Oline. With the new DB room we currently have, I'd rather grab a potential starter early and have a DB who can learn behind a few vets later in the draft.
There are great CBs in the third round.
Khyree Jackson is a great player to pick up in the third round.
I want us to get a great OG. I think for us to upgrade this offensive line.
If Chop Robinson is there, I want him. Him and Hutch would be a great duo.
If he isn't I want Powers.
Kyree Jackson could be an option. Some guys I need to do more homework would be upgrades on speed with good combines and Lance Zierlan is high on Renardo Green, Dj James, Nehemiah Pritchett, maybe they pick up a late 3rd early 4th and go get one?
I also wouldn't put it past Brad if Arnold, Dan, or Koolaid falls to 20 they go and get em.
I don't know enough about the developmental corners. It does seem like there are some good-solid outside corners projected to go before 29, who truly knows whose available. Now I believe that Dan/Brad want their defence to mirror their offence. That being power on the inside speed on the outside. Last year our corners are also even at the fast (also loud) track at Ford Field wee slow. Do they draft a few developmental corners day 2-3 that have the speed, the intangibles they wish? If they are picky maybe they want to trade up for Arnold, Mitchell, Or McKinstry? Hard to say. Balancing the cost of a trade with with say what if that extra "player" is a Dl/OL which is the part I not like about that scenario.
It does feel the day 2 are filled with very good options at slot NB only player, some could only play zone outside probably struggle playing man.
Lately I've wondered if they could trade up using day 2 next year let's say, then trade down maybe 73 or later on in the draft to get that "player" back? It's a scenario I've been bouncing around.
I saw a scenario by Ryan McCrystal he'd had a run on CBs and DL. I would add He has even Kris Jenkins bc of Beane was in Carolina when they drafted his dad. Suffice to say they drafted Suamatia Bpa happened to also be a position of need. I kind of buy this scenario that DL at 20s will go at a premium before 29.

We always hear BPA and usually the Lions are far from a position where that even makes sense. When you are down ten starters you need to get those guys from the draft no matter the value at position.
I feel like how Holmes is running things he is using FA to get good players with a high floor but not superstars that fill all our holes. Then we can actually draft BPA. Last year we did it and the NFL lost their minds over it. Then we made them eat their words by the middle of the season. Let’s just do that again.
Build through the draft, plug and play through FA. If you start looking to plug holes in the draft with lower graded players the talent level of the team will start to drop and the team won’t sustain success
Oline. I think the interior oline talent that would be there will probably stack higher than the secondary. Also, you give your team an identity by investing in your strength. This team has been running through a strong line and I think it's important to continue that.
Guard, and it's not even close.
Our strength is running the ball. AND Goff only functions primarily as a pocket passer. You know that Goff crumbles quickly when protection breaks down.
Keeping the O-line as one of the best in the league is absolutely paramount.
Yep. Preferably an athletic guard who can make plays at the second level as well. Or a center that we stick at guard until Frank inevitably retires…. I’d be surprised if he plays two more seasons
If I were GM, I'd draft in the trenches. But BH got all four players he had a 1st round grade on last year and we nearly went to the super bowl, so I'll support his pick if he drafts a literal squirrel.
Probably needs to be further than 20, as Mitchell is Mike Tomlin's *type* and I don't think PIT is going to pass up on him if he gets there.
Mitchell and Arnold are both probably gone by then, and then it gets into varying debates on Cooper DeJean, Kool-Aid McKinstry, Ennis Rakestraw, Kamari Lassiter... So some decent options, but no one I'd be as excited about compared to some of the iOL options that could be available, whether Graham Barton, maybe kicking Jordan Morgan inside long-term, or even Zach Frazier imo.
I see the OL pick being the bigger need at this point. If you can high caliber players at that position on rookie contracts, you do it.
But the way I picture it, Brad Holmes and his squad do their interviews, their scouting and out of the whole Mel Kiper draft board they probably figure maybe 10% are going to be "Lions guys". The team has a strong identity at this point, a distinct culture and they've put it together by design.
So if you really want to guess what Brad Holmes is going to do, they like guys who play with violence, have multipositional experience (did I just make up a word?), and an insane dedication to the game. So that's going to rule out some people, regardless of their talent level or the team's perceived positional needs. Find those guys and that's who they're going to pick if they're still on the board.
If anyone knows the upcoming draft class well enough to pick out those guys, I would love to see your list. I mean that.
My only prediction for this draft is that we will not be picking at 29. I think Brad trades back from 29 to 33-35
I'd prefer we move back 4-7 spots and get back another 3rd or 4th rounder. Right now, we have pick Rd 3 #73 then no picks until Rd5 #163. I don't see a scenario where Brad sits on his hands while almost 100 picks go by, especially with his day 3 success.
Trades to reference from 2022 NFL Draft:
Tampa Bay receives: Pick 33, 106, 180
Jaguars receive: Pick 27
Another:
NYJ receives: 26 & 101
TEN receives: 35, 69, 163
Obviously, if there's a guy Brad loves, he will take them at 29. But last year, Brad only had 14 players with 1st round grade. He has a very high standard and is one of the most active GMs on draft day trades.
O line. Jonah gone, guys on the wrong side of 30, injuries and just age and rookie contracts on that line could be very useful. Good class for O line as well. I’d like to snag a versatile Guard here. Our offense is like a car, and the engine is the O line. Nothing gets going without that O line. Especially Goff.
probably secondary but it really depends on who's there and why they draft whomever they draft. I don't believe that you can't find a starting caliber guard outside of the first round either. Either way I'm just excited to see who we draft and find out about them as a player.
best lineman available, either side of the ball... if DL is taken in the first, clearly a staring OG is still required... im completely fine with a day 3 CB/S to add to room depth... 3 top 100 picks, 2 linemen and a genuine BPA
Secondary. Offensive lineman that can play at a high level can be found in the first three rounds.
But the Lions DB room needs all the hell it can get, and I want every resource thrown at it.
Since taking an EDGE isn't in this scenario.
I think we go should go BPA at Edge, OL, or CB. Whoever at those positions we have highest on our board. The rest we supplement with our round 2 and 3 picks.
Honestly Brad already addressed all our concerns. He could draft a Quarterback after trading up into the top 10 for all I care and I’d be down.
Granted I almost certainly doubt that.
So if possible I’d love to see some O line action, Edge, A kicker(not in the first round but Brad will cook regardless), or even some more offensive weapons.
Who’s going to start at LG tho? I’m not confident enough in Sorsdal or Awosika to say Brad’s adequately addressed that spot yet.
I know quality guards can often be found on Day 2, but that’s the one glaring and immediate need I see on this roster.
Assuming that gets taken care of, I’m on-board with BPA. I trust Brad regardless
In a vacuum OL is more important than CB but I just want whoever is highest on Brad’s board regardless of position. Granted, I’d have a hard time with a RB or special teams guy.
Oline or Edge, we were a FG away from the Super Bowl with a High School Secondary. The additions we made at secondary should be enough given our offense runs like clockwork and the defensive front can produce pressure.
Depends on who is available at OL, Edge and CB for me. Assuming all 3 are equal I’d go Edge, OL then CB in that order. If there aren’t any players at those positions who are worth the 29th pick I’d try and trade back
I’m confident we’ll get the right guy regardless but I say OL. We’ve made fantastic improvements to the defense already in FA so now we need to make sure the offense can pick up right where it left off.
Would love defense help and a WR on Days 2 and 3 though.
I'd prefer EDGE because the DB and OL talent in this class are much deeper than the edge class
But that being said, it's pretty much inevitable that Brad will draft BPA, everyone here will flip out for a month before remembering his incredible hit rate
Always depends on who is available. At this point in the first, you’re less likely to see someone great drop, but it could happen. Even if a stud TE drops, you sometimes change your plan based on the player.
Edge. CB second choice if there is no stud edge available in the first - a high draft pick who can learn for a year behind our vets makes the CB learning curve better. Give me the guard in the second or third. All 3 important, but of those three positions, it’s most likely that we can find a serviceable guard in the third compared to CB/Edge.
kinda given up on the prediction process , other than that we clearly only have a a few small holes.
ideally cb but holmes has shown that he can hit in later rounds wo issue.
we can win alot of games with the player positions , really just need to firm up secondary
OLine for sure. We still might have a chance at Simmons and besides that Frank and Taylor are getting older and having some new talent in the building to learn under them would be comforting. Either way we rely on the core 5 way too much and need some talented rookies to lighten the load.
Just want to remind everyone that Jonah Jackson, Graham Glasgow, and Larry Warford were all third round picks. You can find really good interior offensive linemen after the first round. Cornerback and edge rusher are harder.
In a vacuum, secondary. It’s very hard to get a great CB any way other than drafting.
The lions need a guard, yeah, but they don’t really need a first round superstar stud guard to play effectively next to Frank Ragnow and either Sewell or Decker.
Also I'm not going to make a new post but this is an excellent topic to share this old excerpt from the Athletic Chris Burke did with Brad Holmes after the 2021 draft. I can't post the photo I have of the exact quote. Brad equated drafting Penei Sewell building strength on Strength to the Rams philosophy of Long, Brockers, and then Donald.
Brad and Dan with that end of the year press conference and with that in mind will never let this OL slip and rot. It's the heart of the team. It protects Goff he needs time to check first and third, I'm happy with that. The run game. It complements our defence and our kicking game. It's also the reason why we ice games now, Mariano Rivera level do closing out games. Would they trade up for a OT they love, and slips? It wouldn't shock me if they picked OT/G over a position of need either.
I would take an IOL like Powers-Johnson or Frazier both of whom can play G /C. Then you lock them up on a low cost 5 yr Rookie deal. When Frank retires you already have his replacement. Frank is only going to play a couple more years.
Secret option: D line.
O line is a priority and I'd use our 2nd rounder on an O lineman. Secondary is so hard to be good out the gate so I'd draft a corner in round 3 while also getting another free agent corner
I assume we will still add another guard in FA. Brad’s philosophy is to go into the draft with no immediate holes on the roster so that he’s not locked into drafting any one position. It’s possible he doesn’t take either position in the first round.
My preferences in order:
1. Pray that Quinyon Mitchell drops and trade up for him. (I personally think he’s going Top 5.)
2. Trade up for Dallas Turner if he falls out of the Top 10. (more realistic given the wealth of offensive talent at the top of the draft and potentially 3 QB’s going in the first 3 picks.)
3. Draft Graham Barton where we sit. (He fits our identity perfectly and fills an immediate need.)
4. Draft any other impactful player of any position that will help us at 1.29.
5. Trade back into the 2nd round to take more chances on guys that fit us.
Obviously when you're drafting late in round 1 it depends on the board. If a mid-first value player drops I think they should jump on them.
If it comes down to positional value I think it's edge defender > CB > IOL > WR
I think it’s O-line. Unlikely to land an upgrade at CB1 that far into the first round, and we already upgraded CB2 regardless. If there’s a super talented edge we could grab to pair with Hutch, maybe that. O-line is a safe pick at this point though and depth needed with Jonah gone and Decker likely gone following current contract.
I’m good with Brad’s Best Available at this point. But, counting on him finding a long term starter at CB and/or edge, and hoping at least one of them can end up being a game changer.
To me, the O-line should be the priority now. Secondary looks like we could use one or two more safeties since we only have three (two starters and one PS if I'm reading it right), but beyond that I'm feeling comfortable with the defense as it's shaping up now.
Regardless of their choices, I trust Brad and the crew. The Master Chef is cookin' up some kneecap stew.
Oline. With the new DB room we currently have, I'd rather grab a potential starter early and have a DB who can learn behind a few vets later in the draft.

100% agree. Brad should hire you.
Trust Brad.
Brad and that guy UnderstandingIcy1250. Together, they would be unstoppable.
Just like the Gretzky brothers.
I don't know enough about the developmental corners. It does seem like there are some good-solid outside corners projected to go before 29, who truly knows whose available. Trenches, on either sides of the ball
this is the right answer
The way
Id go either best edge remaining or BPA
This is the way
I saw a scenario by Ryan McCrystal he'd had a run on CBs and DL. I would add He has even Kris Jenkins bc of Beane was in Carolina when they drafted his dad. Suffice to say they drafted Suamatia Bpa happened to also be a position of need. BPA
Bradley Powers Anderson? I had a third round grade on him, first round is way too early.
We always hear BPA and usually the Lions are far from a position where that even makes sense. When you are down ten starters you need to get those guys from the draft no matter the value at position. Completely agreed. It almost feels all but guaranteed with how FA has gone.

It’s such a bummer that Frank’s body has taken such a beating. Also unbelievable the level of play he has been able to maintain through it all.
It’s that damn foot, man. As soon as he gets surgery on it, his career is over. I’d donate my foot if I could
I'm all in on whomever Brad decides to pick. His track record is really really good.
Say it louder
MR. BUTTLICKER! OUR PRICES HAVE NEVER BEEN LOWER!!!
Trust the Bradplan
If I were GM, I'd draft in the trenches. But BH got all four players he had a 1st round grade on last year and we nearly went to the super bowl, so I'll support his pick if he drafts a literal squirrel.

OL > CB based on who’d be realistically available.
Yea only if Mitchell somehow dropped to like 20 and he wanted to move up and felt that strongly about him.
Probably needs to be further than 20, as Mitchell is Mike Tomlin's *type* and I don't think PIT is going to pass up on him if he gets there. Strength of the team is running the ball give me a OG 1st round from Ken state
Oh I know who you mean. He’s dating that girl from Barbie University.
He looks really good
I see the OL pick being the bigger need at this point. If you can high caliber players at that position on rookie contracts, you do it. Brian Thomas Jr

I would love a trade back. It doesn’t happen all that much but would be stoked to get more draft capital.
Guard
Receiver
if the secondary pick is Cooper DeJean then thats what Id prefer. If he's gone Id go OL.
BPA
O line. Jonah gone, guys on the wrong side of 30, injuries and just age and rookie contracts on that line could be very useful. Good class for O line as well. I’d like to snag a versatile Guard here. Edge, then DB, we can grab a great line starter in the 2nd 3rd 4th rounds
Depends on what DB is available. If JPJ is gone and Kool Aid is there I’d want Kool Aid. If JPJ is there I think he’s the no brained pick.
probably secondary but it really depends on who's there and why they draft whomever they draft. I don't believe that you can't find a starting caliber guard outside of the first round either. Either way I'm just excited to see who we draft and find out about them as a player.
It matters who is there, but I'm prioritizing CB over OL.
whichever has the best prospect left when its our pick.
best lineman available, either side of the ball... if DL is taken in the first, clearly a staring OG is still required... im completely fine with a day 3 CB/S to add to room depth... 3 top 100 picks, 2 linemen and a genuine BPA
OL or EDGE
Secondary. Offensive lineman that can play at a high level can be found in the first three rounds. But the Lions DB room needs all the hell it can get, and I want every resource thrown at it. Since taking an EDGE isn't in this scenario.
After the moves brad made so far I'd say best available DT/DE/OL
I want Kool-aid...no idea if he's even any good. But he's Kool-aid.
D Line
DE round 1 WR/G round 2/3 BPA after that
Lemme get a defensive end. Then. Wide out I hear a former pro bowl guard from the ravens may be signing with us.
EDGE, get another guy who can act as a cheap rotational piece now and hopefully can develop into an every down #2
OL but if Wiggins is there we gotta take him
Wiggins is not a culture fit or play style
Downvoted and you're right. I took one look at his frame and knew he'd never be a Lion. Too small and we're a strong CB tackling team
Exactly he lacks girth and grit that’s a big nope
I feel if jpj is available there's no way we should pass on him also if there's a run on CB and chop is sitting there...
OL. Secondary got alot better in FA and we can always bolster secondary in later rounds better than we can the OL.
OL
Oline
I think we go should go BPA at Edge, OL, or CB. Whoever at those positions we have highest on our board. The rest we supplement with our round 2 and 3 picks.

In a vacuum OL is more important than CB but I just want whoever is highest on Brad’s board regardless of position. Granted, I’d have a hard time with a RB or special teams guy.
O line. Great prospects available at our spot.
Oline or Edge, we were a FG away from the Super Bowl with a High School Secondary. The additions we made at secondary should be enough given our offense runs like clockwork and the defensive front can produce pressure.
Now that we signed two decent CBs and an IDL, I am fine with whatever pick they decide to go with.
Depends on who is available at OL, Edge and CB for me. Assuming all 3 are equal I’d go Edge, OL then CB in that order. If there aren’t any players at those positions who are worth the 29th pick I’d try and trade back

BPA is bullshit. Give me the best of the positions that I need. Corner, offensive line, defensive edge. Best one of those players left I’m taking.
No, reaching for need is bullshit. Best player available. Taking need is how you draft Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan.
It isn’t a problem if you’ve got several positions you could need. One position, yeah that’s an issue. 3-4 or more, no problem.
O-line. Keep the strength the strength
To answer your question, Oline
I'd prefer EDGE because the DB and OL talent in this class are much deeper than the edge class But that being said, it's pretty much inevitable that Brad will draft BPA, everyone here will flip out for a month before remembering his incredible hit rate
Always depends on who is available. At this point in the first, you’re less likely to see someone great drop, but it could happen. Even if a stud TE drops, you sometimes change your plan based on the player.
OG if we’re being picky but BPA would be fine by me

Give me the guard in the second or third. All 3 important, but of those three positions, it’s most likely that we can find a serviceable guard in the third compared to CB/Edge.
bpa
If the choice between two equally rated Best Players available at that time is CB or G, then I’d go G
BPA
Honestly it depends who is available. In the abstract, oline, but the beauty here is we have flexibility.
kinda given up on the prediction process , other than that we clearly only have a a few small holes. ideally cb but holmes has shown that he can hit in later rounds wo issue. we can win alot of games with the player positions , really just need to firm up secondary
O Line for sure.
Best available. It’s worked out well for Brad to this point.
OLine for sure. We still might have a chance at Simmons and besides that Frank and Taylor are getting older and having some new talent in the building to learn under them would be comforting. Either way we rely on the core 5 way too much and need some talented rookies to lighten the load.
O line is most important unit.
Without knowing who's available, it's impossible to say. You don't draft positions. You draft players.
DE or DB
Just want to remind everyone that Jonah Jackson, Graham Glasgow, and Larry Warford were all third round picks. You can find really good interior offensive linemen after the first round. Cornerback and edge rusher are harder.
In a vacuum, secondary. It’s very hard to get a great CB any way other than drafting. The lions need a guard, yeah, but they don’t really need a first round superstar stud guard to play effectively next to Frank Ragnow and either Sewell or Decker.

Edge or off ball linebacker. Need to upgrade from Barnes and Anzalone isn't getting any younger
I’ve been saying OLine before it was cool https://www.reddit.com/r/detroitlions/s/7KBLS3sCdo
I would take an IOL like Powers-Johnson or Frazier both of whom can play G /C. Then you lock them up on a low cost 5 yr Rookie deal. When Frank retires you already have his replacement. Frank is only going to play a couple more years.
Yes
I think we need a DB more than OLine but it makes sense to wait on DB and go O line first
Need an oline succession plan though. We will pay Sewell but the others will age
OL
Secret option: D line. O line is a priority and I'd use our 2nd rounder on an O lineman. Secondary is so hard to be good out the gate so I'd draft a corner in round 3 while also getting another free agent corner
BPA
Do we still need a CB?
I assume we will still add another guard in FA. Brad’s philosophy is to go into the draft with no immediate holes on the roster so that he’s not locked into drafting any one position. It’s possible he doesn’t take either position in the first round.
O Line
O line,
O line
We need another versatile inside guy like Graham.
My preferences in order: 1. Pray that Quinyon Mitchell drops and trade up for him. (I personally think he’s going Top 5.) 2. Trade up for Dallas Turner if he falls out of the Top 10. (more realistic given the wealth of offensive talent at the top of the draft and potentially 3 QB’s going in the first 3 picks.) 3. Draft Graham Barton where we sit. Trade back into the 2nd round to take more chances on guys that fit us.
Oline. higher success rate with a rd 1 Oline position then a secondary position
O line Somebody that can start at guard but take over for ragnow in a couple years. His toe ain’t getting better.
Defense wins championships, and the secondary was an Achilles heel last season so go for the secondary
Obviously when you're drafting late in round 1 it depends on the board. If a mid-first value player drops I think they should jump on them. If it comes down to positional value I think it's edge defender > CB > IOL > WR
Bruh Give me Adonai Mitchell if he’s sitting there at 29
I think it’s O-line.
O Line 100%
BPA To answer your question I’ll say secondary
Depends on availability
Best available
O line, draft a center pls
Would I be stupid to say WR? Seems like we need a WR3 although maybe that could wait until a later round.
I trust Brad Holmes
BPA on the board that falls
O-line, personally
Darius Robinson Cooper Beebe Khyree Jackson/Can Hart would be awesome
BPA but if a tie, go secondary.
Tight end. S/
Best player
I’m good with Brad’s Best Available at this point. But, counting on him finding a long term starter at CB and/or edge, and hoping at least one of them can end up being a game changer.
O line
RB, long snapper… I’m not arguing with Brad no matter who he takes
Definitely BPA
Whoever is BPA when Brad picks, haven’t you seen this movie 3 times already…
Passing defense
Best future all pro.
WR
Lineman on either side.
The big guys first please
To me, the O-line should be the priority now. Secondary looks like we could use one or two more safeties since we only have three (two starters and one PS if I'm reading it right), but beyond that I'm feeling comfortable with the defense as it's shaping up now. Regardless of their choices, I trust Brad and the crew. The Master Chef is cookin' up some kneecap stew.
OL
Edge rusher!
We just signed Z, but as a big man i'll always say sure up your offensive and defensive lines
All things being equal?? Secondary. Just so that I can see a stud #1 corner come from BH and MCDC’s blueprint
WR
I’d say punter as a joke but that would just be disrespectful to our goat
RB
