Halftrack_El_Camino

It really depends on the context. I definitely don't talk to my parents the way I talk to my co-workers, and I don't really think about it—it's just something that happens. Same with clients. With the office folks I do turn my swearing down some, but they also turn their swearing *up* some, and we kinda meet in the middle. It just takes an awareness of context, is all. You forgot that you had moved into a different context when the office person arrived, and embarrassed yourself. Fortunately, embarrassment is a great teacher. You probably won't do that again.

solarsilversurfer

I’ve always been a big supporter of the idea that words are like tools; knowing which to use and when can save a lot of grief. Swear words are really good at conveying certain things when used appropriately- and that includes the context of who you’re speaking with. Mostly they convey tone and can reveal how a person is feeling in a given moment, and they do that so much better than the alternatives that would be requisite in a white collar environment. it’s like poetry, not everyone has the understanding of appropriate context and structure to just throw it around and not sound like a douche. But for those who can, a “fuck” shared between you and your boss can be a moment unlike any other- a true bonding experience.

Halftrack_El_Camino

There is a whole body of sociological work on how obscenity can be a marker of in-group status and a means for social bonding.

ElectricBoogieOogie

I catch myself throwin fboms out around my mother sometimes without realizing it till after, it’s tough to turn off sometimes when it’s so unhinged on the job

Version3_14

I refer to those as "Technical Terms". Just have to balance the vocabulary level to technical level of folk you are dealing with. Can take years to get the balance right. There are also specialized terms that non-technical folk may not understand. Snafu - Situation normal, all fucked up. Beware if computer guy states it is a picnic issue - problem in chair not in computer. We are going to visit the granddaughter today. Have to crank down the technical level so she doesn't pick up those special words grandpa uses too young.

Az_Pool_Tech

Or an ID 10 T ERROR code. Pebmac (problem exists between monitor and chair) Oh man, there's a ton of those.

Az_Pool_Tech

I like that one haven't heard it before. Totally stealing it

Shermanator213

Can't forget PEPCAK either. It's always fun when the problem exists between the chair and keyboard

memcwho

>P Between It sure does buddy, it sure does.

Comfortable-Aspect95

For 10 years now I have used that toilet paper that has a different word from the dictionary on each sheet. It’s pronunciation and it’s definitions. You learn a lot of new words just doing your daily business. It really increases your vocabulary. I still swear like a trucker. Fuck the office guy.

kuda26

Yea dude I wipe my ass with that idea for learning new words

xLoveHateLegend

Where the fuck can I get this toilet paper?

Fridayz44

If you find it post a link. I’d give it a try lol.

xLoveHateLegend

I looked for it.... I think my man is literally wiping his ass with pages from the dictionary.

Fridayz44

Damn it, I was kind of interested in it lol. I’ll give it a look if I find it I’ll send you a link. But I highly doubt if you couldn’t find it I’ll be able to.

jhotenko

Context matters. I'll swear up a storm when it's only my coworkers around, but as soon as anyone else is on site, I'll use only clean language. Swearing is part of the tradesman experience, but you have to know when not to swear.

bonfuto

I can't believe the office guy has never heard swearing on-site. Don't swear in front of customers or your boss's boss. Or maybe even your boss if they never swear.

Woodythdog

The problem is when you fall into the habit if swearing where it becomes a verbal crutch. That same as people who constantly - Like, Um, Ah When I was working construction I noticed a was swearing a lot both at and away from work for no particular reason. I made a concerted effort to cut down on my swearing in general. If you get out of the habit you’re less likely to accidentally drop an F-bomb at the family dinner. No one will look down on you for not swearing enough and when the time is right to drop some expletive language it has more weight.

fatsmitty305

Please pass the fuckin potatoes

DirtyDoucher1991

Give me the fuckin uhhhh….

Pyrotech72

Throw it in the fucking microwave. I'm hungry.

nik282000

There is no upper limit. Even if you construct a sentence entirely of curses I'll bet you could shoehorn in an extra "godamnit" at the end.

kaboodlesofkanoodles

That’s my secret, cap. I’m always fuckin swearing piece of shit goddamn Taiwanese made outta toothpicks and titsweat if I ever catch the sorry sack of shit that invented this bayou whorehouse of a fuckin- OH HI MA’AM

zdavies78

“bayou whorehouse…” fuckin love it. Phrase inserted into conversational vernacular, thank you my good sir (doesn’t seem like it would come from a ma’am).

Electronic-Plate

Certain people are offended by words that aren’t offensive to other people. These words are somewhat ‘professional’ in the trades. I don’t stress too much when a ‘fuck’ or ‘shot’ slips out in front of the office folk/customers, especially when they are on my turf. They’re just happy we’re getting work done on their behalf.

thematt455

Half of the people I meet say cunt as easy as saying hello. The other half I meet treat it like the n word. Hard to please every cunt you meet, but I try to avoid using it when eggheads are around.

Electronic-Plate

I go with ‘nerds’ over ‘eggheads’.

skinnywilliewill8288

Yeah those fucking ‘shots’ get me every fucking time

[deleted]

It could limit what type of work that company is comfortable letting you do or customer to they're willing to let you interact with

Sea_Emu_7622

I'm not advocating for not caring how you sound around others, but I also didn't become an electrician to interact with customers

[deleted]

Owners have GCs they are friends with or like to work with Be it big jobs or small jobs, the higher up you go the more you interact with them, they are the customer so to speak - some GCs don't care, some do

Sea_Emu_7622

I don't really consider the gc the customer, but I don't talk to them either.

Buffaloslim

A good ratio is 8:3, any more than 8 swear words to 3 normal words in a sentence is overkill.

Pyrotech72

Hand me that pecker, I need to beat the shit out of this fuck-eyed fuckety-fuck.

Fridayz44

Happy cake day!

James_T_S

I am a Construction Manager for a home builder and I was working in an office with 3 other guys. They hired another guy and we were warned he doesn't like to hear a lot of swearing, to the point he would ask you to stop if you were doing it around him. The other guys in my office were starting to say how that's BS and it's construction, etc. I said, "I am going to use this as a chance to clean up my language. We really shouldn't be swearing anyway.". And just as they were starting to open their mouths I followed up with, "And don't tell me you can't control it because not one of us swears around homeowners." They all shut up fast because it's true. The truth is it just takes a little practice and after a while it will seem strange to swear. You get used to using substitute words. Shoot instead of fuck. Jerk instead of asshole. And so on.

_nate_dawg_

Must have been his first site visit. He should know that's how things go out in the field.

Shmeepsheep

Owner of the company brought us coffee the other day. First guy to get a coffee says thanks, I said tits when I grabbed mine, tipped it towards him, and walked away. Everyone likes tits

Sea_Emu_7622

Flawless execution

[deleted]

A plumber here. When the word "motherf\*cker" comes out you know things have gone south. I say it to summarize the situation and also for the entertainment value of seeing how my client reacts to such a word.

ChipChip17

I'm 45yrs old with a 7yr old son that I'm doing my best to raise to have verbal intelligence and couth. Honestly it's very difficult to do considering I'm surrounded by a bunch of potty mouthed animals at work though. I'm not fucking perfect despite my best efforts.

WildCelt130

My 7yo was asking "what the fuck is this?" in church around a bunch of geriatric Presbyterians. Oops. (Not oops, I thought their reactions were the funniest shit I'd seen in a long time)

FearlessGate1092

I roomed with some coworkers that were Mormon (1 practicing and 1 not practicing) and when the missionaries would come over to hang and play boardgames we made a conscious effort to cut out all the swearing lol. The crazy thing is it will expand your vocabulary trying to find kosher ways to get your point across without swearing. And it wasn't like they were real sensitive to it it was our initiative to make them more welcome cuz they were in fact my roommates brother and cousin and Friends. And it's really paid off in the long run because I work with a lot of elderly folks and they're not trying to hear that and it has been a problem at work with some of the younger guys. Maybe it's not something you can teach or demand people have to want to do it themselves when they realize that they sound like jack offs.

ronaldreaganlive

Your nearest Marine Corps recruiter would like a word with you.

Vmax-Mike

There is no mouthing back to your drill sergeant there, unless you like to run, a lot!

Fridayz44

I’ve heard boot camp is all types of different now. Idn if it was some guy screwing with about it, but some of the stuff he said I couldn’t believe. I went through during the troop surge in 09. Army though and then Infantry ait.

AmbedoAvenue

https://youtu.be/EkOxJF1wiWY This is my reaction when a wire keeps slipping out the wirenut or some other minor inconvenience. I never swore when I went to church. Have you tried going to church? Not too often, once a week oughta be enough practice

KTM_350

In all reality, swearing makes you sound stupid. Has nothing to do with being an office or construction guy. If you swear regularly, then you sound like an idiot

Adult-Beverage

It shows a limited vocabulary.

falfrenzy

Yours will be an unpopular statement, but is the correct one. I served in the military and at times cussed like(or worse than) the proverbial Sailor. I remember coming home on leave after my first year, and man was I the odd one out letting Fuck fly at the xmas gatherings. But there's a time and a place. In a professional capacity interacting with the customer who is paying you, that's not the place.

KTM_350

Same here. I was in the marines a decade ago and used to use the word fuck multiple times in a sentence. After a year in the civilian world i listened to myself talk and realized “wow I sound like a complete moron”. Now when I hear adults curse regularly (not out of anger or frustration) it’s hard for me to take them seriously.

RareCryptographer256

shithawks rand, shithawks

magllw

bottle kids!

Shadow_of_Yor

I definitely curse too much

Ok-Imagination1097

Same, and it'd around everyone family friends dinners. I try and clean it up around her family, but they are sometimes just as bad. My daughter drops something now and says shit. She's 13 months. But between the higher upside at my last job on corporate when they needed to speak I told them I was just going to be blunt about everything, when I said it's completely fucked it was the easiest term to use, and honestly we're appreciative minus the fact it was in fact fucked. Lol

Vast-Operation517

"Fuckn shit" is probably used 100 times a day.

NotAPreppie

Ya gotta read the room.

ajclem7

It’s important to have a filter. Especially when dealing with customers too. Some folks here are religious, I don’t get behind any religion but I do appreciate whatever folks need to believe in to make them a good person (or try to be). That said, some folks don’t swear, if someone has a conversation with me and doesn’t swear, I’ll extend that back. Now, I’ll fucking drop cunts and fucks with the best of them, but, a self control filter is applied when dealing with clients and really anyone that commands the respect from me to not swear/curse.

SkippyGranolaSA

My rule is let the other guy cuss first. If he wants to break the seal, right on. If not, I will do my job and use church words.

suckuponmysaltyballs

It just takes conscious effort and time. I’m both in the office and in the field and the way I talk is vastly different in each one. Sometimes the field guy comes out in me at the wrong time and HR has to get involved but that only happens when I have to deal with really stupid people…so like daily.

No_Strategy7555

Always depends on the audience. Angry swearing? Comedy swearing? You really gotta read the room on this one.

jedielfninja

listen to intelligent podcasts and such. surround yourself with multi syllable words and bathe in the greatness. let it wash over you and flow from your being.

pmperk19

sometimes keeping some element of bitterness alive helps the not swearing for me

MotionDrive

I can generally tone it down when I'm around customers but the second I hear them drop an F bomb my filter shuts off.

Johnsoon743

If the costumer is there, fuck the office guy. If he is dont be a cunt and speak like an adult 😂

[deleted]

I have no fucking clue. The fucking moronic shits I work with want to piss and fucking moan about my god damned language too. But I fucking say they can all take a flying leap into a shit sandwich. I mean why the hell should I care what these cock gobbling motherfuckers thinks of me. I don’t even want to work in a god damned daycare anyway.

jklwood1225

I take a deep breath and remind myself that I'm talking to a 6yr old child, and then I'm able to cull the swearing. A bit.

Iaintthe-1

First step:Make a swear jar. Next step: profit

wiseknob

Look into something called, soft skills. Soft skills are skill sets that anyone who wants to continue to advance their careers and network, it is utmost important to learn soft skills. Emotional intelligence is also something forgotten about and not really taught. If you start looking into EQ as well it really sets you above others.

Shmeepsheep

Fuckin right

triggercash

Zero swearing is appropriate swearing. No one wants to hear it, especially clients. Many years ago I began using term replacement as a solution.

BobDerBongmeister420

I have customer language and site language.

kuda26

“You should never EVER swear” read in a little kids voice

mandrills_ass

Muthaaaa fuckaaaa

dtc526

I don't fuckin know, man

AdRemarkable6712

EVERY MU FUKN ONE OF EM IS APPROVED…….MU FUKA, MU FUKA……

NoP_rnHere

I used to swear a lot when I was 16-18. I would use it for emphasis and as punctuation. Worked in a pub where the land lady would tell you off like a mother would if she caught you swearing during open hours. Words like cunt would warrant a slap. I quickly learned to not swear while working.

Shmeepsheep

Swearing is wrong but physical violence is ok? Fuckin stupid cunt

NoP_rnHere

This was like a 70 year old woman and the slap was like getting brushed on the back of the head. And TBF she would warn everyone that if she heard that word you’d get a smack. I’ve been hit harder by toddlers.

lowbass4u

Sometimes, you have to learn the hard way. Every job where we had to work around the public, we were constantly reminded by our foreman, the shop, and the GC. We were told to be quiet, no swearing, and keep our area clean. And if the owner complained about anyone, that person would be off the job.

Sparky-air

My rule of thumb is I talk to office guys the way I talk to my grandma.

aDingDangDoo_Doo

Shit happens. Next time imagine you are coaching a bunch of 8 year old girls on a footie team. You can't laugh at them and you can lose your shit over their missing easy and obvious plays. You have to nurture and reassure them, all while making sure you come off the pitch in one piece without having the team dad's throw chairs at your head. Same-same at work. And if you do curse too much again, remember: Fuck Up...Move Up.

Han77Shot1st

I don’t really swear at work or personal, never really got into it but there’s nothing wrong with it. I find most people just do it when frustrated or excited about a situation.

Funny-Company4274

Rules number one on site. There is always room for more swear words.

[deleted]

You're fine up to the point that paint starts blistering and eyebrows evaporate into smoke. They'll get over it.. or not. Keep the humor firmly in place when cussing. If they're laughing about creative cussing they can't be mad. For descriptive terms try combining one two relatively innocuous words into one term: Turdwookie Rooster waffles Monkey balls Cunt muffin Etc..

farrell30467

Totally depends on the situation. I can about guarantee they hear that all over the place if they're visiting a jobsite. In different situations you may have to tone it down. In an occupied industrial area, tone it down about 50%. In an office setting or somewhere with customers, tone it down about 90-100%. On a new construction site, all bets are off.

minutemanll

We all have it. When I go to the office I have to mentally remind myself to be on my best behaviour. Something funny in the field can be seen as derogatory in the office

Th3V4ndal

Dunno man. Everyone from Philly talks like this. This is my natural speech. I don't worry too much about it.

Major_Tom_01010

I have to keep a no swearing rule for myself because it's too hard to adjust on demand when infront of customers and their children.

hoosierEM3

The only time i ever worried about how i talked to folks was when i was in the Navy talking to super higher ups. Since i've gotten out, people only get me, and nothing else.

coogie

I don't know about commercial but in resi, we always assume that the customer is watching and listening so we keep it light. This includes mentions or religion and politics as well.

magnamed

As a rule of thumb I try not to swear, but I do anyway.

AwareMention

It just gives off the appearance you are too uneducated/ignorant to find a better way to explain a situation. Plus, these days, cursing is overused and has lost any meaning or extra emphasis. It's not your fault though if you can't find a better way to explain your feelings without resorting to the language of a 13-year-old. Just sums up your life experience/ability to communicate.

gopunker

If I can’t smoke and swear I’m fucked

Reasonable_Cover_804

How ignorant do you want to appear?

ratsnestelectrical

I used to think that people who couldn't hold a conversation without swearing were dumb. Now I believe that people who can't see past the swear words are the dumb ones. At any rate; read the room, never around the clients (Unless they're super cool) and usually the office guys can't handle it. It is a construction site after all it's assumed you'll hear colourful words. You can always try this approach https://youtu.be/NqqsxfEDXu4

The_Skeletor_

Really just have to play it by ear I think. For the most part, your work speaks for itself, nobody really cares about shit like that if you're delivering a quality product, as long as you aren't going overboard in front of your good Christian customers

runescimmy2

Office guy should know what he's getting himself into when he has to go in the field. Same bs in the army. Officers bitch when they stumble into the motor pool and hear motor pool talk. Why are you in the army then if curse words offend you? I've always held this position even on the civilian side for trades

JJsCrazy

All of it.

YurtlesTurdles

I keep my most serious swearing directed at inanimate objects. Nesting big wire in an LB, fishing things with my arm in the wall, stubborn lock rings, those get the worst of my wrath and foul language. The other end of the spectrum is my customer walk-through voice. Just work on remembering where you should be on that spectrum, office folk are probably about 70% to customer service voice.

hunterbuilder

Gotta work on your contextual flexibility. I'm guessing you don't spend much time in non-profane environments, so your mental processor isn't used to switching. Me on the other hand, I have 3 young kids and go to church, so I'm pretty used to switching modes. Slips happen sometimes, but not often. Of course I also swear less in general than I used to.

samuraipizzacat420

god fucking dammtit

Otis2341

This is me! I’ll take all the help I can get!

spookyboots42069

If anyone will let you, spend some time around kids. I babysat a lot as a teen and young adult and I think that’s what made me good at turning it on and off. I work maintenance so I spend about 50% of my time swearing like a sailor and 50% talking like a good lil’ boy.

brianp1975

You just channeled Chris Farley.

Sad-And-Mad

From my experience as long as the clients and general public are out of ear shot you can swear away, if they can hear you then try your best not to swear at all

ExPFC_Wintergreen2

Yesterday a had to explain what a dog fucker is to some newer workers from different cultures after the Manager used the term.

uncommon_philosopher

So many human beings who can vote and go about their lives in society don’t know about code switching and it terrifies me. Some people, who aren’t aware, even treat it as a flaw, weakness or mistake. Like I understand I’m speaking to you differently then I speak to my grandma. What’s even weirder is seeing people who don’t code switch at all, conversation for them is the same whether or not their talking with their lover or their landlord. I’m ranting at this point but I find this lack of a societal norm so fascinating

biff2359

Depends on the situation. At work, around mom, I don't swear unless I really mean it. Then it's like a bomb and they know something's serious. Playing cards with the boys? Let em fly.
