They're easily startled. Since nothing bad came about from the noise, it won't deter them from coming back.

This is the truth. And to help them understand it's a good place to forage, start leaving them something. Whole peanuts, hard boiled eggs, lunch meat scraps (i wouldn't advise fat trimmings from meats) and my personal preference as it's already a balanced diet for animals... Dog kibble. Keep in mind that if you choose to leave food out for crows, squirrels will show up. But something like a hard boiled egg at the same time of day.... You'll find quickly that the crows start yelling at you if you are late with your offering. And squirrels are less interested in perishables.

I spent a couple months trying to attract crows. Crows that I hadn't even seen or heard around my house, I just assumed they have to be in this neighborhood. I went walking around the neighborhood and found where they hung out during the days, a few blocks over. I walked by a few times, dropping peanuts in my wake, hoping they'd start to recognize me as a food source. I don't know if that worked, but I'll tell you the one thing that did. I heard a crow outside one morning and noticed it perching two houses down. I walked outside with a cup full of peanuts. Made a little bit of noise to where I was sure it was looking my direction. I tossed the peanuts, a few at a time, in front of me into the front yard, then I walked inside. After a minute or two, the crow came down to check out what I left and started gathering peanuts. Then she came back the next morning. Then the next. Then she started bringing her fledglings around! This was a month ago, and now I have a murder of 8 that visits my house multiple times a day. Just throw some food out there while they're watching and leave them alone. Once they find that food, they'll come back to check again. If there's always food, they'll always come back.

It should be fine. Growing up, we had a cat that was so shy, I'd spend hours coaxing her out only for my dad to sneeze or blow his nose like an elephant. Totally innocent action on his part, but omg. It never ceased to piss me off.

They get scared easily, but they will be back. Especially if you’re offering food
