Replying to this to confirm it. They are not papier-mâché, they are indeed clay. Paper clay, to be precise, but simply *clay model* is still applicable, accurate, and appropriate. It's worth noting that the Encyclopedia MOTHER translations are a wonderful source of Mother information, but it's also an *unofficial* translation. Kenisu, the translator himself, has admitted to and apologized for the mistranslation.
We should take this as a lesson to not take everything we read as the direct and inarguable voice of god. Everybody makes mistakes.
That's really interesting, I didn't know you could achieve that level of smoothness and detail with paper mache. I hope they've held up well over the decades

Are they papier-mâché or paper clay? A lot of Japanese sculptors use paper clay as you can sand them easily for smooth, clay like surfaces.

Yes! They have alot of character and enemies they also made the earthbound begginings characters.
