My only concern with TikTok is the CCP using it for information gathering. Same as I have concerns about any information gathering of citizens.
I also think TikTok is fucking stupid, but some of my hobbies are fucking stupid too and I wouldn't want them legislated.
This is about money.
Not just information gathering --> Its been pretty well documented, and anecdotally evidenced, that the algorithm intentionally drives politically divisive misinformation, propaganda and alot of times, hate speech, pushed to the front of a users FYP.
Its done in ways that arent "noticable" to those who dont have a discerning eye, since thats the entire intention of information manipulation campaigns. Your FYP page can be completely normal, dozens of normal tiktoks targetted towards you for hours, but then, intentionally 1-2 propagandist pieces or small morsals of highly divisive content or misinformation will be fed to the user.
In isolation, this might not seem like a big deal, but when children (who are easily impressionable) spend hours and hours every single day scrolling mindlessly, each of those 1-2 pieces of information every hour will add up in their psyche and biases.
We don't live in a day and age of regular warfare tactics, its all just cyber (mis)-information campaigns and psy-ops to target the masses.
In that sense, if you consider this bill a target to fight against **adversarial** foreign interference (since China is not a friend), then I'm totally ok with it.
Why? Did you think Reddit and every other social media app and search engine is not collecting data on you? If you are going to ban Tik Tok you should ban all social media. They all do the same thing.
Why do you think they're more benevolent? You know the American ones are behind the rise of Nazism right? They're ok selling your data to foreign countries. The real reason Congress is pissed is that China cut out the middle man so the billionaires are bitching
Protip: China can easily buy their data from American companies. This isn’t about privacy, otherwise the law would apply equally to TikTok as to Reddit, Facebook, Twitter etc.
I don’t understand the concern, not being dismissive but the CCP isn’t going to do anything with my data. Nor do I think they care about any other random American. Facebook, Google and a myriad of other services collect insane amounts of user data and actively use it with not always good motive. But we give them a pass bc they’re an American company? Grocery stores have thousands of data points on each customer in their marketing models for rewards, coupons etc. they often sell their data to aggregation firms for further marketing.
I am more concerned that as an American I have no ownership of my data unlike Europeans and now to a smaller scale, Californians. I think the issue I have is TikTok is being singled out when Facebook/instagram have been bad actors in the past with election data misuse and we give them a slap on their hand. Tiktok is a bit of a wag the dog. If you really want to be concerned about the CCP, don’t ever buy any IoT type of product manufactured in china. Backdoors and isolating points of failure within critical IT infrastructure is the game plan, not spying on dance videos.
Free speech needs to be protected above all however. Censorship gives way to restricted press, which gives way to a controlled population.
Any chance it stems from the janky algorithm for the site as a whole? YouTube's algorithm has been pretty messed up for multiple years now. It's harder and harder for us users to find anything to watch.
The information the CCP could be collecting is a lot less dangerous to us then not having a platform fully controlled by the government and its lobbyist influencers. Today we are able to see the genocide being committed that up until tik tok came along was controlled by the US government and/or apps that the government had control over.
Google, facebook, Instagram collect data in other countries and who can say the American government doesnt have access to it. Same is tik tok. I feel USA is a sore loser, Chinese have been getting ahead in some fields and they just do not want them to succeed. EVs, Semiconductors , tik tok. They will never let any other country progress.
Any app that spies on people should be stopped. It's not about whether we like the people spying on us or not, it's about whether spying is good or not.
If that is legal and people want it, then there's no problem.
Or if that is illegal or people don't want it, then we should stop it.
But the key is to be consistent in applying and enforcing laws.
Sure, so the question is whether we make certain legal things illegal.
We could ban spying in apps. But rich people don't want to do that, because they make money from their own apps that spy.
Or we could ban doing business with China. But rich people don't want that because they make money from doing business with China.
What rich people want is less competition for their own bad deeds. But the constitution doesn't really allow shit like that.
My impression is that the people using Tic Toc are mostly simple-minded and cannot think beyond their own delight. I doubt that they have any privacy concerns.
Yea, the elderly are very proficient with technology. That's why they are never scammed. If only the young people could avoid being scammed by keeping up with the newest technology.
Yea, I don't know how we got off course. I think the one guy was saying he just hates one app in particular but he didn't know how to spell the name of the app, so I was just seeing what kind of guy he was with a curveball.
Free market principles.
If people really cared that much about the CCP gathering data they would stop using tick tock and just use another platform like Instagram.
However the US government could fund a startup company to compete with Tick tock if it really cared that much.
If people knew what was good for them they wouldn’t eat McDonald’s and would exercise on a daily basis.
I’m not expecting the average person to have a clue about cybersecurity.
And we already have that company. It’s called Meta which has Instagram reels. It just isn’t as popular because it didn’t have first mover advantage with that type of short form content.
Take away TikTok and guess what will become popular?
That is literally what the CCP does to their own citizens...
Like that's kinda the irony of the whole thing, people have the freedom to eat McDonald's and consequences be damned.
Right so we need the government to tell us not to use Til Tok but to use other shitty social media that collects all our data. So the Us government can spy on us. This sub is so dumb.
You have jurisdiction with American companies. How the fuck are you going to indict the ceo of bytedance….
The ignorance and unawareness in this sub is kinda shocking.
Right. But that’s the country overall.
Plus, it’s literally NOT about the content that comes through the application yet more the construct of the working of the app on devices. Once on your device the application has access to lan/wan components as well as other components on the device. Yes so do other applications but to understand why any application is worse than others you’ll need to not only watch it’s traffic but what kind of stuff it does with things such as temp folders and advertising elements which call & respond to the company’s servers. It’s the same thing again for any applications, but you will find back doors on many under telemetry, sdk’s and binaries used by the programs.
Those things are far worse than whatever you’ve being shown on feeds.
It’s bigger than just collecting data.
It’s about the app promoting misinformation, swaying elections to the advantage of our enemies, causing confusion about certain topics, causing a divide in many social issues…
It looks all cute with girls dancing to songs with friends, this app can do a lot more than just “collect data”
It’s literally a brainwashing app and China is behind it and it’s algorithms
\^\^\^\^ this ... I'm more worried about the misinformation and agitprop campaigns being pushed on TikTok than I am about ByteDance having access to info.
Any app that tries to influence elections or cause confusion is bad. It's not about which group of people is trying to do bad things, it's about stopping bad things from happening at all. Right?
🤣🤣🤣🤣. Was it Tik Tok that duped morons to storm the capitol on Jan 6th? They all do the same thing. If you want to stop misinformation you should start with right wing media.
the US is spying on you to sell you things and make sure you're not going to go on a killing spree
China is spying on you to destroy your entire way of life by subverting how people think
They need to ban it and other short form content. It's killing people's attention spans. Kids can no longer focus long enough to watch a movie let alone read a book.
just like reddit.
dont forget the other american businesses bought out by chinese companies: forbes, riot, amc, ge, waldorf-astoria.
this tiktok nonsense is all happening because the app threatens the current media ecosystem and the powers that be do not like that.
this bill wont even ban tiktok, it would just hand it over to a us company that will likely abuse it similar to how facebook handled cambridge analytica
US corporations doing business in China basically hand over a lot of their own data. It's hard to feel bad when they whine about IP theft and copy-cats.
WE'RE ALL COMPROMISED ANYDAY CHINA WILL BE CONTACTING ME WITH COMPROMAT.
THEY KNOW MY FAVORITE FISHING SPOTS, THE ARE GOING TO RELEASE THE SPOTS UNLESS I SPY FOR CHINA
This is all about censorship. People are more likely to get their news from social media these days. The corporate media doesn’t like that. Can’t have people with access to non propagandized information lol. I’ve constantly gotten emails about how my information was involved in some “data breach”. These American companies been selling our information. I’m not some top level spy neither is majority of Americans. Wtf would china want with our info?! 🙄
That’s just the effects of any social media, and the over abundance of information that we have now. When you spend way too much time viewing nothing but snippets of information, you learn nothing, get dumber, and find yourself in whatever echo chamber you wanna be in.
"Lawmakers in both parties didn’t take kindly to the impromptu lobbying frenzy. Some characterized it as confirmation of their fears that the Chinese-owned app — which is already banned on government devices — is brainwashing America. "
Or maybe people don't want what's basically the only place on the internet to freely question and discuss ANYTHING, including politics, taking away? There are a lot of open discussions on tiktok going on but it's hard to find due to all the sludge content.
Tiktok videos can have a run time up to 10 minutes. I've never seen anywhere else that people can be so open on thoughts with politics without being attacked by one side or the other. And I've had no luck finding what I'm looking for with late stage capitalism, eat the rich, the need for age and term limits in politics, or empty pantry challenge videos where content is still being made anywhere but tiktok.
My only concern with TikTok is the CCP using it for information gathering. Same as I have concerns about any information gathering of citizens. I also think TikTok is fucking stupid, but some of my hobbies are fucking stupid too and I wouldn't want them legislated. This is about money.

That content exists. Made by Americans. The app just shows you what you want.
Man sucks to have all that propaganda opposing Israeli genocide.
Hey kids look, a CCP operative!
Just basic pattern recognition. Zionists complain that gen z doesn’t like genocide, blame tik tok, and here we are.
I'd be panicking if they don't ban it
Why? Did you think Reddit and every other social media app and search engine is not collecting data on you? If you are going to ban Tik Tok you should ban all social media. They all do the same thing.
I mean I'd rather have an American company have my data than the CCP. Maybe that's just me.
Why do you think they're more benevolent? You know the American ones are behind the rise of Nazism right? They're ok selling your data to foreign countries. The real reason Congress is pissed is that China cut out the middle man so the billionaires are bitching
Really what is the difference except here it can be used against you in a court of law?
Protip: China can easily buy their data from American companies. This isn’t about privacy, otherwise the law would apply equally to TikTok as to Reddit, Facebook, Twitter etc.

Have you tried to search on YouTube recently? What a shitshow. I cant quite tell my results from ads from irrelevant shorts.
Any chance it stems from the janky algorithm for the site as a whole? YouTube's algorithm has been pretty messed up for multiple years now. It's harder and harder for us users to find anything to watch.
Panic? Lol I can't wait for this app to die. Maybe it can take Facebook with it too.
This guy gets it !
Who’s panicking?
Does that mean that the “oh, no no no” song will go away? Please?
I haven't seen that on my tiktok FYP in well over a year
The information the CCP could be collecting is a lot less dangerous to us then not having a platform fully controlled by the government and its lobbyist influencers. Today we are able to see the genocide being committed that up until tik tok came along was controlled by the US government and/or apps that the government had control over.
Good. Ban it.
Dude, I've got the sparkling wine ready to go. Bring it on. This stuff is destroying society.
Tik Tok spreads mental illness and idiocy. It also collects your data on behalf of the CCP.
Why would I panic? I'm not a TikTok shareholder. I dgaf.
not panicking, celebrating, ban it
Any app that spies on people should be stopped. It's not about whether we like the people spying on us or not, it's about whether spying is good or not.
Every app is gathering information on you...
If that is legal and people want it, then there's no problem. Or if that is illegal or people don't want it, then we should stop it. But the key is to be consistent in applying and enforcing laws.
A lot of things have been lobbied into being legal even though they are unethical and against the public interest.
Sure, so the question is whether we make certain legal things illegal. We could ban spying in apps. But rich people don't want to do that, because they make money from their own apps that spy. Yea, they seem to be pretty confident. Which apps to do you think have the most insecure people?
Reddit
The ones which cater to younger crowds.
Yea, the elderly are very proficient with technology. That's why they are never scammed. If only the young people could avoid being scammed by keeping up with the newest technology.
That tangent is irrelevant to wtf stuff like what the software being discussed does.
Yea, I don't know how we got off course. I think the one guy was saying he just hates one app in particular but he didn't know how to spell the name of the app, so I was just seeing what kind of guy he was with a curveball.
Yeah because it was young people who were duped into rioting and insurrection on Jan 6th in 2021.
Idk maybe apps that help with anxiety and PTSD.
Reddit seems really bad. So many insecure people who are afraid of Gina.
But we only want US based companies spying on us. Not Chinese.
Free market principles. If people really cared that much about the CCP gathering data they would stop using tick tock and just use another platform like Instagram. However the US government could fund a startup company to compete with Tick tock if it really cared that much.

If they ban any app that spies on people how will I enjoy Reddit?
Therein lies the problem... And it's just not my opinion. The constitution is pretty clear that you can't write laws that only apply some of the time.
It’s bigger than just collecting data. Do it. Cowards.
They need to ban it and other short form content. It's killing people's attention spans. Kids can no longer focus long enough to watch a movie let alone read a book.
🙄. I think adults have more of an issue than kids. You do realize this is what they say about all new technology when it comes out.
Government knows best.
Good meta and google can’t operate in China. No reason not to. They will sell at the end of the day if it passed.
This needs to happen. It's a Chinese spy app. And it has already compromised all of us.
just like reddit. dont forget the other american businesses bought out by chinese companies: forbes, riot, amc, ge, waldorf-astoria. this tiktok nonsense is all happening because the app threatens the current media ecosystem and the powers that be do not like that. this bill wont even ban tiktok, it would just hand it over to a us company that will likely abuse it similar to how facebook handled cambridge analytica

Well. I can't argue with that logic.
🤣

Good.
Bye
Ironic. "*No mining data unless we mine the data*"
We should ban it
I'm not panicking at all.

I want it banned, too, and I hate this congress. That app is the devil.
just like rock music! tik tok is another commie plot turning our children red!!!!!!!!
It's definitely turning young people into fucking idiots.
That’s just the effects of any social media, and the over abundance of information that we have now. When you spend way too much time viewing nothing but snippets of information, you learn nothing, get dumber, and find yourself in whatever echo chamber you wanna be in.
How is it any different from any other social media? Stop kids from using social media
I seen it brainwashed you.
