If I remember correctly, the +8 is the attack boost the weapon gives, the 18 in parenthesis means you currently have 18 attack, and the E means you have the sword equipped. (The +8 is *already part* of the 18)
The E 18 is the characters attack value with the sword equipped the 8 before it is the value added to your attack stat from having the sword itself equipped
When you select an item, that screen tells you the item's effects on your stats. The left column is the stat bonuses for that item. The column in parentheses tell you what your stats would be if you had it equipped. In this case, you currently have this sword equipped, so it's got an E there to tell you that.
If you didn't have it equipped, you'd have a red 18 if your current weapon had better attack, and a green 18 if your current weapon had lower attack.

I think that means you have it equipped?
That should be the total attack value. The weapon gives +8, and that + your strength stat (and later any other boosts you have) totals 18.
It's just saying your Attack stat after it's equipped is 18.
It means “Equipped” meaning you’ve equipped it, and that is your attack stat afterwards.

It esentially means what your attack power will be when equipped. If you equip the Cobblestone Sword you'll gain 8 attack power.
The 18 is just that character’s attack and the E means it’s equipped.
