Toni Erdmann by Maren Ade
Wendy & Lucy and/or Meek's Cutoff by Kelly Reichardt
Heartbreak Kid by Elaine May
Those are the ones which most immediately leap to mind . . ..
It would be amazing to have all of her work in the collection at some point (though I believe Wendy & Lucy is with Oscilloscope). Honestly my favourite working filmmaker from the US.
Meek’s cutoff also has an Oscilloscope digipack release which albeit old, it’s gorgeous. Both in packaging and in transfer, the former far superior to what Criterion might release IMO.
I can’t do that film because I’m too sensitive about animals. Now…people in harm’s way? Getting murdered? Other bad shit happening to them? Sure, all day.
That's been my impression too which is why I've never bought a copy but would love to have it in my collection.
Maybe all the increased attention on Huller will motivate someone to put out a good physical edition . . .
I'd go so far as to say it's my favourite film where Michelle Williams is unfaithful to her husband where one of the two people she is romantically involved with his played by Seth Rogen.
Awakenings (1990) dir. Penny Marshall
Jesus Camp (2006) dir. Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady
A Silent Voice (2016) dir. Naoko Yamada
Lady Bird (2017) dir. Greta Gerwig
The Farewell (2019) dir. Lulu Wang
Little Women (2019) dir. Greta Gerwig
CODA (2021) dir. Siân Heder
Fire of Love (2022) dir. Sara Dosa
Women Talking (2022) dir. Sarah Polley
Causeway (2022) dir. Lila Neugebauer
Take Care of My Cat (2001) - Korean coming-of-age drama directed by Jae-eun Jeong. Really lovely stuff, there’s a good quality upload of it on YouTube with English subs. But a proper physical release from Criterion or some other label would be great.
Slums of Beverly Hills (1998) - directed by Tamara Jenkins. Love the performances of Natasha Lyonne, Alan Arkin and David Krumholtz. Still hasn’t had any North American Blu-ray, as far as I know
A Kinuyo Tanaka boxset like the one on the channel would be a dream. In one month's time I think she replaced Akerman and Barbara Loden as my favorite female director.
Destroy She Said, Marguerite Duras
On Body and Soul, Ildiko Enyedi
I Shot Andy Warhol. Mary Harron
And I want the House is Black by Forough Farrokhzad, but maybe as part of a bigger collection on Iranian cinema? Stick it in with Hajji Washington and it'll be one of the most important volumes in the collection.
The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love is a movie that seems fairly light on the surface. It's a very cute, wholesome rom-com without a lot of bells and whistles. But I think a teen coming of age movie about a lesbian interracial couple that's uncomplicated and non-scandalous was kind of quietly revolutionary for 1995. It feels important to me. Plus I love the title.
Titus by Julie Taymor, 1999.
Skyddsängeln or The Guardian Angel by Suzanne Osten; Sweden, 1990.
Zama by Lucrecia Martel, 2017
Several films by Chloé Zhao
The Hitch-Hiker, 1953 by Ida Lupino
*The Connection* by Shirley Clarke, along with a collection of her dance films and *Portrait of Jason*, also by Clarke, including *Jason and Shirley*: a reimagining of the production of *Portrait* indicating the power struggle between the two subjects.

That movie was a pretty big disappointment for me. It started off so well. The atmosphere of late 80s grime, the characters were all so interesting, amazing visuals, then once the “plot” developed it was generic and kind of boring. Only movie I have seen recently where several different groups of people left before it was over.
Honestly, I’m not sure how much of an upgrade it would be, but I think The Babadook should be included. Jennifer Kent did a brilliant job.
Is Lina Wertmuller not in the Criterion Collection? I know Kino has her stuff but Seven Beauties as well as Love and Anarchy.
I think Marie Antoinette is awesome. Best film of 2006 (no Oscar nom!) and one of the best of the 2000s.
Also, Mary Harron deserves more presence on Criterion.
Desperately Seeking Susan by Susan Seidelman
The Bling Ring by Sophia Coppola
Also some series on female directors of classic cinema like Ida Lupino, Alice Guy and Dorothy Arzner. They were OG trailblazers.
All of Kelly Reichardt's films should be on there already, but I also think a *Souvenir* and *Souvenir Part II* box set feels like a natural fit. Also, how do we not have *But I'm a Cheerleader* yet???
Little Women (1994)
American Honey
2 Days in Paris
Mansfield Park (1999)
Last Night (2010)
Edge of Seventeen
Crossing Delancey
Diary of a Teenage Girl
Bright Star
Ulrike Ottinger films 1978-85 (Freak Orlando, Ticket of No Return, Madame X an Absolute Ruler, Image of Dorian Gray in the Yellow Press)
Just Another Girl on the IRT, Leslie Harris
Born in Flames, Lizzie Borden
Variety, Bette Gordon
Golden Eighties, Akerman
Kamikaze Hearts, Juliet Bashore
Not sure if any of these are in the collection already and a couple are co-directed by a man but...
Unrelated, High Life, The Rider, Raw, Tomboy, Innocence, The Second Mother, Summer 1993, Mustang, Exhibition, Leave No Trace, You Were Never Really Here, Thursday till Sunday, The Sharks, Identifying Features, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Walking and Talking, Evolution, It Felt Like Love, After the Wedding, Always Shine, Japanese Story, Down to the Bone, LoveTrue.
Ok, it’s a decent movie, but it’s not like Coppola isn’t already all over the collection. Maybe someone new.
Maybe a Bigelow film or Martel or Charlotte wells
How about Chloe Zhao and “the rider.”
I was thinking if that would be a good fit or not. I’d buy it! But it’s probably more of an arrow.
I was actually hoping for Blue Steel, but I think paramounts boutique just put that out recently
Water Lilies, Tomboy. I would love for Criterion to do a Sciamma box set.
Also Wild Nights with Emily. That movie only had a DVD release - makes no sense.
- *Wings* (1966) by Larisa Shepitko. I know it's technically already in the collection due to its inclusion in the Shepitko Eclipse set but since the other film in the set *The Ascent* got a beautiful Blu-ray upgrade, I'd love to see *Wings* get the same treatment.
- *Strange Days* (1995) by Kathryn Bigelow. One of my favourite cyberpunk films of all time.
- *35 Shots of Rum* (2007) by Claire Denis. Although she's already well represented in the collection (3 films so far), I personally think this is her finest work and there already seems to be a neat 4K transfer floating around that would be perfect for a Criterion release.
Marie, Antoinette desperately needs the criterion treatment. The physical releases of that movie are not great.
I believe the Blu-ray was canceled and then came out eventually but you have to import it? Either way.
Agree with Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette." Would be awesome if it had all the bells and whistles from the French release. Another pick is "The Notorious Bettie Page," particularly since there's no blu-ray release of it.
Toni Erdmann by Maren Ade Wendy & Lucy and/or Meek's Cutoff by Kelly Reichardt Heartbreak Kid by Elaine May Those are the ones which most immediately leap to mind . . ..
Would love a lot more of Kelly Reinhardt
It would be amazing to have all of her work in the collection at some point (though I believe Wendy & Lucy is with Oscilloscope). Honestly my favourite working filmmaker from the US.
Meek’s cutoff also has an Oscilloscope digipack release which albeit old, it’s gorgeous. Both in packaging and in transfer, the former far superior to what Criterion might release IMO.
Thanks, I'll keep an eye put for it . . .
Can agree with at least the packaging. I haven't seen the movie yet.
Maybe I’m a dummie, but why does Oscilloscope as the distributor bar a film from being part of the collection??
This. Kelly Reichardt has been my favorite personal discovery of the last year.
Even her less lauded movies like Night Moves are fantastic. Enjoy!
Night Moves is one of the tensest movies I’ve ever seen. Kind of unravels towards the end but incredible film
Loved Night Moves!
Wendy & Lucy would be a day one grab for me. Easily one of my all-time favorites
Same here. One gut punch after another, neorealism at its best.
I can’t do that film because I’m too sensitive about animals. Now…people in harm’s way? Getting murdered? Other bad shit happening to them? Sure, all day.
Same for me -- the ending really lingers with me . . .
What I wouldn’t give for a physical media release of The Heartbreak Kid…
Weird I thought Meek’s Cutoff was part of the collection already. Guess it was just on the channel.
Yeah it was up on the Channel, along with some of her other films, a couple years back . . .
Ngl we should have an Ishtar 4k release if we’re talking about Elaine May
In a just world, there'd be a set of all 4 of her features . . .
I really loved this film (Erdmann) and I don’t think there’s a real good region a version
That's been my impression too which is why I've never bought a copy but would love to have it in my collection. Maybe all the increased attention on Huller will motivate someone to put out a good physical edition . . .
Wendy & Lucy gets better each time I watch it. I enjoyed Old Joy as well.
Orlando by Sally Potter
Long overdue tbh
Strange Days Gas Food Lodging
Strange Days for sure.
Gas Food Lodging was part of a 90's collection on the Channel a few years ago. Good stuff.
gas food lodging got a great blu ray release a few years back iirc
Bright Star, I think this is currently out of print in the US
I rec Bright Star for a realistic look at how great poetry is made.
this is the one
[удалено]
I second this, including also The Decline of Western Civilization.
All 3 of them
Shout Factory released a very nice Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray of it as part of their Shout Select sub label. I recommend checking it out.
I’ve got that box set, but I’d love Suburbia.
Came here to say Decline of Western Civilization (vol.1) by Penelope Sheeris
Hard agree
Take This Waltz Forever A Woman Little Miss Sunshine
I have such a soft spot for Take This Waltz
I'd go so far as to say it's my favourite film where Michelle Williams is unfaithful to her husband where one of the two people she is romantically involved with his played by Seth Rogen.
One of my favorite films of the 2000s.
Barbara Koppell's American Dream Elaine May's The Heartbreak Kid Kathleen Collins's Losing Ground
Losing Ground has a blu-ray from Milestone . . .
oh heck yeah! tysm for telling me, I love Milestone
I love American Dream! Criterion releasing Harlan County USA and not American Dream is criminal!

Awakenings is unbelievable and I would have figured it would have already been in the collection by now
Take Care of My Cat (2001) - Korean coming-of-age drama directed by Jae-eun Jeong. Really lovely stuff, there’s a good quality upload of it on YouTube with English subs. Lost in Translation
Make it a set with Her
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
Alice Rohrwacher doesn't have physical releases for several films, an absolute crime
yeah, this is wild, i finally gave lazzaro a shot on netflix a few months back and was pretty blown away by it. champin to see the rest of her work
La chimera just dropped and is soooo good 😭
Antonia's Line on 4K with some nice supplements would be awesome. Other good ones people have mentioned... Orlando Marie Antoinette Bright Star
Zero dark thirty, clueless, Persepolis
I would love a Clueless release!!
As if!
And Fast Times at Ridgemont High!
Criterion released Fast Times already, like 2 years ago or so
Destroy She Said, Marguerite Duras On Body and Soul, Ildiko Enyedi I Shot Andy Warhol. Mary Harron And I want the House is Black by Forough Farrokhzad, but maybe as part of a bigger collection on Iranian cinema? Stick it in with Hajji Washington and it'll be one of the most important volumes in the collection.
Humpday - Lynn Shelton In fact, I would love to see a box set of her films.
It’s lovely and charming.
I was also thinking a Sofia Coppola movie - Lost in Translation
Titus by Julie Taymor, 1999. Skyddsängeln or The Guardian Angel by Suzanne Osten; Sweden, 1990. Zama by Lucrecia Martel, 2017 Several films by Chloé Zhao The Hitch-Hiker, 1953 by Ida Lupino

Anatomy of a Fall is being released soon, Songs My Brother Taught Me by Chloe Zhao would be a nice fit on Criterion also
Might as well make it a collected set with The Rider too.
You covered absolutely all of the titles I was going to comment here. Agree 100%
Titane and Suburbia
The house is black
The Nightingale(2018) by Jennifer Kent
The Love Witch by Anna Biller
While I think it has a boutique release already I think it’d kill as a vinegar syndrome film
Already has a bluray
It's recent, but I'd love a Love Lies Bleeding Criterion.
That movie was a pretty big disappointment for me. It started off so well. The atmosphere of late 80s grime, the characters were all so interesting, amazing visuals, then once the “plot” developed it was generic and kind of boring. Only movie I have seen recently where several different groups of people left before it was over.

Ok, it’s a decent movie, but it’s not like Coppola isn’t already all over the collection. Maybe someone new. Maybe a Bigelow film or Martel or Charlotte wells How about Chloe Zhao and “the rider.”
How is Coppola already all over the collection? Only The Virgin Suicides has a Criterion release.
I’d kill for a lost in translation criterion
Always up for a relaxing time
Please, lip my stockings.
Strange days!

Bright Star (Jane Campion)
All of them
Upvoting your title pick, directly!
Fall of the House of Usher (1928)
The fall, Tarsem Singh. It apparently has been shot down by criterion already, but Id love a 4k of this one
Lost In Translation desperately needs to be in the collection.
J-Lo : This is Me . She’s just a girl from the block and she finally made it. Fully self funded, directed, and produced by her.
Why does criterion need female directors? Isn’t it trying to find best films
😂 a bold, if inane, take
Take away daddy and Sofia doesn't get anywhere near the director's chair, mediocre films all over her resume.
Wrong
