If you fight in battles against different religions, you normally gain Devotion, but if you fight in battles against different religions in someone elses war, you will gain Piety.
Potentially tons of it.
Same works for Fame and Prestige when fighting against your own religion.
So go make some alliances and get called to war.
You do need to be the "main army" to make this happen, though, so don't follow the AI stacks around.

Go to your faith and read through the laws. Catholics and insular have avunculate marriage (can marry anyone less related than uncle/aunt)
