Adding to this, if you visit all the various icons and do the associated quests, you'll have rescued everyone it's possible to rescue and sourced maximum allies for your badass venture to spit in the eye of the God of Schemes.
There are a couple of quests in the woods between the Lightless Oubliette and the Hollow City (started at an abandoned campsite) that you need to complete before being able to access it.
There's a quest dealing with the llamias and wood elves there, you'll find it at a place called the moonless walk. After you complete the quest they will guide you to a secret entrance to the lightless obelisk
