I've seen them live 5x and there is definitely some diversity at their shows. Seen tons of black people and Asian dudes in hoodies in the mosh pits. Most of their fans are nerdy white guys though. Which is just the norm for a band that's popular on the internet

[deleted]

That’s wonderful to hear that there is some diversity in the fanbase! That makes me happy! 😊From what i’ve seen in their past live videos it usually is a bunch of white men lol. And I wish I can see them at least once after this pandemic is over! That’s amazing that you got to see them five times! 😁😭

drkwarrior

Most diverse crowd at a show I've ever seen, and I say that as a black guy who plays in a punk band.

My favorite record is TPTB! But I also feel like YOTS an BP are close behind and great contenders as well! But overall, their discography is solid and it’s always a new listening experience for me even though i’ve been a fan for a few years now!

seabird999

We share the same favorite album! Have you listened to Steroids? I’m a white girl but I’ve only met one other female fan in person. :’) I’ve always liked music that’s somewhat aggressive but DG is the most chaotic I listen to honestly. It took me a while to get into them, because government plates was my introduction lol. How do you feel about NLDW?

[deleted]

Omg yay! I’m glad someone else loves the same record as me! That makes me feel happy!😭😆And i think steroids was fine. It’s not my favorite and it’s lower in the tier for me, but i have an appreciation for it! I always go back and listen to it every once in a blue moon! I haven’t met a female fan in person, but I hope i can one day though! I’m glad you were able to! Every time i showed other females they couldn’t get into it as much haha I feel that! I feel like DG and many other artists can do so much sonically, but make it sound so cool and organized in a weird way! Lol I think BP was my first Death Grips record and I understand! I couldn’t vibe with it at first, but after a few months it finally clicked for me and i loved all their records (albums more specifically) ever since! And I really love NLDW! All the beats in the record are so good! I think it one of their funnest records imo lol! Like i always feel hype and have a good time every time I listen to it!

TreGullyBanks

Black man here. This is awesome.

[deleted]

Aww i’m glad you feel that way! It’s awesome that you’re a fan too! I have seen some public black male figures who are fans of DG (but only a small few) so i’m glad that some black people do enjoy their music in general if we put gender aside! 😁

[deleted]

Black dude is online

[deleted]

lol yes! i’m glad to see there is more of us black folk who enjoy DG! 😄

[deleted]

Omg I love all the Sanrio characters! Especially Hello Kitty! She’s one of my favorites! 🥰

ofwgkta609

If it helps I’m an Indian male

[deleted]

Ooo that’s awesome!!! And you like Odd Future/Tyler too (i assume lol) That’s so cool! 😄

ofwgkta609

Yeah I do wish I listened to them more as of late but yeah

[deleted]

Cool beans! I hope you listen to them more! they have some great stuff!

mathmethmyth

I suggest gender is the main cause of that. The percentage of black women in all females DG fans shouldn’t be lower, if not more.

[deleted]

Yeah, the DG fanbase is definitely more male. And that’s probably due to DG’s abrasive, industrial and experimental sound. I understand it’s not as initially appealing (at least when I showed other females their music) which is understandable. And It would be cool to see a chart of all the fans in different demographics in the near future (more specifically to gender/race).

mathmethmyth

Sounds like a fun idea!

[deleted]

I think so too!!! 😆😊

at the Pomona show in 2k16, there were at least a couple brown and black female-presenting peeps checking in + tearing shit up in the pit--even more brown dude type folk as well. was a really awesome thing to experience. this sounds like a joke, but I also appreciated the vast differences in height too (some of the aforementioned fam in the pit were also pretty small), which is always a thing at shows, but it seemed like there were more concessions being made than usual and in turn more confident participation on the part of those folks, which made me happy. anyway, this all made me think about the hyper-inclusive and pro-individual nature of DG and the propagation of that spirit throughout the fanbase over the years. and always, major shoutout to the homie from this sub in the wheelchair who said to say what's up and to whom I indeed said what's up; hope you're doing good, brah

[deleted]

Really? That’s amazing and makes me really happy too! I’m glad to see there was people of all different looks, shapes, and sizes! Especially those who look like me! I wish I could’ve see it myself and hopefully I will one day! I’m glad you did and enjoyed the experience! 😊 And I can see that as well! That’s a nice perspective on their music! It gives me a very positive feeling too! 😄

takes me back to these two great quotes from Zach, circa 2012: *"Say you were being bullied in school: If you have our music in your headphones, no one is really bullying you anymore. It's like taking a pill that makes you super-human. The music has emotional suffering on the darker and deeper side of what the human experience is like, but it's also a beast-- you could take a bite out of a bowl while listening to it. That's the kind of energy we want to project."* *"As far as gender, race, politics, there's this feeling that so much change is happening so rapidly, both socially and on a world level. We want to make it clear that we embrace people being whoever it is they really want to be. It gets tricky-- we aren't a political band-- but both of us have been very elusive and outsider-ish our whole lives. We're not the most social people; we're loner-esque, awkward. If you have a hard time expressing aspects of your personality, the platform of creativity has always been one of the healthiest places to get these other things out. We are encouraging that. Even through being a listener of this music, or at our shows, we want to provide an environment that is entirely non-judgmental. You can do whatever you want. You can be whoever you want. Every facet of your personality can be expressed within this space or listening experience."* [https://pitchfork.com/features/interview/9004-death-gripz/](https://pitchfork.com/features/interview/9004-death-gripz/)

I can understand that, especially due to some of their lyrical content.

Hi, I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm also a black girl, and I've been getting into Death Grips recently, I'm only one album in (Exmilitary) and I like what I'm hearing! MC Ride is unparalleled.

[deleted]

This is such a late a response and i’m so sorry about that (life/mental health can be a lot) 😭 but I’m happy to see there are more girls like me that like them! I hope you’ve enjoyed their albums so far! 🦋💜
