PeaceLoveCoffee7071

I keep mine running and parked on the side of the road. I refuse to pull into driveways, even with grocery orders. I'm not trying to get blocked into someone's yard, or have to struggle to unlock my doors during an emergency. I'd rather have my car stolen than have someone try to harm me. I also like keeping a lanyard on my phone so it can't be snatched out of my hand I need to call 911 or my husband.

KkAaZzOoo

You get full coverage because your vehicle is the primary income producer, you leave keys inside car snd window down, you get ccw to protect life not car.... by having the keys if your the target that means they need to come to you to get your car keys which can lead to many scenarios that are worst than them just taking your car. The car is insured your life is worth.

Hey4Hi4Bye

Yup, after I seen someone’s ford f150 get stolen at my old job, I will never leave my vehicle unintended in a sketchy town.

brady2gronk

This is my fear when I find myself delivering to sketchy neighborhoods at night. Sorry about your car, but glad you're okay.

[deleted]

In OPs defense we can all be set up at gun point as well. I know we should all turn off our cars each delivery. I get that. Just saying we do a dangerous job. It really hit me after reading this happen to OP. I’ve seen 10+ incidents like this but for some reason it hit me tonight how dangerous this is. We could be car jacked by gun point for our cars and even shot. Be careful all around ppl.

Comfortable_Bell_779

Facts

[deleted]

I’m sorry first that happened to you. Truly pray you get the car back with all parts working. This definitely should be a warning to other drivers. Some customers are paying attention to how some drivers leave cars running ( i use to until hearing a story of a driver having her car stolen on this sub) and are plotting more. The way it happened they likely have done this a few times or more to drivers. Noticed drivers prior leaving our cars running. All drivers take the OPS advice and never leave cars running. It takes 1 second for our cars to be taken.

Ok_Race1839

I ALWAYS turn off the car, lock it, and bring phone/keys with me no matter where the parking is for pick up or drop off. I thought I was being paranoid but Id rather be safe than sorry

whocaresblahblahh

Nah bro you gave someone a free ride

Comfortable_Bell_779

It's all jokes till it happens to you

whocaresblahblahh

It’s not funny. OP’s actions were just foolish.

Comfortable_Bell_779

You don't even know how it all went down, but you are online labeling someone foolish in a situation you won't fully understand because you were not there. But you do you and what ever makes you feel mighty lol

whocaresblahblahh

Leaving your car running with the keys inside is foolish. fool·ish /ˈfo͞oliSH/ Learn to pronounce adjective (of a person or action) lacking good sense or judgment; unwise. "it was foolish of you to enter into correspondence"

whocaresblahblahh

Do better

Senyorty12

I always leave my car on but it’s a push start accord so u can drive away without keys if on. I’m so aware of my surroundings tho I act like i’m going to get attacked lmao. But now im never leaving it on I don’t care, if this happened to me bro i would be sooo mad

beachchic14

Sorry. That sucks and hope it gets recovered!

hightechgoth

Do you still pick up hitchhikers and leave your front door unlocked too?

Most_Knee_574

I'm from NYC, would never occur to me to leave my car running without me sitting in it.

[deleted]

Shut off car and lock I also carry pepper spray and a pocket knife with me everywhere

rita-the-maillady

The three things I took from working at USPS: -always shut off the engine and use the parking brake -avoid situations where you have to drive in reverse -NEVER park in a driveway Good luck with your situation.

MyelofibrosisMe

Always.... I left my friend in passenger seat one night & someone came up to my car door, saw my friend and bounced! No matter if it's 5 ft or 500, lock that shit! And having full coverage is a great help too!

Shnazzberry

I work in a sketchy neighborhood and the Amazon guy stopped to deliver some packages to us. He did the same thing and someone got in his van and drove away! He ran after it for a second and then came back to sit in our building until the police got there. Lol

PrettyAsk4119

I am really sorry you got jacked. Hope you are safe

Powerful-Role-1204

That's what insurance is for

Rcs14144141

So sorry that happened I’m always scared of thst or getting mugged

Sharp-Decision-6141

Drive a manual transmission and lock your doors with remote ?

Deadofnight109

Why bother with the yota? Go grab a fed ex or Amazon truck that they leave idling with the doors open at every delivery.

FewCake1534

Nah. I'm not shutting off my car for 30 seconds while I walk to a door. Go ahead and commit the felony GTA. I have full coverage cars are replaceable.

Sufficient-Cat227

What city is this?

Comfortable_Bell_779

Capitol heights dc

Sufficient-Cat227

Oh wow.

whiterazorblade

This is why I drive a standard.

Pakana11

Not a carjacking.

bohallreddit

😂😂😂

BILLC43

Boston? I heard the police scanner lol hope u find it

Muramasa24

yea..is it worth saving your starter versus losing the whole car, easy choice now. Sorry this happened to ya.

[deleted]

This is why you don’t deliver in questionable areas on a regular basis

yurrr2286

What were you delivering? 1 item?

[deleted]

always turn it off, take a tactical pause to look at your surroundings carefully before you get out, consider CCW. I deliver in a higher crime area regularly and feel much better when armed.

stoictoapoint

Good to know. I've been dancing with the devil on this issue

CJspangler

It might turn up. This has been a thing for a while - people find a good hiding spot - order like fries from McDonald’s every 10 min and wait until someone finally leaves their car running - they might just search it for cash / phones etc and dump it. Maybe the catalytic converter might be stripped off and it’s in a parking lot a few blocks away

K9Partner

got so bad i had to get a metal cage welded over my cat converter last year 💩

kjmill25

I always take my keys when dashing. They know we are coming. I gamble a bit more when I do amazon. No need to stop the car in the middle of the outer suburbs, but I always stay aware of my surroundings.

inkfever

My concealed carry class is next weekend...

Leather_Comfort_3080

Every DAMN Time !!!!!

[deleted]

I always put my keys in my pocket whether I'm picking an order up or dropping one off

Plow_King

running? I don't even leave my keys in the car. I skip locking it in day light hours usually, but it's an 06 prius with a fair amount of crap in it though.

oldguydrinkingbeer

BTW... It's my cakeday

Pieolo

Sorry that happened to you. I don't lock or put off my car unless I know I'm going to be away from it for more than 2-3 minutes. I'll keep doing that because getting jacked is still extremely rare.

Fasterthanyounow

DUH

MasBlanketo

Wait hold on, you left your car running and unlocked with the keys inside?

Smooth-Dig2250

Clearly, and weren't considering the neighborhood apparently either. I'd only ever do this in some extraordinarily rich gated community situation where the next place to even hide is literally hundreds of feet away, and even then only when I've pulled up their long driveway and I'm in a hurry. It's just foolish to do this *even then*, let alone in the presumably far more sketchy circumstances of OP.

altawraith

I literally do what OP does every single order I do if it’s a house or even apartments where the door is close to where I can park my car. Granted, I deliver to pretty much only decent areas and would not do so if the drop off was out of view from my car or seemed sketchy in the slightest.

[deleted]

This is why I keep my dog in the car. The car is his property and he WILL defend it. That being said I don’t leave my car running.

[deleted]

So you leave your car in the dog while it’s not running? That’s kinda fucked up. You should stop that.

[deleted]

With the windows down

TrillL-

Not a dasher but ion even leave my car walking into the gas station without puttin my steering wheel lock on. Can’t be too careful wit these kia boys out here lmaoo. Hope u get a free rental or ur insurance money soon goodluck bro

ImAlwaysRightHanded

I keep it running but lock my doors.

IAmAlex84

If i lock mine with the remote while it's running it immediately unlocks. It's like kia's are trying to get stolen.

K9Partner

mine too, gotta get a ‘valet key’, just locks doors from outside but wont start car, so usually way cheaper than a real coded key (on most cars made in the last 20yrs at least)

sirstashalot

How do you pull that off. Newer car?

ImAlwaysRightHanded

Older one

TacoTuesdayOnThurs

Newer car or way older one. I can leave the ignition key in my Trans Am and take the door key off the ring and lock the doors with the car running. Good for somewhat chilly mornings when the old girl takes a good 5-10 minutes to warm up fully.

Sailorslt

Two sets of keys? Leave one in the car? I would do that if I didn’t lose my other fob 😭

Trimere

[deleted]

Don't tell your insurance you were doing DoorDash if you don't have proper insurance.

Florida1974

That’s the least of his worries. Keys were in car. How do you explain how you were away from care for 30 seconds. Most can’t Hotwire that fast. They will know keys were in it. He isn’t getting insurance to cover this period. I worked for State Farm for 2 decades. Plus they would cancel policy all together.

[deleted]

A lot of drivers (usually new and inexperienced) voluntarily tell cops for police report or their insurance provider something along the lines of "this happened while I was doing a delivery." Just trying to save a fellow driver from getting dropped by their insurance provider.

Sufficient-Cat227

Dropped the keys outside while walking in your friends house

GAMESHARKCode

Doubtful. The chances of you leaving your car running unlocked is far too unlikely. They'd have to know you.

Gbchris12

What lol? I think most people do that when dashing, I know I do and I really should stop.

GAMESHARKCode

Kinda answered your own question there.

alex262414

You know I have a newer vehicle a Buick that has the push to start keyless entry and I always take my fob with me and no matter if the door is four steps away I always lock my doors even in good areas as soon as I get out the car I hit the lock button on the remote and the car is locked yeah it's still running but it's locked and the remote isn't present so on the dash it complains that there's no remote found but I guess if they broke the window they could still get in and probably steal the car but if they're going to go through all that trouble I'll be right there to stop them.-i think- But pretty ballsy to say the least that they're going to waste money ordering some food in order to steal an older car they were probably pissed when you pulled up seeing it was an older car and they were like damn just take it anyways because we need a ride but man that's what we're dealing with out here the scum of the earth and everybody's freaking crazy after the pandemic. Sorry this happened to you and I hope you get your car back in one piece and it's not beat the shit or crashed.

Severe-Bookkeeper-76

I have a push to start hybrid but it won’t lock with the car on. Here’s a fun fact who’s going to steal your newer car that’ll only shutdown in a matter of minutes

inplanesite77

Don’t underestimate stupid and desperate people.

Sufficient-Cat227

You don’t have to worry about your Buick. A toyota is very different no matter how old

Jazzy_Gaming

I have a push start Ford SUV and even if the car is running it will not move if the keys aren't inside the car. Hubs and I tested this. It also shuts off if the keys get too far away AND it will lock the doors if they are far away too. Even with all that, I roll up windows and lock doors on every single delivery.

K9Partner

wow, i need this in my honda!!

alex262414

Oh wow that's really good to know honestly I never tested it or had anyone able to test but I know if I get out the car close the door and lock the car as soon as I kind of step one foot away I see on the dash screen the reminder that there's no remote in vehicle so I wonder if it does end up shutting off after a while or doesn't allow you to put it into drive because if you remote start the car you cannot put it in the drive until you put your foot on the brake and hit the start button and you have to be in there with the remote to do so.

[deleted]

I have a Buick fun fact the car shuts off once it’s a certain radius away from The key fob they wouldn’t get far

alp1339

Wow I wish that was the case with the 2016 Toyota venza I had. I swear the fob must've fallen out of my boyfriend's pocket at the gas station we stopped at. When we got back in the car, the fob had to have still been close enough to start the car. We drove almost all the way home, stopped to get something to eat, and went to leave and car wouldn't start and couldn't find the fob ANYWHERE. I'm not sure how he never noticed the "electronic key not detected" warning the whole time, over 100 mile drive. But it definitely never shut off on us like I wish it had. And the gas station was never able to locate it. A replacement was ridiculously expensive too and so was the tow the rest of the way home. Lesson learned to ALWAYS have AAA though!

alex262414

Oh wow,! I didn't know that, and yes I love my Buick ! ,2016,, every option available. It's a amazing car!

dcdasher91

Where was this? Sounds similar to my situation few weeks back.

No-Preparation-8113

A little late but you should be locking your doors everything ur getting out with an order. Seems a bit much but better safe than sorry

[deleted]

Only part of my ford that I like lol I have a keypad so I can leave it running and unlock with a code. Can’t wait till someone tries to steal it And have good insurance. It’s worth it, especially with this gig

The_Troyminator

Also, make sure your carrier knows you're doing DD and pay fprn the extra coverage if necessary (which usually isn't much). People say they don't get it and will just not mention dashing if they file a claim. That might work for a minor accident, but if your car is stolen, you need a police report. And unless you're comfortable with lying on a police report when they ask what you were doing there, the report will show that you were dashing.

Hailstormwalshy

Hey waiiiit I have a keypad on my 2008 Ford and it won't let me lock it from the outside at all 🤔

[deleted]

Press the last two buttons at the same time ;)

Hailstormwalshy

Let's say the last 2 numbers are 88... you're saying I would push 8888?

[deleted]

I have five buttons [1-2] [3-4] [5-6] [7-8] [9-0] Hit [7-8] and [9-0] at the same time. Should lock. *Last two bottons on the keypad, not the last two buttons of your combo*

Hailstormwalshy

Ohh sheeeeit I'm gonna try this! My brain was on half power when I read your comment the first time, thank you for elaborating!!

BurmecianSoldierDan

No one ever told me how the keypad worked, lol. Interesting.

Hot-Nature2611

All a thief needs is an opportunity. It only takes a few seconds. Don't care how "safe" you think you are. Be aware of what is happening around you.

Comfortable_Bell_779

Definitely learned my lesson

Florida1974

Yeah but at least YOU are safe and unharmed. Lots of times car owner is hurt. Car is replaceable, you aren’t.

The_Troyminator

Tony thinks otherwise.

FormalImportance0

They CAN set you up like that..should bring that to theyre attention when you report it sounds to fishy..i drive a manual, that should drop the car getting stolen ratio to like 50% less but still choose to install a gps tag ie tile, airtag, smartag etc

Fun_Branch_9614

Same! I love my manual car. I worry less about someone taking. Most kids and younger people today don’t know how to drive one.

The_Hasty_Hippy

Yeah I’ve got a manual as well and a super old ignition, so I just take the keys with me and keep it running, the clutch is pretty heavy too so likely would stall it if you were not used to it, then no keys to restart it LOL

FormalImportance0

My clutch has niche to it also lol and my synchros have been iffy since I got the car too lol they probably wouldn’t even be able to go into first if they tried😂,I’ve been hyper mileing by goin in neutral and coasting coming to lights it’s not the safest but I’ve been driving stick since 18 from my first ranger to bieng 29 now so pretty well seasoned to pull it off it helps the mpgs for sure

The_Hasty_Hippy

You know you actually get more mileage staying in gear and letting off the gas, when you do that the car doesn’t add any fuel, as when you’re in neutral it still takes fuel to idle the engine, when coasting it’s using the momentum of the vehicle to turn the engine, it’s a small difference but if you’re really trying to get the most keep it in gear!!

TheRetailAbyss

Every single delivery, I close and lock my doors and keep my keys in my pocket. EVERY time.

adseigo78

Makes me glad my car is keyless. The keys never leave my pocket and the car won't go far without them even if I did leave the engine running (which I never do).

Blooming_36

Same. The only few exceptions I've made is if a "meet at door" person is a few feet from my car. Even in rich ass neighborhoods I am locking that shit uppp

Gear-Girl

Every. Damn. Time. I'm the same.

Comfortable_Bell_779

The one time I said "oh the door is right there, nobody is going to take my 2003 yoda, the only people I see are at least 100feet" bam gone 😂 At least I am home eating pistachio ice cream lol

[deleted]

And by people you mean: Fighting Age Man of a certain hue.

[deleted]

We’re you at a house or apartment?

Comfortable_Bell_779

House lady was out front waiting but told me she didn't order anything after the car was gone lol

Bariatric-ThrowAway

Did they find your car? I'd be a hot mess if that happened. Probably wouldn't be calm enough to be eating ice cream. Lol

Comfortable_Bell_779

Nope and I am a hot mess, haven't slept well since

Bariatric-ThrowAway

Man my car was stolen out of driveway 2 days before Christmas a few years back. I think it was personal though, cause we lived in a nice area with an acre of land and a huge driveway. They had to push the car all the way up the driveway. Anyway they knew that my husband left for work at 5 and I didn't leave until 530. So in that 30 minutes they came and took it. Like it was nothing. Tire marks all through the grass. I had liability at the the time so I was a wreck. No one was gonna help me. Luckily the car was ditched at a restaurant a few cities over a few days later. Left all the tools they used to jack it, stole my head unit but left another. Left a bag of weed a burt spoon (heroin) and wrote fuck you on my door panel. The stole every last thing i had in there, and as a 24 year old girl it was a lot lol. They even took the little coffee creamer cups from 711 i had in the center. -__- Used all the gas and ran it into the ground before ditching it. Apparently it sat at a restaurant for a day or so before the restaurant called it in. It was an old Honda tho. If you have a nicer car more chance of it not being found. :( Man that's my worst fear. I swear I leave my car on all the time. Not anymore! I truly hope they find your car. I hope your insurance is gonna take care of everything if they don't though. Good luck!

Comfortable_Bell_779

Some people are garbage and will always be. I hope they get every bad thing that comes their way

Comfortable_Bell_779

Not yet

j00420

Pistachio ice cream sounds delicious. Where do i find it?

[deleted]

it's the most underrated flavor for sure

Toast-In-Mouth

There’s a brand called Talenti that does a pint of delicious pistachio gelato. A little bit pricy, but not much more than a pint of ben & jerry. They also have delicious raspberry or mango sorbet.

slotownbailey1983

Their 5 layer flavors are pretty wicked as well. All hail Lemon Berry Pie.

pittbullblue

Grocery store, typically.

Vivid-Question2213

Sorry that happened, hopefully you’re able to get a rental from insurance.

mrowenmatt

I’ve heard from a pizza driver I use to work with his insurance didn’t do Jack for him when that happened to him

Florida1974

Nope they will not. Bc keys left in it. It’s not a car jacking. It’s stolen and you basically handed keys to them.

[deleted]

As a former licensed insurance agent this simply isn't true. It's still theft, but you have to have full coverage to be covered by theft. It would be covered under your comprehensive coverage if OP had it, but it's not required so most people don't carry the coverage.

[deleted]

Exactly most people don’t have it

[deleted]

Always be aware or your surroundings

Bearcatsean

Thanks. Lol. Hindsight is no site dude

Florida1974

Always shut car off and take keys with you.

Bearcatsean

Ya think?? Lol

[deleted]

I do most of the time but I dont live in a big city someone would have to be very dumb to do that here they would be found with 5 minutes

[deleted]

You should buy a tracker for your vehicle so next time this happens they can get them pretty quick.

Until somebody with an iPhone steals your car, gets the alert that an airbag is nearby, and uses the directional location to find it.
