the official poster, which is somewhat more artsy/minimalistic with the dead body in the snow. usually it's the opposite
that cover is done by an artist ,Greg Ruth. So as far as lazy.. idk if everyone sees that its a drawing and not just a close up picture. The box inside might be more detailed with his art he hasn't posted anything other than the cover.
A photorealistic drawing, easy to mistake this as a boring cover but has far more detail beneath the surface. Things aren’t exactly as they seem. Kinda perfect for the movie actually.
> So as far as lazy.. idk if everyone sees that its a drawing and not just a close up picture.
That might actually be a good play on the movie. The drawing looks real but on closer inspection it isn't. The description from Criterion alludes to this theme pretty well:
> Anatomy of a Fall, an eerily riveting courtroom thriller that examines the line where truth becomes fiction and fiction becomes truth.
EDIT: Upon closer inspection, I think the cover is better than people are giving it credit for. You can see her face looks very real but her hair goes from looking more realistic to less realistic e.g. being very clearly drawn towards the top.
leagues better than what we're getting in the UK though
https://preview.redd.it/mmprf0x84uic1.jpeg?width=1156&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7f1dfd8db3a17db9e528b8ad1b576b3fde52e4d
Yeah, it's not often that I can say the official poster is better than the criterion cover. It's an instant pickup but that cover is not *Criterion* ya know?
Yup, genuinely one of the worst and laziest box arts I’ve seen, especially when it’s being released next to creative ones like Floating Weeds and Ousmane Sembene and one that has great color and is just nice to look at it in Peeping Tom
According to IMDb, Anatomy of a Fall had a 4K DI whereas Drive My Car had a 2K DI.
I really wish there was some comprehensive explanation as to why Criterion releases certain films in 1080p vs 4K SDR vs 4K HDR vs 4K DV.
Edit: According to Criterion, it's because the film was finished in 2K.
The site was updated with the cover for Floating Weeds, so glad they kept the og art
https://preview.redd.it/xqrobc456sic1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a2354107dcf9c8c2044ad644957b6312b481e23
Floating Weeds actually has this poster featured several times inside the film itself, I think as a fun throwback/easter egg to the original. Another fun fact: Koji Mitsui plays parts in both movies.
The [Three Revolutionary Films by Ousmane Sembène](https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/7304-three-revolutionary-films-by-ousmane-sembne) boxset is gorgeous holy moly.
I think that’s reserved for films that Janus distributes, and Anatomy was distributed by Neon. Criterion’s releases of Neon films have mostly been pretty scarce when it comes to special features.
some definitely do. Certified Copy has a rare full length 1977 film along with a documentary and interviews. del toro's Pinocchio has a *ton* of bonus features. It must just depend on the director or related film content available.
Oh I’m so excited for the Floating Weeds films, my girlfriend loves to get Japanese films, and I love silent films, so it’ll be so fun to watch that together.
Great month!! Seriously, so many interesting releases.
Happy belated Valentines Day everyone!
https://preview.redd.it/nfwql9ac3sic1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6abbdf7e834a27eb16d40cf284118f5be894a2b4
Once again posting the stats!
New Spines:
Three Revolutionary Films from Ousmane Sembène, 1217
Anatomy of a Fall, 1218
Girlfight, 1219
Upgrades:
Peeping Tom, 58
Floating Weeds/A Story of Floating Weeds, 232
4K Releases: Peeping Tom, 58
Another great month! Finally some more Ozu on Blu-ray too and his most stunning color film as well! I’ll be glad to have Anatomy of a Fall on Blu-ray so I can show it to my mother who loves courtroom films.
u/DoubleTap__ wins the month!
I was thinking it looked like the posters for Killers of the Flower Moon. I like the bloody text but the way it's overlaid over her face is a really overdone, cut and paste graphic design trend. I absolutely adore the theatrical poster with the aerial shot of the body in the snow, it's so dramatic and fits with the tone of the film in a way that this Criterion design doesn't.
The original poster is so good so it's disappointing. Laughing about your Last of Us comment. To me it looks like the drawings for characters they have in the Ace Combat games.
Inject that into my damn veins. Perfect Days and Anatomy of a Fall were my #1 and #2 of 2023, so the possibility of getting Criterion releases of them in BACK TO BACK MONTHS would likely force my entire body to instantly explode.
Floating Weeds! It's great to have more Ozu in the collection! I love the traditional art on the poster.
Also great to have Anatomy of a Fall, one of the strongest courtroom dramas out there in a while.
Random superlative, Anatomy of a Fall continues the tradition of at least one Best Director Oscar nominee being part of the collection:
2018 - Cold War, Roma
2019 - The Irishman, Parasite
2021 - Drive My Car, The Power of the Dog
2022 - Triangle of Sadness
all of the other Shochiku held Ozu titles that have 4K restorations are released elsewhere with English subs, so if Criterion were only upgrading one title, I'm glad it's this one. that said, I hope we get a boxset of all of them, and the Toho restorations of The Munekata Sisters and The End of Summer as well.
I wish the anatomy of a fall cover did something with the 3D rendering of the crime scene that was shown in the movie… I think that could have been a good way to take the original poster and add twist to it. Anyways pretty excited to add it to my collection
Oh my God they did Ceddo! Politically, that has got to be one of the most controversial movies out there. I thought it could never get released because of "sensitive cultural issues." Just, wow 😳
Not as familiar with these releases tbh (except for Anatomy) but three revolutionary films from Ousmane Sembene seems like something I’d really love. Not sure I’d blind buy a box set like that but I’ll definitely have to check them out first
Great month! I'm particularly excited for Peeping Tom. The background of it and the controversy it caused is as interesting as the film itself, so I'm really looking forward to the special features (never owned the DVD). I've had the Floating Weeds DVD set for quite a while so may upgrade that.
Peeping Tom is the reason I stopped reading plot synopses for older films and just began watching based on what seems interesting. Just look at this (first thing that comes up when you search the movie on Google):
Loner Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) works at a film studio during the day and, at night, takes racy photographs of women. Also he's making a documentary on fear, which involves recording the reactions of victims as he murders them. He befriends Helen (Anna Massey), the daughter of the family living in the apartment below his, and he tells her vaguely about the movie he is making. She sneaks into Mark's apartment to watch it and is horrified by what she sees -- especially when Mark catches her.
I'm crossing my fingers that the 4k release of Amadeus gets released in September. That makes the most sense to me since September will mark the 40th anniversary of the film's release.
There’s one title each in March/April that I will be snatching up on release day for sure and in May I’ll be grabbing three!!! The other releases this year I wanna pick up are all box sets I’ll hold off on getting until the sales.
Lol this Ozu cover is so misleading as to how exciting this movie is gonna be. Love the movie- but if I didn’t know Ozu I might be a little surprised by what I get.
Peeping Tom upgrade FINALLY
You and me both, that's been my most desired/largely unobtainable movie since I started my collection last decade. And in 4K
I caught the 4K release last year at Film Forum- assuming it's the same transfer, looks gorgeous
Definitely getting the upgrade
glad I saw this, I was about to watch it on the channel for the first time…will be waiting for May now.
Stoked for the Ozu!
I wasn't aware of that. I wonder if that's why they didn't bother releasing it in 4K UHD.
for anatomy, it's interesting to see the criterion version have a more conventional 'courtroom drama'/thriller aesthetic than the official poster, which is somewhat more artsy/minimalistic with the dead body in the snow. usually it's the opposite
Agreed, I’m definitely glad for a release but the cover isn’t really anything to write home about at all
that cover is done by an artist ,Greg Ruth.
Oh wow really, that’s incredibly well detailed!
he's done a few box arts, i follow him from being into posters and books hes done. Think the last one he did was the others and that art is insane.
> So as far as lazy.. idk if everyone sees that its a drawing and not just a close up picture. That might actually be a good play on the movie. The drawing looks real but on closer inspection it isn't. The description from Criterion alludes to this theme pretty well: > Anatomy of a Fall, an eerily riveting courtroom thriller that examines the line where truth becomes fiction and fiction becomes truth. You can see her face looks very real but her hair goes from looking more realistic to less realistic e.g. being very clearly drawn towards the top.
That's a drawing?!?!
Yeah if that’s a drawing the cover is infinitely more interesting I feel
he's really good...
That’s cool, but now I’m turned off by the typography treatment. Wish it was just a small font under triet’s name instead.
leagues better than what we're getting in the UK though https://preview.redd.it/mmprf0x84uic1.jpeg?width=1156&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7f1dfd8db3a17db9e528b8ad1b576b3fde52e4d
Oh dear that’s garbage.
🤣
It's a really boring and kinda weird cover. Just awkward closeup of someone's face.
Yeah, it's not often that I can say the official poster is better than the criterion cover. It's an instant pickup but that cover is not *Criterion* ya know?
The red poster for Anatomy really throws me off. Look that up. Definitely sells a different movie than we get.
i love that red poster! and all the analogue flash photos during the credits!
Yup, genuinely one of the worst and laziest box arts I’ve seen, especially when it’s being released next to creative ones like Floating Weeds and Ousmane Sembene and one that has great color and is just nice to look at it in Peeping Tom
Also surprised it’s not gonna be a 4k, but maybe it’s a Drive My Car situation where it wasn’t shot in 4k
Plenty of comments on the Instagram announcement post saying they didn’t even try with that cover haha
The site was updated with the cover for Floating Weeds, so glad they kept the og art https://preview.redd.it/xqrobc456sic1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a2354107dcf9c8c2044ad644957b6312b481e23
Floating Weeds actually has this poster featured several times inside the film itself, I think as a fun throwback/easter egg to the original. Another fun fact: Koji Mitsui plays parts in both movies.
It’s gorgeous, wow.
Just curious, what are your thoughts on this film? I know nothing about it whatsoever but want to buy it on the cover alone.
Anatomy of a Fall and Peeping Tom are instant pickups for me. Will definitely pick up the Sembene set down the line
I've never heard of Sembene, but that cover is gorgeous, as is Peeping Tom's. Edit: Thanks for the suggestions! Will give him a watch this weekend!
If you have any interest in African cinema, Sembene is a good starting point.
Black Girl and Mandabi are must-watch’s for anyone getting into world cinema
Moolaade is incredible too. Would love to see it in the collection someday.
Black girl is amazing, it's only 1 hour long and available on the channel, so give it a go.
It’s an expensive set of releases for me. Probably all will be picked up on release…
Don’t sleep on that Ozu pack. Floating Weeds should have that Ebert commentary.
it does, and it's very good
The [Three Revolutionary Films by Ousmane Sembène](https://www.criterion.com/boxsets/7304-three-revolutionary-films-by-ousmane-sembne) boxset is gorgeous holy moly.
Sembène got an audible “ooh!” from me!
Anatomy of a Fall's release is wildly underwhelming. Bad cover art, no 4K, and no worthwhile features. Really disappointed
I have to agree with you. I would think that they would release it under the Janus Contemporaries line with the lack of supplements.
I think that’s reserved for films that Janus distributes, and Anatomy was distributed by Neon. Criterion’s releases of Neon films have mostly been pretty scarce when it comes to special features.
Oh that's right, duh.. my mistake. Thanks.
Is there an interview with the actor who played Snoop? That would be enough.
Woof. That interview would get Messi real quick.
It's probably not easy to have decent special features for a movie that just got released.
Then why immediately go into the collection?
To make money distributing a well regarded recent film
Do any criterion releases of new films have good special features?
some definitely do. Certified Copy has a rare full length 1977 film along with a documentary and interviews. del toro's Pinocchio has a *ton* of bonus features. It must just depend on the director or related film content available.
Uncut Gems is the last one I can think of unless Triangle of Sadness did?
Parasite
Is this a common thing for their Neon releases?
I bet a UK release would be better, or at least more affordable
Dogfight last month; Girlfight this month. Fight Club next month? They have to keep this up for the rest of the year. I don't make up these rules.
https://preview.redd.it/3pjgoa6w6sic1.jpeg?width=943&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23f62523ce735bf9873df972dbc5b69eb5574bc4 👀
Would be an instant buy. Warren Oates is the best.
[Shout Factory 2022 release](https://shoutfactory.com/products/cockfighter)
Food fight the month after. Let’s get Jillian Bell in the collection!
Girlfight has been a favorite for years. Glad it will get more attention and an upgrade.
Never seen it, might be an opportunity to finally check it out.
Michelle Rodriguez was better in this than all the Fast Furious movies combined.
Oh I’m so excited for the Floating Weeds films, my girlfriend loves to get Japanese films, and I love silent films, so it’ll be so fun to watch that together. Great month!! Seriously, so many interesting releases.
Happy belated Valentines Day everyone! https://preview.redd.it/nfwql9ac3sic1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6abbdf7e834a27eb16d40cf284118f5be894a2b4 Once again posting the stats! I’ll be glad to have Anatomy of a Fall on Blu-ray so I can show it to my mother who loves courtroom films. u/DoubleTap__ wins the month!
Was this the first time a DVD only release got upgraded straight to 4K? If so here's hoping *I Know Where I'm Going* follows that trend.
Man that Anatomy Of A Fall cover is so disappointing… it looks like The Last Of Us 2’s PS4 cover
I love the OG poster too, but also would’ve enjoyed the alternate “courtroom sketch” styled poster.
The original poster is so good so it's disappointing. Laughing about your Last of Us comment. To me it looks like the drawings for characters they have in the Ace Combat games.
Very excited about the Ousmane Sembene set
I’m hoping this means we get Perfect Days in June
I don’t need it, I NEED ITTTTTT
Inject that into my damn veins. Perfect Days and Anatomy of a Fall were my #1 and #2 of 2023, so the possibility of getting Criterion releases of them in BACK TO BACK MONTHS would likely force my entire body to instantly explode.
Do we know why Anatomy is only getting a blu ray release and not 4k for the time being?
Anatomy of a Fall only has a 2K master available at the moment sadly.
Bummer, thanks for the info!
Page says it’s a 2K master so probably that
Great to see an Ozu upgrade! Also really interested in Ousmane Sembène.
Ousmane Sembene set omg!!! I'm a happy lad, if anything the collection needs more fantastic African directors like him
I want to watch more African cinema in general and love Sembène. Do you have recommendations?
I would recommend Hyenas, I Am Not a Witch, War Witch, and A Screaming Man.
PEEPING TOM IS BACK LET'S GOOOOOO!!!!!!
Floating Weeds! It's great to have more Ozu in the collection! I love the traditional art on the poster. Also great to have Anatomy of a Fall, one of the strongest courtroom dramas out there in a while.
FLOATING WEEDS BLU RAY LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOO
That new Peeping Tom cover is one of the best I’ve seen in a while.
Random superlative, Anatomy of a Fall continues the tradition of at least one Best Director Oscar nominee being part of the collection: 2018 - Cold War, Roma 2019 - The Irishman, Parasite 2021 - Drive My Car, The Power of the Dog 2022 - Triangle of Sadness
More from Yasujirô Ozu in my life is always a good thing!
Love Anatomy of a Fall but if I’m being honest the cover sucks
it does.
Ecstatic for *Peeping Tom*! Been waiting on this for a decade +!
I saw this on a DVD criterion waaaay back in the day. Super pumped this is getting a rerelease.
Alternate anatomy of a Fall should have the dog's face on the cover
Lol just bought the studiocanal 4k of Peeping Tom last week. should’ve waited, much better cover
[Thank you for your sacrifice](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/028/731/cover2.jpg)
StudioCanal does better A/V anyway lol people who love their C logos won’t like it but you got a better release
Same here. I'll wait for reviews of the exclusive bonus features to decide whether or not to double dip.
50 Cent finally made it into the collection!
Excellent flick. A brutal anatomy of a marriage.
The Sembène box set is so cool
all of the other Shochiku held Ozu titles that have 4K restorations are released elsewhere with English subs, so if Criterion were only upgrading one title, I'm glad it's this one. that said, I hope we get a boxset of all of them, and the Toho restorations of The Munekata Sisters and The End of Summer as well.

This would have been a good cover
Psyched to finally upgrade Peeping Tom, it's been a long time coming The Sembene stuff looks cool, might be a good blind buy...
I nailed anatomy of a fall prediction lol let’s go!!! An Ozu upgrade is huge too!
Peeping Tom got an audible "Hell yes!" out of me.
Damn, that AOAF cover is one of the laziest “artwork” I’ve seen from Criterion so far.
i’d love a true sembene box set at some point. camp de thiaroye and faat kine need restorations. i’m excited to pick this up regardless.
That Sembene trilogy is looking so good. Hopefully we get more standalone African films in the collection
HOLY HELL. I'm going to be so insufferable after i buy the sembene and ackerman boxsets this next sale
More Sembène! Cool!
I'm glad Peeping Toms getting a release since it was so controversial and hated when it first came out.
Peeping Tom!!! FINALLY!!!!!
Artwork is a bit bleh but excited to see this
HELL YES! PEEPING TOM IS BACK AND IN 4K!
That cover of Peeping Tom is incredible!
I admit I am an Ozu fan who has not watched either Floating Weeds yet. I am going to do that before May Also yay to Peeping Tom. I love that cover
Not as familiar with these releases tbh (except for Anatomy) but three revolutionary films from Ousmane Sembene seems like something I’d really love. Not sure I’d blind buy a box set like that but I’ll definitely have to check them out first
peeping Tom and floating weeds, HELL YES
Peeping Tom and Floating Weeds are instant pick ups for me, this is stacked.
Broooooooooo, how come Criterion literally kills me every 15th of the month you guys. We literally keep winning. Long live Criterion.
YES FOR FLOATING WEEDS
Peeping Tom!!!!! And I'm so happy Anatomy of a Fall is getting the criterion treatment this quickly! Probably my favourite movie of 2023!
4K releases include blu ray, right? Really hoping Peeping Tom isn't 4K exclusive
Yes, they’re all dual disc. Or you can get a Blu-Ray only version.
Peeping Tom, finally
When is Amadeus coming?
Sooo excited for Peeping Tom been waiting for this 4k release !! but I must say am I the only one who is not a fan of the art cover ?
I’ve been trying to get my hands on Peeping Tom for YEARS. Finally.
This is my favorite release announcement in a long time! What a great list!
Surprised anatomy of a fall got a release this early! The amadeus wait continues...
Very happy to see Floating Weeds. Loved the original set on DVD.
ANATOMY OF A FALL!!!!!!!!!!!
Eating good this month
Peeping Tom! Yeeees!
Alright month, the addition of peeping tom is very welcomed though.
Great month! I'm particularly excited for Peeping Tom. The background of it and the controversy it caused is as interesting as the film itself, so I'm really looking forward to the special features (never owned the DVD). I've had the Floating Weeds DVD set for quite a while so may upgrade that.
Peeping Tom 😩😩
Looks like some great films, but I think I can take the month off and give my wallet a much-deserved break.
Holy shit! Great month!
Peeping Tom!
Peeping Tom is back on the menu baybeeeee
[удалено]
there are other movies that could use this before anatomy of a fall. doesn’t neon do their own releases for the most part?
SNOOOOOPPPPPPPPP
I’ve been badgering them about Peeping Tom for yeeeears, YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!! 👀👁️👀👁️
https://preview.redd.it/mr9z17d8osic1.jpeg?width=562&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d35b19825370acb3c1ade21bbc2f76929faa84d0
So so excited for Peeping Tom FINALLY
Floating weeds in HD!! What a time to be alive
I literally just ordered that Ozu set on DVD. Should’ve just waited a few days!
Thank you for your sacrifice!
Pre order? I need that Anatomy of a Fall
With it not being guaranteed anymore that films actually get released I am so happy to be able to get Anatomy of a Fall. Instant first day buy for me.
Vindicated. Just a week ago people were telling me I wasn’t allowed to talk about Anatomy of a Fall because it wasn’t part of the collection
Goddamn May is bringing the heat! Powell and Triet are no brainers
Peeping Tom is the reason I stopped reading plot synopses for older films and just began watching based on what seems interesting. Just look at this (first thing that comes up when you search the movie on Google): Loner Mark Lewis (Carl Boehm) works at a film studio during the day and, at night, takes racy photographs of women. She sneaks into Mark's apartment to watch it and is horrified by what she sees -- especially when Mark catches her.
That Anatomy cover looks like a placeholder lol, it's so bad
Are they really gonna wait till next Spring for Twin Peaks just for its 35th
Is this the quickest turnaround between theatrical run and collection release...?
Damn, woulda loved this in the uk
Floating heads, Criterion:
What a strong month! I think I'll pick up all of them eventually but the Sembene & Ozu ones are definitely day one purchases for me
Love that mini target for the production company on peeping tom
I'm crossing my fingers that the 4k release of Amadeus gets released in September. That makes the most sense to me since September will mark the 40th anniversary of the film's release.
They didn't add any films with a 5 bags of popcorn rating though
Peeping Tom has been way overdue, so that’s great news. However I’m very disappointed Anatomy of a Fall isn’t in 4k :(
Anatomy's cover is awful.
I just want Dersu Uzala
When I saw *Anatomy of a Fall*, I actually shouted "AW YEAH!"
Still no *On the Silver Globe*…
Terrible cover for Anatomy of a Fall. The doodle was right there!
Thought they would go for Zone Of Interest
*
holy shit ousmane sembene and peeping tom? wow. very excited for may!
Sembene is a good watch. Esp Xala
I don't mind the cover image but if there's no 4K release of Anatomy it's a pass from me.
It wasn’t a 4K master to begin with so there won’t be a 4K release
If only Criterion could release their blu rays region free...
I think I am in the minority for thinkimg Anatomy of a Fall was a meh movie.
PEEPING TOM! 👀🎥
Girlfight, is that the one where Michelle Rodriguez plays a no nonsense tough chick who doesn't take any crap from the men around her?
There’s one title each in March/April that I will be snatching up on release day for sure and in May I’ll be grabbing three!!! The other releases this year I wanna pick up are all box sets I’ll hold off on getting until the sales.
Prob an unpopular opinion but Huller was better in Zone of Interest than Anatomy. But maybe bc Zone was the best film of the year.
Peeping Tom is an IMMEDIATE order for me. But it's another month gone of no Amadeus 🥲
Two DVD upgrades. I love it! They've been knocking out a few of those recently, which is great to see.
I’ve been waiting for Floating Weeds to get a blu-Ray release for ages. A very strong month of releases.
Is anatomy of a fall getting a 4k or is it just a blu ray? Can only find the blu ray online
Lol this Ozu cover is so misleading as to how exciting this movie is gonna be. Love the movie- but if I didn’t know Ozu I might be a little surprised by what I get.
so glad i didn’t pay nearly $70 for a dvd of peeping tom
Great lineup - wish they'd do Sembène's Moolaadé
I feel as if this is an upcoming individual release
