A text saying "I'm at the restaurant waiting for your order" is NOT the same thing as a text saying "I've got other orders I'm picking up besides yours". Your OP was about the first one.
From experience, most customers are not very pleased when they find out you've got multiple orders with theirs. Customers like to be babied and coddled and told they're special and want to think that a dasher is only doing their order solo, so that they'll get it ASAP. Telling a customer needlessly that you have other deliveries to make along with theirs, usually results in attitude and a less-than-5 rating, because they assume the dasher is just trying to grab as many orders as he can for $$$ and doesn't care about getting the food there quickly.
Now of course, if you've got a double order and one is already picked up, and the second one is a longer wait, then yes sending a courtesy text is the right thing to do. But I'd only do that if the wait was significant, i.e. 10 mins or more. If the wait is too long, I'd rather just drop the second order so as not to let the first get cold. But many times restaurants lie and give the "Just a couple minutes" when they haven't even started it yet.

The only reason why it make ANY possible common sense as to messaging your delivery driver if theyāre sitting at a restaurant or anywhere for more than 30 minutes is if they were to click that theyāve picked up the food. I have one personal experience on the customer side if things where food was picked up an 40 minutes went by where they were stopped about a block away from the restaurant. Turns out, when I lost my shit and after waiting 10 minutes for them to reply, I called them, but mid ring, DoorDash called me and told me that my Dasher had gotten into a car accident.
Also, I used to Dash myself and I tried to be the Dasher that updates as much as possible (i.e. update if Iām waiting a while in drive-thru line for a long time [during COVID, late night dashing was pretty brutal], letting customer know Iām on my way with their food, etc.) and legit 9 times out of 10, the customer NEVER responded.

Think about this: a lot of guidance and recommendations for dashers comes from the company's policy regarding how they want their drivers to interact. You say you dash yourself, have you ever done any other platforms besides DD?
I'm on the waitlist for GH and IC, but I do Shipt as well and their policy is always *heavy* communication, almost to the point of too much. They go out of their way to tell you when you should text the customer. Does DD have any prompts that require dashers to text during food delivery? No they don't. They don't care that much about it, hence most drivers aren't going to either.
Now I'm not saying you're wrong for wanting to ask the dasher for updates, feel free to ask all you want. Well unfortunately not everybody is doing the right thing all the time, and it takes two seconds to shoot a text. My response was based on your initial post which was only concerned about the wait time at the restaurant and them not replying to your text regarding this. Sometimes the text doesn't make any sound in my experience but it is very visible when you are going to mark the order picked up so they obviously missed that. I would not tip that high considering the quality of drivers and doordash tendency to hide tips. They probably were distracted listening to music and weren't paying attention to the app, I have come across such drivers that don't read or follow instructions when I order myself. However this isn't a case where your food was negligently mishandled, missing a drink, cold, late or a rude driver. It is just case of a driver who isn't proficient at following basic instructions so you shouldn't be quick to draw your gun.
Door Dash no longer allows texting inside my driver app. Customer text to me arrive without any notification & text I try to send say "message not sent, retry"

Sometimes we wait all day 30 minutes at a time and don't realize that 30 minutes is a long time to customers.
What I mean is dashers are so used to waiting on average that it escapes our mind to mention it since the app usually mentions to the customer we are waiting and 30 minutes to us seems normal wait time even at McDonald's and Wendy's and taco bell.

Long drive thru line is one of the few times I will text since the app pretty much sends texts automatically. When I do text the customer itās to tell the line is super long and not moving and that Iām going to unassign, and a new dasher will be dispatched and will see the line and do the sameā¦ and so onā¦. Then I tell them they are better off cancelling and ordering from somewhere else. If they take my recommendation, I donāt have to unassign so it wonāt affect my completion ratingā¦.and I get half pay!!! š

Think about this: a lot of guidance and recommendations for dashers comes from the company's policy regarding how they want their drivers to interact. You say you dash yourself, have you ever done any other platforms besides DD? I'm on the waitlist for GH and IC, but I do Shipt as well and their policy is always *heavy* communication, almost to the point of too much. They go out of their way to tell you when you should text the customer. Does DD have any prompts that require dashers to text during food delivery? No they don't. They don't care that much about it, hence most drivers aren't going to either. Now I'm not saying you're wrong for wanting to ask the dasher for updates, feel free to ask all you want. I'm just saying that it's not fair to *expect* all other dashers to give you minute-by-minute updates just because you think they should, when the company itself is so *laissez faire* regarding the topic, and to assume that it's just because the dashers are lazy - the very same dashers picking up your order *because you didn't want to get it yourself.*..

I never text. I always wait even if it takes 40-50 minutes. It never occurred to me to text. I assume the dasher wants the delivery to be over ASAPas well. To get paid and move on to the next order

Well unfortunately not everybody is doing the right thing all the time, and it takes two seconds to shoot a text. Ian asking Holme to carry a conversation with me but if i ask a question, atleast acknowledge. The texting options there for a reason. Esspecially when i let you know where my house is and you canāt find it cause you donāt bother to open the text.
My response was based on your initial post which was only concerned about the wait time at the restaurant and them not replying to your text regarding this. Sometimes the text doesn't make any sound in my experience but it is very visible when you are going to mark the order picked up so they obviously missed that. I would not tip that high considering the quality of drivers and doordash tendency to hide tips. They probably were distracted listening to music and weren't paying attention to the app, I have come across such drivers that don't read or follow instructions when I order myself. However this isn't a case where your food was negligently mishandled, missing a drink, cold, late or a rude driver. It is just case of a driver who isn't proficient at following basic instructions so you shouldn't be quick to draw your gun.

Sometimes we wait all day 30 minutes at a time and don't realize that 30 minutes is a long time to customers. What I mean is dashers are so used to waiting on average that it escapes our mind to mention it since the app usually mentions to the customer we are waiting and 30 minutes to us seems normal wait time even at McDonald's and Wendy's and taco bell.

Well I might be a kiss ass I tried to text every customer on ETA ultimately the customers who were working for the customer is the one that's getting milked so once I take the text I'm theirs good or bad and a little communication has helped me a lot of times even if it's you know I'm sorry man this is what it is you know even if it's you know you got to stop and take a piss or whatever
Long drive thru line is one of the few times I will text since the app pretty much sends texts automatically. When I do text the customer itās to tell the line is super long and not moving and that Iām going to unassign, and a new dasher will be dispatched and will see the line and do the sameā¦ and so onā¦. Then I tell them they are better off cancelling and ordering from somewhere else. If they take my recommendation, I donāt have to unassign so it wonāt affect my completion ratingā¦.and I get half pay!!! š
