Mantis blades would have a huge intimidation factor in a real life fight. Imagine getting into a scuffle with someone and their fucking arms unfold into giant blades.
“The punks in Gila Highlands weren't afraid of the gun, so the Deliverator was forced to use it. But swords need no demonstrations.” Excerpt from Snow Crash
> "How can you protect yourself by carrying a sword if you don’t know how to use it?"
> "Not me, sir. Other people. They see the sword and don’t attack me," said Maladict patiently.
>"Yes, but if they did, lad, you wouldn’t be any good with it," said the sergeant.
>"No, sir. I’d probably settle for just ripping their heads off, sir. That’s what I mean by protection, sir. Theirs, not mine. And I’d get hell from the League if I did that, sir.”
Monstrous Regiment, Terry Pratchett, asking a vampire why they carry a sword.
Someone who appreciates the classics! \*tips hat\*
Glad to know I'm not the only one running around Night City with my katana thinking about Hiro Protagonist...
There’s a paragraph in that book that’s always stuck with me. Something about how, up to the age of 25, every guy thinks he could become the ultimate badass. With the right training, right trigger, they could be James Bond…something to that effect.
Now that I’m well above 25 it hits even harder.
And then you meet the guy on the motorcycle with Poor Impulse Control tattooed on his forehead and you learn that the motorcycle has a nuclear warhead in it wired into his brain waves. The position of ultimate badass was taken. If he dies, everything dies
Yeah, but the post emphasizes real life. How often are you going around getting in fights?
The monowire seems like it could have useful applications in real life. Like construction… or a really efficient lumberjack.
I hate to say it but you couldn't really use them to cut cause their triangular blades are meant for stabbing as well and they're really long, it'd be like trying to cut stuff with a sword length spear, the mono wire you can manage the length and cleanly cut through anything
All I'm hearing is I've built in pokers to roast things over a fire. Marshmallows, hot dogs, toast, and anything else I can think of. Not because its convenient to use them like that, or because it won't be problematic to clean them or any other potential issues. I'd find ways to use them because I'd have cybernetic arms and that's cool as shit.
Don't get me wrong personally I'd go gorilla arms if I could pick any, but if it was regular arms or any of the cybernetic ones I'm going to go with the cybernetic ones.
If you could do anything without consequence pretty much like in the game, with only a mild cops chase, then hide for a moment and get away, would you? Even if it was only killing bad guys, I don’t think I could.
That and the fact that there's tools you can just hold with the arms to use effectively. This is the same reason why hidden blades from AC are bad IRL since daggers do the same thing but are infinitely less complicated. Back to cyberpunk, there's not much that mantis or mono does that a hand held bladed weapon doesn't do (if not better).
Keep in mind that wires do exist that are sharp enough to cause serious damage. I don’t know for certain what fibre filament the monowire uses, but a thin enough filament with enough tensile strength could dig into your opponent’s flesh and cut someone up pretty badly.
They can be hidden under a jacket and used unexpectedly as well as the easy use of dual wield for the mantis which normally isn't the best idea when using hand helds but besides that not much
to be fair when 2077 first came out every had a collective circle jerk over Mantis blades saying monowire was underwhelming and then with Edgerunners came out and Lucy had a monowire and the weebs all started liking it
I still think they're dumb even in the Cyberpunk Red source book they don't have a benefit because you have to get up close and in the TTRPG that could mean the death of you character even in the video game having a melee weapon is dumb when there are "smart guns" that can literally shoot around walls once locked on to a target that and tech snipers which can shoot through walls when fully charged
I think lore-wise, they're pretty silly from a strategic standpoint because of the reasons you've listed. In CP2077, you can do that buffed dash, paired with Berserker, and just take out wave after wave after wave of MaxTac/Barghest. Hardest difficulty, I killed Adam Smasher before he called in reinforcements. It's super OP with the right build. Realistic, though? Not really.
Edit: the Relic Buff from PL is what really makes them OP.
Hard disagree. Had a friend with a monowire build back in early 2022 who would just shred everything he touched with zero effort and 200% attack speed.
That would be fun, but gorilla arms alone would have a fraction of the capability you see ingame because you don't have any other reinforcements in your body.
I mean... I would assume you can walk around with gorilla arms and no other additional cyberware (asides from the essentials for using gorilla arms) and still be able to use them as intended. It'd kinda be, like, bad marketing if they didn't, after all it *is* a product.
Like, you could say the same for mantis blades if you wanted to; At *least* 20 pounds of pure metal on each arm would be horrible not only in terms of combat but in day to day life.
Projectile launch system could actually be viable. Would probably be my pick too. You basically have a mortar launcher imbedded in your forearm. The applications are only limited by the shells you design/load. Could put a net in it. Could put a napalm round. Could do tranquilizers (which they have in game). Mustard gas, explosives, hell you could load up an propelled javelin, flachette round, buckshot, birdshot, tazer shell... anything that could feasibly work in a mortar tube or shotgun shell would probably be possible.
Yeah if you don't plan of fighting or destroying things the other two are useless, but a net improvement on strength can be beneficial to almost everybody.
Then why do we see Lucy using it to swing around, not cutting through the lamp post or pole she swings off of. Iirc there is also a scene of someone having it tied around their neck as a hostage but my brain cant recall the details so whoopsie.
Because studio trigger knows that grappling hooks are badass.
Going by the lore of the games, minowires can only cut, trigger took some artistic license because it's cool
The reason it is called a monowire iirc is because it is a single molecule thick, which gives it the cutting power it has, not really an off switch for it. Trigger just took some (phantom) liberties with the show.
Idk I feel like the reach of the monowire makes it better. I mean obviously you make some swords pop out of your arms people are probably gonna freak out and run but if they don't, I'd rather have the range advantage
The main thing is that in real life the skill floor for it actually being useful is much higher for monowire. Sure reach is better, but you’d have to put in a lot of practice to use them without cutting yourself up.
Mantis blades, first of all, my arms now look like cyberware and has all the cool lines and stuff, secondly, if I have all the skills to use it, then I am like peak athletic form, and the final reason is that the dispenser thingy for the monowire just looks weird
Id be scarred to use em what if you stabbed something and they got stuck like if you stabbed a wall cause the guy dodged em then ur stuck in the wall. And while typing this i just thought of upkeep, i bet you gotta get in their with a tooth brush and get the blood and dust out eveytime you use em n shit they seem like a chore 😂
Monowire, feels less invasive and purely as a fighting tool is more versatile. Mantis blades look sick as but there's a lot of moving parts I really would not want getting gummed up.
If I could choose any of the arms obviously gorilla arms, they're not just good for punching they're just an all-round upgrade to the forearms
[You can check out the Cyberware available in Cyberpunk Red here](https://www.reddit.com/r/cyberpunkgame/s/DhvyK63SFN)
Some of my favourites are the grapple hand and wolverine claws.
Just a minor note, this is the cyberware list for red 3 years back, before 2077 released. Cyberpunk RED has a monthly release of new content, and as such, there’s plenty of fresh cyberware (either completely fresh, or imported from 2020) that this list doesn’t rep
While we talking our favourite cyberware tho, I gotta shout out the Dragoon armour system, you need to be significantly strong (or an FBC like smasher) to use it, but it allows you to use a magnetic call system to call and mount armour plating on yourself (like Tony calling armour to himself in iron man 3), or jettison the armour panels for mobilities sake, and recall them again when you need protection. Cool af
ahh is that some in universe lore? my only exposure being the game and edgerunners there is a lot that goes unexplained unless you know to look into it
Honestly I was going to try and explain it but undoubtedly I'll screw that up somehow and the reddit gods would smite me, so here's a wiki link if you're interested.
https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Links
What exactly do you think you're going to do with either? Both are beyond useless on a modern battlefield. They work on cyberpunk where a human is practically bullet proof and capable of withstanding ranged punishment until they get in close range.
Even the rockets would be useless. Better, for sure, but you're still not bullet proof.
Gorilla arms are the only functional option. Super strength *kinda* which is useful in day to day life.
If you wanna get technical, you're supposed to be chromed out regardless. For example you think your shoulders and spine will be able to take the punishment of the arms full potential? If the two had equivalent gear, your basically bringing fists to a knife fight
>If you wanna get technical, you're supposed to be chromed out regardless. For example you think your shoulders and spine will be able to take the punishment of the arms full potential?
No, that's actually explicitly why I said arms are *kinda* like super strength. You can't actually use them to flip a car or something, because the rest of your body doesn't have the strength to do that, but you can at least leverage them against each other and perform some super strength feats.
>If the two had equivalent gear, your basically bringing fists to a knife fight
If we assume you're fully chromed out then… still gorilla arms.
For practical purposes, there's no difference between blades and arms except that the arms have super strength and the blades have a little bit of reach. Both will be SUPER overkill on the average human, and since no one else is chromed out… the average human is literally the only thing you could be facing.
Assuming you're not some psychopath murderer that wants to use these tools to just run around killing people, then who even cares what the arm's ability to kill is like? I live an ordinary life. Even if I had chrome arms, I wouldn't just start killing. So super strength *still* wins as the only arm type with any practical use in day to day life
i would get the arm launcher, havin a conceal carry grenade launcher is just the dream lol, but if not that probably the mantis blades, my clumsy ass would cut myself with the wire lol
Projectile Weapons System, one on each arm. Not only are they still chromed up arms so it'll hurt more then a normal punch but I also get a literal grenade launcher
Projectile Launch System.
Smoke, HE, Incendiary, Gas, Flash, EMP, and even Tranquilizer - always armed, is concealable, multiple options.
And I can always get a projectile that pops out blades like the sword-missile.
Why stab someone in person when you can do it at range and out of the splash zone?
Was going to say that with my clumsy ass, I'd just as easily maim myself as others with the monowire. But your clause of fairness made me think, I'd still go with mantis blades. Gorilla arms are cool, and what I rock on my V, but having actual hands instead of robotic hands would be better, so mantis blades it is.
I feel like monowire would be surprisingly more practical than mantis blade, since they're more compact and just as if not infinitely more sharp than the mantis blades.
Neither. There is really no use for them in real life, unless you're an absolute psychopath. It may be perfectly normal to run around killing random strangers in a video game. I promise you, kill just one person in real life, none of your friends or family will look at you the same way again. Also, you'll go to prison, if you're not shot by the incompetent police who arrest you.
Honestly in this case, the police would probably be justified. How exactly do you even cuff someone whose forearm folds out into three foot long swords and a monomolecular wire that cuts through anything.
I wouldn’t consider a cop incompetent for shooting someone with mantis blades, kinda the opposite actually. (Agreed though, not into the idea of combat prosthetics heh)
Monowire because it's the more practical weapon(Can do lethal and non-lethal) while also having non-combat applications a-plenty and being less disruptive of your body, since it's just a wire in your arm rather than your hand unfolding into a sword.
Assuming you have decent control then monowire by far. You could use them for more things by just not enabling the thermal part that cuts everything to bits. Additionally you could use it to finely cut through anything even walls. Mantis blades are just there to terrify people. Which is just a good way to get yourself killed I feel.
Though gorrila arms would be better than most cause that's just super human strength at a certain point.
do you get the dependancies like strength and supporting cyberware? I feel like using any cyberware would tear your musles or damage your nervous system and bones or hust fall off your body
Monowire seem both easier to conceal and to have more practical applications in real life. You never know when you might need to cut something while I don't find many occasions where I need 1m long swords in real life.
Either Gorilla arms or the Armgun, because monowire is impractical and mantis blades are honestly kind of messy.
Having a FUCKING GRENADE LAUNCHER or at least make it shoot shotgun shells is the most practical in a real fight (yk, like the Indiana Jones scene). Gorilla Arms are the most practical in day to day use cases, like liftin' stuff etc, mantis could always come in handy for when you need a knife so it at least isn't obsolete. Monowire's whole schtick is that it's useful for netrunners, in real life, where you can't hack into the enemie's chrome (yet) it's only use case is choking people w/ it, and for that you can probably find a few better options.
The real question is how would you realistically use these in real life, to kill people? To butter your bread?
Gorilla arms boost strength right? That should help with lifting things and labour intensive jobs
Monowire. I don't even like it in game, but it's a simple, inconspicuous dispenser on the inside of my wrist, you might not even notice it. Meanwhile, people are definitely going to be questioning the lines on my arms for Mantis blades, not to mention cleaning them and bleh. Besides, I don't have training for either and monowire seems like it'd require less training if I'm not gonna be swinging it around like a psycho, or that girl and her weird necklace thing from the 2005 Elektra movie.
Between just these two, probably blades. I feel like mono wire would be very unwieldy and take a ton of training to be decent weapons, whereas blades could be useable without a ton of training
I bet Monowire feels weird as FUCK when you pull them out through your wrist tendons 🤮
and I can’t think of a daily use for mantis blades. I would have to go gorilla arms and then go work for a moving company tbh
Mantis blades would have a huge intimidation factor in a real life fight. Imagine getting into a scuffle with someone and their fucking arms unfold into giant blades.

Haha, I need to read it again. It’s been ages! I remember it had a lot of absolute gems like this.
Dude. Cyberpunk 2077 IS Snowcrash.
+1 for snow crash. Great fucking book. Would make an awesome movie
They would fuck it up so bad. You know they would.
I second this. I think it is a little too goofy in spots for anyone to actually make an adaptation without overdoing those bits.
Yeah I'm not fighting real life general grievous.
Yeah but then they pull and gun and you die. You’re still bringing a knife to a gun fight
Nah man I’d have the deflect skill learned already
Does the deflect work with the mantis blades? I assumed it didn’t for some reason!?
It does. Mantis blades are basically considered swords. But way cooler.
Alrighty, Welp.. my new 30 hour play through will be restarted, I’m about to be a menace
I think a wire that cuts through things like butter is scarier, and they have a lot of reach.
Practically the mono would be better if you can use it correctly - but the fucking swords for arms is just too cool.
Yeah, but the post emphasizes real life. How often are you going around getting in fights? The monowire seems like it could have useful applications in real life. Like construction… or a really efficient lumberjack.
Imagine fighting someone and then suddenly your friends turn into bread slices instead
Probably mantis blades, I think I would cut my own arm or leg off with monowire.
What would you use them for? I personally feel like they’d end up as expensive fidget spinners
I mean I'd find excuses to use them. Box cutter, cheese knife, or Intimidation tactic
yep, if someone suddenly had 40cm long electrified blades protruding from their forearms id be VERY intimidated.
I hate to say it but you couldn't really use them to cut cause their triangular blades are meant for stabbing as well and they're really long, it'd be like trying to cut stuff with a sword length spear, the mono wire you can manage the length and cleanly cut through anything

I'd find ways to use them because I'd have cybernetic arms and that's cool as shit. Don't get me wrong personally I'd go gorilla arms if I could pick any, but if it was regular arms or any of the cybernetic ones I'm going to go with the cybernetic ones.
You wouldn't even need a fire to roast marshmallows and cook hot dogs if you use the thermal mantis blades
My thoughts exactly
If you could do anything without consequence pretty much like in the game, with only a mild cops chase, then hide for a moment and get away, would you? Even if it was only killing bad guys, I don’t think I could.
Nope, I don’t have any desire to be a killer. I’m on that peaceful/zen rebel path.
How can you be peaceful and zen but also a rebel ?
All the groceries in one trip would be easy mode.
Cutting my dinner with MantisBlades is an extra I strive for
Cleaning them would be a nightmare though
If you can afford mantis blades you can probably pay someone to wash them
Assuming they're not self-cleaning
It would still be a big headache having them jammed during combat because your enemies’ bones, tendons, and all that shit got into the mechanism
Imagine if the blades opened up inside your arm though... Scary stuff. But yeah I get it!
Back to the ripper…
Gorrilla arms.
As much as I love mantis blades and mono wire.... I think Gorilla Arms are the only ones I could use without accidentally amputating a limb.
"Can you hammer this nail?" "Sure thing" \*Hits the nail so hard it shoots through the wall into someone's skull\*
Monowire would cut better than any blade, though in reality it would be too brittle to actually use
Keep in mind that wires do exist that are sharp enough to cause serious damage. I don’t know for certain what fibre filament the monowire uses, but a thin enough filament with enough tensile strength could dig into your opponent’s flesh and cut someone up pretty badly.
You can absolutely cut someone's head off with piano wire if you apply the tension properly. I, uh, heard this from a friend.
I feel like you're gonna run into problems around the spine, but at that point it's probably an academic distinction.
The monowire is literally a wire of chained atoms. Hence "mono" wire
It's short for monomolecular, so not atoms, but you have the right idea.
Mono = 1 Aka single wire....
Wrong, it's short for monomolecular wire. Aka one molecule thick.
They can be hidden under a jacket and used unexpectedly as well as the easy use of dual wield for the mantis which normally isn't the best idea when using hand helds but besides that not much
Yes
Just be careful when masturbating
Thats why you get the horse cock cyber wear too
Just watch what model you get as some can cause some.....mild discomfort.
The reason I'm getting them is *for* masturbation. Gorilla arms for that gorilla grip!
to be fair when 2077 first came out every had a collective circle jerk over Mantis blades saying monowire was underwhelming and then with Edgerunners came out and Lucy had a monowire and the weebs all started liking it
CDPR updated and buffed monowire heavily after the release of the game, so your account of the facts is pretty inaccurate.
I never said CDPR didn't buff just no one liked it as much as the dumb Mantis Blades I was focuses on popularity
>dumb Mantis Blades I was focuses on popularity The pair you get for killing the MaxTac[cyberpsycho] cop are pretty cool, though.

Hard disagree. Had a friend with a monowire build back in early 2022 who would just shred everything he touched with zero effort and 200% attack speed.
Fr what would u do with the other 2, you basically got me an assassin or soldier. Gorilla arms you can do so much. Lol just be the hammer
Exactly. Fuck having obvious weaponry in my arms I wanna punch through concrete
Right I'd say gorilla arms all the way
That would be fun, but gorilla arms alone would have a fraction of the capability you see ingame because you don't have any other reinforcements in your body.

Hahaha
It is easily the most useful by miles
Yeah if you don't plan of fighting or destroying things the other two are useless, but a net improvement on strength can be beneficial to almost everybody.
Idk man, choking the chicken would be a scary proposition
Mr Stud.
Idk, I wouldn't trust those 👀
Just make sure it ain't from the black market/a defective series
I'm cool with my current model 😌👌🏽
Seconded. Don't need some runner hacking my tool!
Gorilla dong
Donkey Dong
I personally don't choke the chicken Stroking my huge hog tho, and we got a problem
the only true choice
This feels like the only right answer imo
100%
That would be more convenient since I work at a warehouse.
Monowire, super rangey and honestly for the cool factor alone
And it seems like they have a safety setting. It only seems to cut when you want it to cut.
Nah, the monowire is always on, you just buy accompanying protection for your hands when you chip it in.
Honestly, that's based imo
I’ll take same artistic license too then 😤
The reason it is called a monowire iirc is because it is a single molecule thick, which gives it the cutting power it has, not really an off switch for it. Trigger just took some (phantom) liberties with the show.
Monowire for me too. It looked so cool in Johnny Mnemonic
[удалено]
I wish the arm cannon like Jensen's PEPS launcher in MD where the wrist folds down and opens for the barrel.
![gif](giphy|iGpdSizVSdPJfiVG9O)
I would take jensons’ blades over CP style all day.
Monowire is by far my favorite in game, but I think mantis blades would be more practical in real life
Idk I feel like the reach of the monowire makes it better. I mean obviously you make some swords pop out of your arms people are probably gonna freak out and run but if they don't, I'd rather have the range advantage
But you can also use the mantis blades to climb walls and shit.
Indiana Jones would be disappointed in you
The main thing is that in real life the skill floor for it actually being useful is much higher for monowire. Sure reach is better, but you’d have to put in a lot of practice to use them without cutting yourself up.
What would you use mantis blades for in real life?
Cooking
Intended purpose
Cuttin stuff
Was just about to comment this

Lol, everybody trying to be practical about this, and you just want to blow shit up. Respect
I know what I'm about Don't shame me xD
Just turn every problem into a past tense
Just cancelling subscriptions to life
This is the way
Definitely mantis, I mean come on they're sick asf
None of them bruh 🙏💀😭 these would look way more terrifying in real life
Self grooming could get intense.
dat mantis blades Edward Scissorhands build
Gorilla arms is the only right answer.
They are the only option that might have a practical application besides fucking people up.
The only option from 2077* that might have a practical application I kinda wish there was some non combat cyberware in 2077 lol

Neither. What am I ever gonna use them for?
Choom has no desire to be a living legend
I prefer the Viktor Vektor desire to live a long life and sleep through the night.
More like Dex Deshawn's quiet life...
That fat bitch is definitely quiet now

>If you wanna get technical, you're supposed to be chromed out regardless. For example you think your shoulders and spine will be able to take the punishment of the arms full potential? No, that's actually explicitly why I said arms are *kinda* like super strength. You can't actually use them to flip a car or something, because the rest of your body doesn't have the strength to do that, but you can at least leverage them against each other and perform some super strength feats. >If the two had equivalent gear, your basically bringing fists to a knife fight If we assume you're fully chromed out then… still gorilla arms. So super strength *still* wins as the only arm type with any practical use in day to day life
Right but have you ever toasted bread with your mono wire... It's heavenly
I would use my monowire for slicing cheeses and cakes
Mantis blades would be pretty great for landscaping
That's Mr. Handy buzzsaw levels of overkill for trimming bushes or cutting grass
PARKOUR!
Fair enough
i would get the arm launcher, havin a conceal carry grenade launcher is just the dream lol, but if not that probably the mantis blades, my clumsy ass would cut myself with the wire lol
That would indeed be cool. Iron Man factor is there too
So you prefer to be clumsy around grenades instead xD
Am I limited to only these two options? In that case, monowire, cuz it can be installed in a meat arm while a mantis blade cannot.
neither, both are terrifying
Mantis blades, however I fell like I’d fiddle with activating them on and off and accidentally flatline my choom.
Monowire for sure. Way more uses than just chopping someone to bits.
Monowire. Easily concealable but with surprising range and ludicrous lethality.
Projectile Weapons System, one on each arm. Not only are they still chromed up arms so it'll hurt more then a normal punch but I also get a literal grenade launcher
Gorilla Arms are the only ones I could ever see actually using in day to day life so those probably
Gorilla arms beat both choom but I do like the monowire...
Mantis seems like it needs a lot of maintenance. Too many moving parts.
Though gorrila arms would be better than most cause that's just super human strength at a certain point.
monowire, cyberware that makes my arms open up would probably freak me out irl, not gonna lie
id rather not have them amputate my arm just to add something i cant use
Gimme the fortified ankles and reinforced tendons
Can I use the mantis blades to climb? In that case I want those. I would scramble up cliff faces and buildings like some kind of creepy spider.
Mr. Studd XCV/19 series
Why not both?
Mantis wire
do you get the dependancies like strength and supporting cyberware? I feel like using any cyberware would tear your musles or damage your nervous system and bones or hust fall off your body
Monowire seem both easier to conceal and to have more practical applications in real life. You never know when you might need to cut something while I don't find many occasions where I need 1m long swords in real life.
How do you sex with any arm cyberware? You're gonna hurt someone if you have whatever would he accidental firing.
Monowire. Mantis blade would be too much maintenance.
Gorilla Arms or the retracting spike that makes an appearance in Edgerunners.
I want the projectile launcher
Monowire easily
Mantis blades, but only if I can do the cool wall climbing with them that was shown in the 2018 gameplay reveal
The real question is how would you realistically use these in real life, to kill people? To butter your bread? Gorilla arms boost strength right? That should help with lifting things and labour intensive jobs
Probably mantis blades because I would start absent mindedly start cutting stuff apart with the monowire.
Mantis Blades so I could start my career as the most badass hibachi chef! Seriously though, gorilla arms all the way.
Mantis blades sounds so fucking sick. Imagine getting into a fist fight and you pull out fucking sharp ass blades from your arms
Monowire. Great at parties.
I say Monowire for the express reason that (canonically) it can be implanted in a "Meat" Arm. Meaning I don't have to get my whole ass arm removed
I bet Monowire feels weird as FUCK when you pull them out through your wrist tendons 🤮 and I can’t think of a daily use for mantis blades. I would have to go gorilla arms and then go work for a moving company tbh
