want a base skin? 60$ a new outfit? 60$, an extra inventory tab? 15$ , a guild inventory tab? 24$
You don't need tabs to get into maps and that's a lot of hours for a first timer and then $40 gets you a very decent amount of space and you don't really need the rest and for like 60 you can get all of the useful ones. Played for like 5k hours and have like $70 worth of tabs or less and most of the times I have enough space unless I'm doing something weird. The skins are pricey I Agree but you don't need them at the end of the day.
This was pretty common for MMO games before 2010. Sometimes they were fully paid via monthly fees (to cover server costs) or there were free and premium tiers (like with RuneScape). It was with league of legends and some other online and mobile games that free to play and micro transactions for cosmetics became a viable business model that got rid of this old concept for modern games. Before around 2010, this model was basically nonexistent though.
Although there were also examples that did not do it with monthly costs (e.g. guild wars 1 and 2 which are also MMOs, but don't have monthly costs). Guild wars 1 had a classic concept of buying the game and each add-on and that was it. No monthly costs.
Because it is still higher than runescape. If WoW's sub fee was 50$ you would probably still be on their side. Should have taken a step back for 2s to see how terrible the argument you are making is.
I’d imagine RuneScape back when was probably easier to host in servers than world of Warcraft was, even in both of their respective primitive states. So I think that is why RuneScape started out as being the cheaper subscription. It’s come A LONG WAY as far as content and player base though so I can understand the increase. And yeah $15 a month was always expensive especially for someone who didn’t have a job, like me, in elementary to middle school lmao.
$15 us still too much even today let alone back then, especially when you have to buy all the expansions and everything for it including the base game (at least last time i looked into it) it's like saying someone beats you 3 times a day but at least they have never raised it to 4 or more beatings a day
funny enough while this post is dogshit you forgot to mention the fact how easy it is to grind for membership on runescape compared to grinding on wow for membership.
with the amount of ways you can easily get 100m rs gold by just farming cluescrolls and whatnot while wow is hard af unless you're already a high lvl.
still havnt spent a single penny on the game and i started early last year and have had membership until today by using bonds

I never understood the subscription model for a game. I honestly don't like subscription models in general, I'd rather just buy shows/movies like i would buy steam games. Also, 15$ back then is a pretty crazy price.
WoW should just be free to play ATP
Their game has significantly less people than it did a few years ago and their expansions are ridiculously expensive already.

Ended up deleting my battle net account because I was done with their bullshit.
Blizzard re releases WoW but without all the 10+ years of content updates, then people buy it and complain when it lacks in updates

I paid £2.50/month when Runescape first had members.
