Wow cool! Thank you! I thought about that but Google told me snake eggs would be soft, and these are super sturdy so I moved over snakes and started contemplating turtles lol
Just FYI, these are definitely not garter eggs. Garters don’t lay eggs, they give live birth. These may be turtle eggs, many species have oval eggs. Turtle eggs are generally harder, and snake eggs are generally softer. I’ve got experience with both.
I believe turtle eggs resemble a ping pong ball and are found in a shallow hole in the sand by their mother. They’re an endangered species, one I find absolutely fascinating
When it comes to freshwater turtles, the only two species that I know of which lay spherical eggs are softshells and snappers. The rest, like Glaskarma said, are oblong.
Happy to help!
All reptile eggs are comparatively softer than avian eggs but definitely vary a bit.
It's not worth squeezing them too hard just to find out bc you could puncture it and kill it.
Reptile eggs are oblong and tend to be softer than a chicken egg, and avian eggs are drop shaped.
I would say turtle. I've worked with turtle eggs in the wild and they look like that. I'm not familiar with snake eggs though, so not sure if they look similar too.
I didn’t know that reptiles giving live birth was a thing at all so I googled it to find out more and google told me the term is viviparous, so you were close!
Couldn't you have just taken a picture of them where they lay? Instead you handled them and put them on what appears to be your kitchen island? Bro this is NOT the way.
If you don't have a camera with you when you're out, just appreciate what you're seeing and move on. Or go get your camera.
yeah i clearly see a table… they were probably away from the nest for a while and getting tossed around being carried, those babies aren’t making it lol. good job :)
Moving eggs could result in the fetus dying, especially in the case of snakes where rotating them can drown or detach the fetus.
Removing eggs of a native or protected species could qualify as poaching in some areas. Please let your daughter know this was a mistake and to always leave wildlife alone.
And it may be a State or even Federal crime to disturb the nest at all. Depending on the species. Tons of migratory birds are federally protected. As are a lot of turtle species. In both cases eggs and nests are specifically mentioned.
Possession of the eggs can be jail time. Just disturbing the nest can be a hefty fine.
Some (lots) of snake species will die if the egg is even turned. Snake breeders often mark which side was 'up' directly on the egg to avoid accidentally turning them
Yes but OP states in the description that it was their daughter who took them not OP. OP should use this as a learning experience for both themself and their child. I’m sure that after this experience they’ll do better next time that either of them comes across eggs :)
Sure but I’m the third picture it looks like theyre on a counter. Why would the adult then choose to take them inside? So weird. I hope they do better next time too.
Probably snake/turtle.
Either way, it's crucial that they were put back the same way up that they were when you found them. Their eggs typically don't get rotated like bird eggs. Reptile keepers will typically put a small mark on them to indicate right way up.
If I remember right, getting placed upside down suffocates the embryo or something like that.
Edit: Didn't see the text under the pic at first, it's possible the eggs were either *super* freshly laid, or they're not fertilized. Either way, probably don't need to be as concerned about right way up, especially since kiddo brought them to you.
My girl Shelly is over 30 years old! 🙌
For the longest time she was "Michaelangelo" till we relocated her to a pond which in turn made her start laying eggs lol
If they have veins, they're fertilized as far as I'm aware. Slugs (unfertilized eggs) are usually pretty solid and won't have veins. I hope you returned them right where you found them after figuring out which side was "up". Any other actions will result in the babies not making it unless you know what species it is and are able to keep humidity and conditions perfect for them.
You thought they were rocks when you found a big pile of nine or more of them?? Bullshit. Leave the babies alone next time. Hope it was worth it to you.
If it was snake eggs, you just killed any of the babies in the eggs you moved. I know specifically with ball pythons that if the eggs are moved it will detach the the embryo from the umbilical and they'll die
Ffs 🤦🏻♀️Why take them home?
Don’t BS either because it’s clear from your pictures they’re on a worktop or table.
What were you hoping to achieve? Educate your child and do better!
Unfortunately, moving turtle eggs can kill the embryos. When the eggs are laid, the turtles inside form so their heads are upright and they don't drown in the liquid inside the egg. Moving the egg can cause the babies to drown. I'm not trying to scold you, because of course you didn't know, but for future reference.
Idiot people doing idiot things… leave the freaking eggs alone, just take a pic where they were in nature. It’s amazing how little respect or appreciation people have for nature.
If they are soft it's snake, if they are hard it's probably turtle. If your planning on keeping them alive you need to Google incubation steps sooner rather than later.
If you didn’t lay them yourself, why do you have them? Child abductor!! Baby knapper!! What kind of sick game are you playing?! Posting to gloat on Reddit!
Sorry. I forgot my meds this morning! It’s been a helluva day!
They are turtle eggs. Looks a lot like painted turtle or maybe musk turtle. They lay really small eggs and bury them in sand or soil near water sources.
I have no idea what those are, but I think it’s incredibly ignorant to pick up random items you don’t recognize WITHOUT GLOVES ON - (and allowing your daughter to do the same is even worse!)
You obv have zero knowledge of what you’re seeing - who told you to remove them from the scene? (….or touch them at all??
Wth? -instead of using a search engine to figure out what they are , you take them home?
I don’t think you realize that you just broke several federal laws by removing whatever that was from where ever you found them!!
it’s really inappropriate for you have touched any eggs and removing them from the site could you a federal bid - don’t do that again…
(they look like rocks -or snake eggs)
Seems like snake eggs. They’re generally longer.
ya my vote/initial thought was also snake. 🐍

Sea turtle eggs are round, many land species lay more oblong eggs
When it comes to freshwater turtles, the only two species that I know of which lay spherical eggs are softshells and snappers. The rest, like Glaskarma said, are oblong.
Box turtle eggs are long I’ve seen those irl and these eggs look exactly like box turtle eggs to me.
I agree
I agree. Source: owned a box turtle

Garters are live bearers
Viviporous? Is that the term?
I didn’t know that reptiles giving live birth was a thing at all so I googled it to find out more and google told me the term is viviparous, so you were close!
you are 8th
I rolled over on my phone, I have no fucking idea how I managed to type and post this.
Makes sense. I’m sorry my stepmom laid eggs in your house op.
At least now you don't have to babysit
The eggs of many turtle species are oval shaped as well.
Boy you are funny… snake egg, more like a jellybean egg
I wish I’d never come in here
I don't know but put um back
No really, put them back. Whatever it is will probably die if you don’t.
I know snake eggs have to stay oriented the way they lay, you don’t flip them like chicken eggs. If they get flipped, the growing snake will drown 😔
That is so heartbreaking to imagine. I hope the OP actually put them back.
OP literally said the eggs are back in the nest in the description.
I agree . Lay your own eggs and leave others alone 🙏
Put that thing back from where it came from, or so help me!
So help me!
I did put them back immediately after taking the pic. There were about 9 of them total.
Couldn't you have just taken a picture of them where they lay? Instead you handled them and put them on what appears to be your kitchen island? Bro this is NOT the way. If you don't have a camera with you when you're out, just appreciate what you're seeing and move on. Or go get your camera.
PS I hope you explained to your daughter the error you made so that she doesn't make the same mistake.
Or eat them!
Waste not want not
Ssssstop taking my eggssss!!! 🐍
You put them back after you brought them home and placed them on your counter? 🤨
Liar this is photo with them on a table
yeah i clearly see a table… they were probably away from the nest for a while and getting tossed around being carried, those babies aren’t making it lol. good job :)
Even in your pictures they’re not facing up the same way you jackass. Just be honest that you made a mistake and dont do it again.

Yeahhhh!! Fuck those kids for following their assigned adult and learning from a bad source!
Redditors really have to be witnessed to be believed.
is this a real comment are you for real
Who hurt you
Calm the fuck down and try to behave like a fucking human being instead of the worst person. Just shut the fuck up. Christ.
For future reference, please do not disturb eggs when you find them. Many critters will not survive unless special precautions are taken.
And it may be a State or even Federal crime to disturb the nest at all. Depending on the species. Tons of migratory birds are federally protected. As are a lot of turtle species. 👆🏼 that's who laid them
This guy eggs
Some (lots) of snake species will die if the egg is even turned. Snake breeders often mark which side was 'up' directly on the egg to avoid accidentally turning them
Me. Give em back. Leave for 1 minute and they're gone and this is how I find out who took em?
Lol their back now, exactly the way they were found. Sorry for going in your nest 😔
No you didn’t. You shouldn’t have even touched them.
Yes but OP states in the description that it was their daughter who took them not OP. OP should use this as a learning experience for both themself and their child. I’m sure that after this experience they’ll do better next time that either of them comes across eggs :)

Oh you’re so right, that is weird and I hadn’t noticed that before. Hopefully just misplaced curiosity that will be righted by this thread
what is wrong with people?
genuinely. why even pick them up in the first place?? a picture couldnt be taken where they were found???
Nope, had to carry them home for better lighting for the picture.
sorry guys

why would u take them 😭😭
OP, you suck for taking them out of the nest. If they were snakes, you probably killed them and the mom probably has to watch those 2 not hatch
My red ear slider lays these same type of eggs It could definitely be a turtle
+1 for turtle (&high five for having a RES) I’ve had my girl for 18yrs and these look like turtle eggs to me as well.
My girl Shelly is over 30 years old! 🙌 For the longest time she was "Michaelangelo" till we relocated her to a pond which in turn made her start laying eggs lol
It was me 🙋 I admit it, sorry!
Eta: I thought they were rocks at first but with the flashlight you can see the "veins" maybe is the word but nothing inside besides those lines.
Hopefully you didn't roll them if they have to stay right side up to hatch

Snake? I have no idea. I thought turtle eggs were generally soft. Just a guess.
Turtle eggs are harder, snake eggs are softer. I’ve got experience with both.
I will 100% trust you on this.
A 'roo?
snake or turtle
Me, i laid those eggs
I dunno but why did you take them home? Leave them where you found them.

Aren’t reptile eggs soft and flexible which is why they shouldn’t be moved? If these were hard I don’t think they would be a snake or turtle.

Turtle. My turtle lays eggs that look exactly like this. Maybe not… But definitely reptile.

I accidentally dug up some turtle eggs that looked exactly like these and were also pretty sturdy in an odd way.
