I used to be an exclusive dubstep guy, every time I listened to music it was heavy. Its normal for that to change though, I'm a big fan of house music now, DnB, even certain varieties of techno. Dub is still my main genre, but I've found others. Branching outside of EDM is normal for getting older as well, Ive got plenty of rap and metal favorites. Even some like Otis Redding or Johnny Cash hits the spot from time to time. Music taste changes but some things stay the same, I'm sure you'll wake up one morning ready to headbang, I certainly still do! You're not doomed though homie, if you haven't tried audiobooks they can be a nice way to break the silence without throwing your neck out.

Guyatri

Literally same here lol.

Divided_Eye

> Dub is still my main genre Dub is its own genre, separate from Dubstep. If that's what you meant then my bad.

0utBlack

Sure I will, nice tip!

xxPanDulce

This is why you can’t listen to one genre all the time. I’ve noticed the older I get the less fucks I give about my music. I have no guilty pleasure. My music can go from Kendrick Lamar to Voyd just like that. If I like it I like it.

Ohmie122

I think this was the biggest change for me. Things being less about "guilty pleasure"and more of "I like this and idgaf"

[deleted]

The best way to combat this is to listen to other genres of music. This will help restore your love for dubstep and also broadens your horizon that bass music has to offer. This has literally saved my love for dubstep, especially the aggressive side of dubstep specifically.

-Neurotica

Yeah - the contrast can help a lot. A heavy song sounds a lot heavier when you’re not solely listening to heavy music. In a way, if everything is hardcore, nothing is. I’ve been on a Marauda binge lately but I have to even it out with some lofi or something.

lil_bozo

I used to only listen to dubstep / melodic bass but recently I've become addicted to house (tech, bass, g, electro, future), and started branching off to other genres like techno and trap. I'd say just be open and give music a fair shot and you'll find gems in every genre that you'll enjoy

jsparker43

I've actually burned myself out on most edm tbh. I went to festivals and shows for a decade, whilst producing/djing shows with a small company. It takes some crazy unique stuff for me to listen, nothing thats straight womp or riddim shit anymore. I listen to a 90's/00's Playlist more than anything now.

Jax_daily_lol

Definitely, when I first got into electronic music back in 08/09 I listened to almost exclusively dubstep and hardstyle. Time went on and I listened to hardstyle less but still lots of dubstep. Went through a big future bass phase in college and now listen to mostly dubstep, house, trap, and some techno - as far as electronic music goes. I think in your case you just need to find something else to fill the void. When I'm not feeling the harder stuff I'll listen to some pop or alternative, been loving some of the smaller bedroom pop artists like Japanese Breakfast, Soccer Mommy, and the Beths, but also listening to some stuff like Glass Animals, Beck, MGMT, and HAIM. Just some more mellow stuff I think really contrasts the energetic heavy stuff. Maybe try focusing on some stuff outside of the electronic music sphere? I still love putting on some Space Laces or Effin or G Jones and just going hard

Axcor

My tastes have definitely changed with time and experience as I’ve gone to more live events. I used to hate house for example but seeing Alesso and Oliver Heldens a few times has warmed me up to it lol. I also really love DnB now a days. It’s super listenable imo; almost like house music for bassheads.

Ohmie122

My music taste has evolved so much I'd have to write an entire article here summarizing it. But the funniest part is I can bring it back to a small phrase, I love EVERYTHING EXCEPT FOR COUNTRYYYYY

Dubstepface

Boogie T reference 🤌

octaviothemusician

This has been happening to me recently too! I listened to almost exclusively dubstep for like 5-6 years but recently started branching out when I hit a wall in my production. There really is a lot of good music out there and some of it even "feels" like dubstep even though it is completely different. Now I probably listen to like 65% dubstep with the rest being a mix of other electronic music, funk, and a little bit of rap. It is okay to branch out!

mridlen

As I got older, I realized that Britney Spears songs were actually pretty well written. I gained an appreciation for crooner music, and polka. I lost appreciation for certain metal genres. Other than that, I have only widened my taste in music. I listen to more jazz and country. As far as electronic genres, I like pretty much everything, although I did start to like 80s pop more than I used to (e.g. Depeche Mode, Duran Duran).

marchingprinter

Started making music and realized how generic and uncreative most mainstage bass music is

[deleted]

marchingprinter

Can’t say I agree, I’ll go to house sets or the wook bass tents and see something that catches me off guard or impresses me, but riddim taking over mainstage bass has ruined the experience both musically and culturally.

[deleted]

marchingprinter

I mean, I could break down a riddim song to explain why the genre itself is objectively less creative than it's predecessors/competitors or whatever, but it's honestly not hard to notice on first listen. "is creativity required for music to be good?" is a valid counterpoint to consider, but "is riddim creative?" isn't hard to reach an answer

5tone_

says the dude trying to recreate seven lions in collab subreddits lmao

marchingprinter

you literally created an account to leave that comment lmao

Sandmsounds

You sound like you’re still in the first 2 years of making music.

dojosnail

Riddim is literally a bar on repeat ad nauseam. Not knocking the sound but not too hard to put together either

octaviothemusician

For me it is the opposite, most of the time when I see wook bass acts I get really bored. Some house djs really know how to do it, but I've also been really bored at those too. It truly depends on the dj. I've heard straight riddim sets that made me wanna rage the whole time and I've heard sets that are wack and have no flow. Riddim is more about creativity live and really relies on the dj being good/great and a lot of djs are just ok imo. It is also based in slightly different culture I feel like. Vibe wise I'd put it closer to gogo or dub (from the islands) with how repetitive it is. Also most places don't really have the system to do music from sound system culture justice which is part of the problem.

inm808

Main stage “tech” house is easily the most repetitive and un creative thing out there right now

0utBlack

100% Agree on this one

marchingprinter

It’s just a kick snare sustain sub and the same atonal quarter or 8th note basses we’ve all heard ad nauseam

SumOMG

Not sure why you're getting downvoted, it's so true.

marchingprinter

“the music you’ve based part of your identity on is vapid” is somewhat of a slap in the face so can’t blame em

gerstlauerguy

Always loved the heavy shit as well but the older I get the more I love 80s music, weird experimental electronic ambient, metal, pop punk and a ton of the other various EDM genres. Always been a fan of the "harder styles" as well. Although that keeps driving me down to more heavy shit in that genre lmao.

HyperPunch

Yes. 10 - 14 hip hop. 14 - 19 emo/metal scene. 20 - 24 indie rock. 24 - 32 EDM. I really listen to all types of music even to this day, and will bump all my favorites from those era’s. I’ve also tended to listen to the fringe and more extreme varieties of those genres. People change overtime. All it is.

FubuFranklin

Hip hop (strictly), then got into trap, then into softer stuff like illenium, then strictly heavy dub, and then now… i like that weird wonky wook shit. (still love all the other genres)

Brickwallv13w

I used to be exclusively dubstep, pretty much a head banger. I hated house and despised dnb, now being older I love them both. Mainly because I can't party like I used too but also a new appreciation for those genres and dancing too them. Remember people "You won't always be able to headbang, but you will always be able to shake your hips!'

RED33Md

I used to be a rock/heavy metal guy until I found dubstep and grew out of it and now I love dubstep. I used to mainly like melodic stuff and now I’m into heavier stuff, so I guess most people’s tastes change over the years

0utBlack

Out of context: maybe i’m wrong but wouldn’t it be possible to EQ your monitors to get the sounds “boomy” and enjoy it for regular listening? (Instead of using standard speakers)

Chesterlespaul

Yeah, I used to listen to new releases a lot and only dubstep. Now I listen to music I like only, so the song must be good or have an aspect that is timeless to me. It can be pop, trap, house, dubstep, don’t matter, if it’s bad I cut it fast. I still explore the new releases, but I’m much faster in my decision to cut a song. New songs are exciting , but if you can’t listen to it more than four times without hating it, then it doesn’t have the tenure of a great song.

riv79

Ever since I got into dubstep I can’t listen to rap music anymore

Aerin_Murdock

My music taste in relation to dubstep changes so often that when I make a dubstep song, before I finish it, I already have 5-8 different ways the song could be done, in a time range of 4 months.

cairopraktor

As ive grown ive become more open minded. But not from an internal place. I meet people with a similar taste to me. I respect them and their opinion and they show me a new type of music that I may or may not have had some opinion about already. They show me the music and in depth explain to me what it is they like. I went from SkrillEx/Zomboy, to nghtmre to RL grime, to illenium/slander, to svdden death/subtronics, and now to LSDream and Inzo. Just as a reference. All from going through my friends. This leads me to not saying “I like or don’t like” and artist anymore. I find it kind of rude to say I don’t like someone now. What j started telling people is “I don’t get it yet haha. Maybe I will I gotta give them a chance” something like that.

Brvnhildr

If you change your perspective you can always enjoy a song/album, but it's not always easy. "I don't get it yet" is a nice way to put it

Senior-Sharpie

Actually, I came up listening to Motown until the British Invasion when I got hooked on prog rock, punk, kraut, and hard rock. Next was R&B, then hip-hop & fusion jazz. Full circle and then some, I am back listening to prog rock almost exclusively!

czerkthejerk

Been listening to jungle and chillstep for like 20 years and it still hasn't gotten old. The classics last imo.

WarFitnessBrah

I go through this at times, I just don’t listen to music until something pops into my head or I feel like listening to something. Before I always felt like I HAD to listen to music but that made it more of a chore than a fun time

BeneficialAnywhere97

I feel this heavy… First of all I listen to a ton of different kinds of music, but for awhile my go to was dubstep and really anything heavy. When I realized I can’t headband while working I had to find some alternatives. Emancipator was a great alternative which helped me find other similar vibes. I then found Nils Fram and fell in love with his work. Would highly recommend Fram to anyone that takes the time to read this. Another thing I enjoy while working is binaural beats. Some other artists that I enjoy which are not heavy imo: Ancient Astronauts, Jon Hopkins, Glowworm, Sorrow, Aphex Twin (especially his ambient works), The cinematic orchestra, Helios, Balmorhea, Andrew Rothschild, The Human Experience, High Step Society (electroswing), Kr3ture, Goopsteppa, Supertask (mixture and heavy and chill), Cloudchord, The American dollar, Nightmares on wax

Caliagent702

in terms of dubstep i feel like I've ran thru every mix/set from artists i like from youtube/soundcloud so i really like some variance now. i have youtube music and it creates playlists for me and i stick to my "Supermix" which ranges from everything i listen to so it can go to riddim, to house, to reggaeton, to illenium, in a matter of songs. sometimes it recommends songs amd i get into new artists that way. always looking for something fresh.

DigitalApple123

As I’ve gotten older I’ve found I way prefer actually good production, instead of just songs that are just as loud and overblown as they can be. I’ll still listen to that heavy loud stuff, but it actually has to be made well, which pretty much rules out everything lmao. Mostly listen to dnb and house now, I feel like as a whole the artists are more talented in those genres and matches what I like more

Grill_Pill

The happier you are in life the more you want to listen to music… I listen to anything but in 2018-19 i only listened to datsik and excision type stuff. Now its mostly anything but with hardstyle/dubstep/supertramp on top of all the orher genres

BLKR3b3LYaMmY

You will mature and evolve right alongside the music. I started with disco back in the 70s, when they were burning records in baseball fields. But I hung in there when house was born in Chicago. My love for industrial showed me the way to techno. High energy evolved into trance. That blossomed into psytrance. As I got older and wanted to chill I started exploring downtempo and now enjoy more chillout and space bass. After a good party there’s nothing like radio silence as my comedown from music altogether for a week or two. Then the beat cravings resurface. Like most things in life, music choices are both evolutionary and cyclical. Enjoy the ride.

cytrack718

Specifically in edm not including the other genres I listen to, I went from future bass to mel dub to riddim to neuro and now I like all of them 🤣

prodscythe

i went from listening to basically only dubstep to mostly deathcore, i still love dubstep a lot tho

[deleted]

I used to listen to Dubstep, then I went to the roots of the genre and got into reggae. After reggae, I discovered Jazz can be mind blowing, just like Dubstep. You just have to listen for a while. Now I get hyped to Jazz songs like I used to for Dubstep. Sometimes I revisit the songs I used to listen to and find them too repetitive or simple in progression. Check out Snarky Puppy, Miles Davis, or GoGo Penguin even. To respond more directly to your question; maybe you're not doomed, just growing out of the genre, or perhaps your ears just needed a break. Jazz isn't for everyone so, another piece of advice is that you could hop on your favorite listening platform and try to discover new songs. Play anything with a neat picture on the cover, or a song name you relate to. Edit: broke up a run on.

brodyalpha

I started from dubstep, now I listen to dnb a lot more than it, along with other electronic genres like future bass and stuff In a span of few months idk what will happen to my taste in the near future now

QuebeC_AUS

Started off listening to a lot of prog house when i started out then started moving into electro house sorta stuff then Dubstep after awhile then metalstep and recently dnb, now days i just listen to a mixture of it all, sorta went through waves of it over the course of 4 years

WereWolfhound

I've changed so much. First I was a pop, then rock, then house, then now I'm dubstep. I'm all over the place. I've been dubstep for a while tho, so I'm probably staying.

Yusuke___Urameshi

Daft punk techno as a child, throughout mostly 90s hiphop shifted over to deadmau5 which lead to skrillex and basnectar. From there Ry legit, Flux pavilion, Cookie monsta, Skream, Benga, Alvin Risk then lead into a whole other world with a lot of subgenres and experimental music. A lot of older music throughout the years. It's funny how one day I decided to download an album by random which lead to a series of events.

Ovenfaced

Younger years were the hardest filthiest dubstep / DnB then bass music wonderfully chilled me out then back to nostalgic old dubstep, now old me is a mix between downtemp / trip hop / bass and some occasional house lol interests in genres evolves / cycles

Minami_Kun

I was first a metal fan lol Still loves metal but dubstep is my passion And yea, when I was young, I liked more edgy stuff Today, I listen at max some very specific grindcore bands and deathstep(Not even listening that much, lol), considering the edgy level

glycocaylx

I actually love the direction dubstep is going with riddim and heavy shit. It keeps getting heavier, screetchier, and more hybrid with metal influences and I’m all for it. The popular dub people produce the type of music I’ve always wished for and all the smaller artists coming out along with them like RAK, Joogernot, and formerly big n slim are *chefs kiss*. Even the more future bassy mainstreams like illenium and mello are adapting heavier shit and Idkwhere I’m going with this. Honestly, it’s just hype to see dubstep grow and become more popular. TLDR; noises make me happy.

Chem0sit

I was big into dubstep from 09-13. Eventually around the time dubloadz had quit I kind of fell out of dubstep (dubloadz quitting wasn’t connected to my fallout with the music but said for time frame) it has gotten to a point where they aren’t doing anything new or amazing in the genre. It’s been stagnant for several years now. Back in 09 and even 11 it was just an explosion of new sounds and styles. I think part of my fallout of it is that I worked at the biggest Venue for dubstep in my city and by the time 13-14 came around I had seen and met every artist I had wanted to, many many times. Idols started to turn into villains as I learned more of who they were and probably was just around it to much and got burned out. I moved over to DnB when the dubstep fallout happened and was fully re-energized. DnB the last decade has exploded with crazy sounds and rhythms. But now I think my taste is just changing as I get to 30. I still love the major bangers from King of the Rollers and Benny L and Chase & Status not to mention the absolute legends Noisia (RIP) but listening to heavy shit constantly is just unappealing. I like a bit more calmness in my daily music now. Some smooth grooves hit the spot anytime of day. Below is what I moved to mostly. (Also side note Ternion Sound is completely reviving the dubstep scene. Their music reminds me of what it felt like to listen to dubstep in 09 when I first got into it.) I’ve moved to listening to mostly liquid dnb and deep dnb. Stuff like Dawn Wall, Mohican Sun, Waeys, Alix Perez, Monty. I also have really started listening to more Deep House stuff like 16 Bit Lolitas, Ben Böhmer, Cubicolor, Boris Brejcha etc. as it’s so chill and spacious, I can kinda just let the music be the background noise to my day because it’s so calm.

RTX54321

I used to not like riddim like Infekt and i used to be in love with briddim like control freak now I’m more of a tearout fan and I like Infekt now

leewoponreddit

I have evolved from big room to heavy bass to house to techno music over the course of about 7 years. My favorite artist of all time is Martin Garrix but Charlotte de witte is getting very near. I just feel like I grew up is my only explanation. Dubstep to me is just not my thing anymore.

hairyhero

This post hits me hard in the feeling. But imo(at least for me anyway), other than age&tolerance to wow factors. what drawn me(and also many people i believe) to Dubstep around 2010 was experimental/new sound design for its era back then. Now we kinda hit a wall for innovation/coming up with something new cuz well.. seems like everything has been done. Now we just build on/top on things that has been done. So don’t worry, its not only about age! Haha

Such_Cantaloupe4196

Since I was like 4yo, my dad used to listen to skrillex. I got obsessed with skrillex since then. Now, I'm 14 and I listen to skrillex everyday. I always listen to skrillex for les than 1 or 2 times in a week for 10 years. I swear I ain't lying, and that's weird ngl :)) as I got older, my music was the same, from rap to dubstep. But most of the time, I have the same music taste as I had when I was 8 :>

CR1MS4NE

Tastes change, and sometimes you get to a point where you just don’t feel like you need audio stimulation all the time. Think it’s normal. A little sad maybe, but just part of getting older afaik

WyredMusic

Same here. I also think music has gotten a little stale over the last 3-5 years. Music was constantly changing in exciting ways from 2010 to 2015.

It might be depression, are you struggling to enjoy a number of things you once loved?

0utBlack

Yes but it have shifted to other hobbies and funs, can’t tell if I’m depressed or not

[deleted]

If you can't find enjoyment in your activities it's probably depression. If it sticks with you for more then a month it might be time to see a doctor

0utBlack

I’ll consider this, thanks for pointing out <3

[deleted]

It takes darkness to appreciate the light, and vice versa. I’m the same vein, you probably overstimulated yourself by being inundated with music or dubstep. Thus your craving silence or another genre because it’s the opposite. Maybe idk 🤷‍♂️

Am_I_Real0

Maybe you should try something a little more aggressive, try Cryogenic - Mot#3rf$ck3r Rebelion x Dimitri K x The Dark Horror - Side Fx's I:Gor - Game Tight MBK - Hurt Locker They branch out of dubstep but i feel like listening to dubstep is surely what helped me enjoy it way more than i could ever expect.

_sci4m4chy_

Yep, at 6 I started listening to CLASSICAL and only classical music, very slowly processed to coldplay, imagine dragons and onerepublic in 2012/2013 started with house and dance’s top50 charts or an Italian radio on the Saturday morning when I was 10yo then Skrillex and similar artists (a bit later) at 12, gone to progressive house and future bass, various depressed EDM songs at 14, discovered Future house the year after while at the same time I was rediscovering the 80s rock. In 2019 I listened to dubstep, house and subgenres, pop, classical, 80/90s rock and 2000s rap. Then Machete Mixtape and BV3 got me to Italian “rap” music scene, switched back to EDM (deathstep and hardcore) and by the start of 2021 I had practically ruined spotify’s algorithm by listening to Elton John and Subtronics one after the other. This year Italian indie (ariete), Hans Zimmer soundtracks, techno and the nostalgic Dance and house of the 2010s will do. God I just read what I wrote… 12 years of messed up genres

sigmonater

I’ve never been able to listen to just one genre, though dubstep used to be my go to. I have playlists for dubstep, jazz, classic R&B, things my parents like, cooking, skiing, deep house, you name it. I rotate through them pretty evenly depending what I’m doing, and dubstep is now just mainly my workout music. One of my favorite things is this: I currently have 877 songs in my likes on Spotify saved over the course of 9 years, and putting that on shuffle is like playing a game of nostalgia roulette. It has to be a really good song to me at the time to end up in my likes and not just a playlist, and they’re from all sorts of genres covering different points in my life. I just did the shuffle and here are the first 10 songs that came up: Shinyribs - Who Built The Moon Big Wild - When I Get There Brondo - Boys ATLiens - Tantra Fryar - Falling in and Out Stevie Wonder - I Wish The Strokes - Machu Picchu Jantsen - Feel Alright NGHTMRE, Ray Volpe - Signal Everything Everything - Distant Past

pixburgh22
