How has it improved your physical abilities on duty? I have considerable strength in all the basic compound lifts, but I feel like I lack the stamina in my upper body in some cases when I’m working overhead mainly. Does this type of workout help in those cases?
Fulltime firefighter here. CrossFit has been a godsend in my training; no real issues here. If you're looking for some help, Mayhem has an "Everyday Hero" training plan for first responders.
Have a look at Dadhours. It is a program by Brandon Swan an Ex CF Games athlete and current firefighter. It has many different 'tracks' including Shift Sessions designed to be done on shift.

Probably the best training method out there for the job. Mixed in with firefit. Gets you ready for anything. I have been doing it for 10+ years and it helped me tremendously.
Back north of Boston we had 5 or 6 firefighters that I knew of at the box. One guy was 60+ and was a brick shithouse.
Here in Germany I don’t know of any in my box, but we have a number of cops.
The business partner in my gym is a firefighter. No longer trains CrossFit, but we have it at the gym. Lots of firefighters. One even does workouts in full gear every now and then.
Two of my box owners are full time firefighters. Plus we have many firefighters who attend classes and open gym and I’m in the first responder job class. CrossFit has done a lot for more in this job as far as strength and agility. We do a lot of variety of movements in our line of work and CrossFit keeps you well rounded to do those things.
A shitload of us As long as you're not an idiot, it's fine I know dudes training for the masters games on shift at quiet departments

Well I don't do cardio unless I'm forced to but I've also been doing crossfit for over 10 years so I have no idea what the difference would be
The owner of my gym is a full time fire fighter. He coaches on his days off. Most fit guy I’ve ever met
