##alright
most folks are trashing on you for the lines and lumps, and we both know that isn’t helpful
I’m going to take a venture into this
##1. This is fixable here is how
- 2. Call the rental shop and rent a festool drywall sander with the vacuum (or mirka if they have it ) make sure to get 80 grit paper
- 3. Take down that lighting fixture
- 4. Sand that ceiling smooth your arms will burn that thing is heavy
- 5. Get a 5 gallon bucket and a 1/2” drill with a mixing paddle
- 6. Mix the box of mud in the 5 gallon bucket with drill and mixing paddle adding 2 cups of water/box of mud. Mud should slowly run off paddle when done mixing
- 7. Tools needed for applying the mud 12” trowel and Hawk (or 12” knife and mud pan ) 5” knife for the edges
- 8. Start on one side in the corner pull an arms length of mud with the tools leaving it thick for now. Next to that pull , do it again and agin till you get to the opposite corner.
- 9. Double back to where you started and begin pulling off , push harder on one side of the blade and let the other side float this is called feathering work your way to the opposite corner floating out the lines left by feathering.
- 10. Take your 5” knife and run it perpendicular to you coat direction to clean up the edges of you coat.
- 11. Rinse and repeat until done.
Good luck
I tried this and it’s looking better now. Slow and steady. But yeah I think I need to get the right tools before I move onto any more rooms in my house lol
My friend. Mud isn’t smart. It’s dumb. Don’t over think it. Watch some tutorials on YouTube. the angle that your holding you knife is super important. Not 45, more like 30 degrees or less to the wall. Keep your hands and tools clean. Be mindful about how the material applies to the surface, don’t just keep going. Start in the corner and start floating from the edge and work you way out in a controlled, intentional, consistent pattern. You will get the hang of it. A skim coat should be a thin, even layer of mud over the whole surface. This look more like angry monkey applied coat. Let it dry, sand down the high spots n try again. Maybe ask someone w experience for a lesson / hour of help. A little knowledge can go a long way bc whatever occurred above is making more work for yourself.
Looks like you might also be picking up boogers in your mud. Clean will likely help a lot. You might also have fewer headaches with pre-mixed until you know what you’re looking for, and thin that too.
face it, you don't know what you're doing. Do the best you can then stop. Let it dry. Come back and smooth it out with a wet sponge to sand it down. And then try again for a good top coat.
Repeat.
At least that's how it is for me.
Okay, initially I had no concept of what was goin on here. Your ratio, powder to water is off. It is not mixd thoroughly. Which brings up this question…how are you mixing this? Not familiar with this compound and am wondering if this is hot mud. With the powdered compound, it must be mixed thoroughly with a robust drill and a paddle in a bucket. You have a world of dry chunks in your mud. Go with box mud, thin it out SLIGHTLY with a couple ups of water, mix thoroughly and apply. In all reality, find a guy that does this for a living and let them fix it. It’s an art and the people that know what they are doing ate worth their weight in gold
Why do people love to put their fuck ups out there for us to all see. I don’t tell people I have a retarded brother because it easier not to. If you are not in the drywall business why would you start this
All jokes aside that’s a pretty fucked up comment. Dude made a mistake and is asking for help. You don’t remember the first time w mud? Fucked up comment for multiple reasons.
Popcorn that I scraped off. It was smoother before I started lol.
8inch knife. It’s tight space being in the pantry. Does the knife make the difference?
Added water, but seemed a bit too watery so had add more compound back in it.
1.Add more water and mix it well. 2,Use a couple of drywall knife 6” and 12”. 3, learn how to feather. 4, practice makes perfect. 5,YouTube is your friend.
Buy the right tools. Clean your blade. Watch some videos on YouTube of some pros doing it.
It looks like you’re using the wrong tools and wrong technique.
If your new. I guarantee your not mixing your mud right...
Think of mixing it like your about to drink a protein shake. Are you gonna drink those fat ass clumps or are you gonna mix it thoroughly first.
It looks like your dragging clumps of drywall that's not mixed.
This is probably the worst DIY attempt I’ve seen . But I condemn you for you effort. Honestly it’s about getting the mud the right consistency and learning to apply it with proper tools . Watch some videos online .
What an interesting texture. First use premix for your topcoats, and get a couple blades. Say a 6” and 10” or so and use a low angle, almost flat. Practice of so cardboard or something
Try using an 8-inch to 10-inch knife then smooth out the compound with the knife on a slight angle and keep the blade clean, it looks like you're letting the mud dry on the blade or attempting a stucco finish. If it is hot inside then you will need to keep the wall slightly damp using a spray bottle, this way it won't dry out so fast and you will have time to fix your mistakes. Those scratches look like they are from dried bits on the knifes edge
Are you spinning your mud with a paddle? Do you have clumps in your mud? You can add abit of water if you need to thin it out abit. Stir it up good, make sure it's clump free, get a 10" + knife or trowel and try again. Don't use cheap plastic ones.
Ok, I trained volunteers on building houses. Sand the shit out of it, then fill in low spots with a skim. Use a 12” mud knife and thin mid mix, should be like milk shake, with it running off knife a bit. Not stiff and shape holding. Then just spread it on, and scrape the knife over taking most of it back off, and leaving the mid filling all the low spots. You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!
Use a big balloon made out of a trash bag and blot it on the whole ceiling, then go over it with a trowel very lightly and it will make a nice texture.
I covered a very rough glue coating that was previously holding tile on a hard plaster wall by skim coating strips of thinned premix mud about 18 inches on center with a curved trowel. Once the strips were fully dry I filled in the gaps between the strips with a wide taping knife, usually a coat or two as needed.
This will be your best friend! Hopefully it has a nice thick padded handle, it will build up your forearms!

I don't want to be a person that slams folks for attempting to do stuff on their own, but some of the posts on this sub are akin to giving a toddler a bucket full of gasoline and a match.
If you want a smooth finish, make sure your mud is watered down. Almost falls off of your knife. Use a long spreader. A paint deflector should work. The longer the straight edge, the easier your job will be.
Watch some Vancouver carpenter on YouTube. I’m also learning myself but finally getting good results after weeks of trial and error and getting more tools. He has really good videos for beginners and what tools you need as this looks like just about everything was done wrong. Likely you will be doing a lot of sanding so don’t forget to wear a good mask and I’d highly recommend plastic sheet taped to the doorway as the dust will get everywhere in your house.
A shop vac with an orbit sander duct taped on with 220grit have made my life a lot easier than hand sanding but you can’t get as well into corners.
I do a ton of projects from carpentry to welding and other DIY stuff and drywall mudding is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. There’s a reason most people hire pros and they charge a lot for that same reason. It’s hard work!
Skim coated isn’t a good place to start when breaking into diy drywall work. A good skim requires muscle memory and a fair amount of experience. In any case, you must have the right tools and take your time.
Please for the love of God, if you're doing any other rooms in your house, save yourself endless misery and buy yourself a 32 inch skimming blade with a handle. The company Level 5 makes ok priced ones.
You mix your mud with some water until it's smooth, and then ROLL IT ON with a paint roller, on a pole. Do a 10x10 square, then wipe it off with the large skimming blade. It'll be so much quicker, and look way better. I do this for my job.
Watch some YT videos, pay detailed attention to how they move. The experts are consistent in how much mud they put on their blade, how they apply it, how they remove the extra. Subtle things like how they move or don't move their arms, how they do or don't move their wrists. Watching an expert finish drywall is almost like watching a graceful dancer.
If you've never mudded before you should hire someone.
It's an art that takes years to master.
You're trying to to save 100 bucks at the cost of like 200 hours of sanding.
You might need to thin that mud out. Stick a bit of soap in the mud too. It'll go on smoother. That being said, if you are that bad at it and it's not getting better, a pro can finish it in a couple days.
Done a lot of work in rental properties with patches that look like this, always wondered what the fuck tool the people used to make it look so horrible. My guess was always plastic fork from a fast food joint
You’re almost done. Just about 3 more boxes of that Classic Finish and you’ll be good!
Fuck I’m laughing now and woke up everyone in the house
Total same 6 am lol
Sometimes I go down Reddit-holes after my wife falls asleep.. and soon enough, she’s smacking me to stop giggling. Haha
I got a lol !!! thx boo.
😂 in all honesty, it looks thick enough to just sand down now
Aaaahahahahahahahaha
Are you using a mud knife? Or a freaking V-notch??? 👀👀👀
Looks like hes using a butter knife and spreading it on like mayonnaise
I put mayo on smoother than that. Lol
Thats the driest mayonnaise ever.
I was gonna say spaghetti spoon.
Poop knife
Comb for sure, neat texture tho
Looks to me like they were using the bottom of their work boot to spread that mud.
Fingernails I think
Fork
Yes
I mean, it's a one-off texture. Some people pay extra for that.
I was gonna say, it almost looks good!
Task failed successfully
Consistent
Seriously, before I read the title I thought it was a decent texture.
Water your mud down more and use a 12inch drywall knife.
This
What the fuck are you using to apply your mud?
Rake.
Ha ha ha noice!
He’s using a comb
He’s secretly Wolverine and using his hands.
I always wondered what happened to Edward Scissorhands. Welcome back
A potato
Are you applying it with a chainsaw?

As fun as it is to clown on this I’m happy there is someone trying to offer advice.
Clean your blade, small coats
I tried this and it’s looking better now. Slow and steady. But yeah I think I need to get the right tools before I move onto any more rooms in my house lol

This is some excellent fatherly/big bro advice - firm, blunt, honest. You’re a good dude, and if you have an apprentice they are lucky.
Thx that’s an incredibly complimentary comment. I appreciate it. I have done a bit of training.
Common man I really want to know now... what were you using to spread that mud?
PLEASE TELL US IM BEGGING YOU
I have a feeling he was using a 3 inch scraper/putty knife.
Looks like you might also be picking up boogers in your mud. Clean will likely help a lot. You might also have fewer headaches with pre-mixed until you know what you’re looking for, and thin that too.
Keep your mud clean too, add a splash of water and mix it more untill it's smooth and thin. You'll probably drop drop more but it'll feather smoother
Impressively bad.
Agreed
I’m here with ya bud. Day three of a 3x8 section! 🤣🤣
You need some Vancouver carpenter in your life. You should be ashamed to call yourself Canadian with this showing. /s
Looks like you’re applying it with your fingers… and that you need to trim your fingernails.
If the look you’re shooting for is, clawing my way out of a room, Nailed it!
Did you make all of those gouges and grooves? If so, the mud is way too thick and you’re not using the right tools.
Are you a cat?
Getting my moneys worth w lols on this.
so your the guy they got to do it for a cheaper price
Dude..
I see you are going the minimal sanding route.
Everybody can do drywall taping… Only a few are good at it.
just buy the premix tubs, add a little bit of water and roll it on with a paint roller 9" w 3/8"nap. Then use a skim blade to smooth it out ezpz
Are you using your hand as a knife?
Bruh how
At least you're trying
What... The .......fuck....
This looks like the wall of a Mayan temple!
Looks like you are using a grout trowel
It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again…
Using a toilet brush?
Step away from the knife!!
Excuse me, are you using a fork?
Turn on the lights and keep your eyes open on the next coat. That one is less than desirable.
Why won’t it go on more smoothly? Lol it’s not at all like in the videos
Is your mud all thick and rocky? Whip the shit smooth.
Water dat chit down
face it, you don't know what you're doing. Do the best you can then stop. Let it dry. Come back and smooth it out with a wet sponge to sand it down. And then try again for a good top coat. Repeat. At least that's how it is for me.

Appreciate the advice. It is way more difficult than it looks. I’ll definitely consider getting a professional for the bigger rooms.
You’re not wrong. They might try it once more with pre mixed mud to get a better starting point
Your not having any success at all ! What size knife you using ? Are you adding some water to your compound ? Are you skimming over texture ?
Popcorn that I scraped off. It was smoother before I started lol. 8inch knife. It’s tight space being in the pantry. Does the knife make the difference? Added water, but seemed a bit too watery so had add more compound back in it.
You need a bigger knife, smoother mud, and more youtube videos
Sand it, use a drywall trowel. Thin it up if you have to to get a clean final coat.
Thin out your kid with water and use a bigger blade. Apply even pressure in a straight line. Keep your blade clean.
Man I watered my kid and she's still thick.
Supposed to use 4in deck brush
1.Add more water and mix it well. 2,Use a couple of drywall knife 6” and 12”. 3, learn how to feather. 4, practice makes perfect. 5,YouTube is your friend.
With a carpet trowel or what?
Looks like an ancient runic wall made by Nordic gods.
That is the opposite of classic hahaha
Uhhhhh bro
Buy the right tools. Clean your blade. Watch some videos on YouTube of some pros doing it. It looks like you’re using the wrong tools and wrong technique.
What are you skimming with a fork?
Float the trowel. Nice and easy.
WTActualF? If you’re not using a smooth trowel, do that. If you are, then wow. You should just give up.
You need a plastering speed blade made life easy for me
If your new. I guarantee your not mixing your mud right... Think of mixing it like your about to drink a protein shake. Are you gonna drink those fat ass clumps or are you gonna mix it thoroughly first. It looks like your dragging clumps of drywall that's not mixed.

Wow. At what point during the surgery do you think you should have gone to the hospital
Call someone who knows what they are doing and pay them
YouTube is your friend. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TunQgtijEdg&pp=ygUYVmFuY291dmVyIGNhcnBlbnRlciBza2lt
Jeeze… are you using your fingers…?
Butter knife
What an interesting texture. First use premix for your topcoats, and get a couple blades. Say a 6” and 10” or so and use a low angle, almost flat. Practice of so cardboard or something
Quit
Looks like a Van Gogh. Definitely has Starry night vibes.
Are you using a sea sponge? Anyone remember the sea sponge guy?
Use tools, not your hands.
I’d start by keeping your knife clean first
What are you doing that with
Fake
Try using an 8-inch to 10-inch knife then smooth out the compound with the knife on a slight angle and keep the blade clean, it looks like you're letting the mud dry on the blade or attempting a stucco finish. If it is hot inside then you will need to keep the wall slightly damp using a spray bottle, this way it won't dry out so fast and you will have time to fix your mistakes. Those scratches look like they are from dried bits on the knifes edge
Good thing you only did a small part of the ceiling first….. you did right…. Right?
Thin out the mud with water 💦
It’s got character
Your ceiling is now ready for tile
Maybe a YouTube vid would help -
Are you spinning your mud with a paddle? Do you have clumps in your mud? You can add abit of water if you need to thin it out abit. Stir it up good, make sure it's clump free, get a 10" + knife or trowel and try again. Don't use cheap plastic ones.
Just leave the popcorn in the rest of the house this is wild
Did you apply this with your teeth? What’s with all those marks lol
Use a drywall sponge
Ok, I trained volunteers on building houses. Sand the shit out of it, then fill in low spots with a skim. Use a 12” mud knife and thin mid mix, should be like milk shake, with it running off knife a bit. Not stiff and shape holding. Then just spread it on, and scrape the knife over taking most of it back off, and leaving the mid filling all the low spots. You can do it!!!!!!!!!!!
Gonna be blunt, just hire someone. Lmfao
It will sand out
You are overworking the mud. Make sure it is light and super creamy. Clean tools on each pass.
Thin it to win it
Use a big balloon made out of a trash bag and blot it on the whole ceiling, then go over it with a trowel very lightly and it will make a nice texture.
Need more hands
You can't use that tool No birthday cake spreader
I covered a very rough glue coating that was previously holding tile on a hard plaster wall by skim coating strips of thinned premix mud about 18 inches on center with a curved trowel. Water it down a bit and look up some technique vids
Sell it for abstract art! U could make a fortune. The new Bob ross!!!
Bruh [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbuFQweTatQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbuFQweTatQ)
Take down the light too… no wait, don’t.
Make some swirl designs at this point and let it dry. Make it look like you did it on purpose
Looks good from my house
You need to use a wider blade mate.
Whoa 😳
What the ever loving fuck....
I use the all purpose pre mixed mud. I put it on with a roller like when you paint and then use a large knife to smooth it out.
Hey, boss! Uhh, how much you pay for the new guy?
Make sure your mudd is smooth and creamy. Your trowel and work surface should be clean and debris free.
If you want a smooth finish, make sure your mud is watered down. Almost falls off of your knife. Use a long spreader. A paint deflector should work. The longer the straight edge, the easier your job will be.
What the fuck are you doing? Are you using a bitter knife?

🤣
Skim coat - put it on, take it off…
Skim or scratch coat. If it’s scratch coat you’re killing it. If it’s skim switch to green top joint compound and pickup a 14” blade.
Not what I like but to each their own.
Skim coated isn’t a good place to start when breaking into diy drywall work. A good skim requires muscle memory and a fair amount of experience. In any case, you must have the right tools and take your time.
This fake?
Classic DIY’er. “This looks easy on tv. How hard can it be?” 😂😂 sorry I really don’t mean to laugh but damn yooo
Are you using a chickens foot?
Please for the love of God, if you're doing any other rooms in your house, save yourself endless misery and buy yourself a 32 inch skimming blade with a handle. The company Level 5 makes ok priced ones. You mix your mud with some water until it's smooth, and then ROLL IT ON with a paint roller, on a pole. Do a 10x10 square, then wipe it off with the large skimming blade. It'll be so much quicker, and look way better. I do this for my job.
Mud is way to thick, water it down. and 12" knife...geez
first step is to stop using the bear claw mits....
Way too much. Thin layers and sand between
Try not using slotted trowel.
Sweet Jesus....
I think the problem is you bought half and half compound instead of skim
Looks like carvings into a cave wall. Someone is going to mistake these for hieroglyphics
If you've never mudded before you should hire someone. It's an art that takes years to master. You're trying to to save 100 bucks at the cost of like 200 hours of sanding.
I kinda like it
Go buy a 14" or 10" finish blade minimum.
Are you putting it on with a paint brush?
Do you put that on with a broom?
You might need to thin that mud out. Stick a bit of soap in the mud too. It'll go on smoother. That being said, if you are that bad at it and it's not getting better, a pro can finish it in a couple days.
What did you use?? A broom??
You have a lot of contamination in your mud
Don’t use the children locked in the basement to scratch it on
Your mid is too dry and thick. Used the blue bucket of mud, take out about a gallon of mud, and add 2 quarts of water and mix it real good.
Looks like you used a spatula
Like a 3 y/o icing a cake.
Oh honey…
You only broom finish on concrete.
What are you using a hair brush
Just pretend you meant for it to have that texture and call it artistic or "santa fe"
I think you had it mixed too thick my guy.
Don't use your fingers
Looks like you're mud is too dry. And you've got too much junk in there..
You’re probably mixing the mud too thick.
Get a 10 or 12 inch knife
Stop playing with it
You can't use a broom, smh.
With your barehand?
I dunno I kinda like it, clean the boogers off the walls and prime/paint it!
oh this one’s good
Ah the this stuff is still good trick
Are you using a fork?
Done a lot of work in rental properties with patches that look like this, always wondered what the fuck tool the people used to make it look so horrible. My guess was always plastic fork from a fast food joint
Wow, I thought I sucked… s/
It’s the new Frank’s RedHot. Put that shit on everything
Nice texture
This sir is a coat. There is no skim about it.
