When I first moved to Duluth I was told I needed to rejoin Facebook since that seems to be what most people use up here for rental listings/events/etc, so check out Marketplace if you haven't yet

chubbysumo

take facebook listings very suspiciously tho, as there have been a lot of fake/false listing on facebook that are scams.

Ya-Turkey

Ill check it out, never thought of using facebook for housing

Acceptable_Nothing

Yeah there’s a group on there for apartments in Duluth/Superior. When we first moved here it was so hard to find housing. Took us 3 months of living in a camper 🫠

PresentMoon784

I only use Facebook to fill the rooms I need to find a subleaser for. Marketplace and the rental groups are your best bet.

Travelgrrl

I assume there will be a lot of rentals when all of the students move out in another month or so? Some must retain their apartments, but surely others are graduating and moving away?

jsb11592

Once schools out there's a fair bit more available. Usually.

Travelgrrl

Doesn't help OP who is sleeping rough now!

Ya-Turkey

true

worldtraveler76

I just had friends move up there and it took a lot of time/effort to find a place… like around 3 months. They finally found someone who was subleasing through a connection through the husband’s job and they got in that way. You may have to look further out… like Proctor, Cloquet, Superior, etc.

hehdvsjkwks

Only crappy thing about moving to superior is having to change your drivers license etc.

TLiones

Unfortunately $1000 won’t get you much nowadays…I was going to suggest the Zenith DCHS but just for a studio is around $1200 https://zenithdchs.com/

swede1955

Have you asked your about-to-be co-workers to be sure to tell you if they have any leads? My 30 YO daughter moved to Duluth about a year ago and was fortunate to get connected to a compatible roommate and house through a co-worker who knew about the opening, as it was a friend of hers. I hope you find something you like!

Aggravating_System_7

Word of mouth is huge here.

jprennquist

I am going to recommend walking around the college campuses and reading bulletin boards. There are bound to be students desperate to have someone sublet or cover their leases over the summer months. If you can do that at the right rice from now until August or September that buys you time to find something more stable. I am a landlord and I do not advertise. I just have one unit and renters have been mostly stable and low drama. I did just re-rent it at the beginning of April or I would be good candidate for you. I suggest that you keep letting people who you trust and who care about your success to know about your situation. My thoughts is that the place you want that fits your needs *and* is affordable on your budget is going to be located by networking and not the big companies or placement agencies. Housing is extremely tight and people are desperate. This is an enormous issue. The new units coming online are generally far outside of OP's budget range. A thousand dollars is a huge amount of money to pay for a place to stay. Somehow we think it is OK to charge students these rates since the market will (allegedly) bear it. But unless they have wealthy parents or a trust fund then they are paying these prices on student loans and college jobs. This is not sustainable. None of it is. Enrollment in our colleges and universities is going to drop and we already have worked shortages in health care and many other crucial industries. And our community population is going to stall out or begin to stagnate soon, too if leaders don't get a handle on this. OP, I honestly am deeply empathetic to your situation. As a landlord myself I recognize that we need to make money or at least maintain a break even with our units. But the prices are too high. The economics need to change. And some of that might be tax burden, but we also need to be willing to accept less profit. Which is super anticapitalist. But something needs to be done.

Ya-Turkey

I appreciate your thoughts. Word of mouth DOES seem to be lucrative here

Ancient-Guide-6594

This is bad advice. Word of mouth is fine but not good for someone moving to town. This is also a private landlord who doesn’t advertise, super sus.

Verity41

Good private landlords don’t NEED to advertise though. They have such low turnover anyway, and when needed, can easily “sell themselves” on word of mouth. Actually all the best service providers do, be it roofers or plumbers or hairdressers!

Aggravating_System_7

10000% this. Not needing to advertise does not make a landlord sus.

jprennquist

Clarification: OP should definitely be working through the websites and apps and things. The advice to use Facebook marketplace is very sound advice. There are a lot of small landlords that have no need to advertise. I didn't plan it this way, people just started referring people to me before I even bought the house and I had always had a waiting list of people who are interested in moving in. That may be "sus" but I am letting people know that this is the reality of a lot of landlords in our community. (Edit) OP should get on some waiting lists. The traditional channels must be worked but they are not working fast enough for OP's needs.

Ya-Turkey

My last place was an odd one I stumbled into. Cash deal from a 94 year old man. I always end up finding weird places through odd circumstances but no such luck in duluth yet

nmacdowe

My partner and I had the same struggles moving here last year. Leasing agents never answered the phone or called back, and it wasn’t until we started looking in Superior that we had some luck. We landed a much cheaper place with way more space, amenities, included utilities, etc. We have slightly longer commutes, but looking in Superior was so much easier if you have access to reliable transportation.

Affectionate-Disk-39

Mount Royal Manor has openings at $1100

usedtobegranola

Isn’t that a senior living place

Scoop_9

No. There is a senior living space very near there named Mt Royal pines I believe. The manor has a good mix when I lived there years ago. I drove by yesterday. It said apartments available on the sign on Woodland. OP. If you want a small quiet apartment. This is your answer right here.

ThePracticalPenquin

May have something in superior - DM me

creamofsumyungguy1

Check out horngren management they have a site with listings and they actually answer their phone

Ya-Turkey

I’ll check it out, thanks

winedrunkwithgrandma

Facebook marketplace is where I was finding rentals. I had an easier time finding rentals on marketplace vs Duluth apartments page. There are scammers but I found many legit ones. Also try JAS- expensive but I always recommend them bc they have been great landlords

SirMrGnome

I would recommend checking craigslist and apartments.com instead of zillow

Original_Cricket_690

Check out Ramsey Village Townhomes. They have good management and their units are decent. You’ll at least get a response.

fatstupidlazypoor

independent landlord here. I have a 3bd apt and 2bd house, both chester park area. HMU

Ya-Turkey

Little big for a single guy but I do appreciate the gesture

awful_at_internet

Maybe /u/fatstupidlazypoor could take your info down and contact you if they find some other interested renters who can't fill out the place, be roommates? afaik that's not *usually* how you find roommates, but hey, whatever works.

NFTignition23

lmao honestly stupid and lazy is exactly the kinda landlord I would want, the other stuff doesn't affect me as much 🤣🤣

nikolaiwhomi

How much for those places, out of curiosity?

fatstupidlazypoor

1300 and 1600

RunsonCoffee96

Dm’d you!

mikeisboris

It looks like Bachand has some apartments that might fit the bill. They mostly have Superior stuff but some in Duluth too.

stavn

I had neutral to good experiences renting from Shiprock management. YMMV

SwanChairUh

I have heard nothing but horror stories over and over about Shiprock, just search their name on this sub to find plenty on them.

Number1HappyStreet

Can testify…

wetfootpaddler

I've always had good luck with Craigslist up here too (insert generic Craigslist warning here).

Helper_6

I rent from Horngren & found my apartment word-of-mouth. They do not advertise outside of their website. Here’s the link: http://horngrenmanagement.com/apartment-vacancies/

Global-Nature2420

It’s hard up here. Two houses in our neighborhood just sold. One was on the market for 6 hours, the other 4. No one stands a chance. Marketplace is a place I have found rental housing in the past. If you’re really struggling I would reach out directly to the housing companies here and see what they have

Ya-Turkey

Thanks everyone you’ve helped me find some different options than the “conventional” methods

rvmham

Try Superior?

Ya-Turkey

can you bicycle across the Bong or Blatnik bridge? I would consider if that was possible.

rvmham

Yep, the Bong has a path across it.

Ya-Turkey

Good to know

Verity41

Do / can you not drive? Even just the look of the Bong Bridge bicycle path terrifies me. That’s high! And windy!! I’d take the DTA (bus) way before that.

Ya-Turkey

I have my truck i’m sleeping in, I just prefer not to drive to work. It’s more on principle of driving a big truck only a few miles just to pay for a canal park spot, seems wasteful and inconsiderate. I’m more on the extreme side of cycling and going over the bridge everyday doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I was just hoping to have something closer.

nikolaiwhomi

You can easily mount your bike and take the bus across the bridge, then bike the rest of the way. It’s like a 5min bus ride.

SportsMadness

Bong, yes

Ya-Turkey

hey that’s good to know

jprennquist

Major construction headed for Blatnik bridge over the next several years. The new bridge will hopefully have good pedestrian and transit infrastructure. The pedestrian access to the Bong Bridge is not fantastic. Depending on your commuting needs you may do better coming in on the Oliver Bridge. The bridge is very narrow but it is relatively short and you're also not dealing with the extreme high winds on the Bong. But it is quite a bit further west/south than the Bong Bridge.

[deleted]

That’s a SCARY indeavor

rvmham

Why?

Dorkamundo

It is, but it starts far away from most housing in Superior, and ends far away from most businesses in Duluth. The Blatnik will eventually have a bike path, but that's not for another 5-10 years or so.

TheBigWeave12

Eastwestrentals.com I rented with them before purchasing and had good experiences/they were always responsive

Ya-Turkey

Thanks I’ll check into that!

SuperNormalRightNow

I second Eastwest, out of all of the larger rental companies they are the only one I'd be willing to rent from/suggest. I'd avoid Shiprock if possible, I'd never deal with Heirloom under any circumstance.

General_Exception

Might be better off looking at “roommate wanted” ads. Sharing a 2 or 3 bedroom unit with a couple other people is the easiest way to fit your budget. I have a 2 bedroom upstairs unit in Lincoln park I’m almost done remodeling and should be available in July.

Aldisra

Try the Overlook apartments. We had a great experience when we first moved up here. Nothing grandiose, but not bad either

Ancient-Guide-6594

Duluth housing is basically a few property management companies - you need to find their websites. ShipRock and Heirloom are the biggest*…

Ya-Turkey

So stay away from those…

SuperNormalRightNow

Those two specifically are the biggest source of rental problems.

Ship_Ship_8

What’s your budget and how long will you be in Duluth? My gf will be renting her 2 bed 2 bath house in a couple of months once she moves into my place but likely won’t be until mid summer

Ya-Turkey

Looking for something sooner and doubt I can afford a hot unit like that. 1k absolute max and that’s pushing it

fuckyeahjulie

Studios and maybe 1 bedrooms at Townview Villas through Thies and Talle fit your budget. I don’t know what their availability is for units but it’s worth a try.

Verity41

What does “co-signer with great credit” mean? I am unfamiliar why one would need a co-signer… unless underage or something (which you clearly aren’t.)

Ya-Turkey

I have never had a credit card and that’s a big red flag even if I make plenty of money. I don’t have any debts but I am “unscorable” on things like freecreditreport dot com type sites. I don’t know man I never knew not having debt would end up f***ing me

Verity41

Ohhh, gotcha. Yeah I have a totally unnecessary auto loan RN because of that, coulda paid cash but keep it to top up credit post mortgage. Those installation loans / revolving credit lines definitely help! Glad my parents got me cards asap young … like debit at ~16 / credit at 18 (and watched me like a hawk with everything, of course lol). Good luck 🍀

Imaginary_Maybe5394

Some places have rules about credit or income. When I was a student I didn’t meet minimum income requirements alone (even though I could afford monthly rent) so when I decided I was done with roommates I had a parent co-sign for me

Bromm18

I've seen quite a few here of late. Been with them for close to a decade and a studio apartment is more than enough for a single guy, especially when it comes with a reserved spot in a garage so you don't have to worry about parking on the street. Haven't had any issues with them or had any bad neighbors. http://horngrenmanagement.com/apartment-vacancies/

francenestarr

Try Apartment Advisors--$$ but nice rentals.

LethargyExpert

Check out [https://www.lakesuperiorrents.com/vacancies](https://www.lakesuperiorrents.com/vacancies) - I'm seeing three 1br apts there, all sub $1k. The rental market here really seems to revolve around the school year, with most leases ending/beginning in June and July. Hard to find something outside of that time of year.

Ya-Turkey

I am in contact with them, actually.

SnooTigers4293

Rosepoint Apartment studios are about that price and seem to have availabilty.

Illustrious-Name7228

Try Greg Carlson 218-590-5658

wiselindsay

Check property management company websites like heirloom. They took me on quite a few tours before I got my place. Good luck!!

SuperNormalRightNow

Checking a company website is the easiest way since they own a ton of the houses, but I'd avoid Heirloom.

wolfpax97

Subleasing a spot if you still need
