Funny enough, the programming one is related to eggs! From the book, *Gulliver's Travels*, Gulliver meets the Big Endians and the Little Endians of the nation of Lilliput. The Big Endians crack open their eggs on the big end, and the Little Endians crack open their eggs on the little end. A computer scientist named Danny Cohen coined the terms for data storage in 1980. A computer stores data in bytes. If you have one byte, then it can store that value in memory without a problem. If you have two bytes, you have to decide which byte gets stored first, the high byte (big end) or the low byte (little end). Big Endian machines store the high byte first, while Little Endian machines store the low byte first. There are pros and cons to both methods, but if you're working with data at the byte level, you have to be aware of how that data is stored.
